American saxophonist Clifford Jordan recorded a vast amount of material over the years, often in a style that sat somewhere between righteous hard bop and spontaneous free jazz. On Stage Volume 1 is perhaps not one of his better-known sets. Recorded live in 1975 with occasional backing band "The Magic Triangle" (AKA drummer Billy Higgins, double bass player Sam Jones and pianist Cedar Walton), the set eventually saw the light of day on obscure Danish label Steeplechase in 1977. Here it gets the deluxe reissue treatment, appearing on wax for the first time since. Featuring two thrillingly epic workouts and two shorter - but no less impressive - pieces, it's a fine example of the tenor saxophonist's distinctive approach.
