Review: "In Rainbows", Radiohead's seventh album, finally gets a physical release! It's one thing downloading this landmark album, but to actually hold this is something special. Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form.

Review: It's widely agreed that Island is one of the best works in the sprawling Current 93 catalogue. David Michael Tibet's quest into the more mysterious dimensions of our existence has yielded all kinds of musical results, but Island has a certain clarity and direction which lands beautifully. Created in 1990 alongside Icelandic composer Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson, it's an odyssey of technoid synthesis and orchestral poise, guided by strange narration and backed by some astounding singing. You'll instantly be able to recognise the tones of a young Bjork calling through the mist on opening track 'Falling' and it's quite something to hear her indomitable voice held back in the mix. That's the level this astounding album operates at, now carefully reproduced and reissued by House of Mythology.

Review: David Holmes' first solo album since 2008's The Holy Pictures, Blind On A Galloping Horse now comes to Heavenly Recordings. A politically-charged LP full of sonic interrogations of political disaster and turmoil, Holmes here joins the cast of artists using their art to provide solace to music fans suffering at the hands of the Uncertainocene. With updated versions of the previously released singles 'Hope Is The Last Thing To Die' and 'It's Over If We Run Out Of Love', as well as a recording of an unreleased song by Holmes' late friend Andrew Weatherall, we're reminded of conflict, migration and othering, as all manner of voices combine to form a diverse but unified whole against a backdrop of leftfield post-punk - be they the spoken word accounts from Afghan and Ukrainian refugees now welcomed as residents in Belfast, or the French and Irish observers of the UK's turmoil of recent years.

Review: Searchlight Moonbeam is the new narrative compilation from Time Is Away (Jack Rollo and Elaine Tierney), whose eponymous monthly NTS Radio shows - tinctured fusions of fugitive sounds and reverie-inducing archival speech - have won them an ardent following. It follows from the London-based duo's Ballads, a remarkable driftwerk released on A Colourful Storm in 2022. Searchlight Moonbeam is an autumnal dreamscape, intimate and vespertine, pensive and irresolute. An imagined community where differences drop off and resonances emerge.

Track 1 (19:23)
Review: Scottish post-rockers Mogwai dropped their single 'My Father My King' back in October 2001 as a single. Except that it's more than just a single as it is over 20 minutes long and came as a companion to their 'Rock Action' album. It is an epic and sprawling work from the always melancholic and boundary-nudging outfit. For this year's Black Friday, it has been specially reissued for the first time since that original release on limited edition one-sided white vinyl. Just 1500 copies of this exist so do not sleep on a classic bit of Mogwai history.

Review: South London formed band Japan first came together in 1974, led by David Sylvian on vocals, guitar and keyboards with Steve Jansen and Mick Karn also forming the core trio that went on to be joined by Richard Barbieri and Rob Dean. It was in 1982 that Japan headed to, well, Japan, to play the last leg of their tour having achieved plenty of chart success including nine Top 40 UK hits. The recordings here capture their last ever live shows from December of that year and they were broadcast across the country on radio. They have never been on vinyl before now as the entire show is presented in two essential volumes.

Review: The experimental supergroup Vanishing Twin - named after its founding member Cathy Lucas' experience of the eponymous "syndrome" after her identical twin sister was absorbed in utero - have kept up a steady stream of danceable dream pop, cantankerous-contemporary-cosmic, and prodding post-punk since at least 2015. Now their newest album Afternoon X seeks again to break the mould, having been built upon "a vast constellation of instruments, samples, and unclaimed sources", conjuring comparisons to David Axelrod and Scott Walker. Though the songs throughout still get at that feeling of janky dreaminess that Vanishing Twin always nail, it's this reclamation of long-disused cultural reference points - a musical-ideal version of squatting, if you will - that makes this album special.

In Menstrual Night was released in 1986 as two long form pieces that layer up voices into a mesmerising swirl. The cast of collaborators on the project include such luminaries as Steven Stapleton, Keiko Yoshida, Rose McDowall, Boyd Rice and the late John Balance. Review: Ash Ra Tempel are something of a ground zero for the krautrock movement, and their 1971 debut album is the logical first step in exploring this profound, captivating world of sound. Made up an alarmingly youthful Manuel Gottsching, Klaus Schulze and Hartmut Enke, and recorded by the legendary Conny Plank, it's an expansive two-pronged excursion which takes psychedelic rock and plunges it into the possibilities of early electronic music with mesmerising results. This 50th anniversary edition has been put together with due care and attention by Gottsching's label MG Art, and it comes with additional posters, inlays and the informative manifesto of the band as written by Gottsching all those years ago.

Review: Misha Panfilov is an Estonian composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer, based in Funchal, Portugal and Atlantico is a stunning showcase of his work on the Miraaz label. He mixes up psych, prog rock, jazz horns and international rhythms right from the opening moments of the dramatic 'Verticle.' Things take a more wistful folk bent on the jaunt that is 'Alegria Em Movimento' with more expansive jazz stylings taking over on 'Caleidoscopio'. This one comes on heavyweight vinyl and with an insert, plus great artwork, so is a real treasure.

Review: Dark Entries takes it back to New York City in around 1982 for this previously unreleased record from Ike Yard. This cult crew was made up of Stuart Argabright, Michael Diekmann, Kenneth Compton, and Fred Szymanski and they worked in their own realm somewhere between proto-body music and No Wave peers in New York. They disbanded just a year after forming having dropped an EP on Les Disques du Crepuscule in 1981 and then a self-titled album for Factory in 1982. Using the Korg MS-20 and the Roland TR-808 they cook up plenty of hybrid electro-acoustic sounds and ramshackle rhythms that are underpinned by moody baselines and perfect to get bodies moving in the club. Whether you're a post-punk fan or lover of weird electronics, this is well worth checking out.

Review: The Sensual World is the sixth studio album from British pop sensation Kate Bush, released in October 1989 to the ever-expected throng of acclaim. Condensing her literary inspirations into what is arguably her most romantic album, The Sensual World is notorious for its singles ‘This Woman’s Work’ and ‘Love And Anger’, which fuse James Joyce and William Blake intertexts with aspects of her own Irish heritage. But despite the Anglo-Irish pedigree, the album was also noted for its pentatonic melodies and “Oriental reverie”, amounting to a mid-career breakaway into a whole new world.

Cuckoo
Review: Cuckoo was their second full length from Curve - Toni Halliday on vocals and guitar with Dean Garcia - and saw its release in 1993. This album was heavier, focused and featured stronger, more aggressive rhythms that evolved from their first album. Heavily influenced by bombastic urban and electronic beats but favouring shoegaze effects on the guitars, making for a unique combination that made Cuckoo stand out from the rest, ultimately predating similar sounds from bands like Garbage. This album holds key tracks like the amazing 'Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus' as well as the singles 'Missing Link' and 'Super Blaster'. The effects of Curve are still being felt today by those who discover them and fans of the producer Flood should definitely be aware of this album if they are not already. This reissue comes on limited numbered 180- Gram pink & purple vinyl LP complete with an insert.

Review: The third studio album by Scottish post-rockers Mogwai, Rock Action, was produced by Mercury Rev's Dave Fridmann, their first to incorporate synths and other more electronica-slanted textures, marking it out as a maverick LP compared to their many purely instrumental, guitar-centric slowcore projects. As ever with Mogwai, their mood of cryptic, slow-mo sublimatics remains. But there's also an early, innocent sheen on this project not heard on their later albums, be that achieved by more vocal murmurations or a feature from SFA's Gruff Rhys on 'Dial: Revenge'.

Review: Fantastic Voyage: New Sounds For The European Cannon 1977-1981 is one of the most grandiose titles for a record we have come across in a while, but we like it. Fortunately for those involved, the music on this new gatefold heavyweight double album stands up to scrutiny for lovers of sounds that collide electronic, post-rock and experimental with synth, new wave and even a touch of new age ambient. The track list is a big one with tried and tested names like Patrick Cowley, Cabaret Voltaire, the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, Peter Gabriel and more all featuring. It makes for quite the trip and a fine reminder of the magical newness of electronic music back then.

Review: Chelsea Wolfe's latest album, She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She, is a rebirth in process. It's a powerfully cathartic statement about cutting ties, as well as an important reminder that healing is cyclical and circular, and not a simple linear process. From the opening emotes of 'Whispers In The Echo Chamber' - which give electro-gothic Blair-Witchy plods conveyed over lost media - to the closing black-metallic, trip-hop eventide of 'Dusk' - this is everything you could possibly want from a new Wolfe album.

Australian improvisational trio The Necks have been putting on superb live performances for decades. This new album is the best capturing of that yet on vinyl with four sub-20-minute pieces across four sides of wax which rather bucks their usual trend of offering up 60-minute arcs. This, their 19th album, is the result of the band all getting together each day to play off the cuff for 20 minutes. Bassist Lloyd Swanton explains of the process that "it's a really nice communal activity to bring us together in focus each day, and some lovely music has resulted from it." He's not wrong.

Review: Curve are best known among music lovers as one of the few English 90s bands to span the cross-section of industrial dance music and shoegaze and to bring that sound to the alt-mainstream. Their debut studio album, Doppelganger, was the splash album that defined this sound; a maximal, euphoric statement in walls of crunching chords-n'-drums from Dean Garcia and a set of barely-skating-the-mix vocals from Toni Halliday. Purely noisy, cathartic and determined in its slice of style, the likes of 'Lillies Dying', 'Split Into Fractions', and 'Ice That Melts The Tips' all evoke sonic seances of the wildest kind, as if each calling out to some extradimensional, omniscient beast.

Dorothy Carter only released a small handful of records, but Waillee Waillee has since attained a mythical status amongst those in the know. It's not hard to understand why from just one listen, as the lilting bed of zither and dulcimer forms a dense blanket of harmonious drone upon which Carter's voice soars with a choral serenity. It's stirring and spiritual, calling to mind the powerful effect of Laraaji's music but tipping more towards a folk tonality which makes the music entirely unique.

Review: Moody Scottish rock experimentalists Mogwai have got a vast catalogue of post-everything sound that goes from the absorbingly dark and heavy soundtrack to the Zidane film to the spacious, noisy and cacophonous rock drawl of albums like Mr Beast. They are also superb in the live area and have played so many times before for BBC radio that they put together Government Commissions: BBC Sessions 1996-2003 back in 2005 with some of their favourite bits from seven of those sessions. The album is dedicated to John Peel who hosted the bulk of these in the first place.

Review: In many ways Spiderland is lucky to exist., Slint weren't exactly the most avid studio band in the world, only recording two full length albums during the five years in which they were properly active. They also disbanded around the time this record was released - 1991 - perhaps even shortly before, which could have scuppered any plans for their difficult second even after they managed to emerge from a recording facility with enough tracks.

But what tracks they are. Spiderland is rightly considered an absolute landmark, an LP that captures the spirit of rock 'n' roll in transition. Leaving one decade behind, and the hardcore punk that had dominated the underground guitar scene, while still retaining those ethics, it has one foot in grunge, another in experimental, another in garage and a fourth somewhere else. Enough limbs to mark it out as a real mutant.

Review: LA based industrial trio HEALTH have had quite the curious trajectory from their confrontational noise-rock beginnings, to providing the acclaimed score to Max Payne 3, all the way to redefining themselves as a gritty, synth-metal behemoth on 2019's Vol 4: Slaves Of Fear. Following on from their lockdown-inspired two-part Disco 4 collaborative project which boasted cuts written in tandem with artists ranging from a multitude of differing sonic spheres, such as alternative hip-hop (JPEGMAFIA, Ghostemane) to hyperpop (100 Gecs) and even grindcore (Full Of Hell), their latest endeavour appears to be taking cues from both their more vicious experiments as well as their newfound collaborative ethos. With features from the likes of Godflesh and Willie Adler of Lamb Of God, whilst embracing both their metallic and techno-leaning indulgences simultaneously, Rat Wars promises to distil the myriad of components essential to the sonic makeup of HEALTH into one oppressive, melancholic, hellish, absorbing and vital collection.

Review: The DFA debut of longstanding member Jayson Green also signals the revival of the classic DFA twelve-inch format, so you might playfully suggest it stands for Dying Formats Always. Jay has lent his vocals to various bands such as Panthers, Violent Bullshit, Cheeseburger, and the renowned hardcore group Orchid, always showcasing his wit and humor without veering into cynicism. Assuming a bandleader role, he presents a classic A-side here with the low slung funk of 'Local Jerk,' which was recorded during a lively party. It has tight disco drums, resounding claps and a groove-inducing bassline with big horns. On the B-side, 'I Need Love' unfolds as a darkly humorous nightlife satire.

Review: The sixth studio album by the Scottish post-rock band Mogwai, The Hawk Is Coming, came as yet another testament to the band's ingenious cinematic post-rock oeuvre. Ten instrumental pieces ranging from the measured and atmospheric, to the explosive and climactic, paint an implicit picture: anything could be read into this bald-eagled opus, from heartbreak over the broken promise of freedom to the ecstasy of psychic rebirth. Now for the heads, it's remastered and repressed on a limited white vinyl 2xLP.

Stop Apologising (Cosmodelica extended remix) (7:26)
Review: The injunction to "stop apologising" can be affirming or destructive at the same time, depending on how you look at things. It's also the name of the new single from David Holmes' forthcoming album Blind On A Galloping Horse, which captures this contradiction quite nicely: a tripletting, dark electro come hi-NRG sound provides the dark underside to Raven Violet's angel-inside-your-head lyrics: "stop apologising for things you've never done / stop catastrophizing, get your feet back on the ground." The resistant, prefigurative political bent of Holmes' music is well-reflected here, striking at the heart of his personal philosophy: carve out some headroom for yourself, you don't need to take so much responsibility; such is the bedrock of effective action. Oh, and the remixes by Horse Meat Disco and Cosmodelica are wicked as well.

Review: When Mogwai crept into earshot in 1997, post-rock was still a relatively novel idea. The band themselves seem nonplussed by the awkward definition, but what they presented in their brooding, orchestral compositions for the traditional band set up were certainly taking rock music into exciting, uncharted territory. There's lyrical beauty in the playing on this, their debut album, and moments of searing intensity where it counts. These qualities sound all the better for the brilliant remastering treatment, which helps the album positively leap off the sky blue vinyl. Lifelong fans will rejoice, and new arrivals will find their minds blown by a true landmark debut from this most mighty of alternative rock bands.

Review: An incendiary, iconoclastic album in the intersection of shoegaze, metal and post-rock, Sunbather by Deafheaven has more or less gone down in recent history as a supreme meme, one of those projects whose popularity on the Internet is more than likely to render it godlike status for decades to come. This remixed version is not a 'remix album' as received ideas of 'remixing' might suggest, but rather a full-blown re-mix and remaster by the band's very own Jack Shirley, who intends to continually bolster its monolithic status by giving a fresh sonic rundown. Most notably, this edition is tailored to spatial audio setups, so that the most obsessively audiophilic among us might bask in its newfound three-sixty-degree washes. That, too, comes with a new coloured vinyl pressing and freshly designed sleeves to boot.

Review: Loudest rock band in the world? Possibly. At one point? Definitely. Feel Good Now certainly proves the theory, with the second live album from Swans, recorded during their 1987 Children of God tour, capturing some of the zeitgeist of seeing them in the flesh. The fact all this was captured using a Sony Professional Walkman only emphasises just how much zeitgeist there was to capture. Remastered for this edition, fans of the grit and heaving atmosphere that came with the original will be glad to know that all the 21st Century bells, whistles, and high tech restoration couldn't make this one sound clean. And we mean that in the best possible way. Running through monstrous track after monstrous track, even heard through the other side of 25 years and without a massive venue rig, it's impossible not to pick up on the sense of immersion that has always defined Swans.

Review: "Rich-poor divide widens. Unemployment soars. The East and West eyeball each other on the brink. 2022 isn't too far off the 1980s. Contort Yourself know this." A second collection of distortion soaked didactics from across the globe, all created specifically and exclusively to express wanton abandonment; marginalisatioan and alientation via tiny tape runs, but lovingly rustled up into a 21 track gem of a compilation. Rusted guitar strings, cobbled drum machines and fire in the belly - a soundtrack of despondent despair, a lament of languid lechery, an anthem of what was then and still is now.

Review: One part of a large reissue bundle coming out to retrospect the work of Scottish post-rockers Mogwai, this repress and remaster of Happy Songs For Happy People serves to recall the band's early-noughties expansion outwards into using more electronic instruments and effects. Also an aesthetic curveball for Mogwai at the time - there are no vocals from Stuart Braithwaite this time, nor are progressions, famously, as generic as their then-expected "quiet-loud-louder" structure - the album was in general an experiment, atonal breakdowns and a general cacophony undercutting its no less massive and dynamic sound.

Documenting the entirety of their final performance at the dearly departed Roppongi home of Tokyo underground institution SuperDeluxe in November 2018, the music spread across these six sides splits the difference between the guitar-bass-drums power trio moves and experiments with novel instrumentation that have defined the trio's decade of working together. Review: Produced by Brian Paulson at River North Recorders in Chicago and released by Touch and Go Records in April of 1991, the six songs on Slint's Spiderland (now reissued on the same label) methodically mapped a shadowy new continent of sound. The music is taut, menacing, and haunting; its structure built largely on absence and restraint, on the echoing space between the notes, but punctuated by sudden thrilling blasts of unfettered fury. It is a sound that no one had heard before and that no one will ever forget. The eerie, now-iconic black and white cover photo of the four-band member's heads breaking the surface of the water was taken by their friend Will Oldham. Spiderland spawned a whole new genre, frequently called post rock, and came to be regarded as one of the most important and influential records of the past thirty years.

Review: Habitat Ensemble is a new musical collective that is led by musician Marius Houschyar and this is their self titled debut album on the delightful Music From Memory. The group has roots in the south of the Czech Republic where, we're told, outsiders and creatives have been meeting at a summer school since the 1990s. It was in the summer of 2022 that this group came together, inspired by the idea of exchanging the down cultural and musical ideas through music. They first started out with a series of multidisciplinary workshops which then blossomed into this full length - a fusion of jazz, ambient, world music and experimentation that is organic and enriching.

Review: First released in 1998, the last album from the sadly missed Mark Hollis was originally set to be a Talk Talk album, scheduled to follow up 1991's "Laughing Stock". Described by engineer Phil Brown as "open, restful and at times fantastically beautiful", Hollis' only solo effort is quite the opposite of the dark and claustrophobic direction of Talk Talk's final album. Entirely self-produced, the record takes Talk Talk's pared back, emotive intimacy further into yet more minimal, private territory, of sometimes almost unbearable intensity. A complex, compelling last dispatch from an indisputable genius.

Review: Originally formed in 1977 (the year punk supposedly died), the Mark Perry-led collective known as Alternative TV are often cited as one of, if not, the first act to marry reggae rhythms to punk rock motifs. Refusing to rest on these laurels for long, however, the group would go on to utterly defy easy categorisations over the ensuing decades, with their 1979 second album Vibing Up the Senile Man (Part One) eschewing much of the anthemic mayhem of their debut The Image Has Cracked, in favour of a more experimental free-jazz form. This early anecdotal evidence is vital when attempting to unpack their new eleventh LP Direct Action. Following on from 2015's Opposing Forces, and serving as their first project of new material in almost a decade, this latest collection opts to be their most challenging, impenetrable and unwelcoming yet. Utilising tape loops, isolated guitar passages, minimal vocals and an overall industrial-leaning quality, the fact that the group so many decades ago had their first rehearsals at Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records studio seems like no great revelation in retrospect. Unconcerned with listener expectation or radioplay, Direct Action demands animated response yet refuses to offer any helping hand down its path of caustic, alien sonics.
