Review: Although artists often claim not to read their reviews, Doja Cat clearly does. Scarlet, her fourth album, is a direct reaction to criticism of her rapping and the pop-leaning nature of her later work. So while she does sing at times, it's her sassy, confident and dextrous verses - alongside beats and basslines rooted in r&b and hip-hop, with plenty of high-profile sample flipping thrown in (see recent single 'Paint The Town Red', which utilises elements of Dione Warwick classic 'Walk On By'). The results are undoubtedly remarkable and -in her words - "masculine", with highlights including the strutting and insanely weighty 'Demons' (whose lyrics are a direct attack on critics and misogynistic male rappers), the Rotary Connection-goes-r&b shuffle of 'Attention' and the deep, head-nodding wooziness of 'Balut'.

Review: The original sleazy stars of the synth-pop boom, Soft Cell made their presence felt in an instant when they debuted with Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret and their perennial classic cover of Northern Soul standard 'Tainted Love'. Marc Almond and Dave Ball had a widescreen vision of what their music represented, leaning in on a neon-lit, night-walking vision of early 80s Britain which was more candidly outrageous than most were prepared for. Review: From The Go-Gos through to her blockbuster solo career, Belinda Carlisle had a busy time of it in the 1980s. In the wake of her huge success with 1987's Heaven On Earth she returned two years later with Runaway Horses, and continued to charm the world with her stadium-sized brand of uplifting drive time pop. The biggest hit from the record is surely 'We Dream The Same Dream', but the likes of 'Leave A Light On' and 'La Luna' are also classics in the Carlisle canon. Now the album has been half-speed remastered, and comes in a tidy reissue format with a booklet and an obi-strip - a collector's edition if ever we saw one.

Her songs seem to grow better with age if anything so they are always going to keep reappearing on vinyl. It was released back in 2019 and now arrives on vinyl via Disney on a nice orange pressing. All the songs were written into the script of the movie and many of the original pieces were in fact penned before the film so the pictures were made to match the sounds. The album managed to climb to the Top 10 of several charts around the world.

Review: For many young film lovers today, Call Me By Your Name might have just been their first ever experience of homosexuality represented on film. It also put heartthrob Timothee Chalamet on the map, so it's not a film without its dues owed to it. Few still know of the star-studded cast of soundtrack pieces cobbled together for the film, in some cases commissioned, in others licensed from prior recordings. Notably, original compositions from the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Ryuichi Sakamoto make up the atmospheric bulk of it, largely centring on hauntingly beautiful piano pieces tempered by transitional voices and well-controlled rooms. Elsewhere come a smattering of romantic, synthy, Euro classics from FR David's 'Words' Franco Battatio's 'Radio Varsavia'.

Review: Bebe Rexha makes dance-pop relevant again with her self-defining third studio album Bebe, which is sure to cement her already-established credo as one of the underdogs of the contemporary pop landscape. Commencing its making back in December 2021 - beginning with 'Seasons' the first song written for the album - the album overall charts a definable blend of influences, notably that of 70s pop, Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks (all of which are nonetheless channelled in a more bubblegum context). Of course, it also features Snoop Dogg on the track 'Satellite' - notably, Rexha is said to have "frequently smoked marijuana" while making the album.

Review: If there's one seasonal single that's as timeless as it is unashamedly cheesy, then it's Last Christmas by Wham! Originally released in December 1984, radio stations quickly began to realise that the constant rotations of the track would cease as December would dissipate. The fact that the song came packaged as a double A-side with 'Everything She Wants' on the flip, meant a sleeper hit was hidden and waiting in the wings to take up almost equal spins as 1985 dawned upon would be listeners (the track even made it number one in the USA on the Billboard Hot 100). Repressed on translucent green vinyl, this 7" re-establishes both the classic Chrimbo anthem and the deceptively exceptional secondary A-side onto a singular slice of miniature PVC to bump out every festive season for that extra ho-fi experience (Holiday Fidelity).

Review: On its 20th anniversary comes a reissue of No Doubt's 1992-2003 singles collection, which brings together the very best of the ska and pop rockers' contributions to music at large over their first decade of stardom. Known as the alt-rock group fronted by Gwen Stefani, No Doubt were a formative act for the spreading of a distinctly American, pop-oriented form of ska punk.
