Review: Mumford & Sons drop a surprise single release alongside Pharrell Williams, 'Good People', delivering on a long-awaited promise to hop in the studio together after years of knowing each other. Finally falling back on their immediate instincts, 'Good People' hears the band and the solo wunderkind sing of tiredness and revelation, making adept use of a dry, driving, sportsmanlike instrumental palette (think hand claps, stomps, gospel harmonies). Though cryptic in theme, the mood on this one-off is one of triumph and impending miracle works to come.

Review: Britain's most successful synth-pop duo might now be in their early sixties, but the Pet Shop Boys are still capable of crafting near perfect songs - as their forthcoming album "Hotspot" proves. There's plenty to enjoy on this taster single, which like the rest of the album was co-produced by Stuart Price. "Burning The Heather" is a warming and autumnal affair, with their usual bright synths being toned down in favour of jangly acoustic guitars and the kind of bittersweet electronic sounds that dominated their superb 1990 album "Behaviour". Flipside "Decide" is a more upbeat and throbbing affair that includes a rare vocal from the sometime "third sexist man in pop" Chris Lowe (albeit one drenched in auto-tune).

Review: Whisper it quietly, but 40 years into the career, the Pet Shop Boys might be about to release their best album in decades. We'll have to wait for that set, Nonetheless, but this taster single - produced, like the LP, by James Ford - certainly suggests we're in for a treat. 'Loneliness' is prime PSB, with sweeping strings, soaring orchestration and double-tracked Neil Tennant vocals rising above a Giorgio Moroder style bassline, metronomic electronic drums and smart synth-work from Chris Lowe. Grandiose, polished synth-pop excellence, basically. As always, the accompanying B-sides are excellent, too, with the cowbell heavy 'Party In The Blitz' (a kind of Pets-do-LCD soundsystem workout) being followed by the moody, analogue-rich electronic chug of 'Through You (Extended Mix)'.

Review: Caroline Polachek was, for ten years at the start of her career, known as a singer/songwriter who added her own unique voice to tunes by Sebastien Tellier, Washed Out and Jorge Elbrecht. She then went solo and has dropped several acclaimed albums since. Now comes this extremely limited 7" which finds her serving up her epic and singular take on the lead piece from the opera 'Last Days'. Her stunning vocals are joined by a 12-piece orchestral ensemble and the music was composed by Oliver Leith. It's another high for this vocal great.
