Don't Hide It Acid Mixes (reissue)
Cat: 267WT 22133. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Don't Hide It (Josh Wink Acid Pussy) (9:29)
  2. Don't Hide It (Alexkid vocal) (6:24)
  3. Don't Hide It (Alexkid Acid club) (6:04)
Review: F Communications, the ling time label run by French techno legend Laurent Garnier, keeps on marking its 25th anniversary with an on point series of releases, remasters and remixes of some of its best moments. For many, Alexkid's 'Dont Hide It' will always be synonymous with the late great Andrew Weatherall, who dropped it into his Fabric mix in sublime fashion. That was the vocal version which is a dirty, rasping, jacking cut with a breathy vocal totally at odds with the filthy production. The a-side is an acid workout from 303 maestro Josh Wink that is quite different, but also just as killer.

  1. Sleeze Funk (6:50)
  2. Break (6:47)
  3. Jazz Sunrise (6:44)
  4. Buddy's Groove (6:37)
Review: 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of Allen "Aubrey" Saei's first 12" release as Panic. Because of this, it seems a fitting time for the long-serving techno producer to return with his first solo single for two years. He begins by wrapping delay-laden synth stabs and tipsy chords around a heavyweight bassline and crunchy machine drums on 'Sleeze Funk', before further exploring dub-tinged alien techno pastures on the similarly impressive 'Break'. B-side opener 'Jazz Sunrise' expertly combines driving drums and insanely weighty bass with drowsy deep house chords and jazzy synth flourishes, while 'Buddy's Groove' is on off-key trip into strange (but brilliant) loop-house/deep techno fusion.

  1. Introspection (feat Polarbear) (5:56)
  2. Stellar (6:14)
  3. Obsession (feat Eli & Fur) (7:02)
Review: More tough rolling tech house with The White Isle in mind (quarantine style, of course) on the ever reliable Gruuv imprint. Label head honchos Audiojack take over for this one, fittingly titled Isolation Tapes 1.The music takes a much different turn than expected over the EP's three tracks: from the tunnelling back room dub of 'Introspection' (feat Polarbear) to the slinky and hypnotic trance inflections of the utterly euphoric 'Stellar' on the flip, which is followed by a collaboration with ascendant London-based duo Eli & Fur on 'Obsession' that goes for an early '90s Chicago vibe in the vein of Larry heard et al.

  1. Hazard (6:06)
  2. Simplistic (6:16)
  3. Night (6:10)
Review: Josh Baker and Alfie Jack were locked down in Devon for two days, and what we have here is the music they cooked up in that time. t's straight down to work on opener 'Hazard', which marries jacking Chicago drums with bubbling melodies and bulbous synth sounds. It's one for both head and heel such is the fusion of both cerebral and visceral qualities. There is a more playful sense of funk to the skipping and airy drums of 'Simplistic', which harks back to someone like Glenn Underground, while 'Night' closes with a mid-90s tech house fluidity that Terry Francis would be proud of.

Review: After capturing the imagination of many late last year, bespoke cutter returns with 5 cuts of skeletal club futurism. Raw yet polished, experimental yet undeniably danceable, stripped bare yet brimming with funk, every sound on this meticulously crafted record hangs in its rightful place. An invigorating release - highly recommended.

Review: Greek DJ and producer Bodj links with his pal and frequent musical sparring partner Roksi for another of their buttery smooth minimal house EPs. This outing is their first time on the fledgling OGE label and it finds them in fine fashion. 'Futurama' is the tightly woven opener, with bass plunging deep down below the frictionless house drums. 'In The Meantime' is powered by a bigger, more prominent bassline and icy hi hats that glide up top and get you in a trance, while 'Manuelle' is another dreamy late night number perfect for close knit dance floors and cosy basements. 'Robodancer' brings the Millsian melodies for a fantastic finale.

Cat: SECRET 028. Rel: 05 Oct 20
  1. Opticamente Avanzando (11:53)
  2. OP.AV (6:26)
  3. Planos De Ausencia (Casualidad mix) (3:59)
Review: After the outstanding Devious EP from the label bosses, Secretsundaze is back with a new 12" from emergent Dominican artist Boundary. Once again, there's a vitality and urgency to the tracks the label is pushing, finding in Boundary a thread of inventive techno that sounds fresh and authentic at the same time. 'Opticamente Avanzando' surges with a Detroit grittiness, ethereal pad swoops and a sizzling carnival atmosphere, stitched together in a masterful, dense mix perfect for peak time transcendence. 'OP.AV' takes things deeper, letting a cascade of synth motifs fall around a nagging, break-embellished rhythm section. 'Planas De Ausencia (Causalidad Mix)' is a striking departure into fractured ambient electronica, where the beats fall apart and slide into new grooves around blissful swathes of melancholy melody. Classy stuff, which should appeal to lovers of vintage techno as well as those craving something new.

  1. Yes No, Maybe So (9:50)
  2. Decisions (Martinez remix) (6:58)
  3. Decisions (8:15)
Review: Following up that terrific remix for homeboys Disuasiv a few months back on Curtea Veche, London based Romanian caLLy returns with this brand new killer which inaugurates new Ibiza based record store More Than Music's new label arm. It's more of the same ethereal tech-house that you've come to know from the man - these are the kind of rolling and understated grooves that will put you in a trance at Sunwaves on Mamaia Beach this summer. From the hypnotic and subtle groove of "Yes No, Maybe So" or when he really brings the funk on the bouncy and trippy tool "Decisions" which also gets a terrific rework by Concealed Sounds main man Martinez. The Copenhagen based Swede delivers some serious swing on one of his renowned concealment dubs.

  3. Attabeat (Topper remix) (7:05)
Review: Since launching their offshoot label in 2018, Ibiza Record store More Than Music (MTM) has offered up a string of rock-solid singles from the likes of Triptil, Mihai Pol and Arapu. The White Isle-based imprint's latest recruit is sometime Eastenderz and Infuse artist Lorenzo Chiabotti. He sets his stall out via bold and ear-pleasing title track "Albatross", where a variety of sparkling, sun-kissed synthesizer riffs and funk-fuelled TB-303 acid lines buzz around a bouncy, bass-heavy tech-house groove. Over on side B it's all about "Attabeat", a smooth and spacey slab of tech-house warmth that Topper subsequently turns into a two-step-influenced dance through low-slung grooves and drowsy, deep space pads.

  2. Cedric Dekowski & Felix Reifenberg - "Pichler" (8:11)
  3. DJ Void - "Messina Bay" (7:50)
  4. DJ Void - "Dolphine Tribe" (5:33)
Review: BinarySound welcomes a trip of new names to the label for a fourth EP which wisely instructs us, Don't Drink Chloroquine. So long as they keep up serving tunes as good as this, we shall do whatever they want: 'Neptuning' is silky and spaced out cosmic tech funk from another dimension, while Cedric Dekowski & Felix Reifenberg's second collab, 'Pichler,' is more slow motion, wonky and unhinged with chopped up sounds and whirring machines making for an off-grid groove. DJ Void then initially heads off into space on his gurgling synth modulations and smooth house grooves on 'Messina Bay' while 'Dolphin Tribe' is a high speed techno trip with metallic drums and pixelated pads from the future.

Review: Over the last three years Dragut Adrian AKA Dragutesku has firmly established himself as one of Romanian minimal techno's leading lights. It's for this reason that Dualism, his first full-length excursion, is so hotly anticipated. So, does it hit the spot? Undoubtedly. Dragut is particularly good at crafting wonky, off-kilter tech-house and minimalistic techno tunes that are sparse and unusual, but also boast tons of percussive funk and swing. These kinds of club-ready tunes form the DJ-friendly backbone of the album, with occasional deeper, darker or even stranger deviations (see the creepy 'Paranormal' and squelchy, electro-fired melodiousness of 'Apus') providing welcome variety. As a result, it's a set you can listen to from start to finish, despite the dancefloor-focused nature of its construction.

EEE 009 (hand-stamped 1-sided heavyweight vinyl 12")
EEE
Cat: EEE 009. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. Track 1 (7:18)
Review: The EEE series may utilise a very simple blueprint - each single-sided, one-track release combines tasty, 21st century tech-house grooves with vocal lifts and instrumental samples from a classic cut - but so far, the publicity-shy producer behind it has yet to put a foot wrong. This ninth instalment in the ongoing series is every bit as alluring as its predecessors, in part because the headline-grabbing Nina Simone vocal samples are used sparingly and dropped into the mix for maximum impact. They mainly appear within the melodious, smile-inducing breakdown, before making way for a return to the track's chunky, seemingly squeezable tech-house groove and sweet, glassy-eyed lead lines. On paper it shouldn't work, but it really does, making this another must-check EEE release.

Review: The latest drop on the consistently brilliant Kimochi comes from Eho Kates, a new project from Todd Gys and Brendon Moeller. While the names involved may be familiar, the resulting sound is something wholly fresh. Certainly, Moeller's rightly heralded instinct for dubwise processes is no great shock, but there's a playful sense of experimentation powering every element of this release from the scuffed, fractured rhythms of 'Anxiety Sensitivity' to the submerged echo chamber surrealism of 'Emotional Distress Endurance'. Inquisitive processes and otherworldly sound design shape out the whole record, shot through with the alluring mystery that defines Kimochi output overall.

Review: Shall Not Fade is Black Loop's esteemed house label, and it recently spawned a new sister imprint Bassment Cracks, which deals in more hardcore and direct grooves. Fir this one, Ron Elliot joins the family with some seriously weight cuts. Fresh off the back of winning the AVA's Emerging Producer award, he is in top form here with 'Haarlem' a bristling cut built on old school drum breaks and glistening melodies. There is also crunchier techno and then blissed out post-rave bangers like 'Sweaty Fiver' on the a-side, and plenty more body rocking beats on the flip.

Cat: TRAUM V245. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Mr Wednesday (7:06)
  2. Little We Know (6:09)
  3. SEM (6:15)
Review: Longtime main room techno cohorts Extrawelt have sure been around a bit, and later in October will release their latest album Extra Welt Hits on Cocoon. But before that the German pair land on Traum with three more of their muscular and robust analogue workouts. 'Mr Wednesday' is a real teeth clenching ride with a taught baseline snaking beneath slapping hits. 'Little We Know' lightened the mood with airy flute sounds and a more rubbery and warm bassline that does some fine acrobatics. Last of all, 'SEM' gets back to paranoid and dark dystopian techno territory and will keep dancers rooted to the spot.

Ya Didn't Go & Do It Again Did Ya
Cat: DB 167CLEAR. Rel: 02 Oct 20
  1. Stop It (6:18)
  2. Ya Didn't (5:46)
  3. Crowd Control (5:53)
Review: Fisher first made his mark in 2017 with his Dirtybird debut, 'Ya Kidding', but it was his 2018 follow-up, Ya Didn't Go and Do It Again Did Ya, that propelled him towards tech-house superstardom. It was pressed in relatively limited quantities first time around, so Dirtybird has decided to reissue it, this time on translucent vinyl. Arguably the most celebrated of the three tracks is flipside 'Crowd Control', a devilish mix of crunchy drums, druggy bass, mind-mangling electronic riffs, twisted vocal samples and big room friendly build-and-release production. Elsewhere, 'Stop It' is a more rolling, bass-heavy affair that reminded us of mid-2000s Switch productions, and 'Ya Didn't' is a sweaty and bombastic slab of low-slung tech-house hedonism blessed with some surprisingly bluesy vocal samples.

  3. Vlad Arapasu - "Egoland" (7:42)
  4. Wickham - "Mello" (7:01)
Review: East End Dubs' Eastenderz label keeps on turning out hugely functional but also charming dub tech that is stripped back to its bones and laced with funk. This new various artist EP packs a powerful punch from the off, with Floog laying down some vital kicks and whirring machine sounds to send any floor into overdrive. Cosmjn then takes us to another planet with his dreamy pads and Vlad Arapasu's 'Egoland' sounds like a classic Terry Francis cut from the mid-90s, so in other words, pure fire. There's no mucking around on 'Mello', a razor sharp closer with hi hats that would cut though steel.

  4. Dynamics (8:01)
Review: Rising UK artist Jake Flory impresses with this new EP on Animal Crossing. It is an EP packed with club-ready tech house cuts, but each one overflows with charming sonic details and a playful sense of charm that elevates them way above merely functional fodder. Importantly, the drum programming is tight, slick and futuristic on all four offerings, with 'Architects Design' also doused in trippy late night neons and waif-like pads. 'Si' is all about the tech funk, and 'Rhode Island' is a resales, kinetic rhythm with freaky vocals and more woozy pads. 'Dynamics' closes out in deep and heads down fashion, perfect for the afters.

  17. Pattern 17 (bonus track) (5:35)
Review: Between 2000 and 2002, Roman Flugel's Tracks on Delivery EP series helped usher in a new era of minimal techno - one built on little more than hypnotic drum machine rhythms and druggy electronic noises. This essential triple-album tells the story of the series, offering up remastered versions of all 15 tracks included on the four 12" singles to date. As you'd expect, it's mostly a collection of surging, stripped-back and mind-mangling techno cuts, but there are also some decent deviations into crunchy club electro and fuller-sounding peak-time workouts. This edition also boasts two previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same period: the super-trippy 'Pattern 16' and the Andrew Weatherall/Blood Sugar-influenced 'Pattern 17'.

  4. Skies Over Sheffield (John Shima Rainclouds Over Renishaw mix) (6:08)
Review: After acrimoniously parting company with Warp Records - a label they helped to establish - in early 1990, Forgemasters (Rob Gordon, Winston Hazel and Sean Maher) continued recording music, most of which has remained unissued ever since. 'Skies Over Sheffield', which Hazel rediscovered on a DAT tape last year, is one such cut. Featuring typically skittish, electro-influenced drums, weighty sub-bass and a mixture of rave-igniting stabs and picturesque organ motifs, it's a genuine lost classic. The must-have original mix comes backed with a trio of 2020 reworks by Sheffield-based producers: a hardcore influenced breakbeat interpretation by Luca Lozano, a bleeping electro revision by 96 Back, and a rolling, futurist house remix from John Shima.

Review: The pursuit of the perfect fusion of minimal and tech house is an endless one that gives rise to fascinating new music each and every day of the week here at Juno HQ. No Tech Just Wax is a fledgling label who recently threw their own metaphorical hat into the market and this fourth Various Artist EP is another strong one. It brings a certain hardcore edge and punk spirit to stripped back club grooves with the opener from FRNK being a case in point. Elsewhere there is alien-infected sound from DJ WEB, rugged electro and head-wrecking acid. This EP's strengths is in its fantastic variation.

  1. Answering Machine (5:40)
  2. OK Atari (5:31)
  3. Drop The Bass (5:50)
  4. Trance NRJ (5:33)
Review: Chat Noir Tools's third missive comes from Marseille, in the steamy South of France, where Jo'z has cooked up some spaced out house and techno weaponry. He's a producer with a decade in the game behind him, and yet this is his first solo EP. The first side is straight business, with tight and taught tech drums and snapping hits run through with withering sci-fi effects and yelping vocals and fizzled bass lines. On the flip, 'Drop The Bass' is a celebratory tune which soars into the cosmos on pounding kicks, while 'Trance NRJ' pairs bird class with turbocharged bass and slapping hits to get any basement in a sweat.

True Out Of Brew
JDF
Cat: JFD 001. Rel: 14 Oct 20
  1. True Out Of Brew (13:55)
  2. From The Best Sources (12:21)
Review: Berlin based Denis Kaznacheev is a Russian artist who makes slick minimal techno, but he is also embroiled in a legal battle. It is alleged that he has been involved in money laundering and dark web activities and has been arrested by German authorities who are trying to extradite him to the United States to face trial. He maintains his innocence, and this label has been set up to raise funds in order to try and help him. Musically, it's deft and detailed tech with hooky drum loops and wonky synth sounds designed to be heard on hi class sound systems. The A-side track is the first to use is own voice, and the flip was written just before his arrest.

  2. LostAct - "Eludom" (6:47)
  3. Stephan Bazbaz - "Datune" (7:32)
  4. Jonny 'N Travis - "I Call U Back" (7:12)
Review: Alessio Viggiano & Akyra's Meslow label is back with another solid various artist EP that's perfectly built for the dancefloor. On MSLW003 we have four killer tunes: Ukranian KiRiK delivers some sublime bass driven tech house awash in hypnotic elements on 'Highway', and Russians Lost.Act follow up with the Cab Drivers influenced boompty business of 'Eludom'. On the flip, Israeli producer Stephan Bazbaz delivers the EP's standout moment with the mesmerizing afterhours minimal funk of "Datune' and the Italian duo Jonny'N'Travis close it out with the rolling drama of 'I Call U Back'.

Sanguina 005
  1. Kirik - "Boat For Us" (8:33)
  2. Macarie - "Angry Patterns" (7:36)
  3. Michel Degen - "I'm Not Romanian But" (7:27)
  4. Bucurie & Dot13 - "One Step Ahead" (7:42)
Review: For its label's fifth edition, Swiss imprint Sanguine serves up an impressive various artist EP, featuring some of the minimal techno scene's rising talents. Sanguina 005 includes Ukranian wunderkind KiRiK who dives deep into the exotic on the mood music of 'Boat For Us', arcane Rominimal delights are surely catered for on the introspective drama of 'Angry Patterns' by Macarie, and coincidentally on the B side, label boss Michel Degen offers up his musical opinion on 'I'm Not Romanian But'. This is wrapped up by another leading light of the Transylvanian scene in the form of Bucirie (with Dot 13) who gets rather hypnotic on the rolling breaks of 'One Step Ahead'.
