Review: Cologne powerhouse Kompakt may not be talked about as much as it once was, but the label continues to put out high quality electronic music with its own distinctive vibe. For proof, check the 19th annual edition of their now legendary compilation series, "Total". There's much to set the pulse racing amongst the 25 tracks scattered across two CDs, from the shoegaze-influenced haziness of Weval's "Are You Even Real" and the picturesque, piano-sporting dancefloor deepness of Tom Demac's "Serenade", to the neo-trance throb of Rex The Dog, the twisted techno intensity of Voigt & Voigt, and the intergalactic electro/rave fusion of Raxon's strobe lit "Raxon".

Review: It's been a long time between drinks for Chris Korda, a transgender artist and activist whose last releases of note came on famed electroclash label International Deejay Gigolo way back in 2004. New album "Akoko Ajeji" is very much a surprise return to action, though its melodious, ear-pleasing and accessible blend of house and techno drums, digital synthesizer sounds and cheery post synth-pop refrains is both striking and hugely addictive. Korda's compositions offer subtle nods towards various vintage house and techno styles - particularly turn-of-the-90s deep house and early Chicago jack - but never sound anything less than thrillingly DIY productions giddily made in back rooms and bedrooms over the last decade and a half.

  23. Louie Vega & The Martinez Brothers - "Let It Go" (TMB alternate version)
Review: The new incarnation of the famous fabric mix series serves up a big one here with Ibiza kingpins and US house torchbearers The Martinez Brothers laying down a fulsome 23 track mix. It brims with the sort of energy that they always have themselves in the booth and takes you on a contemporary trip through the bendy minimal of Cabanne, Frak's percussive workout and some tropical curveballs from The Bayara Citizens. The Brothers also impress with two of their own tracks - "Jam Joint" and "Mistakes" - full of wonky synth work and shuffling drums, and it marks another highpoint in their longstanding career.

Review: While he's continued to offer up occasional singles, Bonn-based producer Dominik Eulberg has not released an album for eight years. It's for this reason that "Mannigfaltig", the former Traum Schallplatten regular's new set, is big news. Interestingly, it's nowhere near as club-focused as you'd perhaps expect, with Eulberg combining his usual glitchy, tech-house influenced beats and sounds with a range of intricate electronic motifs, sumptuous melodies and atmospheric aural textures. There are one or two club cuts, of course, but majority of the tracks bob along at a more sedate pace, with Eulberg offering up cuts that draw influence from IDM and hazy electronica. As a result, it may well be his most coherent and "listenable" album to date.

Review: The annual Cocoon compilation is a perfect snapshot of what's going on in the more popular corners of the European techno scene. Curated by label head and Ibiza party king Sven Vath, this year's edition is a comparatively deep and melodic affair. A big shout goes to Talaboman for their excellently entitled "Big Room Anthemic Groovy Pounding Trance Dub Bomb Superb!" which is indeed a big room anthemic groovy pounding trance dub bomb, while Edward serves up a more twisted roller (the excellent "End Days"), Raxon goes deep with "The Turbulent" and Mark Broom hammers home with tripped out sci-fi banger "Jaded", amongst many other gems.

Review: Having built their reputation through 12" singles for the likes of Crosstown Rebels and Poker Flat, Dan Berkson and James What deliver their debut album, on their freshly minted imprint Modelmaker. Interestingly, Keep Up Appearances is an altogether warmer, melodious and more evocative set than you'd perhaps expect, with a smattering of rich downtempo cuts joining a solid selection of dancefloor-friendly deep house. You can hear a classic dub techno influence in cuts such as "Keep Up Appearances" and "Shadow Theory", while the acid-flecked, soul-soaked "Make It True" sounds like classic Osunlade. Best of all, though, are the more forthright efforts, with the ragged "Seraphim" standing out.

Review: Nobody could accuse Joris Voorn of lazily knocking out a big standard DJ mix on his first contribution to Fabric's long-running series. The long-established Dutch producer has used the opportunity to showcase his studio skills, combining elements from no less than 65 different tracks to create a unique musical journey that brilliantly blurs the boundaries between a DJ mix, album, and remix set. Musically, it's pretty much what you'd expect - deeper, woozier cuts morphing into tougher, harder fare as the set progresses - but it flows wonderfully well. Due to the nature of its' construction, even familiar tracks from the likes of Robert Hood, Plastikman, Deepchord and Voorn himself become vibrant new pieces, as he brilliantly melds them with up to four other cuts at the same time. It works as a mix, but as a showcase for Ableton Live's potential it's out of this world.

Her relationship with Perlon extends back to 2009, where she first surfaced with her Untitled EP and several others over the years since. Sea Of Thee is her third full length album, and sees her deliver a selection of hypnotic reductionist grooves - a perfect afterhours dancefloor soundtrack curated by Nidam as a top selector.

Review: After recent releases on the Save Fabric album, Alola & Jack Trax, Mr.C has delved deep into his musical psyche to deliver an acid master-class that's influenced by Ska, Dub, Electro, Italo Disco, Acid House & Tech House, bringing his roots up to date with this massive modern production. Incidents is about things that can happen while clubbing. Down-tempo tracks Entry Search, A Civil Dose & Quick Exit will dub you out. Slightly quicker Acid Fever & Stand Up will completely groove you & dance tracks Do It For Me, Disco Rebellion, Shape Your Dreams, Raid, Ripple Effect & Master Of The Universe will make you dance like no-one's watching. Incidents is the complete electronic album that pulls all the punches, gives a nod to the past & yet has it's feet firmly embedded in the future. This is easily Mr.C's best solo work to date & essential listening.

  27. Four Tet - "Locked"
Review: The Fabriclive series maintains its fine run of form with Four Tet's eagerly anticipated inclusion into the canon. Stitching together field recordings of the club itself, ambient tracks from Michel Redolfi and David Borden, a selection of lost, dusty UK garage from the likes of Persian and Crazy Bald Heads and recent productions from Burial and Floating Points, it's not so much a DJ set as an impressionistic rendition of Hebden's own memories of clubbing itself. Considering the fact that Hebden's own productions are usually so saturated in melody, it's a relatively dark mix, dominated by murky bass tones and sharp, brittle beats, with a constantly shifting sense of urgency that encourages rapt attention throughout. The stellar mix is capped off with two brand new Four Tet tracks, "Pyramid" and "Locked", which only seek to highlight his growing ability to produce devastating club tracks.

Review: Three cheers for Berlin club institution Watergate, which this month celebrates 15 years of riverside raving in the heart of techno's liveliest city. To celebrate, they've gathered together two CDs worth of previously unreleased tracks from some of their nearest and dearest. Impressive contributions from resident DJs Matthias Meyer, Tiefschwarz, La Fleur, Cinthie and Jimi Jules are joined by equally inspired workouts from producers closely affiliated with the club, including Ellen Allien, Steve Bug, Hyenah (who has delivered some of the best music on Watergate's label in recent times) and Kollektiv Turmstrasse. While naturally rooted in techno, there's plenty of variety to be found throughout (think mutations of tech-house, techno, electronica and ambient), making it a fitting celebration of one of Europe's most iconic nighttime venues.

Review: For his first mix CD in some seven years, James Zabiela has pulled out all the stops. The brilliantly programmed and executed, studio style mix-up contains elements of an impressive 58 tracks across the two discs, which are designed as distinctive "Acts". Act 1 (that's CD1 in old money) is a largely downtempo affair geared towards home listening - a melodious and other-worldly sound soup containing everything from neo-classical reworks and off-kilter ambience to slo-mo progressive house, to mangled R&B breakbeat and lucid, head-in-the-clouds tech-house. Act 2 is an all-out dancefloor assault on the senses, with Zabiela speeding through bombastic, acid-powered jack-tracks, trancey tech-house, raw electro, sparkling techno futurism and grandiose sunrise anthems. It must have been a lot of work, but it makes for magical listening.

Review: For the 42nd stop on the decades-long journey through worldwide DJ culture, Global Underground has pitched up in Berlin and handed over the reins to Patrice Baumel, a Dutch DJ/producer with an impressive track record. The resultant two-disc mix-up is staggeringly good, with Baumel choosing to represent a wide variety of techno and tech-house sounds with occasional diversions into more melodious or off-kilter fare. Wisely, the Dutchman has also chosen to offer up tracks that span the decades, contrasting classic material from the likes of Swayzak, Matthew Dear and Chateau Flight (whose brilliant "Cosmic Race" stands out) with newer cuts from such artists as Shlomo, Steve Moore, Adam Port, Ripperton and the ageless Phil Kieran.

Review: Laudably, the Get Physical crew seems keen on showcasing emerging talents from scenes around the world that have yet to make a global impact. They're at it again here, offering up what we believe to be the first mainstream compilation to focus on underground dance music made in India, a country not previously known for its electronic music heritage. There's much to admire throughout, from the drifting vocals and acid-flecked electro rhythms of Pawas and Arooj Aftab's "Naja" and the exotic, swelling tech-house beauty of Small Town Guy ft. Adil Smaali's "Oasis", to the sitar and tabla driven drug chug of Hamza's "Morchang" and the Giorgio Moroder-inspired brilliance of Todh Teri's "Sampadan 1 (Dub Version)", which is worth the admission price on its own.

Review: For the fourth installment of their Dots & Pearls mix series, in which a selected DJ gets busy with the label's back catalogue, Cocoon has enlisted the services of Frankfurt's Markus Fix. His mix is designed to showcase the melodious and atmospheric tech-house tracks lurking in the Cocoon vaults, and predictably does a fine job of fulfilling this remit. There are impressive contributions from the likes of Sven Vath, Tim Green and Chymera, plus a quartet of previously unreleased tracks. These are invariably excellent; check, for example, Fix's own "Baroon" - a kind of woozy 21st century riff on the '88 "Pure Trance" version of The KLF's "What Time Is Love" - and the ethereal melodies and early morning fuzz of Argy's "How Late It Was, How Late".

Review: John Digweed's popular Live In... mix compilations, which capture the Bedrock chief doing his thing at a club or festival in a particular city, have been getting progressively more epic. While this ninth installment, recorded on New Year's Eve at Output in Brooklyn, is not quite as sprawling as last year's six-disc Montreal edition, it's nevertheless a five-CD beast. While many DJs wouldn't get away with it, "Diggers" does. The five discs perfectly capture a true master at work, moving from atmospheric and melodious warm-up fare to more intense peak-time moments, via all manner of deep house, tech-house, techno and electronica delights. Thanks to the inclusion of crowd noise, you can almost feel the sweat dripping off the walls as Digweed enters his sixth and final hour.

Review: Given the current political climate in the UK, it seems fitting that Romanian minimal house DJ has chosen to open his contribution to Fabric's long-running mix series with Renato Figoli's "Super Lemon Vapor", a track that smartly satirises the attitude of some small-minded Brits to immigration. From here, Raresh runs through some 16 cuts of woozy, tripped out minimal house, peppering productions by his compatriots with the occasional nod across the Atlantic (both Amir Alexander and Hakim Murphy cuts are excellent). If you've seen Raresh play at the Farringdon disco on one of his bi-annual bookings, you know the man has mixing skills and they are most certainly on display here.

Review: On this second album from his Ancient Moons project, Damian Lazarus has decided to switch focus. Whereas the outfit's debut album, Message From The Other World, combined global music influences with Lazarus's usual tech-house rhythms and a touch of psychedelia, Heart of Sky is much more heavily influenced by the Crosstown Rebels' chief's rarely discussed soul boy roots. Of course, the beats and basslines still largely stick to the powder house script, it's just that this time they come accompanied by starry-eyed soul vocals, 1960s dream pop influences, bold piano flourishes, gospel choruses and, on rare occasions, smoky trip-hop aesthetics. As a result, it's undoubtedly a much more "human" album, and one with far more crossover potential than its predecessor.

Review: Congratulations to Hypercolour, a label more renowned for its deep and bass-heavy house output, for coaxing a new album out of eccentric veteran Luke Vibert. Happily, Ridmik - the Cornish producer's sixth solo album under his given name, and first since 2009 - is rather good. Sitting somewhere between the deep, Metro Area-inspired synth disco of Vibert's Kerrier District project and his rougher, acid-tinged work, Ridmik ebbs and flows with attractive looseness. At times woozy and melodic (see the starburst melodies and lazy rhythms of "Six Eight" and smooth title track), at others ragged and twisted (the alien 303 funk of Proper Gander), Ridmik is an impressive set of analogue workouts dripping with synthesized soul. Recommended.

Review: Given that eight years have passed since French techno stalwart Agoria released an album, it's little surprise to find that "Drift" sees him taking what he describes as "a new musical approach". On the accompanying press release, the Gallic veteran has described the set's sound as being inspired by "sitting on your sofa between your guilty pleasure and your tasteful opinion". In other words, it's a more open-minded and eclectic affair that mixes accessible, laidback vocal numbers (see the sparse tech-house-pop of opener "Embrace (feat Phoebe Killdeer)" and cheery chugger "You're Not Alone (feat Blase)" with nods towards wonky, off-kilter electronic hip-hop (STS hook-up "Call Of The Wild") and a swathe of heavier, club-leaning cuts inspired by his love of techno and Italo-disco.

Review: For his third full-length for the constantly enduring Kompakt label, Axel Willner has decided to take his enduring brand of Balearic loop techno to grandiose new heights. Sonically, the template remains the same - intoxicating layers of guitar, voice and ambient synth loops atop hypnotic dancefloor grooves - but the resultant tracks are just, well, bigger - cinematic, even. Given Willner's inherent skill at producing this kind of baggy, organic techno, the results are rarely less than impressive. As a result, Looping State Of Mind makes for thoroughly enjoyable listening, simultaneously appearing ambitiously big and pleasantly intimate. He deserves enormous credit for pulling it off.

Review: Chris Tietjen has long been a valued member of the Cocoon family, and mixed his first CD for the Frankfurt-based label way back in 2006. Here he celebrates a decade of collaboration with a tenth and apparently final mix for the imprint. Partly designed as a look back over the label's releases over the past 10 years, Zehn comes across like a labour of love. Densely packed with tracks - he impressively squeezes some 36 selections into 70 minutes, showcasing work from a veritable who's who of techno talent - it offers a typically fluid, atmospheric, late night-friendly chug through tech-house, minimal and European after-party hypnotism.

Review: The legend from Leipzig Daniel Stefanik helms the third instalment of Dots & Pearls for Frankfurt institution Cocoon. The long time affiliate of the Leipzig's famed Distillery club has been on the scene for over a decade, with releases on the likes of Moon Harbour and Mobilee so you can trust the DJ on this one.. For this edition (said to be a retrospective of sorts for the label) it will come in a continuous DJ mix with some brand new and unreleased tracks. Stefanik will also include four of his own edits including Guido Schneider & Andre Galluzzi's "Mario" and Luca Ballerini's "Impressions Of A Dawn" and "Orizzonte".

Review: When compiling Frequencies, John Digweed wanted it to offer "a snapshot of the perfect Bedrock party". He's arguably done just that, moving from seductive mood enhancing ambience, to throbbing peak-time techno over the course of three impeccably mixed and programmed CDs. Along the way, the DJ formerly known as "Diggers" saunters between a range of warm, melodic and groovy fare - think deep house, tech-house and melodic techno - before unfurling a selection of muscular floor-burners that belie his reputation as a soft-focus progressive house maestro. With a bulging selection of friends, label-mates and frequent collaborators all contributing tracks, Bedrock: Frequencies is a treat for anyone who digs Digweed's distinctive DJ style.

Review: Ever the progressive futurist, John Digweed has decided to celebrate two decades of his Bedrock parties and record label not with an epic retrospective, but rather a compilation entirely made up of new, previously unreleased recordings. In typical Digweed fashion, the first two discs feature these 42 tracks mixed into a seamless journey by the man himself, with the same material featuring in full-length, un-mixed form on discs three and four. For fans of the producer's melodious and atmospheric take on house, techno and downtempo grooves, there's much to enjoy, including sublime cuts from the likes of Yunus Guvenen, Guy J, Marc Romboy, Oliver Lieb, Nick Muir (Digweed's long-serving studio partner), Quiver and Pig&Dan.

Review: In April 2017, regular collaborators Oliver Koletzki and Niko Schwind shipped the contents of their Berlin studio to a small cottage in Cape Town's Noordhoek area. Over the course of the month that followed, and inspired by the stunning beauty of their surroundings and the heritage of the region's indigenous people, the German duo produced an album they say forms "a contemporary narrative on ancient dance rituals". Notably more musically expansive with greater use of bold melodies and a range of rhythmic approaches, Noordhoek pairs percussive, tech-tinged deep house shufflers and heavier, early morning dancefloor workouts with slower cuts that variously touch on eyes-closed ambient and mid-tempo Balearic chuggers.

Review: The rise of London producer Daniel Avery has been little short of staggering. Less than two years ago, he was relatively unknown beyond the confines of blogland. Now, thanks to a string of acclaimed productions and a blossoming DJ career, he's been afforded the opportunity to mix the latest instalment of the FabricLive series. Musically, FabricLive 66 offers a snapshot of where he's at now, delivering a tough but flowing mix of fuzzy electronic rhythms, stripped-back techno, gnarled acid house and tactile, next-level electronica (see Gatto Fritto's superb remix of JR Seaton's "Way Savvy"). There are also occasional forays into electroclash-ish territory (Miss Kittin, Raudive) and a smattering of Avery's own productions, making FabricLive 66 a formidable proposition.
