Review: Anders Trentemoller was the noughties' greatest crossover star. From his humble beginnings releasing sleek tech house on imprints like Naked Music, Audiomatique and of course Berlin's Poker Flat - who released his modern classic The Last Resort in 2006. It gets a much deserved reissue here. Trentemoller went on to form his well received In My Room imprint, and go on to headline festivals and pack out stadiums with his acclaimed live show since. The Danish producer's debut album is actually appearing on vinyl for the first time here on a triple disc gatefold and featuring all 13 songs. The album received fantastic acclaim from both fans and journalists around the world and made it into the top-lists of the month, year and decade - alongside an array of awards for best production or best album.

  1. Give Up The Ghost (Thriller Houseghost remix)
  2. Codex (Illum Sphere remix)
  3. Little By Little (Shed remix)
Review: The fourth King of Limbs remix 12" sees headline duties going to Actress and Lukid under the Thriller moniker. Their remix of "Give Up The Ghost" takes the pastoral tone of the largely acoustic original and puts the ghost firmly in the machine, as Yorke's vocals are stretched out over a spiraling background of compression and synthetic interference, held together with only a tight kick. Shed's remix of "Little by Little" begins with whirring clockwork percussion over a looping guitar line, and a deep sub-bass, stretching its gloomy tension out over three minutes before finally breaking into a trippy 2-step death rattle. It's the Illum Sphere remix of Codex that really impresses however - avoiding the dancefloor route, the young producer takes the most gut-wrenching vocal moment from the track and turns it into a warm analogue hymn that takes the original and elevates it to new heights.

  10. Tin Man - "Verity Acid" (5:42)
Review: Lorenz "Recondite" Brunner established the Plangent label five years ago, largely to release his productions. After a lengthy hiatus, the German imprint returns with Compilation 1, a collection of previously unheard material from "friends of the label". There's naturally much to admire, from the fluid ambient chords and lilting IDM percussion of Ricardo Donoso's "There Is Still Time", and the ocean-deep pulse of Mind Against's "LongBrightDark", to the locked-in European tech-house shuffle of Scuba's "Nesh", and the outer-space, acid-tinged ambience of Tin Man's brilliantly evocative "Verity Acid". Naturally, Brunner dons the Recondite guise, too, weighing in with the melodious deep house smoothness of "Solan".

Review: Nestled comfortably on his constant home of Erased Tapes, Rival Consoles imparts another collection of plush forays into warm, melodic synthesis for those who like their instrumental electronic music scuffed with a little earthly charm. With the same starry-eyed innocence that bursts out of Nathan Fake's music, tracks like "Helios" leap with great strokes of synth and upsurging drums, carefully running threads of live instrumentation into the fold through some canny processing. The progression of each track is a beautifully crafted story with pleasant surprises aplenty but always reaching a logical resolution, making for a thoroughly rounded and satisfying listening experience without losing that all important bite of intrigue.

Cat: TGR 003. Rel: 28 Mar 17
  1. 1984 (11:06)
  2. Pocket Love (17:24)
Review: Aksel Schaufler's roots homage continues with the third instalment of Golden Ravedays. Once again it's another luxurious extensive adventure on both sides. "1984" takes the A, sliding in at a modest 11 minute length wrapped up in warm, warped Jim Noir-esque organs, subtly developing into a breakbeat-driven wall of sound. "Pocket Love" takes a longer jaunt where the drums are the only constancy amid unpredictable ebbs and flows of synths lapping and overlapping with a slight hint of Holdenist chaos. Another golden chapter of two-sided immersion.

  1. Bluesin (17:04)
  2. Burkina (13:35)
Review: The fifth chapter of Superpitcher's Golden Rave Days comes very quickly after the last outing and this makes us perk up with joy given just how special this material is. No jokes; this is Aksel Schaufler's best work in years, and perhaps even surpasses the man's extensive appearances for the likes of the mighty Kompakt imprint. Each one of these EPs has been different and explorative; this time "Bluesin" approaches a house flex through slow, tribal-like percussion and African vocals, ending up with a truly enchanting piece of mid-tempo dance music. Over on Side B, "Burkina" retains that subtle tribalism, and the mystical percussive pulse, except that here the mood is darker, more moving and just on the right side of eerie. Another fine addition to this increasingly pleasing series.

  2. #CF2525 B (14:13)
Review: By now, we should all be familiar with RORA's matter-of-fact ODE offshoot, a minimal house and techno imprint that revels in the anonymity of its producers. Predictably, the label's latest missive is from another unnamed studio buff. Happily, both tracks are up to the label's usual high standards. On the A-side you'll find a pleasingly fluid and spacey roller crafted from a relatively sparse palette of sonic assets: think languid, two-step influenced beats, starry melodies, indecipherable spoken word snippets, rich bass and floatation tank chords. The 14-minute flipside moves further towards traditional tech-house/minimal techno territory, albeit with some tripped-out jazzy guitar samples and swirling late night sonics.

Review: Varme continues its musical exploration, with the purpose of releasing and promoting under the radar artists, carefully selected by its founder Paul Popa. Second release is by Crump, a rising producer from UK, who provided 3 tracks with a minimalistic touch + a breaksy remix by long-time friend Christian Jay.

  2. Keep Control (7:31)
Review: Ascendant Ukrainian duo ARTBAT (Watergate/Diynamic) had the task of remixing Y2K progressive house hit "Keep Control" by German trio Sono - and have performed the task well here for Playmade sister label &nd. An expression in moody and hypnotising dancefloor drama, this one will have you under its spell in no time, and will no doubt be in the sets of many big DJs this year - 20 years on from the release of the original. Respectfully, the original version is featured on the flip, and it hasn't lost any of the magic that it had two decades ago when it was an anthem at the afterhours.
