Not Going Back (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: GR 001. Rel: 01 Jun 15
  1. Not Going Back (original mix) (6:16)
  2. Not Going Back (Jay Tripwire's Marimba Machine Redux) (7:51)
  3. Not Going Back (Grant Dell's Euro mix) (8:31)
Review: Giant Records is the new label from Grant Dell, a man that has been at the forefront of the tech-house scene for over 15 years and has amassed a truly enviable back catalogue of releases. Giant's first release is from Mark Allister, whose skill for crafting a proper old school tech-house groove on "Not Going Back" is more than matched by his talent for laying down vocals. Complementing this original, Jay Tripwire turns in a self-styled "Marimba machine redux", whilst label head Grant Dell chooses to focus on Allister's vocal for a remix that possesses keys that wouldn't sound out of place on a Kraftwerk track. Supported by Mr G, Doc Martin, Eddie Richards, John Digweed, Richie Hawtin.

  13. NooOoo
  14. Auroville
Review: Though his career has taken many turns over the last decade, DJ Koze has remained that most illusive of creatures: a minimal-minded producer with an ear for a melody. This fourth full-length, packed to the rafters with big-name collaborations (Apparat, Caribou, Ada and Matthew Dear all feature), continues his move towards the home-listening sphere. So, while many of the heady rhythms and shuffling grooves hark back to his stripped-back past, Amygdala impresses with its woozy songs, genre-straddling fusions (see the modern soul meets deep house of "Homesick" or the steppy, tropical vibes of "Marilyn Whirlwind") and homely atmosphere.

Trivial Occupations (gatefold 2xLP + MP3 download code)
Cat: SAT 038LP. Rel: 24 Oct 18
  1. At First A Wide Space (2:51)
  2. St Catherine & The Calm (12:23)
  3. Song For Aguirre (4:24)
  4. Trivial Occupations (9:13)
  5. Dalloway (4:28)
  6. Recital Of Facts (4:56)
  7. Parklife (3:56)
  8. Minor Forms (5:43)
  9. Beaumont (4:46)
  10. No Useless Leniency (4:49)
Review: On previous albums, Francis Harris has tackled some weighty subjects, including memory, loss and grief, intertwining these artistic inspirations with a woozy, organic and multi-layered deep house framework. "Trivial Occupations", his third full-length excursion, is not only less conceptual in tone, but also marks a conscious attempt to move away from the constraints of the dancefloor. Of course, there are still hypnotic, ultra-deep house beats scattered around the album, it's just that they largely operate at a more leisurely pace and usually come smothered in crackling field recordings, ambient chord sequences and slowly shifting melodies designed to worm their way into your consciousness. Combine these cuts with some superb, beat-free ambient explorations, and you have a hugely atmospheric and entertaining set.

Cat: TRH 001. Rel: 19 Aug 13
  1. Roua Diminetii
  2. O Seara De Ragaz
Review: Named after a small island on the Danube river (submerged during the construction of the Iron Gate dam), Ada Kaleh debuts on The Rabbit Hole label a week and a half before launching his own self titled imprint. For this release, Roua Diminetii, Kaleh blends watery field recordings and warbling, dubbed out synths with the minimal and shuffling grooves patented to the deeper house sounds of eastern Europe. An accomplished debut.

Incapable (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: SKINT 403LPB. Rel: 29 Jan 20
  1. Incapable (8:24)
  2. Incapable (Crooked Man part 3 mix) (8:22)
Review: Having done the rounds digitally for what feels like an eternity, Roisin Murphy's Crooked Man-produced anthem finally returns to vinyl (it was originally released, with no credits, on Bitter End in 2018. For the uninitiated, the A-side original mix is a near perfect fusion of memorable boogie bass, echoing deep house chords, snappy drum machine beats and clipped guitars topped up with a weary, lovelorn vocal from Murphy that's one of her most impactful and memorable to date. The flipside "Crooked Man Part 3 Mix" is a little less than a total transformation. It sees the Hathersage-based former Bleep & Bass producer place Murphy's care-worn vocal atop a sparse mixture of wonky techno electronics, weighty sub-bass and snappy machine drums.

AMOUR 001 (12")
Cat: AMOUR 001. Rel: 18 Jan 19
  1. Trailblazer (9:08)
  2. Altitude (7:15)
  3. Nightfall (8:16)
Review: For the label's first release, German imprint Amour has recruited rising star Noah Skelton, a producer who has previously served up tech-house treats on Silencio, Mayak and Cabinet Records, amongst others. Skelton starts in fine style with "Trailblazer", a wonderfully dreamy, funk-fuelled affair that joins the dots between the spacey, futurist sound of 1990s tech-house and the rolling chunkiness of more contemporary tech-tinged fare. He reaches for deep space chords once more on similarly inclined flipside cut "Altitude" - all two-step-influenced house beats, ultra-deep electronics and fireside-warm bass - while closing track "Nightfall" is a swirling, early morning roller of the type that Parisian crew Yoyaku has been serving up all year.

The Golden Ravedays 5 (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: TGR 005. Rel: 23 May 17
  1. Bluesin (17:04)
  2. Burkina (13:35)
Review: The fifth chapter of Superpitcher's Golden Rave Days comes very quickly after the last outing and this makes us perk up with joy given just how special this material is. No jokes; this is Aksel Schaufler's best work in years, and perhaps even surpasses the man's extensive appearances for the likes of the mighty Kompakt imprint. Each one of these EPs has been different and explorative; this time "Bluesin" approaches a house flex through slow, tribal-like percussion and African vocals, ending up with a truly enchanting piece of mid-tempo dance music. Over on Side B, "Burkina" retains that subtle tribalism, and the mystical percussive pulse, except that here the mood is darker, more moving and just on the right side of eerie. Another fine addition to this increasingly pleasing series.
