Review: After Hamid kicked off the H+ label last year he returns with an intriguing double pack that draws on a wide variety of collaborators to turn out some truly innovative leftfield house music sounds. There's an overarching theme of micro house hovering around Methods For The Madness Vol 1, but it's far from run of the mill stuff. The opening cut featuring Josh Tweek is a sparkling, swinging affair that piles on the funk and the delirious effects, while Jesse Morrison's own turn on the closing track winds up in a haunting, abstract slice of refined reduction.

Review: Circle Of Live is a collaborative electronic project led by the Swedish techno artist Sebastian Mullaert. It aims to reevaluate the structures of performance, linking artists and their machines for improvised jams. It debuted at Baskerville Hall as part of Wales based Freerotation festival, featuring a revolving cast of musicians, who in this incarnation included such big names as Mathew Jonson, Dorisburg and Johanna Knutsson, alongside festival and label co-founder Steevio. With artists like this linking up, you can just imagine what kind of magic they'd possibly conjure up and we can assure you it's absolutely sublime. These five excerpts from the live performance capture some of their most dynamic and spellbinding moments.

Review: Up next on DJ Kicks' acclaimed mix series is Numbers doyen and Glaswegian iconJackmaster. In his own words, the 24-track mix sees the charismatic Scot 'delivering an honest journey, unearthing a serious passion for the obscure boundaries of house and techno.' This double LP lifts out eight of the tracks most other DJs will want to get their mitts on, and joins the dots between his hometown of Glasgow with Denis Sulta's festival destroying bass driven epic "MSNJ", then NYC; with Eli Escobar's gutsy EBM-flavoured 'Tension (vinyl mix)". Berlin's status as a dance music mecca is referenced with Dutch transplant Anno Stamm's dark house stomper "A Night Out With Therese" and the legend himself Ricardo Villalobos, with his minimal techno classic from 1996 "Logohitz". DJ Kicks throw in a CD of the mix too!

Battle Of The Planets
Review: Marking over 16 years as an artist, Robert James unveils his debut album Battle of The Planets. A milestone in any musician's career, the LP illustrates the breadth of Rob's tastes and influences, exploring the rugged terrain of planet electronica. Ranging from breaks and electro to house and techno, Battle of The Planets was made during lockdown, a period of creativity and isolation for many artists around the world. Across 10 skillfully produced cuts Rob takes us on an intrepid adventure into the cosmos, where mysterious atmospheres and uplifting melodies sit side by side with captivating dance floor rhythms. Many shades of his personality come through on this album, all tied together by his unique sonic identity; informed by his years spent on the dance floor, behind the decks and in the studio. On Battle of The Planets Robert James presents a distillation of his extensive knowledge and experience into one succinct, highly engaging body of work.

Review: Jay Tripwire's My Life With The Machines compilation series is doing a terrific job of showcasing some of the umpteen early noughties gems buried in his catalogue and archive of unreleased jams. This is volume four (the first three instalments dropped in 2022) and features seven more slabs of intergalactic, wide-eyed, dub-fired tech-house treats. He begins with a sumptuously spacey and loved-up rework of Mothersole & Haris's 'Dumbek', before adding echoing sax sounds and dubbed-out organ lines to a heady early morning groove on 'What Kind of Voodoo Do You Do?', an alternate take on one of his most admired tribal-tinged tracks from 2002. Other highlights include the ultra-deep after-party excellence of 'Smoothin' It Out', the heads-down excellence of 'Smooth Swimmers (Swag Unreleased)' and the warming shuffle of 'Geometry'.

Review: Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana have been a fine production partnership for a while now. They craft a cuddly, heartfelt brand of deep house that is heavily influenced Mediterranean landscapes, colour and ways of life. Their new double album on Batti Batti is another classy, deep and cultured record that open on a lithe elector workout with rich boogie bass. There are also plenty of trademark smoky-deep house grooves, lo-fi beat workouts like 'West Coast' and subtle bumpers for the cosier club spaces out there. The synth interludes like 'Blurred Vision' help this play like a full listening experience, too.

Review: Jeigo's debut album Curulean is an album of escapists sounds that was written during periods of isolation, like so much music over the last few years. There is a quiet artistry and real tenderness to these cuts whether fully ambient like the opener or gently rhythmic like 'Overwhemler.' 'Lost River' is a shimmering fusion of delicate drum breaks and off grid hits with icy voices and percussion and '18 03 95 Brock & Groove' cuts loose on rubbery, rugged rhythms with blasts of bass and whirring machines. It's a cutting edge exploration of house electronics that deserves your attention.

Review: These days, we're all familiar with Jan Jelinek's trademark brand of dusty, dubbed-out, jazz-sampling downtempo explorations. That wasn't the case when Loop Finding Jazz Records, his acclaimed debut album, first appeared back in 2001. It has since become an in-demand item, making this reissue more than handy. It remains a fine album; a blazed shuffle through a sonic world where dub techno, ambient, minimal house, jazz and downtempo grooves and seductive vinyl crackle merge into one intoxicating hybrid sound. It's not showy and over-the-top, but rather becalmed and subtly seductive. In other words, it's still a brilliant album and if you don't own already own a copy, you should add this to your cart sharpish.

Review: Jimmy Batt's 'Retrospection' album is a live and direct shot of rave nostalgia direct to your veins. Importantly, the tune shave a modern styling that keeps things fresh. Right from the off and opener 'Rainbow Road' it is clear the production here is next level. The crisp, punchy beats, bright pixelated melodies and warm chord smears all have well-defined places in the mix and make the track really pop. There are IDM influences, whirring machine break downs and stomping techno cuts along the way, as well as a fine remix from DMX Krew. Vital.

Review: California's Joe Babylon has been steering his own Roundabout Sounds through some lovely deep house waters over the last few years. Now the producer makes a big statement with his own debut album. He is something of a veteran having co-founded Plug Research back in 1994 and hosted underground events in Los Angeles during the mid '90s. Following on from outings alongside the likes of Rick Wilhite and Rondenion he now brings his own dusty, carefully disheveled house sounds to the fore. They have been crafted using an MPC which gives them their rough-edged appeal and they go from heads down back room joints to dubbed-out minimalism via dream late-night reveries. It makes for a fresh take on a tried and tested house template.

Review: After impressing the heads with two intriguing albums on BAR25, German producer Matthias John pops up on Cocoon with this third full-length. The Keys is a curiosity, in many ways, as it's far more melodically upbeat and noticeably warmer than much of Cocoon's output. Musically, it takes the 4/4 rhythms of deep house and techno as its base, layering up shuffling rhythms of all manner of fuzzy synths, curious old electric pianos and woozy electronics. It's a formula that regularly makes for entertaining listening, even at its oddest (and the vocal contributions on "The Interview (Part 1)" and "The River" are definitely strange).

Review: The rise of Jamie Jones over the past two years has been nothing short of meteoric. Now officially the world's number one DJ (according to readers of Resident Advisor, at least), Jones could record and release the sound of a car alarm and it would be hailed a "classic". Cynicism aside, the Crosstown Rebels regular has made some extremely high quality house over the years, as this collection of previously unreleased archive material so adroitly proves. Expect plenty of soft, touchy-feely material (including an excellent collaboration with Art Department) that offers plenty of thrills for fans of the Visionquest/Crosstown Rebels sound.

Review: He might now be a headline DJ who plays only the biggest clubs and festivals in the world but there was a time when Jamie Jones was firmly entrenched in the underground. During those years he turned out some fresh and spaced out house and tech on various labels including Crosstown. Damian Lazarus's label is where he put out his Don't You Remember The Future album back in 2009 and listening back now it has aged well. The sounds are fresh, the grooves otherworldly and the bass and drum work very much in the signature bump and grind style championed by Jones. Well worth picking up, this.

Review: Agents of Time marks Mathew Jonson's debut solo album nearly a decade after his debut EP, New Identity, on the Itswhatitis imprint, and sees the Canadian present a consummate mixture of abstract downtempoisms and all consuming excursions into melodic techno. Album opener "Love In The Future" is a stuttering swoop through crystalline and lushly orchestrated electronica which descends into an ever decreasing synth wash before emerging on the other side via the punchy melodic techno of "Girls Can Dance". A sombre mood permeates throughout, a reflective synth melody central to the slow pace of "Night Vision" and "Pirates In The 9th" characterised by a sinister bass line floating underneath gentle IDM clicks and cuts. A rare digression from the sedateness is provided by the Hi NRG thump of "Sunday Morning Disco" and shares billing of album highlight with an alternate take on Jonson's 2005 masterpiece "Marionette".

Review: Now Juju & Jordash is on hold thanks to the former becoming a parent, Jordan Czamanski AKA Jordan GCZ has a lot of time on his hands - hence this genuinely brilliant, long-awaited debut studio album. Built out of edited and reworked improvised studio jams - many made during the pandemic - My Brain's Brain is a pleasingly trippy, hard-to-pigeonhole affair that sees the Amsterdam-based performer and producer mix and match elements of ambient, dystopian electronic jazz, electro, techno, IDM, intergalactic deep house and hypnotic haziness into far-sighted, off-beat sonic shapes. There are naturally dancefloor moments, but it's much more than that: an unusual, off-kilter and psychedelic electronic opus that frequently swings between trippy oddness and immersive, meditative beauty.
