Review: The story goes with this one that a collective of seasoned musicians came together and discovered a rare camaraderie. With no hesitation, they poured their everything out onto tape and the results are now presented here on this one-sided and etched 12" under the title Better Lovers. Out features former Every Time I Die members Jordan Buckley on guitar, Steve Micciche on bass, and Clayton "Goose" Holyoak on drums with frontman Greg Puciato on vocals and Grammy-winning producer Will Putney. The music is dense metal with walls of sound washing over you and full of big guitar riffs, guttural vocals and dark energy.

Subterranean Aeon (6:09)
Review: "Murky Tech Death" was how one critic thought best to describe Blood Incantation. It's not hard to hear what they meant on this 2015 EP from the death metal outfit. It's riff-y but in a mathematical and angular kind of way, with nods to futurism also evident in the lyrical themes that look skywards, beyond the stratosphere, and into the great unknown which humankind still can barely reach due to the limitations of our own technological forward march.

There are moments here so complex the art of listening itself becomes something of an exact science - the lead guitar crescendos of 'Obfuscating The Linear Threshold' for example. Or the rhythmic propulsion of 'Hovering Lifeless'. The result is a masterclass of heavy, doom-y noise that packs musicality and drama into all four tracks.

Review: Marking their first LP to not be named after a colour, Savannah, Georgia based sludge-prog metal collective Baroness make their illustrious return on Stone; a darker and more introspective opus of heaving heft and unsettling atmospherics. Leave no doubt though, this is still the band fans have come to know and adore with their reliable brand of fuzzed out psychedelic guitar solos, crushing riffs and catchy hooks. Just one spin of lead single 'Last Word' should be more than enough to dispel any concerns whilst signalling a gloriously grim and captivating new era for the group.

Review: The latest full-length from Savannah, Georgia based sludge-prog metal collective Baroness marks their first LP to not be named after a colour, settling on the succinct yet poignant title of Stone; reflecting the project's darker and introspective sonic exploration of heaving heft and unsettling atmospherics. This is still the band fans have come to praise and heap adoration upon due to their reliable brand of fuzzed out psychedelic guitar solos, crushing riffs and catchy hooks, yet showcasing a more macabre, menacing bent this time around. Give one spin of lead single 'Last Word' and any and all concerns should immediately dissipate once experiencing the first signal sound of a gloriously grim and captivating new era for the group.

Review: Birmingham death metal legends Benediction were originally founded in 1989 by Barney Greenway (vocals), Darren Brookes (guitar), Peter Rew (guitar), Paul Adams (bass) and Ian Treacy (drums). They would quickly record and release their The Dreams You Dread demo, which would go on to become a cult classic within the scene. The impressive standard of the material saw them quickly sign to Nuclear Blast, and subsequently release their debut LP Subconscious Terror in 1990. A pummeling assault of speed-indebted, thrash-turned-death metallics, while also serving as their only album with original vocalist Barney Greenway before his departure to focus primarily on his other project Napalm Death (who he still fronts to this day), this is a vital piece of UK death metal history that was in sore need of yet another reissue.

Review: Released in 1991, The Grand Leveller would serve as the sophomore full-length from Birmingham death metal legends Benediction, whilst ushering in the arrival of vocalist Dave Ingram following the departure of Barney Greenway (who would leave to solely focus on the still very active Napalm Death). Featuring a much more refined and focused brutal sonic assault than their preceding 1990 debut Subconscious Terror, the album is perceived by many to mark the true arrival of the Benediction we all still hold in such high regard to this day, while Ingram would eventually go on to takeover vocal duties for the even more renowned UK extreme metal titans Bolt Thrower.

Review: Biohazard's third album was when the Brooklyn hardcore rockers hit the big time, signing to Roadrunner and scoring a massive smash in 'Punishment'. The album acted as a springboard to a very quick signing with Warner Bros, but this album captures the band at their raw best before major label influences came to bear on their sound. With their prescient embrace of rap within a metal context, they were ahead of the game (just check 'Shades Of Grey') and they exuded the archetypical New York swagger in everything they did. 30 years on, Urban Discipline still sounds incredible, and it's pressed up here on double vinyl with a gatefold sleeve for the die-hards and new recruits alike.

Review: Caputing the band in live action during the early 80s, Black Sabbath's Born In Hell is culled from the short tenure of former Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan as lead vocalist, after the departiure of Ozzy Osbourne's replacemennt Ronnie James Dio. Therefore, among the run through the Brum band's overwhelmingly legendary back catalogue there nestles a very Sabbath take on 'Smoke On The Water'. Of course, the biggest selling-point here is simply Sabbath doing Sabbath, very loudly, although not quite as loud as the crowd's reaction at various points of the show. Not least Tony Iommi's insane solo as 'War Pigs' refuels in preparation for its monumental climax, worth the price of admission alone.

Review: 1975's Black Sabbath album, Sabotage, was written at a time when the band were caught up in an ongoing legal battle with their former manager. That is what gave the album its title and no doubt fuelled some of the more abrasive and angry tracks. The newly remastered reissue is now paired with a complete live show that was recorded during the band's 1975 tour. Of the 16 tracks, 13 have never before been released. As well as a special new booklet with further fan delights, two extra tracks feature on a bonus 7" with artwork that replicates a rare Japanese version of the single.

Review: RECOMMENDED
How can heavy metal-ers not get excited about this one? While sporting a pretty serious price tag, this Super Deluxe edition of Black Sabbath's seminal fourth album is certainly one for the collectors, who will delight in the 11 additional studio recordings featured in the huge amount of bonus material here, which include snippets of studio dialogue, false starts and more rough around the edges nuances that bring the work to life.

As for the LP itself, it was something of a landmark moment in the band's journey - shifting the intensity and ferocity up at least three gears and then sticking a brick on the throttle to hold it in place. Perhaps Mojo's take on things puts it best; ""If booze and dope had helped fuel Sabbath's earlier albums, Vol. 4 is their cocaine ... Despite their spiraling addictions, musically Vol. 4 is another ambitious outing". Enough said.

Review: Capturing the era of Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio on vocals following Ozzy Osborne's departure, Live Evil was the first officially sanctioned live album from Birmingham's foremost heavy metal pioneers. The album came together in 1982, drawing on shows from Seattle, San Antonio and Dallas on the Mob Rules tour, and now it has been given the deluxe reissue treatment. As well as the original mix of the album, there's an entirely new mix of the album from the original analogue master tapes by long time band associate Wyn Daivs, complete with a 40-page hardback book featuring new liner notes and replicas of the original concert book and poster form the Mob Rules tour.

Focused on those breakthrough years with Ozzy Osborne, there are just too many classic tracks to count on here, whether it's the harmonica baiting sludge of 'The Wizard' or the motorik drive of 'Paranoid' you're after. A perfect primer for newcomers, or a handy capsule of all the best bits - it's Black Sabbath, need we say more?

These performances were captured for the now iconic, aptly titled live album Reunion. Marking the first official release with the original line up since 1978's Never Say Die! and garnering the band their first ever Grammy Award in 2000 for the live rendition of 'Iron Man' taken from this collection, the work is a flawless compilation of greatest hits and fan favourite deep cuts, performed with a veteran's vigor.

Originally part of a double CD set, this live album finally receives its own personal vinyl home, and offers a time capsule fly on the wall earful of the fathers of psych, doom, sludge (etc.) at the height of their drug-fueled, incomparable, sonic world domination.

Providing picture disc represses of all eight LPs released during the original frontman's tenure from 1970 to 1978 (2013's reunion album 13 is not included), the collection boasts the self-titled 1970 debut, the same-year follow up Paranoid, as well as the iconic slew of Master Of Reality (1971), Vol 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975), Technical Ecstasy (1976) and Never Say Die! Review: Who'd have thought, some 54 or so years ago, that the Birmingham four piece called Black Sabbath would not only go on to enjoy success long into the next millennium but also create a style of music - heavy metal - that would spread globally and become one of culture's most dominant forces for decades to come. That's what happened though, and the strength of the material captured for radio broadcast at the iconic Olympia Theatre in Paris on December 20 1970 is a big clue, at least with the benefit of hindsight. As well as their genre-defining eponymous debut, the band dropped the Paranoid album this year too, showing not only how inspired but also prolific they were at the time, and naturally that anthemic song is present here, alongside colossal tunes like 'Iron Man', 'War Pigs' and 'Black Sabbath'. They sound uttterly unstoppable here, and, certainly for a fair few years to follow anyway, that's what they proved to be.

Review: Hailing from the Adirondack Mountains in New York, Blackbraid is the one-man black project of Jon Krieger, also known by his pseudonym Sgah'gahsowah (Mohawk name meaning "The Witch Hawk"). Following on from his exceptional 2022 debut full-length, Blackbraid II furthers Krieger's sonic marrying of esoteric blackened chaos with elements of traditional indigenous music, including the use of Native American flutes and pan instruments. With lyrics touching on racism, genocide and displacement; Krieger attempts to relinquish the far-right neo-Nazi rhetoric surrounding the black metal genre by imbuing it with earnest, despair-driven, authentic history. Imagine if a black metal band provided the score to Martin Scorsese's Killers Of The Flower Moon, and Blackbraid is precisely what you'd get.

Review: There's arguably few modern bands pushing and expanding the confines of death metal like Denver, Colorado based genre provocateurs, Blood Incantation.

Combining intricate tech-death stylings with psychedelic, prog-rock passages all awash in sci-fi hues led to 2019's 'Hidden History of the Human Race', landing on several end of year lists.

The much anticipated follow up, 'Timewave Zero', is a purposeful 180 from their formula, eschewing vocals, riffs and malevolence for ambient, synth-based science fiction psychedelia akin to latter day Tangerine Dream.

It may seem a perplexing departure, but one the group have envisioned since prior to releasing their 'Starspawn' debut in 2016. Continuing to carve out their own path, and craft a solely unique vision may lose some riff-raff semi-fans, but those willing to follow Blood Incantation on their ever unfolding cosmic journey, have just been handed the keys to the unknown.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing on corners of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent working condition***

Bloodywood are nothing short of a heavy metal sensation, coming blasting out of New Dehli and amassing their following at an exponential rate. Their debut album Rakshak is already hitting charts worldwide, bucking trends by introducing the idea of an Indian metal band to a world in need of some serious variety. Artfully folding elements of their cultural backdrop into the music while delivering a blistering, punchy strain of rap metal, it's not hard to see why they're on such a fierce run of success. With singles like 'Jee Veerey', 'Dana Dan' and 'Gadaar' tackling issues from corruption to sexual predators, they've got heart and social conscience to match the sheer power of their songwriting and production. Buckle up for the ride as a vital new force in metal rises.

Review: Rhode Island based metallic experimentalist duo The Body have become renowned, not just for their own unique brand of heaving, caustic, dread-laden doomgazing, but for their dynamic slew of collaborative projects which has seen them work with the likes of deathgrind extremists Full Of Hell, sludge metal bastions Thou and noisecore industrialists Uniform, to name but a few. Orchards Of A Futile Heaven is the latest work to join this ever-expansive list of collaborations, seeing the pair link up with Berlin based DJ and experimental producer Dis Fig (aka DJ Felicia Chen) in an effort "to find new avenues to make heavy music that looked beyond tropes of metal and electronic music by merging the two". The resulting maelstrom offers a cacophonous swarm of distorted, screeching electronics and ethereal, menacing vocals submerged beneath layers of haunting, nocturnal, sonic malevolence. Perfect for all the family.

Review: Madison, Wisconsin based stoner/sludge metal legends Bongzilla make the gnarliest, heftiest, ugliest weed-inspired cacophony possible, while their avid legions of dank smelling followers are often the closest they can get to stern when highlighting how the band's live experience is the truest means of hitting the bong properly. Dabbing (LIVE) Rosin in Europe brings the live bong experience right to your ear canals with a collection of cuts taken from performances at Paradise Island, Minoga in Poznan, Poland, and Voodoo in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which were all hits on the band's Dabbing Across Europe & UK Spring-Summer 2023 Tour.

Review: The first of three albums from the Japanese post-everything auteurs titled Heavy Rocks, arrived in 2002 with the second and third installments coming in 2011 and 2022, respectively. These volumes served to allow the group to fully explore their heaviest tendencies with full abandon, and none are as adored or praised (or essential to own on vinyl) than the minimal orange adorned first entry. Plumbing the depths of psychedelic stoner rock, heaving sludge and cavernous doom metal, all whilst retaining accessible grooves and absurdly catchy riffage, this is Boris at their most abrasive, face-melting and imposing, while also serving as a solid entry point into their beastly 20+ album discography.

Review: The first instalment of the three-album cycle from Japanese post-everything auteurs Boris, titled Heavy Rocks, originally landed in 2002 with the second and third volumes arriving in 2011 and 2022, respectively. These projects offered the subversive trio a chance to fully explore and expand their heftiest tendencies with total sonic abandon, with none being more adored or praised (or vital to collect on vinyl) than the minimal orange adorned first entry. Plumbing the depths of psych stoner-doom with forays into heaving sludge metal, all whilst retaining catchy grooves and absurd riffage, this is Boris at their most abrasive, face-melting and imposing, while also serving as a solid entry point into their beastly 20+ album discography. Review: Originally conceived in 2019 during a tour with industrial hardcore purveyors Uniform, Japanese psychedelic noise-rock juggernauts Boris would invite their co-conspirators on stage to reimagine the trio's classic "Akuma no Uta" as part of their encore, with the resulting chemistry inspiring both acts to begin crafting a fully collaborative album. Many years of exchanging ideas from one home studio base to another has finally bore fruit in the form of the hideous yet glorious Bright New Disease. Combining almost every nuance of each group's genre-less machinations, the project swells and extends in every sonic direction from harsh walls of screeching noise to retrofitted Japanese D-beat hardcore, with time in between for aquatic, shoegazing serenity and mechanized industrial venom.

Review: Mathcore pioneers, Botch, signed to acclaimed label Sargent House (home to Deafheaven and The Armed), earlier this year with the driven home fact that it was solely with the intention of reissuing their short yet seminal discography. It turned out to be utter lies as the band have since performed a recent secret reunion show, and unveiled the blistering return single, 'One Twenty Two'. The reissue of their magnum opus,' We Are The Romans', has been a criminally overdue process, with the frenetic project heralded as a genre cornerstone as well as a primary influence on names such as Converge and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Complex, aggressive, and caustic in oppressive measures, this is an essential for any fans of hardcore, metal or the most abrasive forms of the ugly nexus where the two intersect and clash.

Review: Welsh hard rock band Budgie never quite reached the highs of some of their peers by still did plenty for the evolution of their own particular musical niche. The were often said to be a blend of Rush's progressive styles and the more direct and dark heaviness of Black Sabbath. At the heart of the band was Burke Shelley's vocals - famous for their high-pitched banshee style - and despite being commercially unheralded, they have been mentioned as an influence by the likes of Iron Maiden, Van Halen and Queens of the Stone Age. This live show from LA in the late 70s catches them in electrifying form.

Review: 2006's Altar served as the long awaited musical meeting of minds between Japanese experimental psychedelic noise-rock trio Boris and Seattle robe-adorning drone metal behemoths Sunn O))). With an impressive collective of integral contributors such as Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Joe Preston (Earth, Melvins, High On Fire), Phil Wandscher and Jesse Sykes, the project has gone on to become a grandiose display of oppressive, punishing, experimentalist metallic drone, crossing not only borders but oceans. This severely overdue 2xLP reissue comes courtesy of the incomparable Southern Lord, offering both the devout and newcomers alike a chance to finally experience this opus in its undiluted purity (and without having to indulge vinyl flippers).
