Review: One of the key releases of the first wave of the New Wave of British heavy metal, the self-titled Angel Witch debut full-length, has long been heralded, praised, analysed and remembered as a vital contribution to the world of metallic machinations since its initial 1980 release. Inspiring waves of black metal, thrash, death and almost any other form of sonic extremity one can lay their ears upon, the work was misunderstood by many not prepared for the monumental surge in popularity the metal scene would ride over the ensuing decades. That being said, the project had those who would fight its corner, with its credence eventually leading to the same regard as say, Iron Maiden's self-titled affair, yet channelling far darker avenues of influence. Chalk most of the genre's expansion throughout the 80s, and you'll always circle back to this monumental classic.

Review: The third full-length from Canada's greatest thrash metal act, Annihilator, was met with initial puzzlement upon its release in 1993. 'Set The World On Fire' saw the band straw away from the more metallic route of albums such as 'Alice In Hell', in favour of a more radio-friendly approach. Time working its nostalgic magic has led to cuts like, 'Knight Jumps Queen', and, 'Brain Dance', becoming live staples since, while many have grown to appreciate the expansive and accessible scope the project exuded. The final full-length to feature bassist Wayne Darley, as well as their final work with renowned metal label Roadrunner, this reissue comes at a retrospective time where artists can cherish their once misunderstood works, and offer them up to new legions of eager, less judgemental fans.

Review: British rock band Atomic Rooster - made up from members of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown aka organ player Vincent Crane and sticks man Carl Palmer - had success in the 70s and 80s. They went through some mad stylistic changes in that time but remain best known for their hit singles 'Tomorrow Night' which hit number 11 in the UK charts and number four gem 'Devil's Answer', which both came in 1971. Neither of them feature on their self-titled album and debut from 1970 which itself made the Top 50 of the UK album charts, but it still packs a real punch with a prog rock feel.

Review: Recorded in Florida's iconic Morrisound Studios, the second full-length from progressive power metal titans, Crimson Glory, is often heralded as, not only the band's finest accomplishment, but a high watermark for the scene overall. Cosmic and ambitious, the original 1988 release was inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe as well as exuding a central focus on mysticism and divinity, with a Kabbalistic Tree of Life even adorning the back cover. Noted for its unique recording technique, in which drummer Dana Burnell performed live drums into a synclavier without any cymbals, before re-recording the cymbal takes later in order to maintain a complete dichotomy between the two; the crispness of the impressive percussion may have served as a complicated, arduous process, but its pristine attention to detail still shines through over three decades on.

Review: English heavy-metal band Diamond Head was formed in Stourbridge by guitarist Brian Tatler and drummer Duncan Scott in 1976. Part of the new wave of British heavy metal, even the most famous bands in the category - Metallica, Megadeth, etc. - acknowledge Diamond Head as among the few pioneers to popularise the sound after a long nascence, not to mention their creditors. On Borrowed Time, one can hear that Diamond Head are still informed by ballad rock, highlighting the mid-heyday developments of the sound in the 1970s. Now reissued by Music On Vinyl, this edition is faithful to later versions, adding their signature song 'Am I Evil?' into the mix; the cherry on top to an already amazing, formative heavy metal album.

Review: British heavy metal outfit Fastway was of course put together in 1982 by 'Fast' Eddie Clarke. He is best known for his work as a guitarist with Motorhead but this band's debut album - originally released in 1983 - was also a hit with fans old and new. Its biggest moments are the singles 'We Become One' and 'Easy Livin', but the title track - which oddly was never actually put out as an official single, managed to become the band's most successful hit. This 40th-anniversary version is one of 1000 individually numbered copies on red vinyl.

Review: Swiss hard rock and heavy metal band Krokus are one of the outfits with a cult following who worship their every move. As such this Best Of might not be for them but instead serves as a great overview for newly curious fans. Stayed Awake All Night / The Best Of Krokus compiles their greatest hits and most lively rock riffs from tunes they made between 1982 and 1986 and it originally came in 1989. It shows them to be a band who know how to write a hook and thrash out a rhythm and sits them up there alongside the likes of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.

Review: Ministry have always enjoyed playing with album titles - 1989's The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste being one of the best examples. They've also evolved from a synth pop outfit at the turn of that decade into one of the pre-eminent industrial rock and metal bands of the following ten years, a process that helps them stand out among a scene that became increasingly saturated as time progressed.

Never by-numbers, then, and always looking to experiment with effects, samples, and structure, on stage their reputation for being uncompromisingly Ministry precedes them, and here's at least some form of proof. Sphinctour (lol) is an 11 track album containing recordings from various live shows across the globe, each of which invokes the atmosphere and gargantuan power of the outfit in question, with the only real problem being the fact you probably weren't there to see these shows happen.

Review: Barnsley heavy metal legends Saxon originally released their 11th studio album Forever Free in 1992, though it would be quickly reissued in the UK with an alternate Warhammer 40,000 inspired cover including a biker Space Marine. Reissued by Demon over a decade ago on CD, a vinyl repress is long since overdue and now the beautiful people over at Music On Vinyl have opted to re-distribute the underrated seasoned gem on translucent blue vinyl with the 180 gram numbered audiophile treatment. Reliably mammoth riffs and soaring hooks abound, though the project is most noted for featuring an eclectic reimagining of Willie Dixon's blues classic 'Just Wanna Make Love to You', popularised by the incomparable Muddy Waters.

Review: The debut full-length from epic doom metal daddies, Solitude Aeturnus, was originally released in 1991 via Roadrunner, with the project marking a visionary fine-tuning of the doom genre, whilst crafting a minimally altered blueprint for a plethora of acts to study in the ensuing decades. Featuring frontman Robert Lowe in his prime, before his later, equally important work in Candlemass, this debut came at a time when the label's roster was a dynamic melting pot of diverse output that only in recent years has regained its expansive edge. With ideal timing, there's never been a more prime opportunity to rediscover such a criminally overlooked genre staple.

Review: Hailing from Anchorage, Alaska, 36 Crazyfists have long since smashed the through the barriers of metalcore, post-hardcore and alternative metal to achieve a renowned status for fans of the vast majority of chaotic carnage, in almost a Venn Diagram style intersection. Following on from 1997's self-released demo album In The Skin, the band would sign to Roadrunner Records for their major label debut Bitterness The Star in 2002; a project frontman Brock Lindow continues to consider his personal favourite. Over two decades on from initial release, the beautiful people over at Music On Vinyl are offering a long awaited reissue of this seminal beast on a lush 180 gram audiophile translucent blue vinyl LP, with each copy individually numbered for that additional collector's high.

Review: The debut full-length from Los Angeles glam metal superstars, Warrant, is the perfect time capsule of late eighties sunset strip era rock of a bygone leather-chapped age. 'Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich', boasted the hit singles, 'Heaven', 'Down Boys', and, 'Sometimes She Cries'; all still heralded as some of the group's most essential cuts to date. Noted for its pushed back release due to vocalist Jani Lane suffering a nervous breakdown upon catching his best friend and girlfriend "entangled", an encounter detailed in lyrical form on the band's single, 'I Saw Red', which would feature on the following year's sophomore effort, 'Cherry Pie'; there's still no ignoring or denying the infectious cheese, stadium-sized riffs and endlessly catchy hooks that still prop up this debut as a (not so) timeless classic of its stature.

Review: Los Angeles glam metal superstars, Warrant, had their biggest success with this Cherry Pie album. It's the band's second full-length and it contains two of their biggest top 40 charting singles. Both the title track and the cheeky anthem, 'I Saw Red', catapulted their name into the 80s-turned-90s rock stratosphere, while the somewhat infantile humour, braggadocios attitude, and hidden intrigue of deeper cuts such as, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', would signal the more abstract lyricism and clever song-writing tropes that would be more fleshed out and fully realised by the time 1992's seminal, 'Dog Eat Dog', arrived. This reissue comes on nice heavyweight vinyl.

Review: Huge guitar solos, a not-so-subtle hint of seduction and romance, rousing choruses and an attitude that screams: "I'm gonna make that heavy metal hand signal every five or six minutes." Warrant may not be the first name on everyone's lips when it comes to the heyday big room, sexually charged glam metal, but when all is said and done they did pretty well during their seven years in the game.
Emerging from the Los Angeles scene of the mid-late-1980s, a city that has a lot to answer for in these musical ends, by the time they packed up their Fenders and called time more than 10million albums had been sold, with the double-platinum Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich the real gem of the lot. Dog Eat Dog came along a little later, in 1992, and by this point the group had really got into gear. Don't expect the same tangible hunger and impact as the inaugural effort, then, but in many ways this is far more complete example of what they were gunning for.

Review: The second full-length from New Jersey thrash metal outfit Whiplash arrived courtesy of Roadrunner in 1987, a mere year after their breakneck paced debut 'Power & Pain'. At this point in the late 80s the scene already had genre classics such as Metallica's 'Master Of Puppets' and Slayer's 'Reign In Blood' to contend with, making it a free for all of pummeling thrash acts doing their utmost to not get lost in the ether. While some often cite 1989's 'Insult To Injury' as the total showcasing of their prowess, Ticket To Mayhem is testament (no pun intended) to the myriad of vital bands that kept the thrash movement pulsing beneath the major heights and laurels of a select few, with Whiplash finally receiving the praise and credence they had initially earned so many decades prior.

Review: The highly anticipated eighth full-length from Dutch symphonic metal legends Within Temptation comes four arduous years since the release of 2019's overlooked Resist. Hindered by global lockdown due to the COVID pandemic putting up barriers and blocks in the midst of the prolific collective's recording process, singles have been slowly drip-fed to the masses over the past few years with anthemic closer 'Entertain You' first being unveiled all the way back in the summer of 2020. In fact, more than half of the album's tracklist has already been released as several cuts were originally intended to serve as standalone singles, but purists can finally breathe a sigh of relief and rejoice at locking down the entire collection in its purest form with the official release of the somewhat aptly titled Bleed Out.

Review: The third full-length from one of the UK's "big four" thrash metal acts, Xentrix, was quite the controversial project upon its initial release in 1992. Leaning into a more progressive metal influence saw the band abandon some of their metallic potency in search of more texture and artistry. They've since gone on to refer to the work as the biggest mistake of their career, while it also led to the departure of vocalist/guitarist, Chris Astley, until his 2006 return after the band reformed. Like most albums steeped in artistic self-deprecation and early fan backlash, 'Kin', has gone on to find its audience, with expectation and anticipation now removed from the conversation, the group's attempt to strive for material beyond their integral make up is as refreshing as it is forward thinking for an early nineties thrash record.
