Review: There are bands that can just about get away with releasing archive compilations, and there are bands like Mastodon, who almost need to. The heavy metal-ists rose to underground popularity at the turn of the millennium, and by all accounts have never really emerged from those depths. Their output has been prolific and consistent, but never really anything close to commercial. The result being a ton of tracks many people have missed.

Medium Rarities goes some way to righting that wrong. 16 live recordings, overlooked studio work, covers and instrumentals that paint a vivid picture of just how expansive and varied their back catalogue is. From 'Fallen Torches', this year's riff-heavy single and this album's only original track, through innovative curveball takes on 'A Spoonful Weighs A Ton' and 'A Commotion' (originally by The Flaming Lips and Feist, respectively), onto the deranged lunacy of 'Atlanta', a collaboration with Butthole Surfers' Gibby Haynes, it bellows in all the right places.

Review: Twenty-five years on from the Black Album conquering the globe, what can these gods of Metal do to justify their position on Mount Olympus? We've all heard umpteen reports of the lads getting back to their roots and rediscovering their mojo, yet this time even the most jaded and cynical old thrash metal stagers have been forced to admit that the band are on fire - deploying savage riffage and finely honed songcraft with ruthless efficiency, yet more importantly sounding like they're having a blast doing it, the double-platter both connects with the spirit forged in a garage decades ago yet blasts that template to the stars and back.

Review: Music On Vinyl's Ministry reissue series continues via this heavyweight re-press of "The Land Of Rape And Honey" on orange and gold vinyl. On its initial release in 1988, the album was seen as something of a departure from the Al Jourgensen-helmed band's previous output, primarily because it mixed their previous EBM, industrial and experimental synth-pop influences with heavier guitar riffs, more stomping beats and the kind of growled vocals more prevalent in heavy metal. Listening back 31 years on, the album has lost none of its luster, with highlights including the low-slung dub-rock chug of "Golden Dawn", the ricocheting drums and dystopian screams of "Destruction", the EBM-rock throb of "You Know What You Are" and the 400 Blows style electro-dub funkiness of "Abortive".

The Last Eidolon
Cat: PFL 243. Rel: 09 May 20
  1. Loremaster
  2. Shadow Over Thy Kingdom
  3. The Fallen One
Review: It's not hard to start picturing the kind of world Old Tower belongs to. Everything from the track titles to the sense of wonder and awe invoked through the use of choir voice lines forges a Middle Earth kind of vibe, making for a real adventure into vivid sonic territories that lie somewhere between ambient, drone and doom synth folk. It's not for the faint-hearted, basically. In many ways the sense of size is most pervading - tracks here sound as though they were recorded in a monastery, or ancient catacomb. 'Loremaster' arguably offering the strongest case in point, with its dramatic organs and pounding ritualistic drums. Matched with the spiritual grandeur of 'Shadow Over Thy Kingdom' and the sense of desolation and unease running through 'The Fallen One', it all makes for quite the trip.

Review: Static X should be considered a metal institution, not simply a band. Rising to prominence in 1993, when the industrial edges of debut album Wisconsin Death Trip attracted attention from then-burgeoning nu metal heads, they retained relatively consistent output for almost 20 years after that, during which time the line-up went through several iterations before disbanding a year before founder Wayne Static's death, in 2014.

Project Regeneration Volume 1 is a mighty return for this hammer-blow outfit, then, and given the evolutionary nature of their story so far it's a next chapter. And a step in some different directions. Of course there are still ferocious riffs and snarled vocals by the ravage load, but the synthy and electronic nuances that have long been audible are brought to centre stage here, not least on the death techno of 'My Destruction', and the psy-trance loops of opener 'Regeneration'.

Review: For a band that have - over the course of their five studio albums - always been known for a level of complexity, Tool's most eagerly awaited record yet, taking no less than 13 years to materialise, is staggering in its depth. Worth the wait, and then some, those looking for wherever progressive rock genius has been hiding can consider the search over. We've found it. There's just so much happening here. "Pneuma" may be the trophy piece, its beautiful chords spiralling into sinister refrains and choruses. "Descending" grows its way from ambient opening to powerhouse guitars. "Chocolate Chip Trip", something of a curveball, introduces noodling improv-sounding sections to the melting pot. An epic in all ways of looking at things, although one that's remarkably easy to consume, "Fear Inoculum" marks the reawakening of giants with a score that will make anyone walk proud.
