Review: The story goes with this one that a collective of seasoned musicians came together and discovered a rare camaraderie. With no hesitation, they poured their everything out onto tape and the results are now presented here on this one-sided and etched 12" under the title Better Lovers. Out features former Every Time I Die members Jordan Buckley on guitar, Steve Micciche on bass, and Clayton "Goose" Holyoak on drums with frontman Greg Puciato on vocals and Grammy-winning producer Will Putney. The music is dense metal with walls of sound washing over you and full of big guitar riffs, guttural vocals and dark energy.

Subterranean Aeon (6:09)
Review: "Murky Tech Death" was how one critic thought best to describe Blood Incantation. It's not hard to hear what they meant on this 2015 EP from the death metal outfit. It's riff-y but in a mathematical and angular kind of way, with nods to futurism also evident in the lyrical themes that look skywards, beyond the stratosphere, and into the great unknown which humankind still can barely reach due to the limitations of our own technological forward march.

There are moments here so complex the art of listening itself becomes something of an exact science - the lead guitar crescendos of 'Obfuscating The Linear Threshold' for example. Or the rhythmic propulsion of 'Hovering Lifeless'. The result is a masterclass of heavy, doom-y noise that packs musicality and drama into all four tracks.

Review: In the transitional period after their complex, chaotic debut, 'Calculating Infinity', departure of founding vocalist Dmitiri Minikakis, and before the arrival of hyper terrifying frontman Greg Puciato, mathcore legends Dillinger Escape Plan were at a loss.

Still not content on a suitable permanent vocal replacement yet refusing to simply sit on their hands in the interim, the 'Irony Is A Dead Scene' EP served as a creative outlet turned fan favourite and cult classic, thanks in no small part to the enlisting of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Dead Cross (etc.) vocalist/absurdist extraordinaire Mike Patton.

The weirdness and sickly, sexy snarl Patton imbued into the dizzying arrangements and audible assault would leave a lasting impact on the Dillinger trajectory from then on, with a much more tempered focus on industrial, groove and ambient nuances, while cuts would never stray too far from live sets.

The fact that at their three New York farewell shows, the band even performed the EP in its entirety with Patton joining them on stage, speaks volumes to the credence, regard and influence these four tracks would have on the remainder of their career for decades to come.

Also, while 'When Good Dogs Do Bad Things' may be the centrepiece, the cover of Aphex Twin's 'Come To Daddy' needs to be heard to be believed, even just to hear founding drummer Chris Penney figure out that percussion on a live kit.

A four-track EP, yes, but also one of the most intrinsic pieces of the Dillinger catalogue.

Review: Phantomimea arrives through Loma Vista Recordings and is a brilliant new five-track cover EP from Ghost. Each and every tune is epic in its own way with material by Television, Genesis, The Stranglers, Iron Maiden and Tina Turner all chewed up and sat out in their own inimitable way. Though some of these sources are rather unlikely given Ghost's style they are all reworked with great respect. Ghost is in a great run of form having just won Best Rock Album of the Year at the iHeart Radio Music Awards, which itself came off last year's international chart-topping success Impera.

Review: This latest single by anonymous, masked metal supergroup Ghost hears the band lay down a haunting, straight-up hard rock clanger, in support of the upcoming 2021 slasher film 'Halloween Kills'. 'Hunter's Moon' stops and starts between choral sections erratically, as though the musicians have synchronously taken the same brand of nightmare pill. "I'm dying to see you once agian" is the refrain, carefully double-entendring into deathly, mathy elysium. On the back, John Carpenter's new 'Halloween Kills' theme, a rerun of the '78 classic. It's just as fitting that both songs should be released on limited 7" clear, alabaster vinyl - the colour of blood-drained skin, or brittle ghost's bones.

Review: Portals is a significant release for a few reasons. Firstly, it's not only the first debut solo release from Metallica guitar-slinger Kirk Hammett, but also by any member of the band. Secondly, it's a surprisingly cinematic affair, with Hammett's trademark riffs, solos and motifs coming accompanied by string quartets and soaring orchestration. Thirdly - and arguably most importantly - it's very good. An exploration of instrumental heavy rock fused with the grand ideas and grandiose movements of John Barry, John Williams and Ennio Morricone style movie soundtracks (not to mention one or two nods to John Carpenter's self-produced themes), the four tracks that make up the mini-album are immersive, entertaining and arguably far more adventurous than anything Metallica has made in recent times.

17 albums in and it feels like Napalm Death are only just hitting their stride. Well, they've been hitting their stride for roughly 17 albums, but while many bands - especially those at the more frenetic and uncompromising end of things - tend to start, err, compromising after four or five long forms, the Birmingham grindcore masters still sound fresh. Albeit fresh but covered in sweat and rage.

Following on from 2020's Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism, Resentment is a mini-LP that picks up where its predecessor left off. Among the highlights is a fantastic cover of 1980s industrial electronic outfit Slab!, but really it's nigh-on-impossible to pick specifics here - buckle up, turn it up, and let the ferocity wash over you. Suffice to say, keeping this level of intensity without winding up sounding like you're screaming into the abyss isn't easy, and Napalm Death's career should be considered a masterclass.

Review: Weighty new thrash record from Sodom, transcending the boundaries of squeal for a biting and demonic new sound. This is the 12" we needed, following a digipak version and last year's full-length Genesis XIX. This three-track EP includes an exclusive re-recording of the title track and live staple 'Bombenhagel'; translating from German to mean "hail of bombs", it tuly does sound like just that, dealing lyrically with the horrors of Nazi bombing raids during World War II.

Review: Portland, Oregon death-metal bruisers, Witch Vomit, excel at violent, blistering, unpretentious ferocity, and it's delivered in corpse-digging spades on their abrasive new EP, 'Abhorrent Rapture.' Released last year as follow up to 2019's ludicrously heavy and beautifully titled, 'Buried Deep in a Bottomless Grave', these four tracks have finally made their way to immortalised wax, while the material on here is far more concerned with matters of the mortal, dying and decaying, as evidenced by choice cuts such as 'Funeral Purgation' and 'Necrometamorphosis.' Where there are places for the scene to experiment and expand, it's always vital to have morbid sonic assaulters like Witch Vomit at the other end of the spectrum to offer brutal balance.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Swiss-US musician Manuel Gagneux returns with a new six track EP under the Zeal And Ardor flag, a contemporary metal band that have rightly been lauded for originality in songcraft and expressive lyricism, focusing their rage at racial justice, inherent fascism within capitalism systems and the ongoing persecution and abuse of non-whites across America and beyond.

Written in response to the events of summer 2020, at which point George Floyd's death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, and the ensuing Black Lives Matter protests, were set to the backdrop of a pressure cooker global pandemic. As you would expect, this outpouring of feelings is intense and tangible, a record of enormous power and purpose, not to mention a particularly compelling example of Afro-black metal. A release that needed to be released, for more reasons than one.

Review: The Acacia Strain's third album The Dead Walk was a 2006 release on Prosthetic Records. It was produced with Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage and featured regular band members including Vincent Bennett on lead vocals next to DL Laskiewicz on lead guitar, Christopher Daniele on rhythm guitar, Seth Coleman on bass guitar. It's a hardcore mix of death metal and rock with sledgehammer drums, brutal lyrics often rooted in misanthropy. The band has put out albums since but this is regarded as one of their high-water marks, for good reason.

Review: The second full-length from Los Angeles crust-punk/powerviolence mob ACxDC (Antichrist Demoncore) arrived in 2020, six years after their venomous self-titled debut made good on the promise of over a decade's worth of demos, EPs and splits. Satan Is King (a nod to Kanye West's 'Jesus Is King' released the year prior) is another caustic batch of pummelling d-beat punk funnelled through a rusted scuzzy decanter of hardcore fury and satanic worship, featuring feel good hits of the summer such as 'Copsucker'. In all seriousness, if you find your current hardcore lacking in the blasphemy department or just a tad too sanitised, then look no further than this crushing collection of audible violence from true cavern crawlers of the underground.

Three decades later their seminal sophomore effort, Dirt sounds as good as it ever did and gets an anniversary reissue to mark the occasion. It comes with plenty of powerful drums and big-ass basslines as well as yelping vocals and fuzzy textures that take in a range of emotions and even bigger riffs. This issue features a special insert and comes across four sides of vinyl so it's nice and loud, just as intended.

Review: Arguably one of the most integral tentpoles of the grunge movement, Alice In Chains' seminal sophomore effort, Dirt, changed the game upon its release in 1992. Featuring some of the band's most classic cuts such as, 'Them Bones', 'Down In A Hole', 'Rooster', and, 'Junkhead', to name but a few; the incomparable dynamic of Wayne Staley's iconic vocals and cryptic, yet brutally honest lyricism combined with guitarist Jerry Cantrell's mammoth riffs and delicate nuance, still resides high in the echelons of alternative rock three decades on. For lifers and newcomers alike, this 30-year anniversary edition serves as an ideal opportunity to revisit a genuine classic, far murkier and riddled with antagonistic depths than any of its would-be peers.

Review: The third full-length from Canada's greatest thrash metal act, Annihilator, was met with initial puzzlement upon its release in 1993. 'Set The World On Fire' saw the band straw away from the more metallic route of albums such as 'Alice In Hell', in favour of a more radio-friendly approach. Time working its nostalgic magic has led to cuts like, 'Knight Jumps Queen', and, 'Brain Dance', becoming live staples since, while many have grown to appreciate the expansive and accessible scope the project exuded. The final full-length to feature bassist Wayne Darley, as well as their final work with renowned metal label Roadrunner, this reissue comes at a retrospective time where artists can cherish their once misunderstood works, and offer them up to new legions of eager, less judgemental fans.

Falling somewhere between the glammy, inescapable essence of late eighties hair metal, and a deeper, darker atmosphere than even their more blatant peers in Slayer or Metallica could muster, 'Alice In Hell', still stands today as an integral, essential contribution to the metal world. Any self-respecting metalhead should either be well versed with this record, or pre-ordering a copy right this second.

Review: Dividing critics on its initial release - review scores veering from 2/5 to 4.5/5 - Annihilator were always going to be one of those bands you either loved or forgot about pretty quickly. In many ways, this 1990 sophomore album is the epitome of where stadium heavy metal had been for the last few years, the sort of tracks that seem to launch from the starting blocks and scarcely look up from the riffs. In other ways, there's a lot here pointing towards the genre's immediate future, too.

Reading into things and then reading them again aside, what's really important is the quality of execution, and in this context the Ontario, Canada, band are on top form. Running at breakneck speed, every cymbal crash, each staccato kick drum pattern is not only in the perfect place for what they want to achieve, it's delivered with the gusto of an outfit who simply don't know how to let up.

Review: Since the unveiling of their decrepit debut EP Granular Transformation at the end of 2020, Californian doom-tinged tech-death brutalists Apparition have become a hushed name and recommended extremity amongst the caverns of audible ugliness. Following on from 2021's insidious and unsettling full-length LP Feel, the band return with Disgraced Emanations From A Tranquil State; a monolithic opus set to eclipse any of the muted hope of their previous material. Dissecting forms of early psychedelic proto-doom, but with the sole intention of re-channelling those fuzzed out sonics into abyssal swathes of complex, heaving dread, this isn't your beer-chugging, whiplash-headbanging gross out death metal (while there's always a place for that). Rather, this is a cosmic realm of Lovecraftian variety, designed to enthral, impress, touch, harrow, and haunt in equal measure. Arriving courtesy of Canadian extreme metal peddlers Profound Lore, no refunds will be offered for those lost to the abyss.

Review: British rock band Atomic Rooster - made up from members of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown aka organ player Vincent Crane and sticks man Carl Palmer - had success in the 70s and 80s. They went through some mad stylistic changes in that time but remain best known for their hit singles 'Tomorrow Night' which hit number 11 in the UK charts and number four gem 'Devil's Answer', which both came in 1971. Neither of them feature on their self-titled album and debut from 1970 which itself made the Top 50 of the UK album charts, but it still packs a real punch with a prog rock feel.

Review: After a three year gap, Kruller is a mightily impressive new album from Author & Punisher that features some high grade collaborators such as Perturbator's James Kent and Tool's Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor. Leader Tristan Shone has obviously used his tie off wisely and remerges refined and re-tooled. The band has an unconventional sound that uses a new setup of machines or this album with the tunes coming-out of them being anthems for the self-absorbed society we live in today. This is the band's seventh full length album and it might just be their best.

Review: The eighth full-length from San Francisco Bay Area death metal outcasts, Autopsy, is a masterclass in pummelling, depraved, metallic extremity of the purest, rawest form. Their first studio effort in almost a decade, and follow up to 2014's, 'Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves'; there's no ignoring the seasoned veteran aura smothering the intricate brutality from beginning to end, with vicious cuts such as, 'The Voracious One', offset by the Lovecraftian riffage of, 'Flesh Strewn Temple'. Even the artwork bares the comic book, retro vulgarity that sent parents of the late 80s/early 90s lunging for their bibles long ago. Truly, a terrible marrying of old school and modern death metal tropes to conjure an experience independent of both innate styles.

Review: If this is your first run in with Babymetal we'd be interested to know what brought you to this retrospective compilation first. Perhaps someone politely recommended the Japanese kawaii metallers when you mentioned the need to be pummelled with power riffs set to bubblegum pop? Maybe you were looking for some of the fastest guitar tracks available - like a sonic espresso shot piped directly into an artery.

Either way you won't be disappointed. Opening on 'Doki Doki Morning', which sounds like what might happen if an East Asian High School Musical cast were supporting Enter Shikari, the pace never drops until the end of this ten track collection, with work like 'Megitsune' showcasing the outfit at their heaviest and most theatrical, while the appropriately titled 'Gimme Chocolate!!' arguably representing the most popcorn end of this sugar-fuelled rock out.

Review: The fifth full-length Bad Brains record, and follow up to 1989's, 'Quickness', marked their first upon signing to major label, Epic Records, while it's generally considered to be somewhat of a controversial outlier in their discography. This is due, in no small part, to its notable absence of vocalist, HR, replaced here by Israel Joseph I, while Cro-Mags drummer Mackie Jayson would be fully enlisted as Earl Hudon's replacement after his session work on their preceding album. Somewhat noted for causing the identity crisis of their funk metal crossover thrash experiments following the slew of acts who would come out of the woodwork heralding the band's latter-day material as intrinsic influence, 'Rise', is definitely due to its own individual reassessment with regards to its place in the legacy of one of the all-time greats.

Review: BIG BRAVE's music epitomises what has been called 'massive minimalism,' with layers of textural distortion and feedback accentuating its weight and frayed edges. Their artistry blends traditional folk techniques with a modern deconstruction of guitar music, all of which is evident in the new album A Chaos Of Flowers, which is a follow-up to their fierce 2023 album Nature Morte. Lyrically, the songs delve into vulnerability, isolation, and co-existence in nature and guitarist and vocalist Robin Wattie drew inspiration from poetry by female-presenting artists, exploring alienation's impact on the psyche. This record is a testament to the band's ability to evoke intense emotions through minimalist yet powerful arrangements.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Black Sabbath are one of those bands that, even if you think you've heard it all, will almost certainly have a vault of music sitting somewhere untouched. Their legacy is so significant, and covers so many decades, many of which preceded these un-inspiringly organised and archived music years, there's going to be forgotten recordings in half the UK's rock 'n' roll pubs that are still standing, and that's just for starters.

Here, ten of those overlooked, dust-covered, neglected and rejected dark metal adventures are collected into one bumper, super-collector's item. Even a quick play through proves that this record deserves to exist, whether the tracks are new to you or not these versions are nothing short of epic. More so, though, the collection shows Sabbath were not just prolific, but achingly talented and absolutely impossible to countenance. Ever. Riffs for days, energy for weeks, and innovation for all time, although we probably didn't need to point that out.

Review: Caputing the band in live action during the early 80s, Black Sabbath's Born In Hell is culled from the short tenure of former Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan as lead vocalist, after the departiure of Ozzy Osbourne's replacemennt Ronnie James Dio. Therefore, among the run through the Brum band's overwhelmingly legendary back catalogue there nestles a very Sabbath take on 'Smoke On The Water'. Of course, the biggest selling-point here is simply Sabbath doing Sabbath, very loudly, although not quite as loud as the crowd's reaction at various points of the show. Not least Tony Iommi's insane solo as 'War Pigs' refuels in preparation for its monumental climax, worth the price of admission alone.

Review: While the critical reception wasn't initially kind to the final Black Sabbath album of the Tony Martin era, time's healing powers have offered the eighteenth full-length a slight reprieve, with many now learning to appreciate the ambition Tony Iommi imbued into the project. Many might have scoffed at Ernie C of Body Count handling production duties, even enlisting bandmate Ice-T for the spoken word section of opener, 'The Illusion Of Time', but with the subsequent reunion of Iommi and Ozzy not long after, there's no denying the sheer individuality this album offered, toying with everything from blues to power metal motifs. Martin would go on to refer to the effort as a "filler album that got the band out of the label deal, rid of the singer, and into the reunion", but with the near-two decade wait for, '13', some still gave Forbidden, the spins and attention it deserved. Reissued for forgiving ears and those willing to revisit.

Review: Experience a fly-on-the-wall earful of the ultimate pioneers of metal at the height of their initial creative run, performing seminal cuts from both their self-titled debut, and sophomore stratosphere catapulting follow up, 'Paranoid'. Taken from a BBC recording session at the Paris Theatre in London's Lower Regent Street in 1970, cuts such as, 'Iron Man', 'War Pigs', 'Behind The Wall Of Sleep', and, the legendary title tracks from both full-lengths, explode with the youthful bombast of which they were crafted, while the lush cover of, 'Blue Suede Shoes', hints at the humorous camaraderie that always existed just a breadth behind the macabre mask of their macabre audible aesthetics.

Review: After Ronnie James Dio would leave Black Sabbath (again) following his revisit for 1992's, 'Dehumanizer', Tony Martin would find himself re-enlisted for the often misunderstood Cross Purposes. With Geezer Butler still handling bass duties at this point, before his departure (and subsequent return on Forbidden), and the arrival of Rainbow drummer Bobby Rondinelli, who bailed on the recording sessions of Quiet Riot's Terrified, to help his dark brothers in need; the project would only make slight impressions on the somewhat exhausted listenership who had become worn out with the band's excessive line-up shifts. Now with the reissuing of several of the I.R.S. label days output, the album has been offered a chance at re-evaluation, with many regarding the Tony Martin era with a newfound degree of reverence.

Review: 1975's Black Sabbath album, Sabotage, was written at a time when the band were caught up in an ongoing legal battle with their former manager. That is what gave the album its title and no doubt fuelled some of the more abrasive and angry tracks. The newly remastered reissue is now paired with a complete live show that was recorded during the band's 1975 tour. Of the 16 tracks, 13 have never before been released. As well as a special new booklet with further fan delights, two extra tracks feature on a bonus 7" with artwork that replicates a rare Japanese version of the single.

Review: Iconic English rock band Black Sabbath's third studio album Master of Reality gets the full treatment for this year's Record Store Day. Pressed up on nice purple vinyl with an embossed sleeve in limited quantities, it was released on 21 July 1971 by Vertigo Records. Weirdly, at the time, the album only got a lukewarm reception from critics. Over the years though, that perception has changed and now it is often considered one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. If sales are anything to go by, that must be true, as it went double platinum and sold over two million copies.

How can heavy metal-ers not get excited about this one? While sporting a pretty serious price tag, this Super Deluxe edition of Black Sabbath's seminal fourth album is certainly one for the collectors, who will delight in the 11 additional studio recordings featured in the huge amount of bonus material here, which include snippets of studio dialogue, false starts and more rough around the edges nuances that bring the work to life.

As for the LP itself, it was something of a landmark moment in the band's journey - shifting the intensity and ferocity up at least three gears and then sticking a brick on the throttle to hold it in place. Perhaps Mojo's take on things puts it best; ""If booze and dope had helped fuel Sabbath's earlier albums, Vol. 4 is their cocaine ... Despite their spiraling addictions, musically Vol. 4 is another ambitious outing". Enough said.

Review: Black Sabbath remain one of the UK's most heralded doom metal and hard rock bands and Reflection is a 1975 album that came when they were at the peak of their powers. In addition to being pioneers of heavy metal, they also have been credited for laying the foundations for heavy metal subgenres stoner rock, all of which can be heard here. It is an album of heavy riffs, kick-ass grooves and mad solos. 'Who Are You?' incorporates some twisted synth work that is likely borrowed from prog rock while 'Killing Yourself To Live' is an all out thrasher.
