Review: The story goes with this one that a collective of seasoned musicians came together and discovered a rare camaraderie. With no hesitation, they poured their everything out onto tape and the results are now presented here on this one-sided and etched 12" under the title Better Lovers. Out features former Every Time I Die members Jordan Buckley on guitar, Steve Micciche on bass, and Clayton "Goose" Holyoak on drums with frontman Greg Puciato on vocals and Grammy-winning producer Will Putney. The music is dense metal with walls of sound washing over you and full of big guitar riffs, guttural vocals and dark energy.

Obfuscating The Linear Threshold (4:25)
Hovering Lifeless (3:47)
Subterranean Aeon (6:09)
Review: "Murky Tech Death" was how one critic thought best to describe Blood Incantation. It's not hard to hear what they meant on this 2015 EP from the death metal outfit. It's riff-y but in a mathematical and angular kind of way, with nods to futurism also evident in the lyrical themes that look skywards, beyond the stratosphere, and into the great unknown which humankind still can barely reach due to the limitations of our own technological forward march.

There are moments here so complex the art of listening itself becomes something of an exact science - the lead guitar crescendos of 'Obfuscating The Linear Threshold' for example. Or the rhythmic propulsion of 'Hovering Lifeless'. The result is a masterclass of heavy, doom-y noise that packs musicality and drama into all four tracks.

Review: Phantomimea arrives through Loma Vista Recordings and is a brilliant new five-track cover EP from Ghost. Each and every tune is epic in its own way with material by Television, Genesis, The Stranglers, Iron Maiden and Tina Turner all chewed up and sat out in their own inimitable way. Though some of these sources are rather unlikely given Ghost's style they are all reworked with great respect. Ghost is in a great run of form having just won Best Rock Album of the Year at the iHeart Radio Music Awards, which itself came off last year's international chart-topping success Impera.

Ghost - "Hunter's Moon" (3:14)
John Carpenter - "Halloween Kills" (main Title) (1:43)
Review: This latest single by anonymous, masked metal supergroup Ghost hears the band lay down a haunting, straight-up hard rock clanger, in support of the upcoming 2021 slasher film 'Halloween Kills'. 'Hunter's Moon' stops and starts between choral sections erratically, as though the musicians have synchronously taken the same brand of nightmare pill. "I'm dying to see you once agian" is the refrain, carefully double-entendring into deathly, mathy elysium. On the back, John Carpenter's new 'Halloween Kills' theme, a rerun of the '78 classic. It's just as fitting that both songs should be released on limited 7" clear, alabaster vinyl - the colour of blood-drained skin, or brittle ghost's bones.

Review: "This 10" single reissue comes in celebration of the upcoming 30th anniversary of Ozzy Osbourne's 'No More Tears'. A new mashup sure to inspire only the best moshpitting and hair-flicking skills from every true hard rock head, this new track hears a the original Ozzy song mashed up with Motorhread's version. Never before released, it sounds like an alternate Dante eagerly cruising through the many layers of hell, as new drum reversings, stereo effects and soundscapes are peppered into this masterful musical jigsaw. The B-side also contains the two original, unremixed versions.

Review: The second full-length from Los Angeles crust-punk/powerviolence mob ACxDC (Antichrist Demoncore) arrived in 2020, six years after their venomous self-titled debut made good on the promise of over a decade's worth of demos, EPs and splits. Satan Is King (a nod to Kanye West's 'Jesus Is King' released the year prior) is another caustic batch of pummelling d-beat punk funnelled through a rusted scuzzy decanter of hardcore fury and satanic worship, featuring feel good hits of the summer such as 'Copsucker'. In all seriousness, if you find your current hardcore lacking in the blasphemy department or just a tad too sanitised, then look no further than this crushing collection of audible violence from true cavern crawlers of the underground.

Three decades later their seminal sophomore effort, Dirt sounds as good as it ever did and gets an anniversary reissue to mark the occasion. It comes with plenty of powerful drums and big-ass basslines as well as yelping vocals and fuzzy textures that take in a range of emotions and even bigger riffs. This issue features a special insert and comes across four sides of vinyl so it's nice and loud, just as intended.

Review: The third full-length from Canada's greatest thrash metal act, Annihilator, was met with initial puzzlement upon its release in 1993. 'Set The World On Fire' saw the band straw away from the more metallic route of albums such as 'Alice In Hell', in favour of a more radio-friendly approach. Time working its nostalgic magic has led to cuts like, 'Knight Jumps Queen', and, 'Brain Dance', becoming live staples since, while many have grown to appreciate the expansive and accessible scope the project exuded. The final full-length to feature bassist Wayne Darley, as well as their final work with renowned metal label Roadrunner, this reissue comes at a retrospective time where artists can cherish their once misunderstood works, and offer them up to new legions of eager, less judgemental fans.

Review: Since the unveiling of their decrepit debut EP Granular Transformation at the end of 2020, Californian doom-tinged tech-death brutalists Apparition have become a hushed name and recommended extremity amongst the caverns of audible ugliness. Following on from 2021's insidious and unsettling full-length LP Feel, the band return with Disgraced Emanations From A Tranquil State; a monolithic opus set to eclipse any of the muted hope of their previous material. Dissecting forms of early psychedelic proto-doom, but with the sole intention of re-channelling those fuzzed out sonics into abyssal swathes of complex, heaving dread, this isn't your beer-chugging, whiplash-headbanging gross out death metal (while there's always a place for that). Rather, this is a cosmic realm of Lovecraftian variety, designed to enthral, impress, touch, harrow, and haunt in equal measure. Arriving courtesy of Canadian extreme metal peddlers Profound Lore, no refunds will be offered for those lost to the abyss.

Review: British rock band Atomic Rooster - made up from members of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown aka organ player Vincent Crane and sticks man Carl Palmer - had success in the 70s and 80s. They went through some mad stylistic changes in that time but remain best known for their hit singles 'Tomorrow Night' which hit number 11 in the UK charts and number four gem 'Devil's Answer', which both came in 1971. Neither of them feature on their self-titled album and debut from 1970 which itself made the Top 50 of the UK album charts, but it still packs a real punch with a prog rock feel.

Black Sabbath are one of those bands that, even if you think you've heard it all, will almost certainly have a vault of music sitting somewhere untouched. Their legacy is so significant, and covers so many decades, many of which preceded these un-inspiringly organised and archived music years, there's going to be forgotten recordings in half the UK's rock 'n' roll pubs that are still standing, and that's just for starters.

Here, ten of those overlooked, dust-covered, neglected and rejected dark metal adventures are collected into one bumper, super-collector's item. Even a quick play through proves that this record deserves to exist, whether the tracks are new to you or not these versions are nothing short of epic. More so, though, the collection shows Sabbath were not just prolific, but achingly talented and absolutely impossible to countenance. Ever. Riffs for days, energy for weeks, and innovation for all time, although we probably didn't need to point that out.

How can heavy metal-ers not get excited about this one? While sporting a pretty serious price tag, this Super Deluxe edition of Black Sabbath's seminal fourth album is certainly one for the collectors, who will delight in the 11 additional studio recordings featured in the huge amount of bonus material here, which include snippets of studio dialogue, false starts and more rough around the edges nuances that bring the work to life.

As for the LP itself, it was something of a landmark moment in the band's journey - shifting the intensity and ferocity up at least three gears and then sticking a brick on the throttle to hold it in place. Perhaps Mojo's take on things puts it best; ""If booze and dope had helped fuel Sabbath's earlier albums, Vol. 4 is their cocaine ... Despite their spiraling addictions, musically Vol. 4 is another ambitious outing". Enough said.

Review: 1975's Black Sabbath album, Sabotage, was written at a time when the band were caught up in an ongoing legal battle with their former manager. That is what gave the album its title and no doubt fuelled some of the more abrasive and angry tracks. The newly remastered reissue is now paired with a complete live show that was recorded during the band's 1975 tour. Of the 16 tracks, 13 have never before been released. As well as a special new booklet with further fan delights, two extra tracks feature on a bonus 7" with artwork that replicates a rare Japanese version of the single.

Review: Caputing the band in live action during the early 80s, Black Sabbath's Born In Hell is culled from the short tenure of former Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan as lead vocalist, after the departiure of Ozzy Osbourne's replacemennt Ronnie James Dio. Therefore, among the run through the Brum band's overwhelmingly legendary back catalogue there nestles a very Sabbath take on 'Smoke On The Water'. Of course, the biggest selling-point here is simply Sabbath doing Sabbath, very loudly, although not quite as loud as the crowd's reaction at various points of the show. Not least Tony Iommi's insane solo as 'War Pigs' refuels in preparation for its monumental climax, worth the price of admission alone.

Review: There's arguably few modern bands pushing and expanding the confines of death metal like Denver, Colorado based genre provocateurs, Blood Incantation.

Combining intricate tech-death stylings with psychedelic, prog-rock passages all awash in sci-fi hues led to 2019's 'Hidden History of the Human Race', landing on several end of year lists.

The much anticipated follow up, 'Timewave Zero', is a purposeful 180 from their formula, eschewing vocals, riffs and malevolence for ambient, synth-based science fiction psychedelia akin to latter day Tangerine Dream.

It may seem a perplexing departure, but one the group have envisioned since prior to releasing their 'Starspawn' debut in 2016. Continuing to carve out their own path, and craft a solely unique vision may lose some riff-raff semi-fans, but those willing to follow Blood Incantation on their ever unfolding cosmic journey, have just been handed the keys to the unknown.

It turned out to be utter lies as the band have since performed a recent secret reunion show, and unveiled the blistering return single, 'One Twenty Two'. The reissue of their magnum opus,' We Are The Romans', has been a criminally overdue process, with the frenetic project heralded as a genre cornerstone as well as a primary influence on names such as Converge and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Complex, aggressive, and caustic in oppressive measures, this is an essential for any fans of hardcore, metal or the most abrasive forms of the ugly nexus where the two intersect and clash.

Review: Welsh hard rock band Budgie never quite reached the highs of some of their peers by still did plenty for the evolution of their own particular musical niche. The were often said to be a blend of Rush's progressive styles and the more direct and dark heaviness of Black Sabbath. At the heart of the band was Burke Shelley's vocals - famous for their high-pitched banshee style - and despite being commercially unheralded, they have been mentioned as an influence by the likes of Iron Maiden, Van Halen and Queens of the Stone Age. This live show from LA in the late 70s catches them in electrifying form.

Review: Ever consistent Canadian hardcore punk crew, Cancer Bats, are seemingly set to return with their follow up to 2018's 'The Spark That Moves', which marks their first offering following the departure of founding guitarist Scott Middleton.

With the frenetic thrashings of latest single, 'Lonely Bong', the group haven't sounded this vitriolic or pissed off in the better part of a decade.

From the thunderous title-track alone, it's evident 'Psychic Jailbreak' marks a smouldering return to form with low end grooves and Southern snarl imbued within its hardcore bindings. Cancer Bats have always sounded their best when resembling Every Time I Die getting into a beer-soaked bar brawl with Down, and this could be the fight that leads to a hospital visit.

Review: Following their early slew of EPs that would slowly begin to reshape the modern metal landscape, it was 1985's full-length debut, To Mega Therion, that would immortalise Swiss extreme metal provocateurs, Celtic Frost, as the macabre saviours of a scene unaware of the perils that awaited it. Credited alongside Venom's aptly titled, 'Black Metal', as the true genesis of a scene and formula still not altered too greatly in the near four decades since inception, it's little wonder how many classic acts from Mayhem to Darkthrone cite the band, and this project in particular, as an integral influence. Sporting some of the literal greatest extreme metal cuts to ever grace tortured ears, such as, 'The Usurper', and the twisted epic, 'Circle Of The Tyrants', along with the iconic H.R. Giger drawn artwork, this classic can be traced back from the vast majority of black, death, doom and almost any other horrific subgenre of metallic origin.

Review: Like Ronseal does exactly what it says on the tin, Procreation Of The Wicked: Rehearsal June '84 is a rare session recorded by Swiss extreme metal pioneers Celtic Frost, the same year they unveiled their debut EP/mini-LP Morbid Tales. Later expanded into what the band would retrospectively regard as their debut full-length, the bulk of material from this session comes directly from this project, with the notable inclusion of studio-version lacking 'Messiah', which has grown to become an underappreciated fan favourite in the decades since, largely due to its rehearsal session-only mystique. Raw, feral, and boasting the proto black metal thrash abrasion that would utterly reroute the metallic landscape for future generations, this early incarnation time capsule is a vital piece of extreme metal history, though its ragged edges require true fandom to appreciate the boundary-pushing genius being captured in real time.

Review: .By its very nature, Tenkiller is a very different beast to Chat Pile's other releases. Recorded in the winter of 2020 to be the soundtrack to Tenkiller, an indie movie about the lives of ordinary people in small-town America, it sees the noise-rock/post-hardcore combo focus on mood and tone, rather than form and function. As a result, fuzzy and forthright cuts of the sort you'd expect come supplemented by dystopian, industrial-influenced soundscapes, lo-fi alt-country, guitar-laden mood pieces, low-slung and effects-laden creepiness, intense electronica and the kind of slow-burn ambient-not-ambient that was once the preserve of cult bands such as Labradford.

Review: Returning a half-decade on from their despicable 2019 statement of hubris Beyond The Circular Demise, Japanese brutal death metal legends Coffins deliver their Sinister Oath. Recorded ahead of the band's 25th anniversary celebration in Tokyo, their latest offering retreads the gore-laden psychosphere of 90's brutal death metal, yet with an increased obsession on heaving tonal bedlam of the most cavernous doom. Packed with grinding, angular, buzzsaw riffage and overwhelming barrages of blast beats and utterly grotesque guttural vocals, Coffins reclaim a genre they entered during its most formative years and redefine its alienating heaviness and impenetrable compositions for both lifers who require a rejuvenated creative kick and newcomers who likely aren't in any way prepared for the brutality that awaits.

This much hyped new album Vaxis II: A Window of the Waking Mind goes some way to backing that up and was produced by the band's own Claudio Sanchez and Zakk Cervini. Early singles got a great reception from fans and critics and showcased what to expect from the full album - thrashing heavy metal-infused riffs with vast in scale melodic vocals that are this band's signature style.

Review: Originally unveiled in 1999, Danzig's sixth studio album certainly had pretty big ideas behind it. As Glenn Danzig said at the time of its release, this was the band's first LP to involve digitally recorded voices. The frontman and founder also attempted to distill the best parts of the preceding five records, and the acclaimed Thrall EP, while adding some new "flavours" to the mix.

So, what does that sound like? Well, it's a big room-filling, industrial-edged metal powerhouse of a release that can easily satisfy both fans of more mainstream guitar tones and those who really never want to compromise at all, and demand nothing but raw, unfettered, bleeding edge noises that refuse to desist. Simply put, it's a pretty timeless work that fully deserves this re-release.

Review: Th eighth full-length from former Misfits horror-crooner Glenn Danzig's solo project/band served as their first LP to not carry a number, following 777: I Luciferi which angled itself as the closing work of that initial seven volume sequence. Originally released in 2004, Circle Of Snakes continues the descent of Danzig into a rawer, more abrasive form of metallic leaning gothic hard rock, with a notable lowering of vocals in the mix in order to elevate the churning jaggedness of the instrumental rumble. Continuing to eschew the more industrial programming of previous Danzig entries and echoing the stripped back approach of 'Danzig 1' and the increased heaviness of the aforementioned Luciferi, the album would also mark the first appearance of Tommy Victor of Prong on guitars, helping to aid the audible malevolence and ultimately leading to one of the strongest contributions to Danzig's latter day 21st century output.

Review: Released first round time in 2002, Danzig's 777: I Luciferi is a step away from the programmed industrial influences of the two albums that preceded it in favour of a return to the metallic, rawer sound that helped Glenn Danzig stand apart from his horror shadowed punk beginnings. Now, more than 20 years on, this reissue is a reminder of Luciferi as a high watermark in the later work of one of the most controversial figures in metal, punk and hard rock.

Shying away from the more industrial programming of his two previous endeavors in order to full re-capture the raw metallic audible aesthetics that had initially helped Danzig stand apart from his horror-punk beginnings, cuts like the beastly 'Wicked Pussycat' or sultry darkness of 'Naked Witch' still resonate with a macabre coolness exclusive to our Glenn. More than two decades on, this reissue serves as reminder of Luciferi as a major highpoint in the latter work of one of the most singular, controversial figures in hard rock, punk and metal to this day.

Review: The long-gestating follow up to 1992's initial instalment, Black Aria II would finally arrive in 2006 after years of discussion from Misfits/Samhain horror-punk visionary Glenn Danzig, and further his exploration into the cavernous realms of modern classical dark ambience. Conceptually based around Lillith, the first wife of Adam, the material here is far more minimalist and starker than its gothic predecessor, while utilising a more varied array of instruments on top of the pre-established organ and strings, with more Eastern sonic influences to conjure a mercurial vision independent of the preceding volume. Complete with eerie chimes, chants and esoteric lamentations, the project marks one of Danzig's most intriguing works when compared to, say, his Elvis covers compilations, and offers a transportive, biblical, haunting narrative delivered almost exclusively via instrumental atmospherics and insidious gloom.

Review: The ninth full-length from Dio still feels like a recent contribution to the former Black Sabbath frontman's expansive canon, even though we find ourselves celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The first project to feature Whitesnake alumni Doug Aldrich on lead guitar, who would subsequently return for 2004's, 'Master Of The Moon'; Ronnie James Dio would handle production duties himself, while penning a surrealist fantasy vision-quest analysing our increasing reliance on technology through metaphorical encounters with dragons. The project is also notable for its lead single, 'Push', which featured self-professed Dio worshippers, Tenacious D, in the hit music video.

Review: Norwegian progressive death metal auteurs, Diskord, make their discordant (geddit?) return on the ferocious 'Degenerations.' This third full-length, and follow up to 2014's dizzying, 'Oscillations EP', serves as an intimidating insight into the cosmic grandiosity such an extreme and niche genre can conjure. Over a seven-year writing/recording process, enlisting the help of Colin Marston of genre legends, Gorguts, as well as imbuing the material with a plethora of unlikely instrumentation from electric upright bass and cello to theremin, has resulted in a work so seemingly impenetrable, yet vastly rewarding with each subsequent delve into the psychosphere.

Review: Don Dokken returns 11 years after the divisive Broken Bones album to give people much more of what they want. Fans of Dokken, and all things Dokken-esque, will likely attest with open armed honesty to the fact they're here for some insanely oversized riffs and classic, polished driving heavy metal, and it's safe to say that Heaven Comes Down delivers on those counts. Then it throws in a load more. While very much sounding like a time capsule back to the heyday of this sound, this isn't to suggest there has been no progress, development, or evolution. As critics pointed out when this hunk of wail and muscle landed, the eponymous frontman is arguably at his most laidback on this record, and vocals are used not just to provide a focal point in between all that shedding, but also as a complement to other elements making up some pretty complex arrangements.

Review: The 1993 debut full-length from "Satanic industrial metal" envelope pushers, The Electric Hellfire Club, was a perfect storm of sex, drugs, and serial killer infatuation dressed up in gothic, metallic, near techno mayhem. Following mastermind Thomas Thorn's departure from My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, 'Burn, Baby, Burn!', would serve as the birth of edgy ideals, delivered with sonic abandon and tongue located firmly in cheek, while samples of low budget horror movies as well as invoking Satanic church founder Anton LaVey, served as the hysteric cherry on top of the dodgy sundae, designed to provoke and bemuse in equal measure. LaVey would later go on to ordain Thorn as a priest of the Satanic church, but that's a story for another time.

It's in the middleground where ruthless bastardisations of frantic mathcore and groove laden nu-metal coalesce to conjure crushing bangers such as 'Twist The Blade' or lead single, 'Mark Of The Grave.'

He is best known for his work as a guitarist with Motorhead but this band's debut album - originally released in 1983 - was also a hit with fans old and new. Its biggest moments are the singles 'We Become One' and 'Easy Livin', but the title track - which oddly was never actually put out as an official single, managed to become the band's most successful hit. Review: An extremely tehchnical tech-death metal gem from French-Canadian band First Fragment. If there's any metal that 'Gloire Eternelle' deals in, it's mercury, because this band, since their formation in 2007, have always treated the genre with infinite malleability, wafting their talent for double-kicks and solos about the room like an inescapable gas. Even touches of flamenco and neoclassical epic storytelling touch on this wholly instrumental odyssey, which you can now catch for the first time in 'gold splattered' 2xLP form since its initial digital release.

Review: Criminally underrated and overlooked, San Francisco Bay Area tech-thrash titans, Forbidden, are often heralded as one of the genre's true outlier staples that contributed to the scene's endless expansion into several other forms of sonic assault. Their fourth full-length, 'Green', released in 1997 following the departure of members including Rob Flynn who would go on to become a figurehead in his own right as the mastermind behind Machine Head; this offering served as somewhat of a rebirth with the group steering away from their pre-determined formula in order to purse a much heftier, groove metal oriented style. The final work of their original tenure before reconvening for the 2010 swansong, 'Omega Wave'; this project is the sound of a classic era of metal being manipulated and pushed to unusual extremes, that has only gone on to inspire many modern-day acts, regardless of what the footnotes tell you.

Review: Taking both acts on their core traits, Full Of Hell primarily deal in death-grind fusion with some blackened aspects and a powerviolence twist, with their tracks rarely crossing the two-minute threshold and their average album length clocking in at approximately 20 minutes and some change. Primitive Man on the other hand, are the type of abyss dwellers that deal in lengthy sonic dirges, often running for well over an hour at a time. What happens when you combine two unmatched forces of modern extremity into one nightmare-fuelled hellscape of sonic torture? You get a truly oppressive display of grinding, trudging sludge-soaked doom with walls of caustic harsh noise which drone on for lengthy uncomfortable sections. Ugly, slow, unwelcoming and vile, 'Suffocating Hallucination' does its utmost to earn its nihilistic title, and offers little in the way of hope on its successful pilgrimage into the abyss.

Review: Full of Hell join forces with Primitive Man for the new release Suffocating Hallucination, a collaborative record that is followed up by both bands touring. The music is controlled chaos with lots of harsh sonics and violent textures across the tracks which all drag you kicking and screaming through pure metal misery and torture. Walls of guitar noise, heavy doom and gloom atmospheres and plenty of distortion define this most abrasive of listens - which will no doubt be a joy to the ears of hardcore metal fans. What a monster of an album and a real showcase of sonic scuzzery.
