  2. Concord (8:35)
  3. Kodama (6:39)
  4. Paraztul (8:04)
Review: Having previously appeared on Nyame and Something Happening, Somewhere, Amsterdam-based producer Vand now brings his delicate, dubby take on techno to Alpengluhen. Nodding to the atmospheric moods of Claro Intelecto and the like, he draws you in with the icy refrains of "Altarf-unn" before upping the emotion with the heart-wrenching pads of "Concord". "Kodama" has a more pronounced impact which is tempered by liberal delay and reverb, and "Paraztul" keeps things spacious and fractured for a more electronica-tinged trip outside the 4/4 slipstream.

OHM (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ARV 001. Rel: 22 Jan 18
  1. Christ - "Rom"
  2. Norken & Nyquist - "Od Detot"
  3. Solipsism - "Vice Is Nice"
  4. Nyquist - "Fornax"
  5. Analogue Audio Association - "Antikorper"
  6. Cyan341 - "What's Going On"
  7. Mick Chillage - "From Ripples"
Review: After years spent supporting the underground IDM scene digitally, Glasgow label Ambidextrous makes the leap to vinyl with this killer compilation of ear-catching deep techno and electronica. Christ brings a bubbling range of synth tones to "Rom" before Norken and Nyquist drop some brooding electro tones over rolling beats on"Od Detot". Solipsism has a more sassy house sound to impart, while Nyquist goes into full electro mode on his own. On the flip, Analogue Audio Association have some edgy acid to throw down, Cyan341 brings a touch of boogie flex to the record and Mich Chillage rounds the record off with emotive outboard electronics of a reflective nature.

  1. Flying Kites (11:30)
  2. Keep Me Close (5:31)
  3. Trace Of Smoke (5:52)
Review: London based producer Jules Venturini is up next for Whities, following up great releases by Avalon Emerson and Lanark Artefax. On the label's 14th edition, Venturini follows up some sludgy lo-fi techno/house derivatives on Polish label Brutaz with some more similarly rusty and dust covered aesthetics. Beginning with the 12 minute epic "Flying Kites" which channels early '90s British bleep IDM, until that fast hitting groove hits at just the right time towards the end. Lush ambient piece "Keep Me Close" works as an effective intermission of sorts on this grainy and saturated dream state captured to VHS. Finally, Venturini displays a more aggressive side as seen on his previous release with the gnarly and slow burning industrial electronics of "Trace Of Smoke".

  2. Topaz Fear (7:02)
  3. Death Wish (6:50)
  4. Golden Taurus (Heinrich Dressel remix) (5:52)
Review: Crimes Of The Future is the kind of label you can trust, no matter who is at the controls. The same could be said for Giallo Disco, and certainly the two labels orbit a similar space for lurid soundtrack-inspired hardware jams from the Italo age. Vercetti Technicolor is one half of the Giallo team alongside Antoni Maiovvi, and here steps out with a perfectly bombastic range of compositions that revel in B-movie brilliance. "Golden Taurus" is the perfect slow-burner, those mono bass notes warming like no soft synth ever could, while "Topaz Fear" brings a more action-driven sequence into the mix. "Death Wish" too opts for a pumped up club scenario, while Heinrich Dressel smokes out "Golden Taurus" into a seedy slow-jam.

  4. Zombies Under Stress - "Maan Zal Zijn" (Svengalisghost remix)
  5. Mark Forshaw - "Submission"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Contort Yourself has once again gathered the best and boldest from past and present for its fourth EP. To begin with we have the grimacing visage of Volition Immanent, an intense live act made up of Parrish Smith and Mark Van de Maat (Knekelhuis). Behind rawkish distortion, splintered beats and acrid bars screams a boiled anger; a track spitting on the divides of punk and electronics. Nastiness is taken up a notch as noise ne'er-do-wells Zombies Under Stress take over. Static is bent and doubled across thick chords and collapsed clap in the 1986 "Maan Zal Zijn" before the raw and raging battery of "In Onze Tijd." L.I.E.S. regular Svengalisghost grapples with "Maan Zal Zijn, channelling the original's rage into a mechanical monster. The 12" is bookended with bite as Mark Forshaw (Tabernacle/Berceuse Heroique) closes with the tortured and torrential thump of "Submission." A callous, caustic and fervently cruel EP.

Review: As was the case with its predecessors, the third volume in VEYL's ongoing "Previously Undisclosed Rituals" series is packed to the rafters with angry, lo-fi club cuts, paranoid pagan techno and wild, mind-altering dancefloor throb-jobs. It's all of a high standard, of course, but we're particularly enjoying the drowsy late night hypnotism of Terrence Fixmer's "Always Through", the pitch-black electronic body music of The Sixteen Steps' "Tales From The Old Country", the foreboding late night creepiness of Neud Photo's decidedly trippy "Plagued By Consciousness" and the rip-snorting techno stomp of VTSS's nails-hard opener "Toxic Bleach". In a word: intense.

  10. Ministry - "Same Old Madness" (5:10)
  11. Fad Gadget - "Back To Nature" (5:51)
Review: With the renewed attention surrounding industrial and EBM in the last few years (and its influence on techno, again), it's important that someone with credentials gives the new generation a decent history lesson. Fitting that Berghain resident and MDR boss Marcel Dettmann curates a compilation of classics from the sound's heyday: here's someone who actually lived through it. As part of Amsterdam imprint Dekmantel's Selectors Series, these gems from yesteryear should certainly set the record straight and provide solid reference points for new school retroverts. Highlights (and there's many) include: Belgian EBM legends Front 242 with "Don't Crash", Philadelphia industrial underdogs Executive Slacks' "So Mote It Be" and the mandatory Cabs track comes in the form of "Low Cool" (the Marcel Dettmann Edit, no less). It wouldn't be a proper industrial comp without a bit of Wax Trax! would it? Label staples Ministry appear with their 1982 song "Same Old Madness", a period in the band's history that some consider their finest.

  9. Taz & Meeks - "Obviously" (3:49)
Review: When they were asked to put together the latest volume in the "DJ Kicks" series, Mount Kimbie boys Dominic Maker and Kai Campos drew influence from their recent gigs DJing in support of Actress. As a result, their hugely enjoyable 9-track mix tends towards the experimental and off-kilter. The pair touches on a myriad of styles, including ambient, industrial-era experimentalism, South American influenced tropical drum jams, spacey modular techno, raw-edged peak-time jams, mind-altering acid weirdness and intergalactic electro. Highlights are plentiful, from the hypnotic intensity of Object Blue, to the skewed warmth of Severed Heads and the dream-like weirdness of their own exclusive contribution, "Southgate".

Review: The BEB boys have had this LP from Regis in the works for a while now, getting every coldwave freak from here to Timbuktu raving with excitement. Although this LP isn't made up wholly of new tracks, it is a fine compilation of the man's most important material post his purist techno days of the late 90's and early 2000's. Within, you'll find all of his most diverse and thought-provoking works, from the infamous remix of Raime's "This Foundry" to the gorgeous techno excursion that is the remix of "Loss" by Dalhous, a collection of works that span ambient, goth, techno and EBM. However, there a three new tunes: there's the excellent Nitzer Ebb-style remix of "Manbait" by Family Sex, the electrifying "CU1" by CUB, and the wavy, far-out trip that is "Plant Lillies At My Head" by Tropic Of Cancer. Yes, this is a bit special, so do the right thing.

  9. DVA Damas - "People Say I'm Cool"
Review: This fine compilation from Regis' Downwards label has been trailed as a kind of "family portrait" of where the imprint stands in 2019, offering a slew of exclusive tracks including a heap of cross-generational collaborations. There is plenty to set the pulse racing throughout the collection. "EBM supergroup" You Hung impresses via the moody and clanking, mid-80s industrial vibes of "The Truth Was Different (Live)", while Obelus' "Scale Reference" sounds like Richard D James after a particularly potent bong hit. Simon Shreeve's "The Space Between Cultures" is a creepy slab of ambient/noise fusion, Layne's "Raising Up, Removal" is a delightfully out there journey into metallic electro headiness and DVA Damas' sub-heavy cut "People Say I'm Cool" is as stylish and, let's face it, cool as the title suggests.

Review: Varg's Star Alliance originally took shape as a 6 cassette box set released in late 2015 on Posh Isolation now gets a re-release on vinyl and is definitely a must for fans of the Swedish producer. Said to be a collection of live recordings from his worldwide performances over an extended period, they are no doubt representative of his varied yet dynamic style, running the gamut from power electronics and dark ambient pieces through to deeply hypnotic techno that has seen him release on the likes of Northern Electronics and Semantica previously.

Review: Welcome to the world Cosmocities Records, a new French label whose first release is an incredible, triple-vinyl collection of what it calls "rare and beautiful instrumental tracks". It's a rather eclectic set, all told, but thanks to immaculate track selection and programming it hangs together exceptionally well. Flick through the clips and you'll find some next-level ambient bliss (Pepe), a crazy, flute-laden percussion workout (DJ Maboku), sunrise-ready dub techno (Segue), melodious ambient techno (Leif), Balearic space jazz (Jitwam), warm analogue deep house (Jaime Read) and a clutch of cuts that blur the boundaries between jazz-funk and broken beat. In other words, it's a stylistically diverse collection of brilliant electronic music that you'll want to listen to again and again.

Review: Efficient Space's latest essential release sees Andras and Instant Peterson take a trawl through the darker, lesser-visited corners of Australian electronic music. According to the label, the pair lifted material from "local 12" singles, CD-Rs and the archives of community radio station 3RRR FM". Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the acid-flecked, "Nude Photo" style Detroit fun of FSOM's "Resist The Beat" and chiming, trumpet-laden bliss of Ian Eccles-Smith's "The Slaughtering Eye", to the jaunty, mid-90s New York style bounce of Blimp's "Yellowgold" and the ultra-deep ambient techno pulse of Tetrphnm's "Track 11". Check, too, the enveloping dreaminess of Screensaver's drifting ambient closer, and the jazzy dancefloor depth of Inner Harmomy's "Da Lub Club".

Review: As the self-explanatory title suggests, the latest full-length excursion from the admirable Stroboscopic Artefacts label brings together new and unheard tracks from some of Italy's most forward-thinking electronic musicians. There's naturally plenty to enjoy throughout, from the hushed field recordings and drowsy ambient melodies of Andrea Belfi's "Spitting & Skytouching" and the deep, hypnotic and percussive flex of Ninos Du Brazil's magical "Noite Atras", to the acid-flecked dancefloor IDM bounce of Lory D and the bustling electro hum of Alessandro Adriani's "You Will Not Be There For The End". Throw in a couple of sublime ambient numbers and you have a superb snapshot of Italy's vibrant underground electronic scene.

  9. Obscure Shape & SHDW - "Die Wiederkehr" (6:37)
  10. Mind Against - "Gravity" (7:29)
Review: Tale of Us launch their Afterlife label in style with the Realm of Consciousness compilation. Bringing together some of the best-known names in contemporary techno as well as a group of newcomers, it moves effortlessly between esoteric moods. Tale of Us contribute the ambient intro, while Monoloc and Woo York are both in more mellow form than usual on the melodic "Phoenix" and "Poseidon" respectively. Meanwhile, Recondite contributes the sad melodies and throbbing bass of "Murphy's Law" and Locked Groove balances supernaturally beautiful hooks with powerful bass pulses on "Emeralds". Even more dance floor-focused tracks, like Obscure Shape & SHDW's "Die Wiederkehr", are filled with trancey melancholia.

  9. Rainforest - "Light Cascade"
  10. Mystica Tribe - "The Bells"
Review: ROHS! Records' first Dub Affairs compilation won the hearts and minds of many dub techno devotees when it appeared back in 2015. This second volume follows a similar blueprint - think scratchy dub techno, drone-encrusted ambient dub and spacey, intergalactic compositions - and is every bit as essential as its predecessor. Highlights include the fluttering melody lines, ultra-deep sub bass and broken rhythms of Gulls' "Inside Way (Version)", the dreamy, slow and low shuffle of "Caligari's Dub" by Bademah, and the exotic, up-tempo dub-tronica of Ondarituale's vocal number "I Segreti Di Una Generazione Di Mezzo". Best of all, though, is arguably Mystica Tribe's "The Bells", a positively loved-up trip into global dub fusion.

Review: Russia's Gost Zvuk label has long been a firm favourite here in the Juno office. Their glitchy, mysterious, futuristic music always makes for intriguing listening and now they celebrate five fantastic years with a compilation featuring a host of closely associated talents old and new. The bumper triple vinyl collection features paranoid experimental ambient that draws to mind covert spying operations, mangled machine music like INFX's "Damaged +dn", haunting modulated synth soundscapes from OL and skeletal techno rhythms that rewire your brain like Erofeev's "11bng". It all makes for a genuinely fresh and original collection of hugely provocative music.

Review: Basel-based group Varuna returns to Garcon and Agonius' Amenthia recordings, with an impressive debut long player, featuring four tracks of deep and ethereal sound exploration. Go deep into the rainforest on the esoteric opener "Departure From Kalidor", surrender to the void on the darkly psychedelic "Entela's Daymare" or lose yourself in the heady and hypnotic bliss of "Labyrinth Of Nuanto". Abstract tribal-trance expressions in the vein of Voices From The Lake, Nuel or natural/electronic.system - highly recommended!

Review: At the moment, little to nothing is nothing about either Visballa or Umummu Records other than the fact that both artist and label are associated with Berlin's Atelier crew. As a gentle reminder, they are the badboys making the dopest music around, under the Adopo moniker - friends of Sotofett, Dynamo Dreesen, SVN et al! Coming through in LP form, Mud HZ is probably the best piece of experimental work that we have heard this year - no lie! Through an odd and off-kilter approach to merging different aspects of the industrial realm under one roof, Visballa has hit the nail on the head when it comes to quirkiness. In fact, there is not much like this on our charts at the moment, both in and out of the leftfield game; it makes all the rest of the 'outsider' field seem stale by comparison. Highly recommended!
