Review: After slowly building his career over the last few years via well-received singles on Rave Or Die, Khemina Records and, most recently, Perc Trax, Guillaume Labadie delivers his hotly anticipated debut album. It's something of a beast, too, with 12 lengthy tracks spread across two CDs. After scene-setting via a constantly-building blast of symphonic synth strings, new wave style guitars and crashing drum rolls ("The Beginning of the End"), Labadie sprints through bombastic, mind-altering stompers ("Crossing The Mirror"), dark and twisted soundscapes ("Impossible Love"), distorted techno thumpers ("The Night Is Our Kingdom", "You Are Not Alone"), redlined downtempo soundscapes (the filthy "Partner In Crime"), industrial strength insanity ("Romantic Pyscho") and pitch-black throb-jobs ("Eternity Is Burning").

Review: Alt-rock, electro and new wave fusionist IAMX - real name Chris Corner) - has spent the last 16 years building his reputation via stylish, synthesizer-laden works. It's something of a surprise then to find that "Echo Echo", his latest album, dispatches with electronics almost entirely. Instead, it sees him serve up radically reworked, re-recorded acoustic versions of tracks from his bulging catalogue built around softly-spun folk guitars, simmering strings and sparse orchestration. For those used to his very particular leftfield electro-pop sound, it takes a little getting used to, but it's well worth persevering: in some instances, his songs sound even better (and certainly more fragile and emotive) when they're delivered in this most traditional manner.

Review: Those with a passion for early new age music should know all about Iasos, a California-based musician who has been serving up deliciously meditative ambient and new age albums since 1975. Here he offers up a new edition of his sought-after 1978 set "Angelic Music", a warm, dreamy and luscious blend of slowly shifting chords, sustained notes and slow-burn melodies that increase in prominence as each of the two 30-minute tracks progress. Interestingly the versions showcased here are longer than the edited versions initially released, with the flipside - where recordings of crickets rise and fall around swelling synthesizer chords - being our pick of a very strong pair.

Review: Way back in 1975, two albums slipped out that would effectively establish the synthesizer-fired "new age" sound. Arguably the more important - and better quality - of the two was "Inter-dimensional Music", the debut LP from California-based musician Iasos. Here reissued on vinyl for the first time in a decade, the superb set combines drowsy ambient chords, gentle organ melodies and other subtle instrumental flourishes (bass guitar, pedal steel, lazy electric guitar solos) with field recordings of lapping waves, babbling brooks and so on. While new age would become a bit of a cheesy cliche in later years, "Inter-Dimensional Music" is a superb collection of drifting, meditative tracks that soothe and seduce the senses.

Review: Ryan Hunn AKA Illum Sphere has impressively grown and matured as a producer since making his debut on Fat City back in 2009. His 2014 debut album, Ghosts of Then & Now, was something of a watershed moment, tempering his experimental, bass-heavy dancefloor compositions with a newfound love of cinematic sounds. Glass arguably moves further in the latter direction. While there are some nods towards his club-ready past - see the 4/4 shuffle of "Fall Into Water", or the moody electro bounce of "Fuel The Fire" - it's not the beats that dominate, but rather his evocative chord progressions and IDM style melodies. In fact, it's the more sanguine, ambient inspired cuts, of which there are numerous, that really stand out.

Review: When it comes to crafting memorable electronica, Malka Spigel and sometime Wire member Colin Newman are old hands. The duo released their first album as Immersion way back in 1994. This fourth full-length follows on from 2016's critically acclaimed Analogue Creatures Living On An Island and shares some stylistic similarities. Like that set, Sleepless contains numerous nods to 1970s krautrock (particularly Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh), alongside detectable looks in the direction of laidback ambient techno, shoegaze, tactile downtempo grooves, melodic Balearic moments and the kind of hybrid analogue/electronic soundscapes that defy easy categorization. Throughout, the duo push mood and melody to the fore; as a result, the album is deliciously soft-focus and dreamy, even at its' most full-throttle and up-tempo.

Review: Makoto Inoue and Yasushi Yamashita have been working together as Inoyama Land since the late 1970s, periodically delivered fine ambient albums that are rarely seen outside of Japan. Yet the bulk of their work has been commissioned pieces meant for theatrical shows, museum displays, sound installations and Japanese buildings (what is known as "environmental music" - a higher class of piped-in lift music, basically). It's these unreleased commissioned pieces that are showcased here. They're really good, too, drifting between chiming new age bliss, creepy electronic soundscapes, and the kind of blissful, electronic-meets-acoustic fare that has always been a hallmark of Japan's vibrant ambient scene.

Review: Ionnalee's 2018 debut album "Everyone Afraid To Be Forgotten" was superb, so hopes are high for the artist's similarly minded sequel. "Remember The Future" is a little bolder, shinier and more upbeat than its predecessor, though stylistically it still sounds like a 21st century update of Kate Bush's distinctive early '80s sound circa "The Dreaming" and "Hounds of Love". It's a dreamy, ethereal and otherworldly take on electronic pop that's always alluring and often memorable. The album's plentiful highlights include "Some Body", the superb Zola Jesus collaboration "Matters" - a deep, bubbly and intoxicating affair - and "Mysteries Of Love", an echoing, Royksopp-produced cover of a song from David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti's "Blue Velvet" movie soundtrack.

Review: Alan Myson makes a very welcome return with this new body of work under his Ital Tek moniker. As a staple of Planet Mu since his debut in 2008, his style has grown on its own terms while retaining a core identity. Myson's instinct for looming, cinematic melodies is maintained to great effect, coming through in abundance on driving-yet-beatless opener "Chamber Music". It's not all poised and refined though - "Deadhead" slaps with a darkside heft that nods to the heavier side of Myson's musical roots. Likewise "Bladed Terrain", which has a strong whiff of synthwave coursing through its veins thanks to those buzzing leads. With towering production values and strong melodic themes throughout, this is Ital Tek through and through, but equally a strong step on for a staggeringly skilled and ever-evolving artist.
