Review: If you're new to Arca then it's time to catch up. The Venezuelan instrumentalist, rapper, composer, singer, producer and DJ is nothing short of a tour de force, and has been blowing crowds away with a blend of experimental dance and electronic music since emerging in 2011. Packing beauty, attitude, and wild ideas into a seamless blend of noises, in live format you can expect sets to run the gamut from Neo-gabber to sleazy Latin trap, and we really do recommend experiencing that.

Kick II is the second instalment in a four-album odyssey that defines exactly what we're talking about, albeit stopping short of the breakneck beats she can unleash on stage. Nevertheless, the combination of avant-garde, reggaeton, pop, cumbia, smoky downbeat, and deconstructed club music is powerful and impossible to ignore. Not that anyone would ever want to.

Amok
Review: By now, you should all know the story of Atoms for Peace, the new all-star leftfield rock outfit founded by Thom Yorke and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Amok is the five-piece's full-length debut, following a couple of well-received singles on XL and 50 Weapons. While there are obvious similarities with the path Radiohead have taken over recent years - curious beats influenced by dubstep and IDM, haunting soundscapes and intoxicating compositions - there's far greater warmth and vibrancy to the songs than some of Yorke's other projects. Ultimately, it sounds like what it is: a bunch of experimental-minded mates getting together to make music. It comes highly recommended.

Review: 'Crazy Itch Radio' certainly scratches the spot, with Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton swerving from all-out drama on the operatic intro straight into the jet-packed kaleidoscopic pop of the future hit single 'Hush Boy' which features live collaborator Vula Malinga, last heard on 'Oh My Gosh'. Rammed up next, 'Take Me Back To Your House' is a sexy, energetic moment of what they call 'banjo house' - the only new tune they've been playing on their current European tour. There's also Balkan folk woven into vocals from Swedish pop sensation Robyn on 'Hey U', a hyper grime tune cussing vain boys from East London's Lady Marga, titled 'Run 4 Cover', and 'Lights Go Down', a Wil Malone-scored beauty with legendary British singer Linda Lewis. Basement Jaxx are currently wowing huge audiences around Europe on tour with Robbie Williams and will be playing their own headline arena shows in the UK before the end of the year.

Review: XL Recordings founder Richard Russell has been rather busy of late. First came the publication of his memoir, "Liberation Through Hearing", and now this: the follow-up to his 2017 debut album as Everything Is Recorded. Like its predecessor, "Friday Forever" was produced and mixed by Russell but also contains contributions from a wide range of artists including Ghostface KIllah, Penny Rimbaud, A.K. Paul, James Massiah, Infinite Coles, Irish singer-songwriters Maria Somerville and Kean Kavanagh, and a host of new-breed British MCs. There's a concept behind it - the sound-tracking of a night out and the weekend that follows - with the music brilliantly joining the dots between hip-hop, neo-classical, soul, proto house, reggae, jazz and much, much more. That it not only holds together but also makes perfect sense is testament to Russell's growing skill as a producer.

Review: It may have taken a while - his massive debut single 'Hyph Mngo' was released 12 years ago - but Joy Orbison has finally got round to recording his debut album. It's a highly personal affair, peppered with speech snippets from various family members (including his mum, dad, sister, cousins and famous uncle, Ray Keith). It's a narrative device that works well, providing a unifying thread throughout a woozy, musically eclectic concoction that sees the now veteran UK producer give his distinct spin on ambient, slow house, two-step garage, deep house, post-dubstep beats, dubbed-out soundscapes, British bass music, experimental electronica, cutting-edge deep D&B and much more besides. It's perhaps not the all-out assault on the dancefloor some may have expected, but it is a genuinely brilliant and entertaining album.

Review: Pop duo Josh Lloyd-Watson & Tom McFarland, or simply J & T as they are known, realise their second album for pioneering independent label, XL. Since the pair's debut self-titled release back in 2013 the group has expanded to something around seven members and following a slew of singles and EPs (inclusive of a Soulwax remix) the band are now bursting with fresh life and colour. Take "Heavy, California" for example, a sing-a-long pop number that's bright and cheery enough to make you want to skip through the streets with a dandelion in your hair regardless of the season. "Cherry", the other track thrown around online, sees Jungle live up to their Neo Soul genre tag, and with 11 more tracks to explore, maybe they'll even find hit that second Mercury Prize nomination.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

In the four years since his debut album as King Krule, south Londoner Archy Marshall has been busy as solo artist, collaborator, rapper and producer. He now returns with 'The OOZ', an expansive record that's densely packed with disparate musical influence, dark and personal storytelling, and Marshall's distinctive sneering charisma, all framed in his usual backdrop of seedy urban vaudeville. It's an incredibly layered album that offers the listener a guided tour through this disturbing and decayed landscape of atmospheric smoky jazz, grunge and ambient. Even at nineteen tracks with a runtime of just over an hour, The OOZ is something of an epic that never feels overdrawn, by dint of its richly illustrative, engulfing and transportive nature.

Review: There are few signs of 'difficult second album syndrome' to be found on "Through Water", Lapsley's confident and assured follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2016 debut "Long Way Home". This time round the former teenage prodigy has written and produced pretty much everything on the album, delivering a suite of songs that effortlessly blur the boundaries between glacial electronica, off-kilter synth-pop, R&B and folktronica. There are some moments of real beauty scattered throughout - see the rather fine "Leeds Liverpool Canal" for starters - while the way her distinctive vocals are matched by inventive and enjoyable musical arrangements is mighty impressive. Sure, there's nothing as rush inducing as club hit "Operator", but what's here is every bit as alluring.

Review: UK bass-heavy deep tech? Outsider rave? Call it what you want, but XL's mission to reconnect with the UK underground is certainly putting in an effort, if recent releases by Zomby, Special Request and Powell are anything to go by. This time they tap Berlin's rising star Hugo Massien. First track "Kontrol" is main room house for mega raves with its massive, razor sharp bassline and repeated refrain of 'mind control!" certain to fuel dancefloor euphoria. "Better Let Her" rewinds back to the early evening, warming things up in nice style on this smooth deep house number. On the flip things fast forward to the peak time on the adrenalised "All Night" featuring 'that' Moodymann sample from RBMA; will it be another Oliver $ moment? Finally "Fahrenheit" is a dark tech house killer reminiscent of early Jamie Jones. The young producer has seemingly emerged out of nowhere, but already on to big things.

Review: It was when Makaya McCraven linked up with International Anthem around 2015 he became an artist transcending the jazz scene's tangle of singers and players. Since then he's evolved his craft from album to album, project to project, reaching this undeniable achievement of a record that places him at the forefront of modern jazz. Nearly seven years in the making, In These Times is the product of McCraven's striving to create a personal stamp, leaning in on his own rhythmic language of time-signature trickery and unusual arrangements, steering large-scale orchestral ensembles and elevating his craft in every way he can. For all the considered science behind the sound, it lands as an incredible natural experience full of cascading drums, ascendant flutes, lilting strings and a whole cornucopia of talented musicians playing to a striking creative vision.

Review: Despite both enjoying successful careers, brothers Truss and Tessela have rarely worked together. It's perhaps for this reason that Arla, the debut EP from their collaborative Overmono project, has been so hotly anticipated. There are plenty of highlights amongst the five tracks - two of which are short-run skits - with the duo offering the right balance between experimental futurism, and good, old-fashioned dancefloor nous. Check, for example, the drowsy, undulating synth refrains and dense, tribal-influenced drums of "Lockner Union", the near-symphonic "Winged" - where stretched-out strings and mournful pads are underpinned by a stucatto rhythm - and the restless, rhythmic ambience of impressive closer "Programmer".

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

God bless XL Recordings. The UK label has been at the forefront of boundary pushing music since its inception, and almost 35 years remains a seal of quality. A constant source of inspiring surprises and new sonic experiences. The kind of organisation that will take a punt on British polymath Jai Paul's demo album, which, by all accounts, is pretty hard to describe, let alone define. More so, the type of team that would, eight years earlier, support and release one of the artist's earliest songs, 'BTSTU'. Coming full circle, that tune closes this collection of stuff produced around the same time, all of which was going to form the debut album, Bait Ones. One low-quality CD-R of the work stolen and then leaked online later, and the artist stepped away from music until the end of the last decade, when this "perfectly imperfect" LP was finally allowed to see the light of day. A lo fi, glitchy, trippy, granular, sexy sound that owes as much to hip hop, pop and r&b as experimental noise, ambient dub, and electronic soul.

Review: A decade in the making, and then some, Jack Penate's third album is finally ready, with a little help from Paul Epworth, former Spankrock member and jazz percussionist Alex Epton, and Inflo. The canvas painted is both broad and coherent, taking in influences such as disco, folk and classic pop, which may sound disparate but, in this form at least, feels like a bizarrely natural combination. Testament to the artist, tracks like "Murder" - with their bumbling dancefloor rhythm and power synth line - sit comfortably between "Cipralex"'s delicate plucked acoustic guitars, falsetto lyrical delivery and rumbling low end; and the epic piano arpeggiations of heartstring-pulling instrumental "Gemini", with its samples of Penate's grandfather, Mervyn Peake, as read by his uncle Fabian. Elsewhere, "Round and Round" could be labelled lo-fi broken rave balladry, while "Swept To The Sky" closes out on a powerful and uplifting declaration of love.

Insomniac (6:57)
Should've Been A Drummer (7:02)
Review: With recent releases from Zomby and Special Request to their name, XL Recordings seem to be returning to their dancefloor roots in a big way. Here, they welcome back Diagonal boss Oscar Powell, who follows up his recent "Sylvester Stallone" 12" with two more certified dancefloor bombs featuring the widely publicized sampled sounds of Steve Albini. "Insomniac" is particularly potent, drawing on EBM and industrial for inspiration. The result a distorted, vocal-laden, punky affair, like DAF or Front 242 given a 21st century makeover. Flipside "Should've Been A Drummer" is a similarly full-throttle affair - admittedly with more of a standard 4.4 swing - with ragged analogue electronics and the kind of grit-laden sonic textures for which he's renowned.

Review:  The latest of Radiohead's reissues is an utter avalanche of material. 'Kid A Mnesia' itself is an 'album mashup' between their two albums Kid A and Amnesia; both projects are remastered and released side-by-side on the same LP. It doesn't stop there: for the fanatics, there's an exclusive third disc, Kid Amnesiae, which contains formerly unheard material both recording sessions, as well as Kid Amnesiette, a cassette of B-sides. This ultra-deluxe edition is, decidedly, one for the ultra-fans. Besides the radical electronic fever dreams making up both projects, this version contains the never-before-heard song 'If You Say The Word' on the bonus CD. Remastered on vinyl and cut at half the speed of the original LP, it's an audiophile's banquet. Also watch out for the exclusive booklet of drawings that come with the special edition of this special edition.
