Review: Fresh from launching their Voam imprint via an EP of clanking, mind-mangling industrial techno workouts, Blawan and Pariah don the Karenn alias once more for their first full-length outing. In keeping with their fuzzy, hardware-based approach, "Grapefruit Regret" is fiendishly forthright - a buzzing, crackling collection of club cuts built around armour plated kick drums, creepy and dystopian aural textures, chunky basslines and hypnotic, opaque lead lines. Occasionally it sounds like the product of two guys banging bits of metal against towering Brutalist buildings, at others the breathless soundtrack to illicit raves in car parks beneath crumbling Soviet-era municipal buildings. Throughout, it delivers some of the most intense and intoxicating techno jams of the year.

  1. Caterpillar (6:43)
  2. Frogspawn (5:38)
  3. One On One (4:39)
Review: Considering his prominent presence in the modern techno scene, it's sometimes surprising just how few solo releases Pariah has put out since breaking through more than 10 years ago. A lot of his time is taken up with his Karenn collaboration with Blawan though, and together they've shaped out the sound of their Voam label with a string of EPs and the 2019 album Grapefruit Regret. Now it's time for Pariah to step out on his own, and he's presenting a sound which aligns with the playful twists on techno Karenn are known for, but there is a different energy at work here, too. Slightly more measured than the madcap stylings of his collabs, on Caterpillar Pariah takes us into a precision tooled techno dungeon without losing that spark that makes so much of his prior work so hugely popular.

Thermal Cycler
Cat: VOAM 007. Rel: 17 Aug 21
  1. Thermal Cycler (4:41)
  2. Taxon (7:54)
  3. Pica Pica (6:48)
  4. Vokoka (6:04)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Stefan Junge and his Piska Power project, which previously appeared on Aussie imprint Power Station via two EPs of throbbing, industrial and EBM-influenced insanity. There's plenty to enjoy on Jung's first outing on Voam. Check first pulsating, modular-sounding opener 'Thermal Cycler', where wayward, mind-altering motifs and fizzing electronics ride a locked-in techno beat, before admiring the thickset late-night sleaze of the similarly brain-melting 'Taxon'. Over on the flip, 'Pica Pica' peppers a breathless, out-there rhythm with trippy electronics, while 'Vococa' is an oddball, pitched-down EBM number full of robotic vocals, strange sounds and wonky beats.

Kiln (12")
Cat: VOAM 008. Rel: 03 Nov 21
  1. Kiln (5:51)
  2. Thermal Decomposition (5:56)
  3. Volatile Substance (6:20)
  4. Solid Residue (5:15)
Review: More contorted techno derivatives courtesy of Blawan and Pariah's new Voam imprint, this time from veteran producer Hannes Stenstrom aka SSTROM, who will take you on an intense style of brain dance with the Klin EP. Opening with the jagged hyperspeed pulsations of the title track, leading into the noisy and menacing IDM experiment 'Thermal Decomposition'. Over on the flip, we really tripped on the strobed-out hypnotic techno of 'Volatile Substance' before getting sucker punched by the pummeling industrial strength of 'Solid Residue'.
