Nervous Smile EP
Nervous Smile EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TS19 01. Rel: 07 May 19
  1. Nervouse Smile (7:13)
  2. Nervouse Smile (Acidulant remix) (5:09)
  3. Nervouse Smile (Alero May remix) (5:57)
Review: Transparent Sound label boss Orson Bramley steps up to his long-standing imprint with a new guise, Empty Orchestra, which showcases yet more of his crafty, delicately executed take on electro. "Nervouse Smile" is an impeccable study of the style, loaded with intricate machine funk elements from twitchy drum programming to ethereal pads, and of course a healthy dose of funk for good measure. As well as the original version, there are additional remixes courtesy of rising stars Acidulant and Alero May, the latter of which has an especially infectious bassline ripple and some smart key change moments for a dynamic end result.

Atmosphere (reissue)
Cat: TRANS 002. Rel: 16 Oct 20
  1. Atmosphere (7:20)
  2. Remanisance (6:26)
  3. Remanisance (remix) (6:48)
Review: Transparent Sound came back with some big reissues last year and finally continue that purple patch with a new serving of some serious acid techno from 1996. The title track kicks off this welcome package with blistering electro drum work and manic 303 lines. It's a scintillating cut of crispy hits and alien energy, then 'Remanisance' takes us back to broken beat heaven. The synths are manic and cosmic and the drums are crunchy, and the pull between the two is simply lovely. A final remix of 'Remanisance' skews it through another acid filter with curling lines and hammering drums working you into a frenzy.

Night & Day (reissue)
Night & Day (reissue) (blue marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: TRANS 008. Rel: 11 Aug 21
  1. Night & Day (5:36)
  2. Solar (5:43)
  3. Scratch & See (5:45)
  4. Sound Splash (6:31)
Review: Orson Bramley's longstanding electro alias Transparent Sound looks back into the vaults for this long-awaited reissue of their cult 1999-release EP 'Night & Day'. As always with Bramley's Bognor collective, the aesthetics are crisp glacial and pure machine soul as we range from the Detroitian essence of the tight track to the much more angular and synthetic bubbles of the finale 'Sound Splash'. Elsewhere we're sent into space with the anti-gravitational vibes of 'Solar' and the gnarled acid bubble funk of 'Scratch & See'. 22 years and still sounding future; cop this while you can.
