Review: Lucky Brown continues his relentless quest to keep the spirit of deep funk alive with this latest LP drop on his spiritual home of Tramp Records. The Seattle funkateer has been credited with keeping authenticity and gritty flair at the heart of his sound and that comes through by the bucketload on this essential record from the archives of his band The Funk Revolution. Pulled from the heady, spiritual living room sessions from which his 2011 Tramp debut was compiled, this is the first half of a veritable feast of hot and heavy jams from a band locked into something just beyond their comprehension, like all the best funk should be.

Givin' Me The Blues
Review: We like stories here at Juno HQ, especially ones as wild, funky and freaky as Roy's. The late, great jazz man Porter collaborated with the likes of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, survived wild drug addictions, been in and out of prison and is widely recognised as one of the chief instigators of 'future jazz'. His Sound Machine contributions can be found at the latter end of his discography. Mellowing somewhat with age, this selection shows more signs of jazz funk than the more experimental stuff that really put him on the map. Soothing, easy-going and sometimes heart-punching poignant and reflective, this is a fine introduction to of one of modern music's most unsung characters.

Review: On the debut album by Sunborn (fka. The KutiMangoes!), the psychic Danish sextet dig deep into the contours of the improv form and the hybrid electronic-jazz live jam, asking - what connects us as human beings? Meeting the world and connecting through music has been a vital mission for the band from day one, and Sunborn - channelling the fact that humanity is united under the same sun - once more aims thematically to bridge the gaps between people and ideas of different backgrounds and cultures. Naturally, the sound of this album is instrumental and unhegemonic, reaching across stylistic divides for a shuffling, transcending collective grasp towards the celestial ball of fire that hangs up above.

Review: And it's another touchdown for Tramp! Adding to their respected list of compendiums such as Praise Poems and Feeling Nice, the German archivists score once again with this powerful and far ranging collection of cuts from the 70s/80 and the feels are strong: from raw floor stomps of Empulse's epic juicy funk vibe "Anytime" and Ron Henderson's head nodding "Boogie Man" power to pure yacht sailing soul such as Jeffords Brothers' "Sights & Sounds" and the come-to-bed soul of Silky Vincent Group's "Missing You". Featuring many first time reissues and a full spectrum of sounds from the era, Tramp wins again.

Mel-O-Madnezz - "Beautiful Day" (3:23)
Review: The prestigious Movements series, like all its predecessors on Tramp contains rare groove nuggets recorded between the early 1960s and the late 1970s. Over a hundred great unknown songs have been re-released on the first eight volumes in the series, the majority of which can not be found elsewhere and this is is no exception. There are two cover versions: "Fever" by Gee Gee Shinn & The Boogie Kings and "I'm A Woman" by Connie Kaye Trio. Bus Brown, Earl Demus and Chuck Finney remain on the same vibe - their contributions are slightly jazzier. Chick Willis' gut-wrenching "Sometime Soon" and recordings by Australia, J.R. and Joe Akens are beautiful examples of privately produced soul from the 1970s. The latin-soul of "Cho Cho San" by Hummingbird 4 takes the sound in another direction for the next three tunes, highlighted by one more stunning cover version: Oscar Brown Jr.'s "Brother, Where Are You?". The album closes with some pre-disco tracks from the late 1970s: Mel-O-Madnezz' "What You Getting High On" and Hot Cakes' cover of "Harlem Shuffle".

Review: Between the late 1960s and early 1980s, Philadelphia's Curtis R Staten ran CRS Records as an outlet for his productions. It was never a prolific imprint, though the 15 singles and 2 albums the imprint is known to have manufactured remain sought-after sides and sets among Northern Soul, gospel, rhythm and blues and deep funk collectors. This fine TRAMP Records compilation tells the story of the label, gathering together highlights from the likes of George Johnson Jr. & The Mondells, Bonnie Blanchard, Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine, The Zodiacs and Midnight Madness. This limited edition version also includes a bonus seven-inch single of Blanchard's sublime Northern Soul classic "You're The Only One".

Review: TRAMP Records' compilations are invariably excellent, with the German imprint often choosing to ignore tried-and-tested tunes in favour of a mixture of sought-after rarities, slept-on gems and unusual, off-kilter recordings. Their latest collection, which focuses on "deep, soulful jazz and funk" from the '70s, keeps up this entertaining and ear-pleasing trend. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the sun-soaked samba-jazz brilliance of Stevens, Scott & Dee's "Brazilica", and the low-slung rhythm and blues shuffle of Jerry Sandifer's "Low Down Soul", to the folksy, Rotary Connection style folk-jazz goodness of "An Empty Wind" by Blackdog and the righteous release of the Kats' Hammond-heavy "Wear Me Out".

Review: Tramp's Praise Poems series has given rise to many majestic moments of funk, with the best of each release often finding their way on their own 7"s. The eighth volume sure has many tracks worth of that treatment, starting with the driving jazz of 'A Perfect Day' from Bobby Cole and then taking in high speed 60s workouts from Helmut Pistor's Big Rock Jazz Band and more Americana styled cuts like 'If You're So Smart' from Gemini. Elsewhere are more sentimental thinkers from The Menagerie, and a particular highlight from Ron & Sally Price with their gorgeously lo-fi and aching 'California Feeling.'

Review: Tramp Records' Can You Feel It series, which here reaches its fourth instalment, has always been one of the more reliable sources of obscure, hard-to-find modern soul and boogie, with many tracks plucked from the vaults of tiny labels or private press releases. Naturally the selections this time round are spot on and will be unfamiliar to all but a handful of dedicated diggers. Highlights include (but are in no way limited to) the flash-fried, solo-heavy psych-funk of Vantage Point's 'All Night', the disco rush of Keith lowery's 'Super Dude', the low-slung, War-esque brilliance of 'You Shake 'Em Things' by Synod, the horn-heavy jauntiness of Street Life 80's 'Steps On A Cloud', and the killer boogie-funk badness of Ditto Memo's 'Upside Down'.

Review: Oh yes, it's the fourth edition of Tramp's mighty Feeling Nice series, proudly presented by Daniel Wanders and Hermann Jahn. The duo are as persistent as they are talented at compiling music series with a socio-political edge, always hinting at some sort of cultural tension. With this new piece of work, they've decided to showcase the deeper side of funk, the sort you wouldn't have found on Top Of The Pops. More than anything, this is a marvellous collector's item, filled with tunes from peeps like Mr Clean & The Cleansers, Jim Pipkin, Al Sinclair, and many other artists from the late 60s who were not as fortunate in their domination of the mainstream as other singers and producers. A mighty fun pack for any serious funk enthusiast.
