Philadelphia Mambo (warehouse find, slight sleeve wear)
Philadelphia Mambo (5:05)
Girl From Ipanema (5:04)
Review: The dusty-fingered diggers behind TRAMP Records have unearthed something rather special here: an unreleased, full-length recording of a live performance by hitherto unheralded combo Afro Blue Persuasion, an Afro-Cuban Jazz band fronted by Bay Area stalwart Ulysses Crockett. The full album, "Live at Haight Levels", will be released in 2019. As a taster, TRAMP has served up two tight edits of epic album tracks. "Philadelphia Mambo" is particularly potent, with breezy piano riffs and inspired saxophone solos rising above and distinctive mambo groove and tons of additional hand percussion. The flipside features their loose, solo-laden interpretation of bossanova classic "Girl From Ipanema". It's pretty darn good, though lacks the sheer ebullience of the more dancefloor-focused A-side.

Bonnie Blanchard, Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine - "You're The Only One" (3:02)
Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine - "Right On Time" (3:30)
Review: For their latest must-check rare soul reissue, German crate diggers TRAMP Records take us back to 1969 and the sole single from Philadelphia outfit Andy Aaron & the Mean Machine. A-side "You're The Only One" is a superb chunk of bass-heavy soul full of energetic drumming, fuzzy horn motifs, inspired lead vocals by Bonnie Blanchard and sax solos from none other than Grover Washington (then a young musician and member of the Mean Machine). Equally as potent is instrumental flipside "Right On Time", which is a riotous funk workout that boasts more lung-busting solos from an on form Washington.

Hurry Back (2:29)
Here's Where I Get Off (2:43)
Review: American rock band Atilla and The Huns hail from Wisconsin and formed in 1964. The group consists of drummer Rich Legault, bassist Denny Lewan and singer/guitarist Mike Peace as well as rhythm guitarist Ben Wiesneiwski and they became a big hit on the local circuit. They put out only three two trackers between 1965 and 1969 and this newly assembled 7" plucks one track each from two of the now hard to find and pricey originals. 1967's 'Hurry Back' is a rolling funk number with bulky drums and twanging riffs that oozes 60s cool. 1969's 'Here's Where I Get Off' is a more sentimental roller with slightly deeper grooves and more lovestruck lyrics. Both will do well with Northern Soul lovers.

I'm Growing Old (3:17)
Review: Originally released on his 1967 album A Point Of View, Bobby Cole's 'A Perfect Day' is a stirring slice of vocal jazz which surges with urgency thanks to his virtuoso piano playing. There's a sadness behind his lyrics, and it creeps in around the edges of his musical chops, but the pace of the track gives it an infectious buoyancy. That's certainly not the case on the B side, where Cole's malaise comes to the fore on what was the album's closing track, 'I'm Growing Old'. As you might expect, it's a downcast reflection on ageing, sung with acerbic honesty and played with heart.

Money Tree (2:34)
Review: Strap in for a super rough and ready ride through raw as coleslaw funk here from the Tramp label. This classic slice of original Los Angeles funk, 'Booty Whip' has feature on a label comp before but never on its own slice of vinyl. It is here presented as an unreleased acetate version and features some wild hammering on the piano, big, boisterous drums, expressive horns and guttural vocals. On the flip is a tune that is just as good in 'Money Tree.' The vocals are again sleazy and unrefined in all the right ways, with twanging guitars, psyched-out guitars and a big wall of sound.

Let's Run Away From The World (3:15)
Review: Tramp Records has a good relationship with obscure Illinois soul man Wayne Carter. Back in 2013 they put out a compilation of his near impossible-to-find singles and here reissue arguably his most rare and sought-after 45 (for proof, check how much original private press copies change hands for online). With its meandering Hammond organ solos, heavyweight rhythm section, fuzzy horns and impassioned vocals, "Peter In Or Out" is a genuine deep funk bomb. On the flip you'll find the more laidback and groovy "Let's Run Away From The World", in which backing band the Organ Twisters provide a fitting backing for Carter's impassioned plea to a lover to "at last be free".

Review: One of the leading cuts from Tramps' Moments Vol 9 collection, Connie Kaye Trio's super rare "Woman" playfully riffs on Peggy Lee's "Fever" riff but comes with a completely subverted message and mood behind the lyrics and a powerful northern soul stomp. Strident, striking and full of drive, this special 45 release has been long overdue. Catch it while you can.

Make My Love A Hurting Thing (2:43)
Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community are a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45 RPM format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. Need a party starter? Get this!

Review: The Echomen's song 'Let's Get Together' first appeared on the third volume of the Movements compilation series many many years ago. Now repressed via Tramp, it's a soul-swing anthem for positive change, calling on people young and old to make peace with their own communities. It rails directly against individualism, opting for humility; the B-side 'Talk Is Cheap' echoes a similar sentiment, but within the context of a relationship.

Review: The small but potent Tramp label is back with more irresistible gems from Frederic Rabold Crew. The bad was formed in 1968 and went on to soon become big names in the German jazz scene of their era. The crew travelled a lot throughout Europe and between 1972 and 1980 dropped an impressive six studio albums. It is 1975's Open House record that is pillaged for the two singles presented here after they have been served up as part of Tramp's spiritual jazz compilation album Peace Chant which is as worthy of your attention as this 7".

This time out it is Lucky Brown's Crawdad Farmers aka The Funk Revolution who serve up 'Space Dream,' a track named to commemorate a soulfunk masquerade party trumpet player Lucky Brown aka Joel Ricci threw at a Bellingham Washington music venue many years ago. Ma(r)l Sehen (3:16)
Review: Tramp Records has stayed close to home for this release, reissuing two killer cuts from the 1981 album "Mittwochs In Marl" album by Tyree Glenn Jr. While he is American - his father, Glenn senior, was famously Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong's trombonist - Glenn Jr had moved to Germany (where he still resides) around the time that the album was recorded. Lead cut "Superbad" is a genuinely heavy, full-throttle funk beast, with Glenn Jr doing his best James Brown impression over an insatiable groove and rousing sax solos. "Ma(r)l Sehen", on the other hand, is a much more breezy affair - an instrumental jazz-funk outing rich in dueling sax and electric piano solos.

Little Sister (part 1) (3:02)
Little Sister (part 2 - instrumental) (2:58)
Review: Some sizzling deep funk business here from TRAMP Records, as the venerable German reissue imprint offers a fresh pressing of an obscure 1975 single from Walt Maddox's Super M label. It was Maddox who produced "Little Sister", though little is known about the band that recorded it. The A-side "Part 1" vocal version is superb. It features addictive group vocals, prominent flute solos and the kind of wah-wah-heavy, flash-fried deep funk grooves that were all the rage at the time. The flipside "Part 2 (Instrumental)" mix strips away the lead vocal, emphasizes the groove further and gives greater prominence to the flute and organ parts. It's great, too, though we still prefer the A-side.

Review: The Hi Fly Orchestra means all-acoustic jazz with a totally infectious and heavy dance groove that always gets the crowd on the floor. The group has an ear for the great sound of 60's jazz, Latin and samba. There's a good variety of styles on the album. It's a melting pot of funky Latin tunes, driving basslines, original compositions with a strong Brazilian touch, pulsating beats and percussion breaks reminiscent of 60's and 70's sounds that Tarantino would have used for the "Jackie Brown" soundtrack, if it had only been recorded back then. There's even an unusual cover of "Soul Bossa Nova", the Quincy Jones classic.

Take The 'A' Plane (3:32)
Review: Tramp Records look to their own rich soul compilation Movements Volume 9 for this one. It is a single take from it by the Hot Cakes gang. 'Harlem Shuffle Theme' is bongo laced and lively funky breakbeat magic with tumbling bass. It's bristling and brilliant even before the playful vocals come in and encourage you to move. Flip it over and you'll find the even more funky 'Take The A Plane,' with tightly knotted bass riffs, big lead horn work and natty chords fleshing out the rhythms. Two red hot dance floor burners for sure.

The Jack Mod Kick (2:40)
Review: TRAMP Records' latest must-have "45" is a reissue of a killer seven-inch single that regularly changes hands for hundreds of pounds online. There's little info available about the artist or record, besides the fact that it was recorded and released in Norfolk, Virginia way back in 1992. A-side "Don't Wake Me Up" is a delicious chunk of fuzzy, heartfelt soul rich in leisurely beats, glistening guitars and an impassioned female lead vocal. Flipside "The Jack Mod Kick" is a genuine dancefloor stomper - a hazy slab of heavyweight funk full of skittish drum breaks, razor-sharp guitar licks and high-octane bass guitar.

Review: If you managed to catch the Natural Resources II compilation album then you might have, rather like us, decided that the best track on it was from Walt Jenkins. His super funky 'How Does Your Garden Grow' is a great bit of work that now gets its own standalone pressing on vital thanks to the mighty good people over at German's leading funk and soul label, Tramp. An original is hard to find on 45rpm so this is a godsend for anyone who wants it and as well as the aching soul beauty of the original, this one comes backed with the slower, more jazzy and laid back cut that is 'T.G.I.F.'

Review: The late James Kelly Duhon hailed from Beaumont in Texas, and in the late1960s he was in a group known as The Ascots. He put out a small but well formed selection of tunes and those included the two pressed up here to this limited 45rpm. 'So Trusting' is a big number with noted bass and big orchestra string stabs. On the backside is 'So Far Down' which actually got a national release on Mainstream Records while Duhon was still touring. It's a deeply affecting bit of soul musing on the lack of employment and a longing for the good times.

Review: If you're a disco, boogie and modern soul nut on the look out for obscure gems, we'd suggest taking a serious look at this excellent compilation from the dusty-fingered crate diggers at TRAMP Records. The 17 included tracks are not only all rare, little known and exceedingly hard to find, but also of a dizzyingly high standard. Highlights are plentiful - take your pick, basically - but our current favourites include the deluxe instrumental disco shuffle of Ambros Seelos Orchester's "In Orbit", the slap-bass propelled disco-funk heaviness of Mr Maurice's "Love Me", the spacey P-funk/boogie business of Crown's "Intercession" and the tropical-tinged modern soul of Grayson Street's harmonica solo-sporting "Medicine Man".

Steppin Down (2:37)
Heart Complication (2:46)
Review: Barely available in its original format, Frederick Knight's first - and most highly sought after - release from the late 60s is a jacking, upstart bit of funky soul that is as relevant today as it was back then. "Stepping Down" carries an infectious groove, carried by wild organs and driving percussion all the way from beginning to the end, but it's "Heart Complication" that we've been waiting endlessly for - a slow and chilling soul ballad with Knight's seductive laments cutting deep and wide. Super!

Review: The Kutimangoes are an interesting proposition. The six-piece, seemingly based in Copenhagen, switch instruments between tracks - from Rhodes to trombone, sax to percussion, and so on - and cite Fela Kuti, Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman as their primary influences. This debut album showcases their unique style, which moves from loose, horn-heavy Afrobeat ("Fire") and dense afro-jazz ("Something Yellow"), to looser, more melancholic flavours ("Pass It On") and even a dash of humid tropical jazz (the superb "Desert Moon"). The CD version also boasts a couple of heavier dancefloor remixes not present on the vinyl version, with the stompin' rework of "Song For Fela" standing out.

Review: Denmark's premier Afro-Jazz outlet The KutiMangoes have pressed their first ever 7" including 2014s 'Fire', the intro track to their debut album 'Afro-Fire', and 2019s 'Money Is The Curse' from their 3rd album 'Afrotropism' in a brand new mix just for this 45 rpm disc. With similar, grand brass riffs both of the six-piece's tracks are just a small window into a bold catalogue of afro-jazz and swing, with 'Money Is The Curse's quick-fingered brass section sounding almost like a distorted electronic beat - they are just playing *that* fast. An incredible double-single, with uplifting Afro-futurist sounds as a stage for the brass and keyboard to really shine. On 'Fire', the vocal stylings of Patrick Kabre give the track an uplifting dancehall vibe that is guaranteed to plaster a smile across your face. It's pure fun, and is an incredible gateway to what The KutiMangoes, and afro-jazz as a whole, have to offer.

Soul Fever (2:49)
A Whole Lotta Lovin' (2:36)
Review: Germany's potent Tramp is back with more well dug out sounds from the funk vaults, this time with the serious heavy Marvelle & The Blue Match at the helm. This two-track 45rpm was first released on Lenny LaCour's Magic Touch label and is one that now fetches a pretty penny on the second hand market. The A-side is a dynamite bit of soul infused funk with guttural vocal cries and scuzzy guitar lines taking you back to the 60s. On the flip, 'A Whole Lotta Lovin' carries on hitting hard with wall-of-sound production and heavy rock riffs underpinned by a killer bassline.
