Review: Over the last couple of years, TRAMP Records has done much to raise awareness of the work of Tyree Glenn Jr, an American rhythm & blues, soul, funk and jazz musician/band leader who has resided in Germany for well over 35 years. Here they continue to pay tribute to him via a first ever retrospective compilation. It begins with a quartet of killer live recordings from his 1978 set with Brain Damage (including fiery covers of tracks by Kool & The Gang and War), then offers up such gems as "Marler Eintopf (Deutsch)", "S.O.S" - previously reissued by TRAMP on a "45" - and his heavyweight James Brown cover that gives the compilation its title, "Superbad". This edition also contains a bonus seven-inch reissue of Glenn's 1964 debut single with the Emotions.

Review: The Hi Fly Orchestra means all-acoustic jazz with a totally infectious and heavy dance groove that always gets the crowd on the floor. The group has an ear for the great sound of 60's jazz, Latin and samba. There's a good variety of styles on the album. It's a melting pot of funky Latin tunes, driving basslines, original compositions with a strong Brazilian touch, pulsating beats and percussion breaks reminiscent of 60's and 70's sounds that Tarantino would have used for the "Jackie Brown" soundtrack, if it had only been recorded back then. There's even an unusual cover of "Soul Bossa Nova", the Quincy Jones classic.

Review: We like stories here at Juno HQ, especially ones as wild, funky and freaky as Roy's. The late, great jazz man Porter collaborated with the likes of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, survived wild drug addictions, been in and out of prison and is widely recognised as one of the chief instigators of 'future jazz'. His Sound Machine contributions can be found at the latter end of his discography. Mellowing somewhat with age, this selection shows more signs of jazz funk than the more experimental stuff that really put him on the map. Soothing, easy-going and sometimes heart-punching poignant and reflective, this is a fine introduction to of one of modern music's most unsung characters.

Review: Since the turn of the millennium, Germany's Tramp Records have been among those labels dictating the rules and forming the state of play in regards to the contemporary funk and soul scene. They've been consistently releasing new talent from all over the globe, and this time they return with the second chapter of the Peace Chant series, a division of the imprint reserved to the cooler, more lean-back kinda jazz-funk. It's not all percussion and moodiness, though, and tracks like "Ain't Gonna Wait Too Long" by Thomas Meloncon add a bit of funk and zest to the equation; other favourites and stand-out moments include the effortlessly soulful "Mystic Sky" by Deep Jazz, and the sexy "Leigh Ann's Dance" by Sheila Landis. Cool, beautiful, and highly recommended.
