Bonnie Blanchard, Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine - "You're The Only One" (3:02)
Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine - "Right On Time" (3:30)
Review: For their latest must-check rare soul reissue, German crate diggers TRAMP Records take us back to 1969 and the sole single from Philadelphia outfit Andy Aaron & the Mean Machine. A-side "You're The Only One" is a superb chunk of bass-heavy soul full of energetic drumming, fuzzy horn motifs, inspired lead vocals by Bonnie Blanchard and sax solos from none other than Grover Washington (then a young musician and member of the Mean Machine). Equally as potent is instrumental flipside "Right On Time", which is a riotous funk workout that boasts more lung-busting solos from an on form Washington.

Mood For Love (feat BG) (2:32)
Let Me Down Easy (feat BG) (3:05)
Review: Straight up steamy, sweaty shake-down soul that - until now - has been rare as hen's teeth. Spotted passing hands for upwards of L500 in the past, we have two storming sides for the price of one: "Mood For Love" is a stomp happy northern soul classic loaded with all the right ingredients; big harmonies, bigger horns and a beat that won't quit. "Let Me Down Easy" didn't achieve anthem status in the same way and has since been the driver for the original pressing's high price. Stick the needle on and you'll know why; powerful Rhodes, life-affirming horns and a gutsy vocal that burns from the inside in the best possible way.

Booty Whip (2:58)
Money Tree (2:34)
Review: Strap in for a super rough and ready ride through raw as coleslaw funk here from the Tramp label. This classic slice of original Los Angeles funk, 'Booty Whip' has feature on a label comp before but never on its own slice of vinyl. It is here presented as an unreleased acetate version and features some wild hammering on the piano, big, boisterous drums, expressive horns and guttural vocals. On the flip is a tune that is just as good in 'Money Tree.' The vocals are again sleazy and unrefined in all the right ways, with twanging guitars, psyched-out guitars and a big wall of sound.

Saints & Beggars (3:30)
Review: Feeling lucky? With grooves as raw, sizzling and energetic as these, there's a strong chance you might be. Hot on the heels of their "Mesquite Beat" 45 comes this equally earthy and frank doublet. "'Bout To Blow" is a big pant swinging blues affair while "Saints & Beggars" takes us up a notch with a whirling 6/8 signature whirling waltz where the horns and drums take the lead and we follow in their every dreamy footstep. Look out for the album Mesquite Suite coming on Tramp very soon.

Bronco Queen (vocal) (4:52)
Bronco Queen (instrumental) (4:43)
Review: As they say themselves, Tramp Records is one of Germany's tiniest but funkiest record labels. That's backed up once more here with two versions of a super golden soul tune from Van Buren. This originally appeared on the label's mighty fine which was a various artists collection a while ago. It is a tune well worthy of its own pressing though: 'Bronco Queen' (vocal) has low-slung drums with sensuous vocal harmonies and tumbling funk basslines all embellished with some sunny day melodies. The instrumental on the flip allows those melodies and brass lines to really shine.

Under The Trees (3:04)
Review: Carmelita is a digger's dream, a name that'll make eyeballs turn in their sockets when come across in second-hand record bins. She is only known for her Northern soul classic "Rosebud", but it appears that she may have had a few EPs that went below the radar. Tramp Germany have done us the favour of reissuing - and largely resurfacing - "Mitchie Mitchie Mo-Jo", a latin-funk stomper backed by an incredible percussion roll and Carmelita's own rugged but beautifully deep voice. "Under The Trees" is dreamier, more magical, and contains something of the mystical in its circling flutes. A real find - don't miss it.

Trading Bullets (3:58)
Review: Formed over two decades ago in a small town in Northern Finland, Chicken Grass is one of the most storied - if not particularly well-known - Finnish funk bands. Yet despite this history, they've never previously appeared on wax, making this must-check 45 a vinyl debut almost 25 years in the making. A-side 'Snakebites' is simply superb: a timeless slab of rhythm and blues style soul featuring authentically fuzzy production, punchy horns, mazy Hammond B3 solos and a killer lead vocal from YouTube sensation Princess Shaw. Flipside 'Trading Bullets', meanwhile, is a deeper chunk of blue-eyed business that adds spacey jazz-funk synths to the band's usual vintage soul sound.

Review: Tramp Records is one of Germany's tiniest (in their own words!) but funkiest labels who release new bands, but also re-issue quality rare funk, soul and jazz too. This time around they present us with City News for some truly authentic porn-funk soul vibes that you would honestly be convinced were from the early seventies in the vein of Hot Chocolate or Ramp like on the tremendous A side "Bustin' Up". On the flip we've got "Chan The Man" a kung-fu fightin' hoe down aboard the soul train express.

Bring It On Back To Me (2:32)
Review: Originally surfacing on King's Music City Records in the 1970s, Tramp now treats us all to a reissue that will bang at any party: 'Teach Me How To Bump' is a mod and soul groover powered by snappy drums while sleazy Hammond organs bring the colour next to a growling male vocal. 'Bring It On Back To Me' is much more powerful and direct with yet more Hammond organ madness.

Review: One of the leading cuts from Tramps' Moments Vol 9 collection, Connie Kaye Trio's super rare "Woman" playfully riffs on Peggy Lee's "Fever" riff but comes with a completely subverted message and mood behind the lyrics and a powerful northern soul stomp. Strident, striking and full of drive, this special 45 release has been long overdue. Catch it while you can.

Review: Tramp dig deep into the San Diego soul vaults and strike gold with this fiscal funk fire 45" from Dede Copeland on Big Daddy Rucker's short-lived GME imprint. Straight up soul with a strong emphasis on feels and finances; "Price I Had To Pay" rolls with a bluesy tone, swooning chords and a powerful backing vocals while "You Gotta Give Up Some Money" plays the consummate riposte with an upbeat unashamed request for investment. Shake your money makers.

Ooo-Wee Baby (part 1) (3:43)
Ooo-Wee Baby (part 2) (2:58)
Review: Like many of the records they choose to reissue, the D.M Movements' sole single, 'Ooo Wee Baby', is seriously obscure and hard-to find. It was one of just a handful of releases on John T Johnson's private press imprint Jay-Tone Records and saw him transform girl group the Satin Dolls (who's harmonious, feelgood releases also appeared on the label) into a laidback funk outfit. The A-side 'Part 1' is the full vocal take, with the band's sassy singing riding loose-limbed funk breaks, heavy organ licks and a heady bassline. Arguably even better is the flipside 'Part 2' version, a largely instrumental take (albeit with some breathless backing vocal) with wilder Hammond licks and a slightly harder-edged groove.

Talk Is Cheap (3:01)
Review: The Echomen's song 'Let's Get Together' first appeared on the third volume of the Movements compilation series many many years ago. Now repressed via Tramp, it's a soul-swing anthem for positive change, calling on people young and old to make peace with their own communities. It rails directly against individualism, opting for humility; the B-side 'Talk Is Cheap' echoes a similar sentiment, but within the context of a relationship.

The Ring (2:02)
Review: A monstrous 45rpm jazz vocal double-sider from 1972, TRAMP records has been on a rampage with their treatment of incredible and rare jazz and funk. 'When He Speaks', featured on the compilation album 'Movements Vol.11', is a swingy groove pining about a sickly sweet romance, a soulful fairytale. Side B is a far more sombre affair, however. 'The Ring' is a guitar-led ballad on temptation, guilt and remorse, Elliott's voice reverberating from the speakers like an empty chapel.

Review: While Philly's Don Gardner is largely famed for hits such as "I Need Your Loving" and "Glory Of Love", it's releases such as this 1967 Cedric 45" (among other notable and highly rare 45"s on Verve and Sedgewick) that have really stood the test of time and stood out to collectors happy to pay thousands. And for good reason; "Tighten Up Your Love Bone" is a gutsy power R&B soul joint while "Is This Really Love" takes its foot off the gas for moments of pure come-to-bed soul many years before White and Hayes made it their signature. Don really was the real deal.

Ma(r)l Sehen (3:16)
Review: Tramp Records has stayed close to home for this release, reissuing two killer cuts from the 1981 album "Mittwochs In Marl" album by Tyree Glenn Jr. While he is American - his father, Glenn senior, was famously Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong's trombonist - Glenn Jr had moved to Germany (where he still resides) around the time that the album was recorded. Lead cut "Superbad" is a genuinely heavy, full-throttle funk beast, with Glenn Jr doing his best James Brown impression over an insatiable groove and rousing sax solos. "Ma(r)l Sehen", on the other hand, is a much more breezy affair - an instrumental jazz-funk outing rich in dueling sax and electric piano solos.

Beautiful Woman (3:18)
Review: TRAMP Records continues to delve into the archives of Tyree Glenn, Jr, a Germany-based American funk and soul stalwart whose musical pedigree is immaculate (his father, Tyree Glenn senior, was Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong's trombonist). This tasty "45" serves up two of the four tracks first featured on the thoroughly obscure "Samba Oh Samba" EP in the early 1980s. A-side "Jealous Love" is a killer chunk of multi-coloured P-funk featuring gnarled electric guitar solos and lead vocals by Georg Hahn and Wayne Bartlett. Glenn, Jr handles lead vocals on flipside "Beautiful Woman", a similarly synth-heavy chunk of 1980s electrofunk that also sports a rather fine - if sleazy - sax solo.

Review: A northern soul rarity of the highest order, one 45 wonder Hank Hodge's two sided emotion bounty has been known to pass hands for over $1000 and was famously covered up by premiership diggers such as Colin Law to hide its identity. Now democratised by Tramp, both sides still pack an incredible punch: "One Way Love" pumps with a real urgent passion and dramatic horns while "Thank You Girl" should be reserved for a little later in the night with its straight up soul dynamic, big backing vocals and sympathetic orchestration that droops into the background enough to let Hodge cut through with overwhelming power.

Take The 'A' Plane (3:32)
Review: Tramp Records look to their own rich soul compilation Movements Volume 9 for this one. It is a single take from it by the Hot Cakes gang. 'Harlem Shuffle Theme' is bongo laced and lively funky breakbeat magic with tumbling bass. It's bristling and brilliant even before the playful vocals come in and encourage you to move. Flip it over and you'll find the even more funky 'Take The A Plane,' with tightly knotted bass riffs, big lead horn work and natty chords fleshing out the rhythms. Two red hot dance floor burners for sure.

This is the first time they have been available on 45rpm and first up is 'Kill The Pain.' It's a raw one with big breaks and lung-busting lyrics next to horns to make you spin. 'Mix Up' (A Go Go) is another one that rustles up a raucous funk vibe with layers of busy drums, wooden percussion and vocals that have a hint of 60s swing and soul to them.

Review: The late James Kelly Duhon hailed from Beaumont in Texas, and in the late1960s he was in a group known as The Ascots. He put out a small but well formed selection of tunes and those included the two pressed up here to this limited 45rpm. 'So Trusting' is a big number with noted bass and big orchestra string stabs. On the backside is 'So Far Down' which actually got a national release on Mainstream Records while Duhon was still touring. It's a deeply affecting bit of soul musing on the lack of employment and a longing for the good times.

Review: Tramp head back to the late 60s and dust off the criminally rare Club 7 releases. Arranged by Johnny Heartsman - a man who played a role in hundreds of funk, blues and soul releases throughout the decade - Rudy's honey-coated tones drape themselves over both these cuts in true style. "Love" is an upbeat northern soul groove with a big hook and big vocals to match. Complete with a cheeky whistle, it leaves you feeling you've known it forever. "Let's Stick Together", meanwhile, is a straight up smoky blues affair where Rudy, the horns and guitar sit together with emphatic harmony. Feel the love.

Helpless Girl (3:15)
Review: Predictably, Tramp's latest killer reissue comes from an artist that very little is known about. The sought-after "Steppin' Stone" (an original copy will set you back three figures) is little Mary Staten's only known release, and first appeared on the short-lived GME imprint sometime in the 1960s. The title track is predictably fuzzy - the kind of impassioned, on-point soul cut that Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings spent a career trying to capture. On the flip you'll find the equally impressive "Helpless Girl", a gospel-influenced, organ-rich slow jam in which Staten recounts the heartache felt after discovering the behaviour of an errant, bad-boy lover.

Review: "Sweet Tea (With My Sweetie)" was originally destined for inclusion on Lucky Brown & The SG's 2018 album "Mesquite Suite", but for one reason or another ended up getting cut. Happily, Tramp Tapes has decided to make it available as a 7-inch single instead. As with previous Brown excursions, the title track sounds like it was recorded sometime in the late 1960s, with authentically fuzzy production, punchy horns, Meters style Hammond licks and sweet, eyes-closed guitar riffs riding a loose but punchy funk-soul groove. "More Sweet Tea" sees the assembled band offer up a jazzier, solo-heavy instrumental revision of the title track that's even dustier and heavier than the A-side.
