Pearl (Among The Swine) (6:03)
Review: In Tramp we trust! Germany's foremost funk archivalists are on a veritable roll right now and swiftly follow that double drop of Peach Chant compilations with this kicker 7" from the Bobby Hamilton Quintet. The quintet's rare 1972 LP, Dream Queen, is the focus here as Tramp exhume two prime jazz funk cuts for their debut appearance on their preferred 7" format. Ever a label to keep DJs on their toes, both cuts on this 45 actually play at 33rpm, a method employed by Tramp to ensure both 5 minute tracks sound as loud and crisp as possible! There's an altogether dreamy quality to the lead trumpet on "Roll Your Own" (has this been sampled?) whilst "Pearl (Among The Swine)" will please the jazz dancers no end.

Review: Feeling lucky? With grooves as raw, sizzling and energetic as these, there's a strong chance you might be. Hot on the heels of their "Mesquite Beat" 45 comes this equally earthy and frank doublet. "'Bout To Blow" is a big pant swinging blues affair while "Saints & Beggars" takes us up a notch with a whirling 6/8 signature whirling waltz where the horns and drums take the lead and we follow in their every dreamy footstep. Look out for the album Mesquite Suite coming on Tramp very soon.

Under The Trees (3:04)
Review: Carmelita is a digger's dream, a name that'll make eyeballs turn in their sockets when come across in second-hand record bins. She is only known for her Northern soul classic "Rosebud", but it appears that she may have had a few EPs that went below the radar. Tramp Germany have done us the favour of reissuing - and largely resurfacing - "Mitchie Mitchie Mo-Jo", a latin-funk stomper backed by an incredible percussion roll and Carmelita's own rugged but beautifully deep voice. "Under The Trees" is dreamier, more magical, and contains something of the mystical in its circling flutes. A real find - don't miss it.

Bring It On Back To Me (2:32)
Review: Originally surfacing on King's Music City Records in the 1970s, Tramp now treats us all to a reissue that will bang at any party: 'Teach Me How To Bump' is a mod and soul groover powered by snappy drums while sleazy Hammond organs bring the colour next to a growling male vocal. 'Bring It On Back To Me' is much more powerful and direct with yet more Hammond organ madness.

Review: Tramp dig deep into the San Diego soul vaults and strike gold with this fiscal funk fire 45" from Dede Copeland on Big Daddy Rucker's short-lived GME imprint. Straight up soul with a strong emphasis on feels and finances; "Price I Had To Pay" rolls with a bluesy tone, swooning chords and a powerful backing vocals while "You Gotta Give Up Some Money" plays the consummate riposte with an upbeat unashamed request for investment. Shake your money makers.

Ooo-Wee Baby (part 1) (3:43)
Ooo-Wee Baby (part 2) (2:58)
Review: Like many of the records they choose to reissue, the D.M Movements' sole single, 'Ooo Wee Baby', is seriously obscure and hard-to find. It was one of just a handful of releases on John T Johnson's private press imprint Jay-Tone Records and saw him transform girl group the Satin Dolls (who's harmonious, feelgood releases also appeared on the label) into a laidback funk outfit. The A-side 'Part 1' is the full vocal take, with the band's sassy singing riding loose-limbed funk breaks, heavy organ licks and a heady bassline. Arguably even better is the flipside 'Part 2' version, a largely instrumental take (albeit with some breathless backing vocal) with wilder Hammond licks and a slightly harder-edged groove.

Talk Is Cheap (3:01)
Review: The Echomen's song 'Let's Get Together' first appeared on the third volume of the Movements compilation series many many years ago. Now repressed via Tramp, it's a soul-swing anthem for positive change, calling on people young and old to make peace with their own communities. It rails directly against individualism, opting for humility; the B-side 'Talk Is Cheap' echoes a similar sentiment, but within the context of a relationship.

Is This Really Love (2:15)
Review: While Philly's Don Gardner is largely famed for hits such as "I Need Your Loving" and "Glory Of Love", it's releases such as this 1967 Cedric 45" (among other notable and highly rare 45"s on Verve and Sedgewick) that have really stood the test of time and stood out to collectors happy to pay thousands. And for good reason; "Tighten Up Your Love Bone" is a gutsy power R&B soul joint while "Is This Really Love" takes its foot off the gas for moments of pure come-to-bed soul many years before White and Hayes made it their signature. Don really was the real deal.

Review: Super limited 45 with two tracks taken from the Tramp long player The Story Of Vernon Garrett. Vernon started off in the entertainment business, singing gospel music in church in Nebraska. Years later, after serving in the US Navy and relocating to Los Angeles, he embarked on a successful career as a talented vocalist and percussionist. "Don't Do What I Do" is a fast and furious soul funk club smash with a distinctive live sounds and Vernon's vocals upfront in the mix. On the flip, ''Satisfying Woman'' shows Vernon on top form with a polished vocal performance assisted by an uncredited female. Only 300 copies - don't sleep!

Review: A northern soul rarity of the highest order, one 45 wonder Hank Hodge's two sided emotion bounty has been known to pass hands for over $1000 and was famously covered up by premiership diggers such as Colin Law to hide its identity. Now democratised by Tramp, both sides still pack an incredible punch: "One Way Love" pumps with a real urgent passion and dramatic horns while "Thank You Girl" should be reserved for a little later in the night with its straight up soul dynamic, big backing vocals and sympathetic orchestration that droops into the background enough to let Hodge cut through with overwhelming power.

Soul Dance No 3 (2:40)
Review: This tight 45rpm was recorded a few years before Carl Holmes's Investigation No1 album, which went on to become rather legendary. It features the lung busting vocals of Pervis Herder on vocals on both the A and the B-side. An OG will cost you a pretty penny - if you can find one at all - and to get one in good condition will be even harder. But worry not as this legitimate reissue gives you a mint copy, with the hard hitting Philly strings and breaks busting out the speakers and diving deep into your soul. Pure dance floor dynamite if ever we heard it.

Review: Mid 70s soul and funk from the little-known Walter Jenkins. Originally pressed on Apollo off-shoot Faderkat, original pressings have been known for pass hands for a few hundred and it's not hard to understand why: "Back In My Life" is a swooning soul ballad with enough strut to move a floor while "Funky Walk (The Money Talk)" is a pumping northern crossover with big band leader style orders from Walter himself. The Penn Walk (2:52)
Review: George E Johnson's "Wake Me Up" is another of those killer funk rarities that very few people know about. It was released at some point in the dim and distant past on C.R.S Records, a deep funk imprint from Philadelphia that will soon be the subject of a Tramp Records compilation. This reissue, then, is something of a teaser for that set. "Wake Me Up" is a suitably heavy number, with George E Johnson delivering an impressively impassioned lead vocal over a fuzzy, intoxicated groove rich in distorted guitars, psychedelic-era Hammond organ licks, snaking sax lines and bustling drum-breaks. B-side "The Penn Walk" strips out Johnson's vocal, allowing the backing band's killer instrumentation to really shine.

Review: Junior & The Classics dropped these super heavy funk cuts on Lenny LaCour's Magic Touch label and now Tramp reissues them for us all to enjoy once more. This is the first time they have been available on 45rpm and first up is 'Kill The Pain.' It's a raw one with big breaks and lung-busting lyrics next to horns to make you spin. 'Mix Up' (A Go Go) is another one that rustles up a raucous funk vibe with layers of busy drums, wooden percussion and vocals that have a hint of 60s swing and soul to them.

Steppin' Stone (2:09)
Helpless Girl (3:15)
Review: Predictably, Tramp's latest killer reissue comes from an artist that very little is known about. The sought-after "Steppin' Stone" (an original copy will set you back three figures) is little Mary Staten's only known release, and first appeared on the short-lived GME imprint sometime in the 1960s. The title track is predictably fuzzy - the kind of impassioned, on-point soul cut that Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings spent a career trying to capture. On the flip you'll find the equally impressive "Helpless Girl", a gospel-influenced, organ-rich slow jam in which Staten recounts the heartache felt after discovering the behaviour of an errant, bad-boy lover.

He Does It Better (3:30)
Scarborough Fair (3:40)
Review: When compiling the most recent edition of their "Praise Poems" compilation series, the dusty-fingered diggers at TRAMP Records decided to include a cut from Marva Josie's 1973 album-length collaboration with the Earl "Fatha" Hines Orchestra, "This Is Marva Josie". That track, the brilliant soul-jazz breeze that is "He Does It Better", is here reissued on "45" for the first time. It features Josie's sweetly sassy lead vocal sitting atop a sparse but swinging jazz groove and some seriously good piano playing. You'll find another gem from that album on side B: Josie's orchestral jazz rendition of English folk standard - and Simon & Garfunkel favourite - "Scarborough Fair". If anything, that's even better than the A-side - and that's saying something.

Review: Feeling peckish? Then chow down on this firing piece of deep blues funk. Riddled with James Brown style screams and grunts, Tramp have unearthed this 1984 classic, delivered it on sweet one-sided 7" and it's not to be overlooked. Review: Little is known about obscure Seattle combo Mr Clean & The Cleansers, other than that they release one single, "Karate", on a label called Camelot sometime in the mid 1960s. The single has previously been included on a couple of similarly obscure CD compilations put together by crate digging DJs, but this is the first time it has been given a worldwide release on vinyl. "Karate (Part 1)" sets the tone, delivering a fiendishly fuzzy, martial arts themed chunk of Detroit style seemingly inspired by Stevie Wonder classic "Uptight". The flipside "Part 2" version is a little looser, with improvised, freestyle vocals and even more righteous horn lines.

How Can I Get In Touch With You (2:44)
Review: New Jersey's RDM Band are perhaps not the most productive of bands to come out of the US' 60s soul sound but, looking back fast things, they certainly had a powerful impact on the scene. Proudly and masterfully, as always, the mighty Tramp imprint have gone and found the band's recordings from 1969, spear-headed by Milton Campbell's iconic voice. Both "Give Up" and "How Can I Get In Touch With You" are utterly timeless examples of what American soul has to teach the world even 40 years after its inception, and you might wanna act fast given just how in-demand the original version of this 7" has become!

Love Is Just Like A Baseball Game (2:30)
Review: Tramp Records' latest vital reissue delves into the back catalogue of the Reggie Saddler Revue, a largely little known funk combo that released a handful of 45s at the start of the 1970s. This double A-side brings together two killer cuts that originally appeared on different 7" singles, both of which are now near impossible to find. A-side "Raggedy Bag" is raw, weighty and impassioned - a scorching slab of deep funk that more than lives up to its high reputation amongst collectors. Over on the flip you'll find "Love Is Just Like A Baseball Game", a sweeter and more loved-up affair blessed with superb vocal harmonies that's nevertheless impressively fuzzy.

Review: Legendary funk and soul organist John Hurd only ever released one single alongside The Revised Brotherhood Band, 1971's "Tragedy" and "Those Things". He was famously mentored by the great Roger Troutman, and you can hear that unpredictability in this single, which is why the Tramp label have done us an absolute favour by reissuing this rare and magnificent 7". "Tragedy" is pure naughtiness, a raw and improvisational soul cut with a nasty, funked-out kinda lean that sits somewhere between Isaac Hayes and James Brown. "Those Things" is where you can really hear Hurd's organ skills, and those keys jump out of the vinyl and into mid-air thanks to the help of a whirlpool of brass and percussion. Ya need!

Review: Such emphatic, belly-driven vocal power... Criminally, Dahle Scott never got the spotlight she deserved. Put it this way, if she and Nina Simone had ever attempted a soundclash, they'd have torn a massive hole in the space time continuum. Luckily Tramp have unearthed this previously rare (L200 a copy rare) 7" produced by bebop legend Roy Porter. "Out On The Town Tonight" is a big band, Mancini-style jam. "Givin Me The Blues" is a much more naked affair; all slinky, jazzy and sprung with a timeless swing, this record will never give you the blues.

Track 2 (2:42)
Review: In 1977, Atlanta fusionists Starfoxx had a big hit in the US Billboard chart with "Disco Rock", a cut that -as the title suggests - added a rock and rhythm & blues edge to the then dominant disco sound. It was something of a novelty, but much of their earlier work is pretty darn hot. "Oh Linda", which first appeared in stores in 1973, could well be the hottest of the lot. Sitting somewhere between the rasping blues-rock of Cream and more extravagant American funk and soul, the track is full to bursting with crunchy Clavinet riffs, throaty vocals and mazy electric piano solos. This reissue from TRAMP contains just the one track (pressed to both sides for some reason), but don't let that put you off: it really is a must-have.

"Who Do You Love" marked a complete change in vibe from the rich warm crooner. A swooning Motown flavoured joint with big backing harmonies and a dreamy tint, it's Stark at his softest.
