Philadelphia Mambo (warehouse find, slight sleeve wear)
Philadelphia Mambo (5:05)
Girl From Ipanema (5:04)
Review: The dusty-fingered diggers behind TRAMP Records have unearthed something rather special here: an unreleased, full-length recording of a live performance by hitherto unheralded combo Afro Blue Persuasion, an Afro-Cuban Jazz band fronted by Bay Area stalwart Ulysses Crockett. The full album, "Live at Haight Levels", will be released in 2019. As a taster, TRAMP has served up two tight edits of epic album tracks. "Philadelphia Mambo" is particularly potent, with breezy piano riffs and inspired saxophone solos rising above and distinctive mambo groove and tons of additional hand percussion. The flipside features their loose, solo-laden interpretation of bossanova classic "Girl From Ipanema". It's pretty darn good, though lacks the sheer ebullience of the more dancefloor-focused A-side.

Review: TRAMP Records continues to serve up tracks from "Live at Haight Levels", a rare 1960s recording of Bay Area stalwart Ulysses Crockett's little-known Afro-Cuban jazz band, Afro-Blue Persuasion. Both "Cuban Fantasy" and "Poinciana" have been edited to fit on a seven-inch, with the epic original versions naturally featuring in full-length form on the separately available two-part album. "Cuban Fantasy" is especially good, with wild flute solos and fluid piano motifs rising above a densely percussive Afro-Cuban groove. "Poinciana", meanwhile, is an altogether jauntier and breezier proposition rich in hot and heavy sax, Tito Puente style drums and more offbeat piano riffs.

Review: Soul fans rejoice because this is a truly cockle-warming gem that gets a much-anticipated reissue on Tramp. Amazin' Five's 'Only With You' pairs gorgeous and clean vocals with golden chords and backing trumpets that add warmth and luxury. It is a truly breezy cut that will work as well on dark winter nights as it will bright sunny afternoons and it comes with a Russian vocal as well as the English a-side. The Russian one appears on the flip and brings a more international feel. This is another fine move from Germany's Tramp label.

Review: For their latest must-check rare soul reissue, German crate diggers TRAMP Records take us back to 1969 and the sole single from Philadelphia outfit Andy Aaron & the Mean Machine. A-side "You're The Only One" is a superb chunk of bass-heavy soul full of energetic drumming, fuzzy horn motifs, inspired lead vocals by Bonnie Blanchard and sax solos from none other than Grover Washington (then a young musician and member of the Mean Machine). Equally as potent is instrumental flipside "Right On Time", which is a riotous funk workout that boasts more lung-busting solos from an on form Washington.

Here's Where I Get Off (2:43)
Review: American rock band Atilla and The Huns hail from Wisconsin and formed in 1964. The group consists of drummer Rich Legault, bassist Denny Lewan and singer/guitarist Mike Peace as well as rhythm guitarist Ben Wiesneiwski and they became a big hit on the local circuit. They put out only three two trackers between 1965 and 1969 and this newly assembled 7" plucks one track each from two of the now hard to find and pricey originals. 1967's 'Hurry Back' is a rolling funk number with bulky drums and twanging riffs that oozes 60s cool. 1969's 'Here's Where I Get Off' is a more sentimental roller with slightly deeper grooves and more lovestruck lyrics. Both will do well with Northern Soul lovers.

Jody & John (2:54)
Review: Now this is what you call a hot damn funk record right here. The legendary Nathan Bartell released this absolute scorcher "Top Going Up Going Down" back in 1975 and is what you could call a good and proper digger's delight. You can trust German powerhouse Tramp (run by Tobias Kirmayer) to bring the revival as always, as these guys specialize in rare soul and funk reissues. Second offering "Jody & John" undeniably takes it cues from the godfather himself James Brown and his orchestra but wow: this one absolutely explosive tribute if we do say so ourselves. Hailing from Ashburn, Georgia, Bartell started out with Eddie & the Cascades in the '60s. In 1991 Bartell was hospitalised with a lung ailment and while recovering became born again and vowed never again to sing R&B music. He instead formed a Gospel group called Nathan Bartell & Reality and still performs in Southern Georgia.

Review: Ring Musik is one of Germany's finest library record labels and it is that which has been pillaged for this super new 7" on Tramp Records. The double a-side has never been re-issued since the first time it came out in 1976 and comes here with B-side bomb 'Bubble and Squeak,' a real rare groove classic with fluid bass playing and rolling rhythms that are softened with tender chord work and airy flute. A-side 'Sally' is a brilliantly intriguing track that leads you to a place of mystery on meandering bass, wandering keys and 60s horns. Both of these are lush.

Review: Better known as Johnny K, Ohio's Big John K was a vocal tour de force in the 50s/60s, playing with the likes of Ray Charles and recording a host of gems for indie labels that never had the funds to do his powerful dulcets justice. Gems like these. "Poor Souls" is a strike to the heart with a sword made of pure psychedelic blues. Gutsy, yearning and just the right side of cosmic, it's the reason why rare copies of this have gone for triple figures in the past. Flip for a more upbeat jam as Big John lays his stomp down with marching band energy. You'll be coming round the mountain in a jiffy the minute you hear this.

I'm Growing Old (3:17)
Review: Originally released on his 1967 album A Point Of View, Bobby Cole's 'A Perfect Day' is a stirring slice of vocal jazz which surges with urgency thanks to his virtuoso piano playing. There's a sadness behind his lyrics, and it creeps in around the edges of his musical chops, but the pace of the track gives it an infectious buoyancy. That's certainly not the case on the B side, where Cole's malaise comes to the fore on what was the album's closing track, 'I'm Growing Old'. As you might expect, it's a downcast reflection on ageing, sung with acerbic honesty and played with heart.

Review: In Tramp we trust! Germany's foremost funk archivalists are on a veritable roll right now and swiftly follow that double drop of Peach Chant compilations with this kicker 7" from the Bobby Hamilton Quintet. The quintet's rare 1972 LP, Dream Queen, is the focus here as Tramp exhume two prime jazz funk cuts for their debut appearance on their preferred 7" format. Ever a label to keep DJs on their toes, both cuts on this 45 actually play at 33rpm, a method employed by Tramp to ensure both 5 minute tracks sound as loud and crisp as possible! There's an altogether dreamy quality to the lead trumpet on "Roll Your Own" (has this been sampled?) whilst "Pearl (Among The Swine)" will please the jazz dancers no end.

Review: Straight up steamy, sweaty shake-down soul that - until now - has been rare as hen's teeth. Spotted passing hands for upwards of L500 in the past, we have two storming sides for the price of one: "Mood For Love" is a stomp happy northern soul classic loaded with all the right ingredients; big harmonies, bigger horns and a beat that won't quit. "Let Me Down Easy" didn't achieve anthem status in the same way and has since been the driver for the original pressing's high price. Stick the needle on and you'll know why; powerful Rhodes, life-affirming horns and a gutsy vocal that burns from the inside in the best possible way.

Armed with just a smidgeon of compere kitsch and big band showmanship "The Ride" is a punchy sing along slice of funk drama with very crisp delivery and story telling while "The Thief" takes us on much more of an Elton John style trip with galloping pianos, detailed phrases and a climax that seems to never end. Don't Go Away
The Fresh One
Review: Tramp Records is keen on continuing its busy release schedule, never compromising quality, danceability, collectibility or personality in its sheer volume of releases.

2008 starts with 'Don't Go Away', the exciting debut of Lucky Brown & The Funk Revolution, a brand-new unit formed by producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist, Joel Ricci. Ricci and his far-reaching collective have been hard at work rocking shows and developing their signature 'west-sound' style for over seven years. Ricci hand-picked the cream of the players, bankrolled a wild, week-long road trip, then crammed the seven piece Funk Revolution into his tiny cabin in Northwest Washington, affectionately dubbed 'Chez Jojo.' The rhythm section in the living room, horn section in the kitchen, and Ricci in the middle doing his best to capture all the drippings of natural energy and soul on an old tape machine situated on a clean spot on the kitchen counter.

'Don't Go Away' features Ricci on lead vocals and the horn section as background singers. This cut has all you need: powerful vocals, a monstrous horn line reminiscent of the JB's 'The Grunt', and two fly flute/drum breaks for the beatdiggers.

'The Fresh One' is an instrumental track with a rude sound to it, The Funk Revolution lay down a killer groove and after Tommy D has his way with his spooky saxophone, Lucky manhandles the flute once again, then makes way for drummer Olli Klomp to take it on home. 'The Fresh One' is simply a monster b-side, 2 and a half minutes of wild and rough deep funk madness.

Although the number of bands that are playing so-called deep-funk steadily increases, few can match the chemistry, urgency and true funk grit as these brethren. Lucky Brown & The Funk Revolution get the job done by simply doing what they do, hungry to present themselves and their thing to the world. The pan-Atlantic partnership and friendship forged between Joel Ricci and Tobias Kirmayer has given birth to this incredible double-sider. A fitting debut for a real funk revolution and sure to be a sought after collector's item, the first in a parade of dance floor power singles.

This originally appeared on the label's mighty fine which was a various artists collection a while ago. She is only known for her Northern soul classic "Rosebud", but it appears that she may have had a few EPs that went below the radar. Tramp Germany have done us the favour of reissuing - and largely resurfacing - "Mitchie Mitchie Mo-Jo", a latin-funk stomper backed by an incredible percussion roll and Carmelita's own rugged but beautifully deep voice. Back in 2013 they put out a compilation of his near impossible-to-find singles and here reissue arguably his most rare and sought-after 45 (for proof, check how much original private press copies change hands for online). Yet despite this history, they've never previously appeared on wax, making this must-check 45 a vinyl debut almost 25 years in the making. It was one of just a handful of releases on John T Johnson's private press imprint Jay-Tone Records and saw him transform girl group the Satin Dolls (who's harmonious, feelgood releases also appeared on the label) into a laidback funk outfit. The A-side 'Part 1' is the full vocal take, with the band's sassy singing riding loose-limbed funk breaks, heavy organ licks and a heady bassline. A story teller with a strong, smoky bluesy twang and wide range over two sides he paints a big picture; "I'm In Your Corner" has a great Stax style sleazy funk with its tight looseness and brilliantly timed horn section. This was his first record in the late 70s, right on the cusp between trad funk and the emergent sound of boogie. 'S'port City Rock' is a sweat-inducing dancefloor cut with a deadly on-the-one groove and some serious bass, letting just a few choice synth zaps to sneak into the mix but keeping things primarily organic. 'When He Speaks', featured on the compilation album 'Movements Vol.11', is a swingy groove pining about a sickly sweet romance, a soulful fairytale. Side B is a far more sombre affair, however. 'The Ring' is a guitar-led ballad on temptation, guilt and remorse, Elliott's voice reverberating from the speakers like an empty chapel.

Since I Fell For You (feat The Centuries) (2:00)
Hard Times (2:33)
Review: Jimmy 'Preacher' Ellis is one of those admirable soul singers whose talent alone was not enough to take him to the very top of the music industry. Despite boasting an incredible voice, he had to make do with releasing singles and a sole album on a variety of obscure labels. 'Since I Fell For You', which is here reissued by the dusty-fingered diggers at TRAMP Records, was the first of these. Released in 1963 on the tiny Cross Road label, the song sees Ellis and the Centuries sing about a lost love atop a unique - but rather good - Latin-soul backing track. Flipside 'Hard Times' dates from a little later in Ellis' career and is little less than an urgent rhythm & blues treat. Ellis's gravelly, impassioned vocal is nothing less than superb.

The Bull Is Coming (feat The Devil's Personal Band)
Review: One of funk's longest standing representatives, Fields continues to contribute to myriad genres, including contemporary acts like Kraak & Smaak. For this reissue, however, Tramp take us back to 1979 with a snapshot from his debut album Let's Talk It Over. Tight swings and frenetic horn work give both sides a real JBs thrust while The Devil's Personal Band are allowed to let loose on their own on "The Bull Is Coming". Another successful reboot of a once rare-as-hens-teeth 7", Tramp have well and truly spoilt us.

Review: Prior to this highly anticipated reissue, crazy amounts of paper have been passed over for this once-rare funk gem. It's not hard to hear why... Released in 1970, "I'll Leave You" is a big band swinger that built on the blues funk foundations Redding dug the year with "Too Hard To Handle". File under instant feel good floor stomper. Flip for "St James Infirmary". Rich, bluesy and delivered with spacious production and crisp delivery... Written 40 years before this recording, sounding good 44 years later - this really is a timeless record.

Review: Back to Atlanta, 1978: Keither Florance and his Clark College compadres laid down this beautiful rare-as-unicorn-teeth 45. Ably curated by Andy Noble and once the sole preserve of a small amount of collectors, Tramp's reissue ensures we can all enjoy these sparkling cosmic jazz funk creations with added remastered benefits. From the dubby reflections of the instrumental heads-down stamped of "Free" to the more hopeful, rising cadences and soft soul of "Future", these 39-year-old jams have matured consummately.

Review: Tramp hit hard and heavy with this crucial doublet from Detroit enigma Syl Foreman. Fresh from 66 with triple-figure rare status, this two-part soul/northern soul jam hits home in all directions. Side A struts with the straight up raw funk edge while the B side hurls us into groove oblivion with an absurd drum break popping the cork. Trust us, nobody's leaving when those beats roll in. A genuinely incredible 45.

Review: The small but potent Tramp label is back with more irresistible gems from Frederic Rabold Crew. The bad was formed in 1968 and went on to soon become big names in the German jazz scene of their era. The crew travelled a lot throughout Europe and between 1972 and 1980 dropped an impressive six studio albums. It is 1975's Open House record that is pillaged for the two singles presented here after they have been served up as part of Tramp's spiritual jazz compilation album Peace Chant which is as worthy of your attention as this 7".

The Fugitives/Archie - "Funky You" (2:18)
The Fugitives/Scottie - "Love Come Down" (3:30)
Review: When it comes to reissuing vintage soul and funk, Germany's Tramp label is second to none. For them, a new week means a new beauty to reissue, and this particular week in October is no different; in fact, this magnetic little 7" is fabulous in every way. First up is 1971's "Funky You" by The Fugitives and Archie, a group who only released a handful of EPs under that moniker, but whose most famous tune is here for you to own, and cause serious levels of angst among the collectors (as you can imagine, the original is rather hard to find). On the flip, the same outfit team up with Scottie for a more classic, sensual love ballad called "Love Come Down", the sort of song which makes your head turn and spin to ask the DJ: "mate, what's that!?".

Review: Lucky Brown continues his relentless quest to keep the spirit of deep funk alive with this latest LP drop on his spiritual home of Tramp Records. The Seattle funkateer has been credited with keeping authenticity and gritty flair at the heart of his sound and that comes through by the bucketload on this essential record from the archives of his band The Funk Revolution. Pulled from the heady, spiritual living room sessions from which his 2011 Tramp debut was compiled, this is the first half of a veritable feast of hot and heavy jams from a band locked into something just beyond their comprehension, like all the best funk should be.

This time out it is Lucky Brown's Crawdad Farmers aka The Funk Revolution who serve up 'Space Dream,' a track named to commemorate a soulfunk masquerade party trumpet player Lucky Brown aka Joel Ricci threw at a Bellingham Washington music venue many years ago. The a-side features a version that is lo-fi and raw, a real jumbled of loose drums and funky leads, then comes a rehearsal version of 'Scatterbrain' which his another slow and purposeful funk workout.

Review: While Philly's Don Gardner is largely famed for hits such as "I Need Your Loving" and "Glory Of Love", it's releases such as this 1967 Cedric 45" (among other notable and highly rare 45"s on Verve and Sedgewick) that have really stood the test of time and stood out to collectors happy to pay thousands. And for good reason; "Tighten Up Your Love Bone" is a gutsy power R&B soul joint while "Is This Really Love" takes its foot off the gas for moments of pure come-to-bed soul many years before White and Hayes made it their signature. Don really was the real deal.

Review: TRAMP Records' reissue output is so frequent and consistently good that each successive 45 is a genuine must-check affair. Their latest is an absolute beast, too: a new edition of a suitably obscure, impossible-to-find funk seven from one-shot outfit George & The Highlanders. 'The Hawk' first landed in selected US stores way back in 1967 and is a near perfect example of bustling, celebratory instrumental funk of the sort that makes you want to flail your limbs around uncontrollably. It's sharp sax lines and heavy Hammond organ licks are particularly satisfying. The band's organist comes to the fore on flipside 'Smoking Bananas', where wild solos and jammed-out chords rise above another killer, low-slung heavy funk groove.

Review: Over the last couple of years, TRAMP Records has done much to raise awareness of the work of Tyree Glenn Jr, an American rhythm & blues, soul, funk and jazz musician/band leader who has resided in Germany for well over 35 years. Here they continue to pay tribute to him via a first ever retrospective compilation. It begins with a quartet of killer live recordings from his 1978 set with Brain Damage (including fiery covers of tracks by Kool & The Gang and War), then offers up such gems as "Marler Eintopf (Deutsch)", "S.O.S" - previously reissued by TRAMP on a "45" - and his heavyweight James Brown cover that gives the compilation its title, "Superbad". This edition also contains a bonus seven-inch reissue of Glenn's 1964 debut single with the Emotions.

Ma(r)l Sehen (3:16)
Review: Tramp Records has stayed close to home for this release, reissuing two killer cuts from the 1981 album "Mittwochs In Marl" album by Tyree Glenn Jr. While he is American - his father, Glenn senior, was famously Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong's trombonist - Glenn Jr had moved to Germany (where he still resides) around the time that the album was recorded. Lead cut "Superbad" is a genuinely heavy, full-throttle funk beast, with Glenn Jr doing his best James Brown impression over an insatiable groove and rousing sax solos. "Ma(r)l Sehen", on the other hand, is a much more breezy affair - an instrumental jazz-funk outing rich in dueling sax and electric piano solos.
