Open Your Heart Part 1 (limited 7") (1 per customer)
Cat: SCT 001. Rel: 06 Oct 16
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Open Your Heart (part 1) (2:40)
  2. Satisfactorize Your Mind (2:45)
Review: The work of obscure, conscious funk outfit Africano has previously proved popular with reissue labels, in part due to the rare nature of their original 1970s releases. This limited 7" single features two of their finest tracks: the fairly well known "Open Your Heart", and 1973's "Satisfactorize Your Mind". While the latter is a string-drenched treat that feels like a dustier, slightly more psychedelic take on the Philadelphia International sound, it's "Open Your Heart" that most impresses. Featuring urgent, passionate vocals, winding horn lines and a stomping funk-soul beat, it remains the outfit's finest moment bar none.

Soul
  1. She Wants A Stand In (2:44)
  2. You Don't Mean It (3:03)
Review: Gloria Barnes' 1971 debut album, Uptown, has long been a holy grail of many funk and soul collectors. A quick search on a popular online music marketplace will confirm its rare and expensive nature, with copies changing hands for well over L1,000. Recently launched reissue imprint Suncut has done us all a favour, then, by licensing two of the best tracks from that set and whacking them on this dinked 7" single. Both tracks are naturally superb. Barnes' powerful, evocative vocals come to the fore on the loose, mid-tempo sweetness of A-side "She Wants A Stand In", before whipping up a storm on the fiendishly percussive, up-tempo flipside anthem "If You Don't Need Him".

Funk
  1. Easy Greasy (part 1) (3:30)
  2. Easy Greasy (part 2) (2:37)
Review: Back to 1975 for this insanely rare four-figure-ticket funk piece. With a groove so lavish it spills over into two parts, everything about this tickles the right spot. Shrilling horn fills, thumping breaks, swooning harmonies on the chorus and an open top vibe that's so tangible you can feel the breeze. Spotted passing hands for over 2000 quid in the past, this reissue is long, long, long overdue. Easy does it!

Soul
  1. Love Affair (3:09)
  2. We're Gonna Make It (3:18)
Review: Following exceptional reissues from Gloria Barnes and Africano, the currently spotless soul excavators Sunset continue with another outstanding reissue. Last pressed in 1973, this was the Michigan funk troupe's only 45" and has been known to pass hands for several hundred in the last few years. Big breezy soul with jazz-tinged sweeping backing harmonies and slick guitar work from the band's lynchpin Michael Lewis, it's criminal that this was the band's only recording.

Funk
  1. Heartaches & Pain (2:19)
  2. MACK (2:32)
Review: Suncut's latest release offers up an affordably priced reissue of obscure US outfit, Pages' "Heartaches & Pain", a sought-after seven-inch single from 1979. Given that copies of the Sunstruck Records original regularly change hands for several hundred pounds a time, you could argue that they've done soul and funk DJs a massive service. The title track, which was apparently recorded in 1971 by producer Travis Biggs and the obscure Pages, is something of a breezy soul treat - a two-and-a-half minute slab of sweetness rich in attractive vocals, rising horns and a bustling bottom-end groove. Arguably even more impressive is Blaxploitation funk style flipside "Mack", where flanged guitars, punchy horns, sample-ready drum breaks and down-low vocals combine with devastating effect.

Don't Waste My Time (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: SCT 004. Rel: 03 Oct 17
Soul
  1. Jerry Washington - "Don't Waste My Time" (3:45)
  2. Timmy Thomas - "It's What They Can't See" (3:08)
Review: Newsflash: we can't handle Jerry Washington's love. But we sure can handle his fiery soul! Armed with just a touch of jazz on the fills and chorus, there's an upbeat, insistent energy to this Glades reissue that happened to be one of his last singles. Meanwhile on the B, fellow Glades alumni Timmy Thomas winds us right down with much more of a sensual soul ballad in the form of the swooning "What They Can't See". Two stunning sides of soul for two very different occasions; Suncut deliver the goods once again.
