Changeappella
Review: "Don't let your mind change, don't let your spirit change...don't let the world change you". These words, spoken by DJ Bone himself, echo through this funky Detroit gem. Surrounded by Bone's tribal, funky drums and even funkier alien bassline, "Change" sends a message. As soon as the beat drops you feel as if you're a part of this funky conversation. The tonal message is given, deciphered and then translated by Bone, resulting in one of the deepest and most soulful release on Subject Detroit to date.

Huh
Review: DJ Bone forges ahead by trying to remind listeners how important soul and spirit are to music. As he says: "To me music has always been an advanced form of communication. I feel that most of today's electronic music fails miserably at telling a story, communicating and conveying emotion. All of these lost elements are parts of what comprise my new musical reality".

Deep Down
Motherland
Review: Spirit plays a great role in DJ Bone's music and DJ sets. "Longevity 4" journeys from Motherland Africa to North America. "Motherland" is sharp beats and stabbing rhythms symbolizing the chaos and anger during the abduction of slaves in Africa. "Deep Down" is a negro spiritual with cries of pain and sorrow from the souls who "Survived" the passage. Very powerful, one side is housey the other is Advanced Black Music (ABM).

Struggle 5
Review: DJ Bone brings to life through his music the struggles he faces on a daily basis. Haters, jealousy, racism and classism are a few of the obstacles Bone has overcome and continues to fight against. Being true to himself and staying 100% independent as an individual Bone has broken down barriers and accomplished as much if not more than most companies/groups/cliques in electronic music. Struggle is stripped down electronic funk on a most intricate level.

Here To Stay (Won't Fade Away)
Detroit Is Soul
Detroit Is Hard
Review: A diverse and damaging three track EP from Detroit legend DJ Bone, The Detroit EP Part 1 sees the producer exploring and exhibiting Detroit techno musically, figuratively and spiritually. The melancholy vocal refrain and ethereal pads that float through "here To Stay (Won't Stay Away" recall his classic "We Control The Beat", while "Detroit Is Soul" offers a more upbeat percussive tool filled with futuristic synths. "Detroit Is Hard" rounds things out, offering a more minimal track comprised of arpeggio and meaty drums. If you don't know DJ Bone yet, this is a great place to start.

What He Said
I Do
Rhythm, Soul, Funk
Review: Label boss DJ Bone mans the controls for the 38th release on Subject Detroit, laying down a typically fierce, three pronged auditory attack. "What He Said" tactfully yet forcefully treads the line between house and techno, cherry picking physiognomies from each side of that ever-blurring line and constructing something fresh but bristling with familiar Subject Detroit elegances. A favourite fixture from Bone's more recent DJ sets, "I Do" sees bubbling, arpeggiated chords simmer and swoop from foreground to background loosely as one solitary, remanipulated ticking hat keeps things in formation. Watch out for the thunderous, doubled-up drum arrangement that crashes in to the picture out of nowhere! B Side track "Rhythm Soul Funk" is a genuine hard hitter and another that tiptoes between the old school and the nouveau.

Review: Detroit techno maestro DJ Bone has been on prolific form of late, from his collaboration with Deetron to his own steady stream of sharply realised output on his Subject Detroit label. Now he's back with a new album, Beyond, and it's as advanced and keenly executed as you'd expect. From the echo chamber synth flourishes of "Multiples Of Self" to the low-end grind of "In The Deep," there is plenty for Bone fans to chew on here, with a continued focus on expressive synth work as first mooted with the "A Piece Of Beyond" LP earlier this year. "Rosedale Park" is a clattering, Rhodes-embellished track primed for damage in the dance, while "Bound To Move" equally brings the peak time heat.

Review: Detroit techno hero DJ Bone is ever prolific these days, with his Differ-Ent alias releasing an epic triple LP release on Don't Be Afraid last year. A Piece Of Beyond marks the second DJ Bone studio album, and it finds him in an exploratory mood. "It Begins" is a unique exercise in synth wobbles and military drum programming, while "The Stalker" heads into the deepest and farthest corners of the quintessential Motor City techno sound. "The Chase" takes on a cosmic, break-infected stance that calls to mind spiritual jazz as much as techno, while there's more classic styles to be enjoyed on "Dreamers 9" and the absolutely stomping "Sweat".

Review: DJ Bone is a Detroit titan. He plays on the decks with high energy and next-level skill that few can match - which is why they call him the Terminator. He pulls no punches in the studio either, crafting all killer no-filler club weaponry as exemplified here by his new album Further. This is top-level techno on his own Subject Detroit label with lashings of machine soul, futuristic ideals and evocative atmospheres. Some cuts sink into deep inner grooves and take you on a mindful trip and some are more wildly expressive, but all of them bang in the club.

That D Beat (Deetron remix) (9:41)
Blue Bird (8:01)
Blue Bird (Filtered) (5:31)
Blue Bird (DJ Bone remix) (10:06)
Review: After their first seismic collaboration back in 2016, DJ Bone and Deetron are back in action as The Storytellers and they've got six new mixes of impeccable techno for you to sink your teeth into. "That D Beat" comes first - a brittle, rasping monster of a track with frantic urgency and experimentation in equal measure, which then gets softened out a touch with the human elements that feed into the "Camouflaged" version. Deetron's standalone mix of "That D Beat" is a wholly different proposition made of deep, dubby synth expressions without losing the rhythmic energy of the original. "Blue Bird" is a gorgeous slice of machine soul that reaches for the stratosphere, only to take on a kind of bombastic heft when tweaked for the "Filtered" version. Then Bone does a powerful finishing move on "Blue Bird" that matches the strong melodic strokes of the track with his own uncompromising artistic signature - a match made in techno heaven.
