Review: This new album from Benny Sings comes in various different formats - a blue vinyl included, while this version is a straight back wax copy. It features Amsterdam-based artist Benny Sings - who recently had his ART album reissued on Sings - returning with an all new and new eighth solo studio album. For the first time, it is one that finds him working with a single producer throughout - and that producer is the well known beatmaker Mr Kenny Beats. It was a partnership that came together after a chat over social media and the pair immediately felt comfortable with each other. Benny instructed Kenny that he wanted to make the biggest record he has to date and that's what they have done.

Review: Singer, songwriter and producer Eddie Chacon has enjoyed a blooming solo career in recent years ever since the release of his album 'Pleasure, Joy And Happiness'. As it turned out, Chacon was a deft maker of lo-fi, funk and lounge bits, over which his whispery voice would effortlessly glide. The trend continues with 'Sundown', his second solo album and debut for Stones Throw. Made in Ibiza, using, among other things, what is alleged to be the only Fender Rhodes keyboard on the island, this album is yet another experimental lounge music extravaganza, not to mention a personal reflection on the self, tempered by long listening sessions to spiritual jazz in the sun.

Review: The superb Shades of Yesterday is an all-new covers album by the triple Grammy Award-nominated producer, musician, and songwriter, DJ Harrison. With almost every instrument played and produced by the man himself, the album is a deeply personal homage to the musical influences that have defined his work. It also draws from his upbringing in Richmond and his journey to musical prominence with re-imagined tracks by beloved artists such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Ohio Players, Donald Fagen, and more. Each song is a reflection of Harrison's fondest memories and a testament to his evolution as a musician and adds up to a fantastically nostalgic trip with a new school edge.

Review: Stone's Throw has never really made any wrong moves in our opinion, and here the label puts its full force behind a deceptively powerful album. Taking us to places that are deeper than perhaps what the imprint is best known for, this is immersive, hypnotic, otherworldly stuff made from a variety of plugged in machines, analogue and otherwise, including a semi-modular synth. The result is a journey-style collection packed with atmosphere but one that's also painstakingly detailed and textured. Sound waves are rendered almost visible by the movements, drones, tracks and other pieces here, drum and effects machines producing the kind of noises that mesmerise and suck you in further as time passes. Tunes to get lost in, the only remaining question is whether anyone will ever want to return.

Review: "Ruff Draft", originally released in 2003, is a sought-after album that remains the elusive key release in J Dilla's catalogue. This has freewheeling, in-your-face synthesizers, and an uncharacteristically sample-heavy approach that is as banging as it is experimental.

Review: Beatitudes is an album of ten instrumental hip-hop tracks inspired by 20th century gospel recordings. Produced by one J Rocc (known as the acclaimed DJ and turntablist for Madlib's many shows), the album is a departure from the artist's smudgier, beatsmith affairs. Each track is as smooth as a baby's forehead, and/or as pleasing as a wild fig dropped into one's mouth by an attentive servant on a hot Verona day. Gospel samples whirl around like ghosts, haunting each beat, which in turn sound wonkier than an array of unoiled see-saws. The album's cover is an homage to the mysterious cult artist known only as Harvey, known for designing many surrealist-religious gospel album covers from the 1960s onwards.

This one takes on the ideas of transition, of growing old and rising fiends, looking for new purpose as life changes and trying to stay hopeful. It features a host of the beat maker's mates such as Sara Sithi-Amnuai on trumpet, Will Logan on drums and Paul Castelluzzo on guitar, and also includes some great covers of The Cure's 'In Between Days' and Roy Ayers's 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine.'

And now he offers up this splendid double 12". It is a masterful mix of pensive piano, jazz chord work and downtempo drums. There are lush, synth laced soundscapes for late night lovers, funk-fuelled, sax-driven jams and then cosmic, starry-eyed mood pieces that encourage your mind to wander. It is another essential release from this fine talent.

Review: Kiefer Shackleford is back on Stones Throw with more of his elevated beatdowns and dextrous piano flex. The LA-based artist first cropped up on Leaving Records back in 2017 and now he comfortably slides into his fifth album in a lean, sun-soaked dream of drums slung way down low and right to the back, leaving more room for his illustrious keys and synths to pirouette over the top. It's a simple recipe, but the secret is in the ingredients. The drums shuffle and slide with crooked flair, and the melodies burst skywards whether it's classic piano, woozy Rhodes or fluttering modulations Shackleford chooses to sing through.

Review: Having recently unfurled one synth-laden future jazz-funk classic (John Carroll Kirby's superb Blowout), Stones Throw delivers another fabulous album informed by the intersection between jazz, funk and synth sounds. Of course, Kiefer Shackleford's work has always been far more informed by hip-hop than Kirby's, and that remains a key point of difference on It's OK B U. While Shackleford loves showcasing his own piano and synth work (and it's those elements that frequently catch the ear), the accompanying beats - a mixture of head-nodding, Guru and Dilla style grooves, Flying Lotus style experiments, chopped-up breaks, wayward Dam Funk style affairs and slipped jazz rhythms - are equally as potent.

Review: When it was first released digitally this time last year, John Carroll Kirby's Conflict was promoted as a "balm for a time of crisis". Now finally available on vinyl, the collection's soothing, poignant and melancholic piano pieces feel every bit as essential as they did this time last year. Much of the music was inspired by the composer's meditations on the fallout from war, though there were other perhaps more trivial questions he felt needed answering through music (see 'Who Will Replace Brandon Lee' and his musical interpretation of an imagined visit from boxer Anthony Joshua). The results are uniformly beautiful, with Kirby cannily combining slow, sometimes expansive piano motifs with ghostly ambient chords and occasional deep, warm basslines. If you enjoy the work of Nils Frahm, you'll love this.

Review: John Carroll Kirby has worked with the likes of Solange, Frank Ocean, Sebastian Tellier and many more, but he's equally celebrated as a solo artist who returns to Stones Throw for his fifth LP. This time around, the album has been made in tandem with incredible Canadian artist Yu Su, who lends her touch to the production around Kirby's infectious keys. The album is largely instrumental save for an uplifting guest spot from Laraaji on opening track 'Dawn of New Day', but as with previous Kirby albums he has more than enough to say in the conviction of his playing. Ever chameleonic, his sound on Dance Ancestral is removed from the solo piano ambience of Conflict, but as ever Kirby's deep-rooted musicality soars, buffeted by Yu Su's fantasy confections. If you're in search of something to make you feel good, this record has positive energy for days.

Review: There's a definite sense of "time and place" throughout John Carrol Kirby's latest album, Blowout. He recorded it all during a recent trip to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, "between 5am wake-up calls from orpopendola birds and psychedelic sunsets", drawing inspiration from the people, music and nature that surrounded him. It's certainly a joyful and colourful affair - despite his insistence that it's about "enjoying yourself even though life is tough, before the candle blows out" - with Kirby mixing sparkling, often kaleidoscopic 1980s electrofunk synth sounds with warming grooves, pastoral woodwind instrumentation, and musical motifs that draw on his love of jazz-funk and fusion. It's basically a sensationally summery affair whose mostly subtly nods to Costa Rican musical culture only enhance the album.

Review: The ever-prolific John Carroll Kirby is back on Stones Throw barely a minute after releasing no less than two albums last year. Of course, no one is complaining when the quantity is matched with the quality Kirby brings, and Blowout is bursting with the laid back musicality and inherent joy Kirby is so well-loved for. The album was recorded during a recent stay in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, and you can sense the surroundings feeding into the music, from the 5am wake up call from the oropendola birds to the blissful sunsets. This is smooth as silk jazz funk with a mission: to help you enjoy life. Consider this mission accomplished.

Review: Following his last album for Stone's Throw, and a well received ambient record, John Carroll Kirby's Septet album was recorded live in the studio with a range of talents playing keys, vibes, bass, percussion and drums. The composer and keyboardist leads the charge and approached the album wanting to play "with the chaos of jazz fashion in the 70's/80's, bands like Weather Report and Miles Davis." He sure does that but there is beauty in the madness, with plenty of lush and golden keys dancing above lithe and ad hoc rhythms. A new school classic, for sure.

A concept album of sorts - the tall tale behind it being that the beats were created in 1988 by an infant version of our musical hero after he climbed inside an SP-12 sampler and mastered the machine - the set sees Knxwledge sprint through a beat-tape style assortment of short, sweet and often sublime instrumentals that make use of a variety of period samples. Given his track record, it's an impressive album, regardless whether the beats were genuinely made when he was in "Nike diapers" (as the press release amusingly claims) or not.

The prolific LA-based musician and producer cuts a little more loose and gets more free on this long player though retains all of the signature elements of his much-loved sound. It is full of rhythmic invention and plenty of bright melodic flair though it also has a whimsical sense of humour across its many bitesize but brilliant tracks.

With dreamy vocals, catchy melodies, and experimental instrumentation, the duo have been said to channel the influence of classic French composers like Serge Gainsbourg and Michel Legrand into their work, nailing a filmic atmosphere that is otherwise lent to a Mario Kart-esque bedroom pop.

Review: Is there a more famous nutcase in music than Lee Scratch Perry? The legendary producer is still very much on the musical money, though, no matter how weird he gets in person. This record for Stones Throw finds him working with Peaking Lights' Aaron Coyes and Argentinian dubber Ivan Diaz Mathe on a series of heavyweight tunes that are brilliantly psychedelic. The title track is a cosmic stepper then "No Age" is a wandering dub with oodles of trippy effects and stoner leads that make way for some of his textbook vocal musings on "Magik." After immersive closer "No Age" you'll be keen to do it all again.

Review: Peyton's debut full-length PSA finally lands on Stones Throw having been started back in 2018 with help from producers including Vicky Farewell, Julie Lewis and Biako. The Houston singer and songwriter exudes real confidence across all of these tracks, with self-love a key motif throughout. This is a record that will have your thoughts turning to warm summer days and back yard BBQs thank to its gloriously sunny and breezy atmospheres. Featured guests like Brice Blanco and Ian McGilber bring their own steez but Peyton's signature sound always remains front and centre as the artist muses on love, friendship and life itself.

Review: Stimulator Jones hails from Roanoke, Virginia, a place of beautiful nature and lots of wildlife. That is capture din the music and the artwork of his new album, which is packed with home studio jams. Soul, disco, dub and R&B all infuse this collection of instrumental beat tracks. The artist himself says these are "pure, uncut, straight forward beats - no clever arrangements, no cerebral overindulgence, no cute stuff, no vocals." But that's not to say they are compelling. Some go deep and dirty, some are sweet as honey and others drift by like a lone cloud in a clear blue summer sky. Perfect for lazy afternoons and stoner sessions.

Review: Brittney Denise Parks aka Sudan Archives has released some of the most fascinating music of the last couple of years. What makes it so unique is Parks' voice, which tumbles down to melancholic depths or soars to uplifting highs. On this new album, though, she makes more of her own virtuoso violin playing, stretching the sounds in all manner of wonderful directions, couching her voice in lush sonic layers. There is an orchestral, chamber music feel to this most grandiose of works, and it is one that feels rich, poignant and moving from start to finish. Smart, inventive, but soulful, it might be one of the albums of the year.

Review: On her second album, Sudan Archives is bringing it all back home. As a reflection on LA and Cincinnati, where she was raised, Natural Brown Prom Queen sees the Stones Throw icon pushing her craft and charisma further into the stratosphere. This time around she's let other people in on the production process, teaming up with MonoNeon, Simon on the Moon, Hi-Tek and Nosaj Thing, and also invited her family in on vocal duties. The sound is as versatile as her vocal style, and it's undoubtedly already a shoe-in for those coveted album of the year lists which start to loom on the horizon around this time of year. This is essential stuff, make no mistake.
