Hinde (4:04)
Hinde (Julien Dyne rework) (5:31)
Review: Originally released in Kenya way back in 1987, "Hinde" was the sole single from an obscure outfit called African Vibration. The track has since gone on to become something of a sought-after gem; a sparse, drum machine-driven, synthesizer-sporting jam that offers a uniquely tropical and wholeheartedly East African take on electro/synth-pop fusion. Happily, Soundway has decided to issue it on 12" for the first time, having previously included in on 2016's superb "Kenya Special: Volume 2" compilation. The brilliant original comes accompanied by a fresh Julian Dyne rework that makes more of the original's fluttering, sun-kissed synths and rainforest sound effects. It's a little deeper, dreamier and exceptionally blissful; in fact, you could almost describe it as being "Balearic".

Review: Charles Amoah started his career as a drummer but became a disco and highlife mainstay. He dropped his Sweet Vibration album in 1984 on Milos Music and it has since become a collector's classic. Finding a copy nowadays is hard and expensive so be sure to lap up this reissue which features backing vocals from Petra Amoah, bass guitar from Eline Thomas and guitar, synths, trumpet and much more from a whole host of other guests. Musically it is a joyous vision of disco and highlife with plenty of mad studio effects, lush guitars and candied vocals.

Review: Soundway fans should be more than familiar with Pedro Coquenao's Batida project, with the Lisbon-based Kuduro fusionist dropping a killer self-titled album on the label in 2012. Supplemented by several 12" releases, this has laid down the groundwork of a relationship between Coquenao and Soundway which was always likely to result in further releases, such as the album. Dois is a fourth Batida album overall and find Coquenao at his most confident, retaining the feel of previous albums but widening the stylistic remit, working with guests and utilising more live instrumentation. Afro house, benga, semba are thrown into the mix along with Kuduro, whilst Coquenao slips in the odd Clash sample as well as referencing his heritage with Angolan movies and afro-beat tracks plundered for usage.

Review: Batida have been a key part of Soundway's successful 2012, debuting on a rather nice looking split 7"alongside A.J. Holmes & The Hackney Empire before unveiling their debut self titled album in March. For those who might have missed out on that wondrous long player, a welcome chance to indulge in the blend of traditional Angolan sounds and contemporary Kuduro is offered here with the Alegria 12". The record features three of our favourite album cuts extended and reworked by Batida creator Pedro Coquenao alongside Portuguese producer Beat Laden and Brazilian Maga Bo. The title track has instant appeal, with sampled guitar licks offering true heritage and bass heavy Kuduro rhythms providing real thump - it sounds even more joyous extended to over six minutes by Coquenao. Beat Laden's take on "Puxa" offers a curious dub heavy Portuguese slant on UK Garage aesthetics, whilst Mago Bo displays a dizzying understanding of polyrhythmic percussion on a delightful remix of "Cuka".

Review: The Black Truth Rhythm Band is renowned for its Afrobeat fusion - a sound that very much epitomizes the vibrant spirit of 1970s funk and soul. Their iconic album 'Ifetayo (Love Excels All)' stands as a testament to their musical prowess and social consciousness. It has been fully remastered here with all its pulsating rhythms, infectious brass, and impassioned vocals transcending time to deliver a message of love and unity. Rooted in the African diaspora experience, the band's music serves as a rallying cry for social justice and cultural pride. Ifetayo remains a timeless work that still resonates with audiences worldwide thanks to its potent blend of groove and meaning.

Review: Colombian combo Bomba Estereo have been causing quite a stir, particularly in the United States, where their tropical blend of South American instrumentation, folksy vocals and contemporary electronic elements has been greeted with rapturous reviews. Certainly, there's something pleasing about the effortlessly summery nature of their songs, and their willingness to experiment is positively thrilling. Contrast, for example, the Cumbia-goes-rap of the sweaty "Rocas", the next-level Latin pop of "Pure Love" and the lazy shuffle of "Lo Que Tengo Que Decir"; while hugely diverse musically, they make comfortable bedfellows. That's the mark of a band at the top of their game.

Review: Sidiku is an impressive gentleman. A Ghanaian athlete turned musician with over 16 albums to his name he shook his country's music industry up as the chairman of the Ghanaian Copyright Society and now president of the Musicians Union of Ghana and the vice president of International Federation Of Musicians. He can also lay down a mean hook; "Anokwar (Truth)" is a firing slice of late 70s synth-infused afrofunk while "Music" comes a little later in the 80s with its rapid synth boogie groove and big Fanti chants. Righteous.

Review: The Busy Twist run a really interesting operation... Inspired by the UK's bass movement, the London-based producers have recorded extensively in their native Ghana, giving this a truly international tongue. A fine case in point is Drumtalk's remix of the brilliantly titled "Auntie Fatty": riddled with all manner of chopped up chants and percussion, there's a very familiar riff on the drop. "Floor Excitement" is another highlight; the vocals are reminiscent of a Wookie plate but delivered with heartwarming gusto. Technically this is an EP... But with such a bounty of tropical treats, this is almost album material.

Review: GC Cameron was born and raised in McCall Creek, Mississippi, and by the age of 22 he was already famous having joined Motown Records. He was signed up as lead singer of the legendary group The Spinners and had several web recover tunes and a few hits such as 'It's A Shame,' which was co-written and produced by Stevie Wonder. After that, Cameron left the group and went solo and teamed up with Harvey Faqua, Greg Crockett and Elgie Stover to record his best-ever work, which now makes its way onto this fine four-track EP courtesy of Soundway.

Review: As NYC multi-instrumentalist Chico prepares for a new album in 2013, we're treated to a selection of cuts from his previously limited "Manifest Tone" series. Fusing sprightly electro boogie with the zest of D-Train, the jazz fluency of Roy Ayers and the more modern, complex production presentation of The Mexican Institute Of Sound, it's a really interesting blend of flavours that spans decades. From the sad Cuban dirge "El Paraguay" to the two-step meets classic Knuckles-out garage "His Favourite Thing" via the Kenny Dope-meets-Fela Kuti minded rhythm of "Luz" this oozes unique character, creativity and musicianship.

Review: Chico Mann seems to be able to turn his hand to almost anything. Having previously impressed as a soulful beatmaker (2007's Manifest Tone Volume One on Kindred Spirits) and afrobeat/afro-Cuban fusionist (2010's Analog Drift), third album Magical Thinking sees him prove his boogie, synth-pop and electrofunk credentials. Predictably, he hits the spot, delivering an authentic mix of vintage synths, boogie guitars, sweaty drum machine rhythms (see the excellent "Long Time Gone") and strong songs ("Comes and Goes", "Same Old Clown"). A string of Dam Funk-ish jams ("Esta Bueno") and Cuban-influenced electrofunk workouts ("Vivito") only adds to the impression than Mann makes music for endless summers. Recommended.

Review: Chico Mann and Kendra Morris combine sublimely on the Same Old Clown 12" through Soundway which is a thrilling taster of what's to come on Magical Thinking, the multi instrumentalist's third solo LP. Whilst the Antibalas guitarist has remained close to his Afrobeat roots on previous long players for Wax Poetics and Kindred Spirits, his new album is said to offer a more expansive portrayal of Chico's tastes taking in latin, freestyle, funk and boogie and "Same Old Clown" certainly suggests this is a rewarding approach. Mann's classic squelching 80s electro funk arrangement is the perfect backdrop for Kendra's slinky vocals and the accompanying remixes from Linkwood and Kon only serve to show her range, with the Firecracker man's boogie house update our personal favourite here at Juno.

Review: Bouncing his time between Antibalas and his Marcos Garcia and Chico Mann projects, Chico returns after several years of silence with a sweet slice of lolloping broken soul. With its soft padded synths and cotton wool hug of Kendra Morris's vocals, there's a delicate tumble to proceedings as we nod and slide into a sound that's remained in its own soul universe since emerging almost 20 years ago. When done as well and with as much authenticity as this, it's timeless.

Highlights include the weeping six string lament "Yebo Blues", the hip-swaying lilt on album opener "Enoviyin" and the more vocal focused "Cotocun Gba Gounke".

A truly unique fusion of east-meets-west sonics, their collaborative creations are instantly distinctive as Debruit's off-kilter synth funk and bass brews are coated with the stunning cries and moans of Alsarah. Highlights include the delicate harmonies and shimmering synths of "Jibal Alnuba", the naked vocal beauty of "Loulia" and the boogie bass and dramatic strings and pipes of "Khartoum". Truly stunning... Happy travels.

Review: A quick glance at the cover should tell you that Diron Animal is a unique artist. While his dazzling clothing choices are never less than remarkable, it's the music that he serves up on this debut solo album that's most arresting. Now based in Portugal, the singer/producer grew up in an Angolan ghetto, and many of the album's multi-lingual lyrics focus on the effects of poverty on children. Musically, it's typical of the vibrant African-European dancefloor fusion scene found in Portugal, offering a unique and kaleidoscopic fusion of kuduro, traditional African rhythms, contemporary electrofunk, South African rap and dizzyingly bright and breezy, synth-heavy workouts. As you can probably tell, we're struggling to accurately describe it, but that's no bad thing: it's a truly unique proposition.

On one side, Rully Djohan delivers a psychedelic organ version of 'Bubuj Bulan', a classic Indonesian song by Benny Corda. On the other side, Munif sings a raw funk tune in Arabic called 'Naghm El Uns'. It amounts to nothing less than a fascinating glimpse into the diverse musical scene of Java at the time.

Review: Evidently the alias of someone already established, you can forgive the diversionary tactics of East London's DrumTalk when the music he makes is of the standard shown on this killer Soundway 12". No stranger to the label having previously contributed a remix to The Busy Twist's excellent Friday Night EP, DrumTalk has also graced the likes of More Music, Sofrito and Huntleys & Palmers with his distinct brand of dancefloor output. A cross pollination of sounds derived from London, NYC, Detroit and Chicago blended with the polyrhythms of West Africa, it's not for nothing that DrumTalk often gets compared to Dan Snaith's Daphni. There's a confidence and diversity to the four productions that mark DrumTalk out as an established producer clearly looking to be judged on music alone and it's an impressive statement.

Review: New Zealand's Julien Dyne has a highly developed strain of song-led house music which he's been cultivating over a run of albums for BBE and Soundway. Three years after his standout Teal, he's back with a new album featuring a heavyweight cast of collaborators and yet further developments in his instrument-embellished sound. You can't miss the honey-coated tones of Joe Dukie from Fat Freddy's Drop on 'Resolution', but there's also repeat appearances from Lord Echo, Ladi 6 and Mara TK, not to mention Che Fu and Troy Kingi. Balancing out a danceable sensibility with the passion for crafting beautiful songs, Dyne once again elevates his craft with stunning results.

Review: In typical Soundway fashion, our favourite outer national label is back with a special new album from the depths of Africa's Uganda. The musician in question, Jesse Hackett, is an Englishman who decided to embark on a long and life-defining journey into the heart of Africa to arrive at the source of it all. Tagged as 'post-modern African psychedelia', Ennanga Vision isn't just an album, it's a distinctive vibe - an approach to compiling a diverse range of genres and styles from one single country. Among the many personalities encountered by Hackett in Uganda, multi-instrumentalist Albert Ssempeke is perhaps the most respected of all of them, and we're glad to say that the man has been a crucial part of this album's recording. In terms of the music itself, don't assume that you'll be faced with one sound; while each track on here is unique, Hackett's contribution has been to align them with a single thread, or rather, a sonic aesthetic that features throughout. The best way to describe this is 'minimalist bleep', an ingredient which can be heard across each one of these incredible little experiments. Whether it's children singing or 10-but drum machines rattling, Ennanga Vision will take you in and immerse you in something new and special.

Review: Eelco Topper's latest release as FELBM is a conceptual affair, with the Dutch producer delivering a 38-minute piece (here split into two parts for vinyl, each of which finishes with a locked groove to give the impression of the track creating an infinite musical loop) that mixes and matches tape loops, cyclical samples, repeating melodic motifs and pastoral-sounding snatches of flute, bansuri, bass trumpet, saxophone and pedal steel. While the concept, inspired by the artist's thoughts about 'the cyclical nature of the world around him" is important, of more significance is the utter brilliance of the piece itself - a genuinely gorgeous, warming, atmospheric and ambient-leaning concoction tailor-made for imagined afternoons in the countryside and woodland walks at dawn.
