Horace Andy - "Fever"
Im & The Agg - "The Flue"
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

"Fever" is one of Horace Andy's biggest hits. Amazingly, it has never been given its own release so Studio One has done the right thing and put it out on a super loud 12" for the first time. It first landed way back in 1973 before Andy rose to contemporary fame appearing with Massive Attack on five of their albums, but still hits hard. The lush vocals sit well in the swinging drums and bass, and makes it a sure fire dance floor destroyer that won't hang around. Comes accompanied with a Cedric "Im" Brooks instrumental version on the flip.

I'm In Love With A Dreadlocks (instrumental) (3:22)
Review: Brown Sugar are pioneers of the British reggae scene, particularly within the lover's rock niche. The group's fine discography has been honed in on by the great folk at Soul Jazz who put together a superb compilation I'm In Love With A Dreadlocks back in 2018. It focused on the booth of the Lovers Rock scene in the late 70s and now the title track from it gets pressed up to its own tidy 7". The super deep and luscious original is backed with a fine instrumental to remind us just how pivotal this group really was.

Review: Brown Sugar, formed in 1976 and made up of teenage soul darlings Pauline Catlin, Caron Wheeler and Carol Simms, recorded their breakout lovers' rock single 'Black Pride' in a period when racial tension in the UK was at its most rife. Brought to Denis Bovell's time-honoured Lovers Rock label, it was one of the many reggae releases that defined the eponymous substyle. Now a black 12" repress comes to 1000 lucky first-come buyers.

Can I Be Your Squeeze (2:31)
Take Care Your Homework Friend (2:27)
Review: The unequalled Soul Jazz label is serving up some monster funk this month and they don't come much bigger than these two cuts from Chuck Carbo. Opener 'Can I Be Your Squeeze' is a super catchy, break heavy and funk fulled party jam to destroy the floor. Written and produced by the celebrated Eddie Bo, it comes with big drums from New Orleans stick man James Black. On the flip is the ever so slightly more mellow but not less dance 'Take Care Your Homework Friend.' These have long been hard to find and now come pressed nice and loud on fresh wax.

Alton Ellis - "I'm Still In Love" (3:27)
The Soul Vendors - "Just A Bit Of Soul" (3:06)
Review: Alton Ellis' "I'm Still In Love" is one of Jamaica's most famous songs. It has a rich history, too, that was the inspiration for Althea and Donna's 1997 smash "Uptown Top Ranking" and here it gets a loud-cut 12" pressing that allows it to soar. It's a track full of longing, with dusty keys and a natty bassline finished off with gorgeous vocals. The flipside houses the Soul Vendors' "Just A Bit Of Soul" featuring Jackie Mittoo. It's a more upbeat ditty with bumpier drums and jazz flecked keys to get you grooving.

People Make The World Go Round (version) (2:58)
Review: Hortense Ellis was the sister of Jamaican reggae legend Alton Ellis, but this familial link made her contribution to music no less powerful. Her 1973 cover of The Stylistics' hit 'People Make The World Go Round', released two years earlier, is a snappy, tight, organ-driven rendition in reggae, and is a powerful paean to the principle of people over profit. A Studio One classic, it's one of many to come under the umbrella of Sir Coxsone Dodd, and now comes reissued by Soul Jazz Records with the original dub version on the flip.

Review: There is currently only one copy of this on Discogs and it is listed at a rather eye watering L1200. Thankfully this reissue means you can own an undeniably brilliant tune for a much more reasonable price. It is a seminal New Orleans joint from the main man Eddie Bo who made it for the hugely popular group The Explosions. Juanita Brooks is the powerhouse soul sister who provides the vocals and on the other side is something just as good - a deep soul gem to warm you to your core.

Dub Specialist - "Feel Like Jumping" (part 2) (3:45)
Review: Stone cold classic alert! First released on Studio One back in the late 1970s and a guaranteed reggae floor-filler ever since, 'Feel Like Jumping' is not only one of Coxsone Dodd's most potent productions, but also one of Marcia Griffiths' greatest moments. Now available again on a heavyweight vinyl pressing with extra bass-weight, the track us built around an infectious rhythm, dancing horn riffs, sweet backing vocals and a life-affirming lead vocal from Griffiths' celebrating the sheer joy of dancing. The flipside Dub Specialist revision is superb too - a genuinely bone-shaking, sub-heavy dancefloor dub that places echoing snippets of Griffiths' lead vocal and reverberating horns at the heart of the action.

Review: In 1984, Jamaican-born producer Tony Williams gifted the British jazz-funk scene with two exceptional 12" records, both now rare gems. One of these, Nat King Cool's 'Checking Out,' showcases a fusion of MFSB's 'Mysteries of the World' with quintessential UK Brit-funk vibes. Originally released on the Tai Wan label, this single remains as fresh today as it did in 1984, with its captivating flip-side instrumental. Remastered from tapes, these essential 80s Brit-funk tracks are presented on pristine vinyl, adorned with bespoke repro-labels, and packaged in a groovy Soul Jazz/Funk Masters house bag, which means it looks as good as it sounds.

Review: It can be hard to keep up with the different days devoted to recorded music, from Record Store Day to Album Day to Black Friday, but two really cares so long as the tunes keep coming. And they don't come much finer than this - Ripple's self-titled album was originally released in 1973 and soon became known as a rare groove, funk and deep soul classic. Some 50 years on and it has been remastered to sound as good as ever and remind us why the band were right up there with peers such as Funkadelic, Kool and the Gang and The Blackbyrds, all of whom served up equally brilliant mixes of rock, soul, photo disco and funk. The is the first time this one has been back in print for some 30 years.

Review: Having previously explored the roots of New Orleans funk, the dusty-fingered diggers at Soul Jazz have turned their attention to the city's soul scene. As with so many of the label's compilations, New Orleans Soul does a terrific job of telling the story of 16 years of homegrown soul (1960-76), with extensive sleeve notes telling the little-known stories of some of the scene's primary protagonists. Musically, it's top notch - unsurprisingly - with the likes of Aaron Neville, Barbara West, Eddie Bo and Willie Tee variously delivering smouldering, gospel-influenced sweetness, stomping Northern-style soul and horn-heavy songs powered by the distinctive pulse of rhythm and blues.

Review: A must for all disco aficionados, Soul Jazz have curated an incredible two part collection that explores the very best independently released disco releases during the genre's golden glory days. Prodding and poking disco's most sensitive areas where it merges sensuously with boogie and soul, there are some truly beautiful moments here such as the proto hip-house street vibes of The Sunburst Band's "Easton Assassin", the unrelenting self-referential stomps of "Disco Madness" and the percussive funk hypnosis of "Dance To The Beat Freakout". Coinciding with an exciting new tome entitled Disco - An Encyclopaedic Guide To Cover Art Of Disco - it seems disco fans have a lot to get excited about this season. And this is only part one!

Review: The second part of Soul Jazz's immense exploration of independently released, genre-blurring disco tracks from the late 70s/early 80s, the firing fusions and agenda-setting arrangements keep on coming. There's a heavier emphasis on the funk fusions with tracks such as Something Extra's slippery, slinky "Sexy Lady" and the slap bass eyelash flutters of Stwange Poweple's "Get Up" really smelting disco and funk down to their bare naked elements. Elsewhere we're massaged by big string dynamics on Chemistry's "Skateboard" and we get our heads down and boogie like there's no tomorrow on Sugar Bear Johnson's "When Your Jones Come Down". Stunning.

Review: Last year's Delta Swamp Rock collection was one of Soul Jazz's best for some time, offering a rare glimpse into the rock, soul, country, funk and blues fusions that trickled out of the Southern US states in the late '60s and early '70s. This follow-up offers more little known highlights from the swamp rock scene, showcasing a thrilling array of little-known artists. In truth, it's the funk and soul-tinged tracks that most resonate (see Bobby Gentry's "Touch 'Em With Love" and Area Code 615's sweaty, banjo-laden "Ruby"), but there are plenty of other killer tunes that take a more sedate approach. Accompanied, as ever, by exhaustive sleeve notes, it's another essential selection from Soul Jazz.

Review: First released on Soul Jazz in 2011, we now hear a welcome 2023 edition of this curatorial country gem. Delta Swamp Rock compiles and explores the musical and cultural links between the cities of Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Nashville in the 1960s and 70s, where country, rock and soul met at the crossroads in what could only be described as an unholy sonic explosion. Tracks by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joe South, Bobbie Gentry, Area Code 615, Duane and Gregg Allman, Cher, Cowboy, The Allman Brothers Band, Link Wray and Boz Scaggs all appear. There's also 8-page booklet with notes, history and information about the South and its music scene.

As if it wasn't obvious enough, this new 2xLP compiles the most legendary productions to ever ooze from the Studio's walls, thanks to the guidance of producer Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd. Rare music from Horace Andy, Jackie Mittoo and Sound Dimension all abound on this ground-shaking CD, which lies somewhere on the intersection between funk and dub.

Review: Barely a week goes by without another Soul Jazz compilation, and never are they anything else than superb. This time out we're cerated to another collection of tunes from Kingston's seminal Studio One, but rather than the straight up reggae we're used to, it is more of a melting pot of funk, soul, jazz and dub. All of these tunes were written in the 1970s under the watchful eye of studio chief and producer Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd and there is a wealth of deep, sunny, funk cuts that have more than stood the test of time.

Review: Soul Jazz Records continues to trawl through the vast archives of Jamaica's Studio One label and its many offshoots. This time round, they're focusing on uplifting, feel-good rocksteady and soulful reggae cuts from the late 1960s and early '70s. As you'd expect, it's an excellent collection that not only showcases classic cuts and well-worn "riddims", but also obscurities and the sort of rare gems that make reggae collectors go weak at the knees. With such stars as Alton Ellis, John Holt, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the Heptones and Jackie Mittoo all featured, and exhaustive sleeve notes from reggae scholar Rob Chapman, Rocksteady Got Soul is another essential Studio One compilation from the reliable Soul Jazz Records crew.

Last year, Soul Jazz Records began to examine the relationship between protest, politics and music in the "black power era" via a fine compilation released in celebration of Tate Modern's "The Soul of a Nation" exhibition. This follow-up, released to mark the exhibition's move to Brooklyn, continues the story, gathering together another essential selection of jazz and street-funk cuts by African-American artists - both well-known and obscure - who were inspired by the politics of the black power movement and a growing interest in what the label describes as "Afro-centric, polyrhythmical styles of music". The included music is, in some cases, mind-blowing, with highlights including cuts from The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Byron Morris & Unity, Oneness of Juju, Tribe and Don Cherry.
