Review: Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, returns this time under the alias Africans with Mainframes. With fellow Chicagoan Noleian Reusse they have been releasing music under the name Africans with Mainframes for over 15 years now. The KMT LP is the debut album from the group, a collage of apocalyptic Chicago acid meets industrial and transcendental post-house machine funk. Both intense and unique, the album of forward-thinking, experimental, boundary-pushing Afro-futurist electronic music shows why Hieroglyphic Being is regarded as one of the most serious purveyors of experimental electronic music today.

Review: To celebrate the 18th birthday of Soul Jazz Records' first Studio One Dub compilation, a fine collection of rare, hard-to-find and classic dub 'versions' from the vaults of Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd's legendary Studio One stable, the label has decided to reissue it on orange vinyl. If you missed out first time around, it's well worth picking up - not only for the quality of the dub mixes on show (listen out for versions of Horace Andy's 'Skylarkin', Johnny Osbourne's 'Truth and Rights' and Freddie McGregor's 'Bobby Babylon') but also the extensive and authoritative liner notes.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Count Ossie and The Mystic Revelation's 1975 album Tales of Mozambique comes once again as a definitive purple vinyl edition. A critical album for the fusion of reggae with Rastafarian traditional music, Ossie is second only to Bob Marley in terms of being a populariser of the religion's sonic tradition. This cult favourite collates several songs, all of which were recorded and produced with Ossie's entourage in his compound in the hills of Wareika, Kingston. Flutes, shakers and organs conjoin with propulsive drum and bass patterns, producing a deeply mystical and ethereal experience that is nonetheless rooted in communal spirit.

Review: The legendary ESG return with their first new album in nearly five years on Soul Jazz Records. The new album features their trademark stripped down punk/funk style that has spawned a whole generation of fans and bands thirty years on from their first release, the 'Moody' EP on Factory Records. First produced by Martin Hannett, ESG were instantly accepted into the worlds of punk/new wave, hip-hop and dance music-a unique position which still holds true today. Their credentials over their career are incredible and they are today more popular than ever before, last year headlining in the UK at the Triptich, TDK Cross Festivals and All Tomorrows Parties as well as their music appearing in film and TV adverts. From playing at the opening night of Manchester's legendary Hacienda to the closing night of Larry Levan's equally legendary Paradise Garage in New York, ESG have remained one of the all time cult bands. In 2000 Soul Jazz Records released 'A South Bronx Story' which brought their classic music to a new audience. This was followed by the critically acclaimed 'Step Off' and now 'Keep On Moving'.

Review: Amazing 2nd album by ESG, available for the first time on CD and super-loud double vinyl. Soul Jazz Records are re-releasing this classic album by ESG originally issued on 99 Records in New York in1983. ESG are the Scroggins sisters Renee, Valerie and Marie now joined by daughters Nicole and Chistelle who all hail from the South Bronx. Their place in history is legendary, placing them at the heart of post-punk, hip-hop and dance music. Soul Jazz Records have recently released their new album "Keep On Moving" as well as "A South Bronx Story" and "Step Off". "ESG sound like nothing else. Everything else is a distraction." The Guardian, "Simply defies passing musical fashions" The Observer, "ESG still sound light years ahead". Blues & Soul.

Review: Curated as part of the iconic street artist's Tate exhibition this year, The World Of Keith Haring unites many of the talented souls Keith knew, or was inspired by, during his prolific rise as one of the most vital cultural spokesmen through the 70s and 80s. Soundtracking the gritty downtown NYC streets he made his first mark on, this limited collection captures the whole melting pot from b-boy culture with cuts such as "E.T Boogie" and "Bump N Grind", raw boogie and soul ("Over & Over") and pure drama ("The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us"). A powerful collection as striking and relatable as his own signature.

Review: Definitely not to be confused with the chain of high end steak houses that have established themselves in cities across the UK, Hawksmoor is actually the lone project of James McKeown, and is a direct nod to the Hawksmoor churches of London. It's also an ode to German Krautrock pioneers of the 1970s, such as Cluster, Roedelius, and Michael Rother. But this isn't a case of simply rehashing the golden years of a genre that has inspired a huge cult following, particularly among musicians, since it first evolved as a mutation of psyche, punk, prog, synth and various other then-nascent sounds. Instead, think of a haunting post-modern electronic symphony made on all-analogue equipment. An homage to the past in a vision of the future, it deserves its place as one of Soul Jazz's few non-archival releases.

Review: For the first time since 2016, Jamal Moss has pitched up on Soul Jazz with a typically eccentric and mind-altering full-length excursion. As you'd expect, The Red Room is another triumph - an inspirational collection of otherworldly and melodious cuts that effortlessly combine elements from Moss's many major inspirations. One minute, you're wigging out to his jacking, piano-heavy fusion of gospel house and synth-jazz ("The Seduction Syndrome"), the next he's laying down a chunk of deep space ambient with Terry Riley synthesizer cycles ("Awake and Energize"). And so it goes on, breathlessly joining the dots between Sun Ra, Juan Atkins, Adonis, Steve Reich, L.I.E.S and Jeff Mills while sounding thoroughly different to all of them.

Review: It seems like hardly a week goes by without Jamal Moss putting out a record - and this week is no exception. Originally released on a homemade CDR and sold through the Sounds of the Universe shop in London, this ten-track release is typical of Moss' dance floor sound. There's the deceptively deep but stomping acid gurgle of "Culdees", the tough industrial rhythms of "Fabian Society" and "Illuminates Of Thaneteros", and most impressively, the heavy, grinding stomp of "Aurum Solis". Like most Moss releases, there are a few non-starters, but overall, this an essential collection for fans of the Chicago artist's distinctive music.

Review: Chicago extraordinaire Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being's third solo album is titled There Is No Acid In This House, and sees him return to Soul Jazz Records. Using his idiosyncratic electronic sound, Moss takes influence from the experimental minds of fellow Windy City innovators such as The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and Sun Ra, through to icons of his hometown's house music scene like Ron Hardy, Marshall Jefferson, Lil Louis and others who have defined Chicago's musical universe over the last half a century.

Review: Soul Jazz are releasing this new album that mixes deep percussive African rhythms and Afro- Jazz with elements of hip-hop and electronica recorded in Los Angeles, California. Produced by West Coast left-field hip-hop/electronic/jazz artist Carlos Nino aka Ammon Contact, the album features Adam Rudolph, Hamid Drake and Brahim Fribgane as well as special guest and deep jazz legend Yusef Lateef. Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake have between them played and recorded with Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Jah Wobble, Don Cherry and many more. With previous releases on Soul Jazz Records (Beautiful) and Scott Heren's (Prefuse 73) Eastern Developments label, Hu Vibrational's deep spiritual music draws on the links between Africa, Jazz music and avant-garde hip-hop. Adam Rudolph co-founded the Mandingo Griot Society and has been working together for over recent years as musical partner to the great Yusef Lateef. He also runs the Go: Organic Orchestra, a 22 piece percussion group. Carlos Nino (aka Ammon Contact) has had releases on Ninja Tune, Soul Jazz Records, Eastern Development and Plug Research. As well as being an integral part of Hu Vibrational he has also produced Dwight Trible and The Life Force Trio, Build An Ark and the Go: Organic Orchestra.

Review: Drummer and composer David Lee Jr.'s acclaimed yet hard to find gem Evolution from 1974 is revered for the way it ingeniously melds the experimental spirit of John Coltrane and Sun Ra with the infectious rhythms of New Orleans. A standout among legendary New Orleans drummers, including Zigaboo Modeliste and Idris Muhammed, Lee Jr. showcased fiery innovation and unparalleled experimentation here on this 'lost classic' deep jazz album, originally released on Lee Jr.'s Supernal Records. It embodies a quest for creative progress and spiritual freedom and is rooted in the vibrant rhythms of New Orleans and Afro-Futurist musical concepts. It remains a rare and monumental achievement in the realm of deep and spiritual jazz, and here has been newly remastered for a limited magenta vinyl edition.

Review: Although not a name with which most listeners will be familiar, the Lijadu Sisters were one of Nigeria's top musical exports in the 1970s. Inspired just as much by American soul as native styles such as afrobeat, highlife and juju, the identical twins delivered four knockout albums of joyful musical fusion throughout the 1970s. This first retrospective from Soul Jazz Records showcases the best material from those albums, mixing up low-slung, chant-heavy percussion workouts (the brilliant "Osupa") and horn-heavy afro-jams ("Sunshine"), with Pointer Sisters-ish groovers ("Life Is Gone Down Low") and frantic dancefloor business ("Come & Dance"). Deluxe packaging as usual from Soul Jazz - essential!
