Love Brings Out The Best In You
My Baby
Review: Fresh early 70s Cali soul, Edward 'Apple' Nelson and his citrus compadres self-released this on their own Sagittarius imprint back in 1971.Highly limited, it never got the justice it deserved... Until now. Thanks to Jazzman we can now enjoy the positive licks and charms of northern soul-fave "Love Brings Out The Best Of You" and get all reflective and romantic with "My Baby" as if they were recorded and released yesterday. Fruity.

Silly Kind Of Love
Review: Another limited edition modern soul rarity via Jazzman's collectable Soul 7 label. A great brass section is ably assisted by Billy Byrd's throaty vocals and that throbbing funk bass. Meanwhile infectious flipside jam ''Silly Kind Of Love'' is the epitome of feel good soul groove. Limited to 500 copies, don't sleep because these won't be around for long!

They'll Never Know Why
Baby I'm Sorry
Review: A bona fide northern soul standard: Soul 7 has paid the ultimate respect to renowned bandleader Chavez with this special repress. The urgent stomper "They'll Never Know Why" utilises the same chords and emphatic delivery as The Temptations "I'll Be There" while "Please Forgive Me" struts with just a tad more melancholy and some heart-warming chorus harmonies. Two incredible finds from Soul 7 here. Plus, having unearthed the original tapes for maximum mastering muscle, the sound quality on this is better than it ever sounded blasted on the system in Wigan Casino.

The Continental Showstoppers - "Not Too Young"
The Valentines - "Breakaway"
Review: Nashville's soul scene has been well documented over the years - names like Ann Sexton, Brief Encounter & Jackie Beavers immediately spring to mind - but here Jazzman/Soul 7 dig a little deeper to unearth a couple of funkier-than-usual Northern Soul anthems. The Continental Showstoppers cover version of Jackey Beaver's penned soul classic has been lovingly restored and the label claim it sounds better than the original! On the flipside The Valentines deliver an irresistible poppy soul dancer with "Breakway" that should have been a hit but wasn't. Proper Wigan Casino fodder!

Gregory Moore
Review: A deserved repress - this time on 7" - for a record that first turned up on Jazzman's Soul Spectrum label four years ago. Repackaged this time as a dinked 45, it's a glorious journey of rare, jazz tinged modern soul that has crossover appeal with the funk and disco heads too. A classic vocal rides over a driving groove, killer rhythm section and that infectious, repetitive brass section with effortless aplomb. Only 500 copies were pressed and we're tipping them to be sold out for good within a week. Don't sleep!

Look Out (I'm Gonna Blow Your Mind) (2:55)
Mother Duck (2:43)
Review: When Jazzman themselves describe a release as 'hopelessly obscure' and 'off the radar to even the most dedicated' you know you've got something special. There's a really raw rusty garage funk to both sides here; both the classic R&B swing, majestic organs and powerful vocals of "Look Out" and the sweaty instrumental frenzy "Mother Duck" instantly enrapture and make you ponder the age-old question... HOW has this gone unnoticed for so long?

What About The Child ((Take 6))
People Will Be People
Review: Two liquid dynamite psychedelic soul stormers taken from late last year's Lost Treasure From 1974 album from California funk band Gold. This single on the fantastic and consistently fine Soul 7/Jazzman vinyl-only imprint has a new version of one of the album's highlights, with "What About The Child" presented here in a slightly different arrangement, although it retains the soul-drenched tight funk arrangement, wonderful backing vocals and sweeping strings. "People Will Be People" is a more mid tempo affair with memorable lyrics and a classy arrangement that will have true soul lovers swooning! Only 500 copies.

Workin' For My Baby
Just Ask Me
Review: Another fine lesson in deep crate curation, Jazzman rediscover the criminally overlooked skills of Virginia troubadour Lenis Guess. Recorded during the late 60s and 70s, many of the cuts on this special triple-7" box set have never been further than the state line. Which is utter madness... Just listen to the lavish, lolloping bass jam on "How You Gonna Do It", the firing JB-style horn drama of "Thank Goodness Gotta Good Woman" and the raw belly-bound blues soul of "Workin' For My Baby" and you'll wonder how he remained an obscurity for so long. Complete with detailed liner notes, this is a must for all funk aficionados.

Without Your Love (2:53)
Giving Up Your Love (1:45)
Review: Straight from 68; Diane Lewis's Wand double-A has passed hands for well over L300 in the past, and it's really not hard to understand why... Northern soul anthem "Without Your Love" comes with gutsy vocals, full spectrum backing vocals and drums so lively and crisp they sound like they're marching out of the speakers. "Giving Up Your Love" plays the consummate soother; a raw soul ballad with strings and delicate harmonies, it's the ultimate antidote to the emotional frenzy on the A. Highly limited.

Movin' On A Groove
Nice & Easy (take 6 previously unreleased)
Review: "I'm a Good Woman" from 1966 is possibly Barbara Lynn's most famous cut and was reissued on Jazzman associate label Fryers back in 2004 as the label's debut 45. On this double sider, another Jazzman offshoot, Soul 7, digs a little deeper with this slab of 7 inch dinked goodness containing "Movin' On A Groove". The A side comes correct with a huge slice of modern soul femme funk with a catchy piano refrain underpinned by a smouldering organ in the background. On the flip, we discover an unreleased version of "Nice & Easy" from 1976, which has been lovingly restored and drenched in a crystal clear vocal performance from Barbara, sounding as though it was recorded yesterday.

By My Side (3:47)
Dancin' Prancin' (4:04)
Review: Pure Pleasure; never has a name been more apt. Two sides of glistening soul and funk Detroit 1980 style. With years on the live circuit throughout the 70s, this was the only 45" they ever cut by boy is it gem; "By My Side" is a powerful piece of soul enriched by warm production, big instrumentation and of course Barbara Love's gutsy, honest vocals. "Dancin' Prancin'" plays a cheeky counterpoint with fun-packed super-tight disco energy that delivers on its title's promise in any party situation. The pleasure is all ours.

Flat Foot Hustlin'
Review: The mighty Jazzman continues its soulful reissue crusade with a fine release on the Soul 7 sub-label with two tracks plucked from the reissued Flat Foot Hustlin' album. "I Like Your Stuff" has jangly guitar and a summery feel good chorus vibe - very nice! On the flipside "Flat Foot Hustlin" has a more aggressive urban soulful funk appeal with jazzy touches aplenty. Nothing short of essential.

1 - "You Can Fly On My Aeroplane" (album edit)
Review: Two seductive sides of pure soul, arriving for the first time on 7" vinyl. Norman Whitfield (here under the guise of the artist Wee) drops two sweet soulful offerings in edited form for the limited edition Soul 45 label. This one's for those of you out there looking for something more refined than what you might find on the average dinked 45.

I Want To Show You
Review: Another Norman Whitfield offering under the artist guise of Wee - this is super rare connoisseur soul for the diggers among you. "I Luv You" is underpinned by a walking funk bass and a hooky piano refrain with lashings of soothing backing vocals. "I Want To Show You" is a slower paced soul gem that shows off Norman's writing and lush production skills. In a word, essential.
