Review: Fresh early 70s Cali soul, Edward 'Apple' Nelson and his citrus compadres self-released this on their own Sagittarius imprint back in 1971.Highly limited, it never got the justice it deserved... Thanks to Jazzman we can now enjoy the positive licks and charms of northern soul-fave "Love Brings Out The Best Of You" and get all reflective and romantic with "My Baby" as if they were recorded and released yesterday. Review: A bona fide northern soul standard: Soul 7 has paid the ultimate respect to renowned bandleader Chavez with this special repress. The urgent stomper "They'll Never Know Why" utilises the same chords and emphatic delivery as The Temptations "I'll Be There" while "Please Forgive Me" struts with just a tad more melancholy and some heart-warming chorus harmonies. Two incredible finds from Soul 7 here. Plus, having unearthed the original tapes for maximum mastering muscle, the sound quality on this is better than it ever sounded blasted on the system in Wigan Casino.

Review: A dusty old classic originally released on the legendary Brunswick, both sides originally saw the dancefloor at the peak of Motown's soul explosion. With such a powerful delivery and distinctive talk-like flow that drags oh-so-coolly behind the beats, you wonder why Tony didn't score so many hits. "Suddenly" is the real power house with a middle eighth that's been sampled in several genres. "It Hurts me More" is more your trad soul with a big chorus and softer sentiment.

Review: Fresh from 1968, this Dionne Warwick-affiliated double-sided one-off by The Gentlemen Four returns in its original glory courtesy of Soul 7 and Jazzman. "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down" is a straight-up northern soul stomper with big drums, powerful momentum and emphatic harmonies. Looking for a more tender moment? Flip for the show-stopped ballad "It Won't Hurt" where the harmonies play an even more pivotal role in the dynamic. Nothing hurts with records like this.

Review: Two liquid dynamite psychedelic soul stormers taken from late last year's Lost Treasure From 1974 album from California funk band Gold. This single on the fantastic and consistently fine Soul 7/Jazzman vinyl-only imprint has a new version of one of the album's highlights, with "What About The Child" presented here in a slightly different arrangement, although it retains the soul-drenched tight funk arrangement, wonderful backing vocals and sweeping strings. "People Will Be People" is a more mid tempo affair with memorable lyrics and a classy arrangement that will have true soul lovers swooning! Only 500 copies.

Review: Another fine lesson in deep crate curation, Jazzman rediscover the criminally overlooked skills of Virginia troubadour Lenis Guess. Recorded during the late 60s and 70s, many of the cuts on this special triple-7" box set have never been further than the state line. Which is utter madness... Just listen to the lavish, lolloping bass jam on "How You Gonna Do It", the firing JB-style horn drama of "Thank Goodness Gotta Good Woman" and the raw belly-bound blues soul of "Workin' For My Baby" and you'll wonder how he remained an obscurity for so long. Review: A stunning soul double A with a percussion heavy smoky soul cover of Leroy Lane & The Upstairs Maids' "There's A Man" and a big-swing, horn-heaved late 60s Motown-style ballad "I Have This World & You". Canadian soul act Joey Irving & Just Us only wrote and recorded a handful of songs and - madly - they couldn't get a deal on home soil so turned to Belgium's Baltic label which was usually the sole preserve of elevator music and native Flemish folk. Review: Straight from 68; Diane Lewis's Wand double-A has passed hands for well over L300 in the past, and it's really not hard to understand why... Northern soul anthem "Without Your Love" comes with gutsy vocals, full spectrum backing vocals and drums so lively and crisp they sound like they're marching out of the speakers. "Giving Up Your Love" plays the consummate soother; a raw soul ballad with strings and delicate harmonies, it's the ultimate antidote to the emotional frenzy on the A. Highly limited.

Review: "I'm a Good Woman" from 1966 is possibly Barbara Lynn's most famous cut and was reissued on Jazzman associate label Fryers back in 2004 as the label's debut 45. On this double sider, another Jazzman offshoot, Soul 7, digs a little deeper with this slab of 7 inch dinked goodness containing "Movin' On A Groove". The A side comes correct with a huge slice of modern soul femme funk with a catchy piano refrain underpinned by a smouldering organ in the background. On the flip, we discover an unreleased version of "Nice & Easy" from 1976, which has been lovingly restored and drenched in a crystal clear vocal performance from Barbara, sounding as though it was recorded yesterday.

Review: Pure Pleasure; never has a name been more apt. Two sides of glistening soul and funk Detroit 1980 style. With years on the live circuit throughout the 70s, this was the only 45" they ever cut by boy is it gem; "By My Side" is a powerful piece of soul enriched by warm production, big instrumentation and of course Barbara Love's gutsy, honest vocals. "Dancin' Prancin'" plays a cheeky counterpoint with fun-packed super-tight disco energy that delivers on its title's promise in any party situation. The pleasure is all ours.

Review: Another Super Soul limited edition rarity, lovingly restored from the original master tapes. Super Soul brother Clarence Reid was not initially associated with the Northern Soul scene, having been better known as the writer of many a funk and disco hit. However "I'm Your Yes Man" flew under the radar and failed to move in any significant numbers when it initially surfaced - making it one of the rarest titles to come out on the Wand label - and as such became a highly prized spin on the Northern Soul scene. 500 copies and that's it.

Review: The mighty Jazzman continues its soulful reissue crusade with a fine release on the Soul 7 sub-label with two tracks plucked from the reissued Flat Foot Hustlin' album. "I Like Your Stuff" has jangly guitar and a summery feel good chorus vibe - very nice! On the flipside "Flat Foot Hustlin" has a more aggressive urban soulful funk appeal with jazzy touches aplenty. Nothing short of essential.

This dinked 45 from Ike Noble and The Uptights is just the start for Jazzman with further sevens plus an albums worth of material planned after a successful trip to Arkansas. If you like your funk rippling with overwhelming vocal emotion you will love the raw and infectious nature of both "That's The Sound Of My Heart" and "That's What I Get". The A Side leans on an uptempo Midwestern funk vibe whilst Ike's tearing vocal turn on the flip is the perfect accompaniment to a pounding backing from the Up Tights.
