Atmospherica Vol 1
Cat: SOMA 446. Rel: 20 Nov 15
  1. Fargo (12:32)
  2. CMOS Therapy (7:08)
  3. Night Song (5:55)
Review: The ever-busy Rod Modell has a new album due on Soma later this month. Ahead of that set - his fourth for Slam's long-running label - he's decided to put out this taster 12". Curiously, though Atmospherica Volume 1 doesn't contain any tracks from that album, instead serving up three new treats. 12-minute A-side "Fargo" is undoubtedly the star attraction, offering a chunkier-than-usual take on his weed-enhanced dub techno grooves, paranoid textures and loopy electronics. "CMOS Therapy" is even more up-tempo in feel, with urgent rhythms, surging motifs and notably fizzing cymbals. Finally, "Night Song" sees Modell trek deep into the jungle for inspiration, returning with a muddy chunk of dub techno humidity.

Atmospherica Vol 2
Cat: SOMA 452. Rel: 01 Jan 90
  1. Exploring The North (12:59)
  2. Pinewood Lodge (9:05)
  3. Shot Point (3:04)
Review: Few producers do the dub techno sound better than Rod Modell and on this second Atmospherica instalment, he shows why he is so revered. "Exploring The North" is dense and subdued, the hisses and crackles ebbing and flowing fluidly over a powerful sub-bass. "Pinewood Lodge" is more atmospheric and floaty, its chords flitting about like fireflies over a camp fire on the first night of autumn. Rounding out the release is "Shot Point". Immersive, hypnotic and ghostly, it washes through the speakers like waves crashing on a deserted beach at midnight. This is electronic music that is designed to get lost in.

Louder Than Chaos Vol 1
Cat: SOMA 615. Rel: 24 Sep 21
  1. Slam & 999999999 - "Conveyer" (6:08)
  2. Slam & Hector Oaks - "Pathfinder" (5:17)
  3. Slam & Optic Nerve - "Machine Conflict" (6:56)
Review: Soma go super tough on this banging new EP which finds label bosses Slam link up with three different hard techno producers. First up is 999999999 with whom they cook up the visceral 'Conveyer,' a driving and linear banger with frosted synth work. It is Berlin favourite Hector Oaks who is next up with the thumping great drums of 'Pathfinder.' Bright, trance-like synths light up the airwave above the unrelenting drums and then Optic Nerve step up with Slam for 'Machine Conflict,' a track that rocks back and forth on prying leads, with coarse hits and static electricity making for the most intense of grooves.

Louder Than Chaos Vol 4
Cat: SOMA 621. Rel: 14 Jan 22
  1. Uncontrolled (6:07)
  2. Clarity (6:49)
  3. Construct (6:57)
Review: Having launched their collaborative heavy techno series Louder Than Chaos via hook-ups with Perc, Rebekah, Hector Oaks, Optic Nerve and Italian twosome 999999999, Soma overlords Slam return with their biggest joint outing yet: a three-tracker made in cahoots with rave-igniting Belgian techno star Amelie Lens. In keeping with her dark, murky and percussively intense style, opener 'Uncontrolled' sees the trio wrap razor-sharp synth sounds and whispers of calming chords around a groove that sits somewhere between tribal techno and hard techno. 'Clarity' boasts similarly sweaty drums and more foreboding electronic riffs - spooky and excitement-building in equal measure - while 'Construct' is nasty, intense and deliciously wicked.
