The Night Of Power (reissue)
The Night Of Power (reissue) (LP + booklet in spot-varnished sleeve)
Cat: 27 SC. Rel: 18 May 23

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
The Night Of Power (part 1)
The Night Of Power/Reflections From The Grave (part 2)
Review: Abdur Razzaq and Rafiyq are the pseudonyms of Dennis Matthews and Calvin Vivian, two musicians and poets from New York City who were active in the 1970s and 80s. 'The Night of Power (Laylatu'l Qadri)' is their only album from 1981, and has gone down in time as a rare and bewitching gem of spiritual jazz, electronica and spoken word, inspired by far-ranging themes of racism, transcendentalism and Islam/Sufism. A Fender Rhodes, Minimoog, and Roland CR-78 all went into its making, backing up a capacious 38-minute spiritual meditation, guided by the spoken word of Vivian (credited on the record as Rafiyq). Resurrected and remastered from the original reels by exquisites label Seance Centre, this is a twinkly, quietly beautiful warning against the path humanity has taken thus far and a spiritual recalibration for those who're willing to accept it.

Review: The latest release on Canada's Seance Centre label focuses on the work of long-serving Dutch experimentalist Michel Banabila, gathering together examples of his "excursions into otherworldly and imagined realms". The first record boasts tracks recorded between 1987 and 2017, shuffling between humid, percussion-led workouts, exotic ambience, dark and creepy soundscapes and sticky electronic/acoustic fusion. The second record (clips of which are not featured here) replicates the track list of the Rotterdam artist's 1983 album Marill, a sought-after, LSD-inspired trip into Brian Eno and David Byrne territory that remains one of the most thrillingly odd (but pleasingly beautiful) ambient albums of the period. In other words, it's an absolutely essential package.

Review: Third time around for Beverly Glenn-Copeland's superb 1986 LP Keyboard Fantasies, which Invisible City Editions reissued last year. Since copies of that pressing are hard to come back, this fresh reissue should be welcomed. Musically, it's something of a killer curio: a set that sees Copeland adding weary, folksy vocals to melodious, synthesizer-based backing tracks. Stylistically it's a little more diverse than that, sitting somewhere between art-rock, lo-fi synth-soul, '80s synth-wave and new age ambience. The looseness of the instrumentation and production is particularly alluring, as is the "home-made" feel of Glenn-Copeland's heart-aching songs.

Review: It's a bold, bold statement to claim that a record was "recorded across decades". We all know genius can take time, and geniuses can be easy to distract, but there's slow and then there's starting a project in one aeon and ending it in another. In truth, Jon Iverson Meets Prins Emanuel, Golden Ivy, Inre Kretsen Grupp is that, and then not that. A collaborative project that sees some incredible minds meeting in the middle while never actually meeting. Starting with Iverson's original 1980 American home studio recordings, Seance Centre's Brandon Hocura took unfinished sonic sketches from the master musician and set to inviting 21st Century practitioners to complete the work. Looking to Malmo, Emanuel Sundin (Prins Emanuel), Ivar Lantz (Golden Ivy) and Martin Blomberg (Inre Kretsen Grupp) were drafted for that duty, and the result is this slow burn album somewhere between atmospheric badlands and kosmische.

Review: Canadian label Seance Center (run by former Invisible City Editions co-founder Brandon Hocura) presents an album by acupressure expert and electronic composer Sam McClellan. Music of the Five Elements is 'a work of perfectly tuned healing music', by way of minimalism, American primitive guitar and psychedelia. On the album, McClellan provides voice, synthesizer, guitar, bowed bass, piano, effects and Chinese flute: all played by himself. Of the album, McClellan himself stated that the optimum effect of the album is achieved if each side of the recording is played through in its entirety, without interruption. Moreover, it should be used as a meditational or body work tool, rather than entertainment, and will increase in effect over time. However, overplaying or improper use may eventually diminish its designed effect. Re-mixed and mastered from the original master reels.

Review: Ontario, Canada based Seance Centre returns with a collection of songs by Californian voice artist and poet MJ Lallo. The works on this double LP compilation were all recorded in her home studio between 1982 and 1997, where she used digital processing techniques to create harmonising mantras layered with drum machine rhythms. Although Lallo's flight path is distinctly her own, her journey converges with other travellers as diverse as Jon Hassell, Laraaji, Stereolab, William Aura, Laurie Anderson, Meredith Monk, Gertrude Stein and even Terry Gilliam - whose film Brazil was a big influence on her.

Star Child Going Home (4:45)
Aquarius Blue (4:48)
Deep Dreams (11:04)
Review: It would be fair to say that MJ Lallo has enjoyed an eclectic career, juggling composing music for the likes of NASA and the Vatican Observatory with professional voiceover artist. Last year, Full Spectrum Records reissued her superb, self-funded, cassette-only 1988 debut album, The Channeled Voice and now Brandon Hocura's Seance Centre is preparing to put out a double-album of archive, unreleased material. This taster 12" is little less than superb, bouncing between the Herbie Hancock style, synthesizer-heavy jazz-funk of "Star Child Going Home" and the gentle downtempo bliss of the breezy "Aquarius Blue". Best of all, though, is the ethereal, new age influenced B-side "Deep Dreams", a synthesizer-and-voice composition aptly described by Hocura as an "an entrancing meditation".

Daylight Savings (4:56)
Review: Seance Centre have put together this beautiful new limited edition package on hand-stamped 12" and it is a meditative escape of the highest order. 'Rust' opens up with shimmering pads and half-heard voices, scattered drum sounds and immersive ambient that is like waking up from a dream. 'Ah Bah Dee' then builds around an evolving synth melody with twinkling keys up top and 'Winterhaze' brings a warmer, more hopeful vibe with its whimsical flutes and gentle rhythm. Closing out the EP is 'Daylight Savings' with organic piano chords falling heavy on the heart.

Review: Four years after their last physical full-length outing, You'll Never Get To Heaven return with a brand-new album. Members Alice Hanson and Chuck Blazevic have wisely chosen not to dramatically alter their winning formula all to much, with blends soft-touch vocals with dreamy, effects-laden ambience, Stereolab style kraut-pop, lo-fi pop, minimalistic arrangements and tons of space echo and delay. It's a hugely alluring, fragile and gently mind-altering sound all told and one that stands up to repeat listens. It was apparently made at home during a particularly wintery period, and you can tell - it's as bright and picturesque as freshly settled snow and as invigorating as a fireside cuddle after a chilly winter walk.
