Review: The Bayara Citizens dropped the original 'Ju/Ru Music' 7" on Joe Clausell's Sacred Rhythm label back in 2006. It has become a rather pricey little 45 prm that now gets reissued as two different, dubbed out Afro rhythms with swirling guitar licks. The Afrikan Art opener on the a-side is full of sunshine and Latin vibes thanks to the superbly plucked strings and shuffling groves, while the flip is the Afrikan dub Drum Drums version - darker, more percussive more moody. Both sides bring something different to any dub set.

Each new weekly seemingly brings more of his spiritually intense reworks and this time out he is doing his thang to two tracks by The Bayaya Citizens. His take on 'The Mofocongoietric' is arresting thanks to its taught synths and off-grid keys all colouring in a prickly, percussive groove. 'Ban Ban Eya' (Joaquin Joe Claussell Cosmic Arts dubness) is just as intense and busy with those rapturous synths extending up the heavens and last of all original tune 'The Healers' brings some afro grooves to the EP.

On the flip he is slightly more stripped back, with cosmic overtones next to the tribal dub sounds of his 'Ban Ban Eya' rework.

"Aye Ye" is the dancefloor-focussed spell, all urgent and heavily layered with loopy insistency, powerful harmonies and roaring horns. Review: Joe Claussell's Sacred Rhythm Music is back to present new music under his alias The Bayara Citizens. Elektrik Afrika is his second full length of the project, where he pursues yet more of his idiosyncratic style of 'spiritual life music'. By fusing acoustic and electronic together as one, the project represents evolution - producing its own genetics and speaking an individual dialect of rhythm and sound. Traces can be heard in "Zainabu" (Spirit Dancer) which fuses electronic harmonizing on the skins of traditional folkloric rhythms, or the soul power of "Mofo Congoietric" (Joaquin's Sacred Rhythm version), through to the tunnelling and hypnotic power of "Bambara" (The Tribes Of Distortion dub) and the truly life-affirming "Diamonds" (It's Time To Let Our People Go).

Review: Straight from Joe Claussell and crew, Bolla's 'Afrikan Basement' is a release from Sacred Rhythms Soil series; fitting, as this feverishly stripped-down exercise in rhythm assassination couldn't be more suited for the job. Dope afro-latin percussion meets funky wah-wah guitar loops and builds along with an almost psychotic singular note that hums sinisterly throughout, inching a little higher until the record eventually peaks to its crescendo and explodes into a massive wall of stripped-down drums that will have any party's collective ass shaking. While it does capture the essence of the afro-cosmic aesthetic, it nevertheless maintains a steady dose of funk throughout.

Originally released with remixes from Quentin Harris and Kenny Dope, then later Blaze, it takes a bold producer to add to its heritage. Review: Three years on from the release of the second installment of the Residue series, Joe Clausell has decided to bring it back. While the three tracks included are credited to two different artists, there's no doubt that it's Clausell at the controls. By his standard, all three cuts are pretty bold, wild and in your face, beginning with the retro-futurist, gospel house meets organ-heavy deep house of Teenage Music's superb "Looking For Bargain". Forest Electrik's "Freedum" [sic] is a surprisingly electronic, tech-tinged affair, and sees Clausell wrapping his usual African-influenced house grooves in springy bass, swirling electronics and intense synth solos. Those mental electronics come to the fore on "Circuitry Haywire", which sounds like someone having an epileptic fit while leaning on a synthesizer keyboard.

Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell's latest full-length excursion is, in typical style, a little different from your average artistic full-length. Instead of showcasing the spiritual house maestro's completed productions, it instead offers glimpses of familiar favourites, B-sides and deep album cuts in various stages of completion. That may not sound appealing on paper, but it genuinely is. For starters, Clausell is a fine musician, and many of the showcased "manifestations" are effectively early, stripped-back takes laden with a mixture of fluid and jazzy piano solos, soulful vocals, spacey synthesizer chords and acoustic guitars. Some cuts are inspired ambient soundscapes, while others are breezier, lighter dancefloor numbers underpinned by a variety of African and Latin inspired deep house rhythms.

The super limited Manifestations: Long Versions EP 2 collects another three such tunes on one coloured vinyl. First is a dreamy and sun kissed tune from Mental Remedy that is all breathy vocals and noodling solos, then The Bayara Citizens offer a high speed salsa dance that transports you to the south of the Med and beyond. Another one from Mental Remedy cloys out with more afro rhythms and organic, wooden percussive sounds.

Review: On this surprise 7" edition of Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell's unofficial Edits & Overdubs series of releases, the long-serving New York producer turns his attention to Exuma's 'The Obeah Man', a heavily percussive, Afro-fired slab of rhythm and blues/folk-rock fusion that was once an anthem at David Mancuso's Loft parties. Claussell's 'Part One' rework somehow seems even more urgent, percussive and life-affirming than Exuma's original version, and the 'Part 2' version - an unashamedly sweaty, drum-heavy interpretation - most certainly is. Possibly best of all - for plays in house sets, at least - is the 'Obeah Man Rhythm' version, which is a loopy, percussive beast. You may need to go for a little lie down after playing it - we did!

Review: Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs Special Extended Versions series rolls on with a fourth of six parts. It's proven a real gold mine so far, with endless amounts of gospel tinged house and super spiritual grooves getting all who hear it to a high state of consciousness. There are plenty of jazzy overtones to the opener here, 'Come Sunday', which is laden with afro percussion and big horns. It's a steel drum affair on Pheeroan Aklaff 's 'L' that is brilliantly tropical, then there's trident funk from The Kay-gees and a lush bit of fusion from the ever excellent Leroy Hutson.

Review: Joaquin "Joe" Clausell launched the "Xperiments" series back in 2016 with a box set containing two single-sided flexi-discs and a seven-inch single, all of which contained some pretty spaced-out sounds. Four years on he's decided to offer-up a new instalment in the avant-garde project: a single-sided seven-inch presented in a special hand-made sleeve by artist Akemi Shimada. Interestingly, the featured track, "Discombobulated Wing", is far more club-ready than its predecessors, with Clausell layering krautrock-esque treated guitars and Tangerine Dream style analogue synthesizer parts atop a low-slung, restless bass guitar line and sparse house drums.

Review: Two years ago, Joaquin "Joe" Clausell donned his occasional Mental Remedy alias and offered up "A Journey To Noi", a decidedly spiritual album that mixed Japanese instrumentation with his usual ambient and deep house sounds. On this 12", Clausell offers up some heady new interpretations that - like much of his work over the last decade - are built around the percussive power of African rhythms. The opening "Sacred Rhythm Version" of "It All Began In The East" is particularly potent, with Clausell cloaking a warm, organic and percussive Afro-house beat in distinctive Japanese Koto melodies and jazzy piano flourishes. We'd also recommend the formidably heavy, drum-laden rework of "Dance For Gratitude", whose Latin American bassline and simmering synth-strings are almost as addictive as the weighty groove they sit upon.

Review: The third part of Joe Claussell's Joaquin Unofficial Edits & Overdubs series is as strong as the first two with four Special Extended Versions making for some joyous listening. "Tears Of Joy" is rapturous house music with gospel overtones that canto fail to bring the soul. "Al's Razerblade" is a lo-fi funk mash up with a strident rhythm section and "Morning" is golden soul with soaring strings that brings some 60s magic to the dance floor. "Life On Earth" is the steamiest of the lot, with tropical sounds and mad jazzy chords all laced with wild percussion that bristles with energy.

Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's latest round of spiritual and percussive dancefloor workouts were apparently "randomly selected" from the vaults of DJ tools and work-in-progress tracks tucked away under the floorboards at Sacred Rhythm HQ. Naturally there's nothing genuinely "half-finished" here, just a quartet of cuts worthy of your attention. He begins with "Elegua", a West African style workout that boasts call-and-response group vocals and a loose, languid tribal rhythm track, before moving towards heavy Afro-house territory via the deep, dark analogue bass, machine beats and densely layered percussion of "Makussa PT Three". Over on side B, "Di Mayo" layers sharp, spacey synths and lashings of special effects to a dubbed-out Afro-house rhythm, while the gloriously colourful "Afrofunkjazz" lives up to its title.

Happily, Clausell has decided to reissue the track, offering up two scaled-down versions that fit on one tidy seven-inch single. On the A-side you'll find the "Special 7" Edit", a six minute blast of ultra-positive dancefloor bliss that's about the most positive thing we've heard in ages. Turn to the flip for a previously unreleased instrumental take that strips the track back further, allowing the gorgeous piano solos and busy bass guitar more room to breathe.

As with 2014's inaugural collection, once again we're treated to the full spiritual spectrum from his epic take on Barbara Mason & Bunny Sigler's already beautiful "Locked In This Position" to a cathedral level take on The Fifth Dimension's "Aquarius", this really is a special (not to mention highly limited) 12".

Review: Like many DJs with production nous, Joaquin "Joe" Clausell has always made re-edits and remixes to play in his sets. From time to time, he releases these on CD under the Unofficial Edits, Overdubs & Unreleased Remixes header. This fourth volume in the occasional series boasts plenty of gems reflective of the producer's influences and inspirations. So, while "Life Another" sees him deliver an extra-seductive version of a D'Angelo modern soul gem, the track that follows, "Fuego" is a superb Afro-house interpretation of a forgotten Osibida cut. Elsewhere, you'll find a thrusting, peak-time revision of Giorgio Moroder, a thrillingly spacey chunk of dub disco, and a couple of rock solid disco-era soul revisions.

Intentionally crafted as a piece that bridges the needs of both the music and dance communities to whom Claussell is mutually close, this is a suite divided into multiple sections that feed on one another; they appose elements of samba, jazz and house, with ambient interstices and even ruminative piano meltdowns ('Healer', 'Heloise'). This ultra limited yellow LP edition is the audiophile's preference, its dynamism best flaunted on the floaty but driving 'Cosmic Arts' mix.

Review: Joaquin "Joe" Clausell has been using the Bolla alias to deliver authentic blends of indigenous African music and winding deep house since 2005, though it was only earlier this year that he released the project's debut album. This 12" boasts extended, club-friendly versions of tracks from that full-length, the impressive Makussa. There's much to enjoy, from the toughened-up Afro-disco revivalism of "Disco Afri Co Co (Extended Version)", and intense, deep space drum workout "A Means of Communication (Freaky Dub)", to the trumpet-laden Afro-house niceness of "Wandolo Feat Bonga (Freaky Dub Extended)". Review: Last year, Joe Clausell delivered the first album from the Afro-centric Bolla project he begun way back in 2005, following it up with an essential 12" of extended, dancefloor-friendly revisions. Here, he delivers a follow-up EP along similar lines. There's naturally much to admire, starting with Clausell's own "Personal Boiler Room version" of the jaunty, saxophone-laden "Makusa". He takes a trip to the farthest reaches of the galaxy on "Basement Seance", whose sparse African rhythms and delay-laden vocals work magnificently with the track's decidedly spaced-out synths. "Downward Staircase" is a breezier, jazz-flecked Afro-house jam blessed with luscious Latin piano solos, while the Sacred Rhythm version of "Sangre" is a highly charged, uptempo romp through percussion-heavy, Afrobeat-influenced territory.

Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's Manifestation project started life as a CD featuring early and work-in-progress versions of some of the New York based DJ/producer's most inspiring and intriguing tracks. Since then, he's delivered a couple of coloured vinyl EPs featuring extended takes on these tracks. There's much to enjoy on this third (and likely final) chapter in the series. First up is a near 12-minute version of Mental Remedy's spiritual house gem 'Noi', where expansive, improvised piano solos twinkle away atop a lo-fi drum machine rhythm and starry synthesizer chords. It's followed by the kalimba and Marimba-heavy delights of The Bayara Citizens' blissful 'Kulimba', while side two boasts the weighty, dense, sweaty and insanely percussive 'Under The Influence' mix of Residue's 'Eno'.

Review: While it initially started as a compilation and DJ mix series, Joe Claussell's gospel-focused Praise project has now spawned a string of EPs featuring rare tracks and new 'edits and overdubs' reworks by the Sacred Rhythm founder. The latest instalment begins with a wickedly percussive, predictably righteous live recording of a gospel slammer by Bishop Jeff Banks and the Revival Temple Mass Choir, which Claussell then turns into a 14-minute epic. He builds from a sparse, twinkling, piano-heavy start, before introducing weighty house drums and wild organ solos as the track progresses. Over on the flip it's all about 'God Helps Those Who Help Themselves', a turn-of-the-80s gospel disco slammer which Claussell successfully extends (the 'Edits and Overdubs Main' mix) and then dubs out (the accompanying instrumental).

Review: There is something of an irony to the name Joaquin Joe Claussell has given this new Manifestations series on his own Sacred Rhythm label. Why? Well he is a master of long form remixes, tunes that go on for ten-minutes plus and take you on involving trips that at least seem never-ending. Anyway, Long Versions EP 1 it is, and a fine one it is too. There are jubilant carnival house sounds packed with percussion from Mental Remedy, Kalimba showcases that take you deep into a tropical jungle from The Bayara Citizens and more airy, heady deep house from Alejate and afro-drumming excellence on a second tune from The Bayara Citizens.

For this one, Claussel is joined by Mental Remedy and "I Pray No More", a guitar-led, mid-tempo house chugger, followed by the deeper than deep "Wail Of The Heart" by Unchained Rhythms. Review: It's the big, bad Joe Claussell, and the master reigns in the new year with this absolute stunner of an EP for the Sacred Rhythm label. This is Claussell at his most daring, however, and while you might be expecting some phat-ass house beats and groovy tribalism, the man goes far left of the field on here. The opening "Dungeon Maggots" is a translucent blend of crystal synths and subtle dub echoing, while "Matter Of Factness" injects a delicate house flow into the mix, propelled into motion by a dubby guitar riff. "Affect", "Nuances", and "Seciov" all act as beatless electronic tools, a trio of synth sways to add extra effect to your DJ mix. Yes, Joe!

Review: Having already treated us to a plump revision of the Fania catalogue this year in the shape of the Africa Caribe compilation, Sacred Rhythm present this addendum 12" which sees lynchpin Joe Claussell tackle a veritable classic in the form of "Siembra" from Willie Colon and Ruben Blades. From the artwork down to the heavyweight vinyl pressing, this is a classy looking and feeling twelve inch, and naturally that class is matched sonically. Claussell provides no less than three variants on the track, with a typically rich sounding Sacred Rhythm version hogging the A Side for all of ten minutes. Our favourite is the slightly longer Alternate Instrumental version that's tucked away on the B Side however!

Review: New Yorker Steve Sandberg is Elastic Plastic Generation, known for his upbeat and good vibes beats with a multitude of varied cultural influence. UU UU UU showcases just that, a bouncing twelve on US label Sacred Rhythm that boasts electric keys, manipulated vocals and a healthy 130 bpm bump. Jephte Guillaume's "Vocal Mix" is smoother than the original in its pitch, the added orchestral strings and brass adding depth. Tek Kale takes the other adaptation by storm, erasing the vocals and concentrating solely on the musical platform. Its ferocious beat against the delicacy of the percussion, strings and brass minus the vocal distraction make this Juno's pick of the bunch.

Review: Dope new vinyl 7" featuring exclusive mixes of this beautiful psychedelic house tour de force 'Gentle Rain' with Acid Rain mixes. Experimenting with the uncomfortable mixture of dance-friendly production and the sternly serious project of psychedelic adventurism, Sacred Rhythm has remixed and released this record by H Garden featuring Joi. These mixes are undoubtedly in a more exploratory tone. Luscious chords set the framework for this piano led masterpiece, all the while drifting along on perfectly placed synth arrangements. 'Gentle Rain' might appear pretty at first; a closer listen will yield more confusing emotional reaction as the record at once soothes and disorients. Of course, anyone experienced in introspective exploration and healing should know nourishment and pain are not mutually exclusive.

"African Drug" is, undoubtedly, the most famous of these. Originally released as a single in 1994, the intensely melodious, Steve Reich-esque work has been remixed numerous times over the years. This latest edition arrives on Joaquin "Joe" Clausell's Sacred Rhythm label, with profits going to charities that work to save Africa's endangered Rhino. The A-side contains a freshly mixed and re-mastered version of Holroyd's brilliant original - which brilliantly increases in intensity with the addition of tribal drums two thirds of the way through - with a more percussive, pleasingly hallucinogenic Clausell remix on the flip. In a word: essential.

Review: Joaquin Joe Claussell's magnificent Sacred Rhythm label doesn't deal in standard sounds, only standout sounds. This time out the label offers up a single from Angela Johnson with some heft remixes. The original is as vital and alive as you could imagine, with dancing beats, expressive person and a world of strings and horns that overflow with soul while the vocal soars up top. The Soul Feats's Cosmic Arts Afro dub is just that - arty, starry eyed and dubbed out, while the Love Thyself version is a more elastic soulful house joint of the sort Louie Vega will love.

Review: Joe Claussel has never been one to stand still. Even so, this must arguably be his most ambitious artistic project yet. Trembling Sensing Space started life as an art installation in Amsterdam, where Lidy Six and Katinka Marac's visuals came together with seven tracks composed by Claussel as a unique 'experience'. This CD/DVD package offers an in-depth retrospective, offering Claussel's colour-themed compositions - mostly beatless but occasionally blessed with a pulse, all presented in 5:1 surround sound - alongside a 40-page booklet explaining the creative process. The included DVD delves deeper, offering footage of the installation in action alongside 'making of' featurettes and such.

Review: Joe Claussell's burgeoning Lower East Side Pipes project has given rise to a small grip of records dealing in live, vibrant house tracks that draw on guitar and other such elements to create a very singular sound. Here he revisits some of these jams under his own name to bring an alternative perspective on his creations, kicking off with a "Thermometric Dub" of "90 Degrees Below Zero". The tempo may be frantic, but the atmosphere on the track is actually more of a searching one, not least through the expressive guitar work that sits atop the thrumming house beat. "I Dub Thee Gipsy" is a slower affair where the beats break open a little and the synths in the background twirl politely around the guitar until a heads down dub-out takes hold. With the disco backbone of "Disorganized Corruption", there's ample room for the guitar to freak out in a blissful, groove-fuelled jam.

Review: "Mi Congo te llama" is sheer sultry house, music for smooth talking gentleman to accompany sleek women around a chandelier lit dancefloor, while on stage the Afro-Caribbean band knock out tremendously soulful and touching jams. The trumpet blares through this track with a tremendous force and energy, implanting its wailing and forlorn brass notes deep inside your mind. The men on stage clap roughly in time with the rhythm as the crowd is worked into an ever growing frenzy of swirling silk gowns and sharp dance moves. The dub mix on the flip dampens the intensity slightly, but what it lacks in impact it makes up for in emotion. The band works its trumpet player hard, muting those crisp brass notes and implanting them deeper into the mix, allowing the rest of the music room to breathe. It's testament to the quality of these edits that, on one side, you'll be spinning flamboyantly around a crowded dancehall, and on the other you'll be gently stroking your lovers hair as you take in a velvet night under the stars.

Review: On paper, combining Coltrane jazz classic 'A Love Supreme' and Bob Marley's 'Exodus' in a Cuban jazz style seems like an odd idea, but as Joe Clausell and pianist Matt Jenson proved on their 2013 album as Rebel Tumbao, it's actually a genius one. For proof, check out the original mix, which is tucked away on the flipside of this belated remix EP. The real star attraction though is Ron Trent's A-side remix, which brilliantly re-images the track as a skanking chunk of slow-motion dub house complete with echoing vocal snippets, reverb-laden pianos and plenty of Latin and African style hand percussion. Eqwel's accompanying 'Dub Bass Mix', a more glitchy, electronic affair, is also well worth a listen.

Review: More from Joaquin "Joe" Claussell's ongoing "special" overdubs and edits series, in which he offers up tastily tooled-up and subtly reworked gems from his personal stash of reworks. On side A you'll find his fine version of The Singing Fools' "Love Is A Beautiful Thing", a mid-tempo turn-of-the-80s Canadian disco jam that chugs, rises and falls all in the right place. Over on side B he delivers a stomping, house-style fusion of two killer cuts from the El Coco catalogue: "Afrodesia" and "Coco Kane". Claussell has some fun dubbing out key passages - the familiar string section in particular - over a sweaty beat. As far as we can tell there's no vocal, but that's no bad thing.

Review: You can always be sure of a hugely affecting trip when you tune into something from Sacred Rhythms. And so it proves with this new one from Slam Mode. These are four hugely involving and atmospheric tracks steeped in ambiance. 'Ogman' is humid, dusty and spiritual with its late-night bass subtleties and sustained chords. 'Mientra Duermes' (Reimagined) has a celestial melodic feel over ramshackle house drums and 'Monopole' gets heavy on cancerous and dubbed-out drums with more cosmic chord work serve ing to expand your mind. 'Modus Operandi' is a lush and jazzy deep jungle workout to close.
