Review: Sacred Rhythms invites us back into the deep and mystical world of Roi Azulay who returns to the label for a third outing here. This outing finds him serving up a real focus on his more acoustic leaning sounds. This multi-dimensional producer shows he is adept at laying down tribal drum sounds overlaid with enchanting percussive lines, dancing strings, hypnotic leads and vocal chants that add to the ancient allure of these most hypnotic sounds. Add in a Kuniyuki remix and you have a truly mesmerising new package.

Ju Ru Music (Afrikan dub Drum Drums) (5:03)
Review: The Bayara Citizens dropped the original 'Ju/Ru Music' 7" on Joe Clausell's Sacred Rhythm label back in 2006. It has become a rather pricey little 45 prm that now gets reissued as two different, dubbed out Afro rhythms with swirling guitar licks. The Afrikan Art opener on the a-side is full of sunshine and Latin vibes thanks to the superbly plucked strings and shuffling groves, while the flip is the Afrikan dub Drum Drums version - darker, more percussive more moody. Both sides bring something different to any dub set.

Review: Sacred Rhythm head honcho Joe Claussell must be one of the most relentless artists out there. Each new weekly seemingly brings more of his spiritually intense reworks and this time out he is doing his thang to two tracks by The Bayaya Citizens. His take on 'The Mofocongoietric' is arresting thanks to its taught synths and off-grid keys all colouring in a prickly, percussive groove. 'Ban Ban Eya' (Joaquin Joe Claussell Cosmic Arts dubness) is just as intense and busy with those rapturous synths extending up the heavens and last of all original tune 'The Healers' brings some afro grooves to the EP.

Review: Joaquin Joe Claussell never misses when he serves up his streamy, drawn out and spiritual remixes. Now back on his own Sacred Rhythms label he goes mega long on his 13 minute rework of 'The Mofocongoietric.' Rich with percussion, skyward synths and steamy grooves, it's a fulsome cut that is utterly enthralling. On the flip he is slightly more stripped back, with cosmic overtones next to the tribal dub sounds of his 'Ban Ban Eya' rework.

Get Down (7:18)
Carpet Ride (6:41)
Review: American dance music legend, spiritual explorer and soul encyclopaedia Joe Claussel also of course runs the Sacred Rhythm label, where he serves up an endless amount of vinyl gold. This Special Edits series does exactly what says on the tin and the seventh installment is another one that takes you to a steamy Brooklyn dance floor sometime in the past. Fusion jazz and soulful disco styles define each of these tunes, neither of which are very well known, but both of which will bang, particularly the funky bass and icy hi-hats of 'Get Down' that are combined perfectly with Philly style strings and golden chords.

Afrikan Basement (version)
Review:  Straight from Joe Claussell and crew, Bolla's 'Afrikan Basement' is a release from Sacred Rhythms Soil series; fitting, as this feverishly stripped-down exercise in rhythm assassination couldn't be more suited for the job. Dope afro-latin percussion meets funky wah-wah guitar loops and builds along with an almost psychotic singular note that hums sinisterly throughout, inching a little higher until the record eventually peaks to its crescendo and explodes into a massive wall of stripped-down drums that will have any party's collective ass shaking. While it does capture the essence of the afro-cosmic aesthetic, it nevertheless maintains a steady dose of funk throughout.

Disco Afri Co Co (long version) (6:36)
Review: Joe Clausell began this project in 2005 and still it keeps giving. An evocative fusion of afrofunk and disco inspiration, most of us assumed his decade's work had culminated last year with the album Makussa. We were wrong; this year he's delivered a series of heavily requested extensions, this beautiful slice of string-surged disco being the most recent. The extra two minutes are exactly what the DJ needs for a much roomier groove that allows the salubrious elements to really strut; the shimmering guitar, the strident strings, the insatiable afro-infused drums. Just when we thought the original couldn't be topped... We were wrong. Again!

Review: Tribal, physical, psychedelic: Joe Claussell's Bolla project is one of his finest creative accomplishments for many fans, and his album Afrikan Basement: Makussa is the gift that keeps on giving. Having previously leaked limited 12"s, Joe's label Sacred Rhythm does it again with another super-limited, one-sided press. Hooky, insistent and far-out for the full 10 minutes, this is shaman material right here. Do not sleep.

Simple Things (Joaquin Drum dub version)
Review: A Latin-licked soulful house groove laced with Balearic guitars and Roland at his most falsetto, this first came our way in 2006. Originally released with remixes from Quentin Harris and Kenny Dope, then later Blaze, it takes a bold producer to add to its heritage. Cue: Sacred Rhythm label boss Joe Claussell under his Joaquin guise. The Sacred Rhythm pays respect to the samba spirit while adding hypnotising, organic piano flows. Meanwhile his Drum Dub adds massive Puerto Rican horn-drenched carnival vibes. Both versions are faultless.

Review: Another new week means another selection from Joe Claussell's impossibly steamy and intense reworks. The super limited Manifestations: Long Versions EP 2 collects another three such tunes on one coloured vinyl. First is a dreamy and sun kissed tune from Mental Remedy that is all breathy vocals and noodling solos, then The Bayara Citizens offer a high speed salsa dance that transports you to the south of the Med and beyond. Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell's latest full-length excursion is, in typical style, a little different from your average artistic full-length. Instead of showcasing the spiritual house maestro's completed productions, it instead offers glimpses of familiar favourites, B-sides and deep album cuts in various stages of completion. That may not sound appealing on paper, but it genuinely is. For starters, Clausell is a fine musician, and many of the showcased "manifestations" are effectively early, stripped-back takes laden with a mixture of fluid and jazzy piano solos, soulful vocals, spacey synthesizer chords and acoustic guitars. Some cuts are inspired ambient soundscapes, while others are breezier, lighter dancefloor numbers underpinned by a variety of African and Latin inspired deep house rhythms.

Review: Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs Special Extended Versions series rolls on with a fourth of six parts. It's proven a real gold mine so far, with endless amounts of gospel tinged house and super spiritual grooves getting all who hear it to a high state of consciousness. There are plenty of jazzy overtones to the opener here, 'Come Sunday', which is laden with afro percussion and big horns. Review: Every time that we get a drop of some new Joaquin Joe Claussel material our ears are automatically attracted in that very same direction. In fact, we've been known to get into trouble for playing his material extensively on our Juno HQ system, because we just hate to see it leave. However, this new material is probably not what you're expecting; rather than a new house EP, Mr Claussel has prepared a nerd's guide to sound testing, described by himself as: "DJ tool for testing, measurement, and calibration of mediocre reproducing stereo sound systems". The elements inside the box are flex-discos, not vinyl, and they are a series of sound, spoken word lyrics, and general FX tricks to either test your system out on, or simply sample and twist-up however you please. It's a collectors piece, and something refreshingly different to support the development of good music in clubs. We love you Joe...

Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's latest round of spiritual and percussive dancefloor workouts were apparently "randomly selected" from the vaults of DJ tools and work-in-progress tracks tucked away under the floorboards at Sacred Rhythm HQ. Naturally there's nothing genuinely "half-finished" here, just a quartet of cuts worthy of your attention. He begins with "Elegua", a West African style workout that boasts call-and-response group vocals and a loose, languid tribal rhythm track, before moving towards heavy Afro-house territory via the deep, dark analogue bass, machine beats and densely layered percussion of "Makussa PT Three". Over on side B, "Di Mayo" layers sharp, spacey synths and lashings of special effects to a dubbed-out Afro-house rhythm, while the gloriously colourful "Afrofunkjazz" lives up to its title.

Review: First released in digital and CD formats via Sacred Rhythm, 'Progessive Roots Evolution: A Song For Healing' hears Joaqin 'Joe' Claussell's indelible style of long-form spiritual house music re-flaunted to especial somatic ends. Intentionally crafted as a piece that bridges the needs of both the music and dance communities to whom Claussell is mutually close, this is a suite divided into multiple sections that feed on one another; they appose elements of samba, jazz and house, with ambient interstices and even ruminative piano meltdowns ('Healer', 'Heloise'). This ultra limited yellow LP edition is the audiophile's preference, its dynamism best flaunted on the floaty but driving 'Cosmic Arts' mix.

Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's Manifestation project started life as a CD featuring early and work-in-progress versions of some of the New York based DJ/producer's most inspiring and intriguing tracks. Since then, he's delivered a couple of coloured vinyl EPs featuring extended takes on these tracks. There's much to enjoy on this third (and likely final) chapter in the series. First up is a near 12-minute version of Mental Remedy's spiritual house gem 'Noi', where expansive, improvised piano solos twinkle away atop a lo-fi drum machine rhythm and starry synthesizer chords. It's followed by the kalimba and Marimba-heavy delights of The Bayara Citizens' blissful 'Kulimba', while side two boasts the weighty, dense, sweaty and insanely percussive 'Under The Influence' mix of Residue's 'Eno'.

Review: There is something of an irony to the name Joaquin Joe Claussell has given this new Manifestations series on his own Sacred Rhythm label. Why? Well he is a master of long form remixes, tunes that go on for ten-minutes plus and take you on involving trips that at least seem never-ending. Anyway, Long Versions EP 1 it is, and a fine one it is too. There are jubilant carnival house sounds packed with percussion from Mental Remedy, Kalimba showcases that take you deep into a tropical jungle from The Bayara Citizens and more airy, heady deep house from Alejate and afro-drumming excellence on a second tune from The Bayara Citizens.

Review: Joe Claussell's mythical Sacred Rhythm has to be without a doubt one of the best and most reliable house labels around, and having a listen back through its catalogue immediately made us think that this dude was doing outsider house before the term house had even been coined - that's right, hear this! Residual Three is Joe stepping up under different monikers, first as Teenage Music with the loose, vocal-driven house amalgam that is "The Bargain", followed by "Freedum" on his Forest Elektrik name - a bouncy, synth-heavy dance experimentation - and a completely distorted, near beatless jam under the same name, entitled "Circuitry Haywire". Dopeness embodied.

Review: Sacred Rhythm Music, mighty Joe Claussel's personal imprint, has always provided us with the finest and most provocative of house flavours. The label has been an inspiration to many, and producers such as DJ Sotofett have taken its model as a blueprint for their own labels, ones that bring together several different artists and ideas onto one 12". For this one, Claussel is joined by Mental Remedy and "I Pray No More", a guitar-led, mid-tempo house chugger, followed by the deeper than deep "Wail Of The Heart" by Unchained Rhythms. The man appears with a version of "Most Beautiful" by Elements Of Life on the flipside, a bouncy, happy house nugget, while Bolla Afrikan Basement Bo Bo A offer an intricate bundle of percussion on "Drumistic".

Review: It's the big, bad Joe Claussell, and the master reigns in the new year with this absolute stunner of an EP for the Sacred Rhythm label. This is Claussell at his most daring, however, and while you might be expecting some phat-ass house beats and groovy tribalism, the man goes far left of the field on here. The opening "Dungeon Maggots" is a translucent blend of crystal synths and subtle dub echoing, while "Matter Of Factness" injects a delicate house flow into the mix, propelled into motion by a dubby guitar riff. "Affect", "Nuances", and "Seciov" all act as beatless electronic tools, a trio of synth sways to add extra effect to your DJ mix. Yes, Joe!

UU UU UU showcases just that, a bouncing twelve on US label Sacred Rhythm that boasts electric keys, manipulated vocals and a healthy 130 bpm bump. Jephte Guillaume's "Vocal Mix" is smoother than the original in its pitch, the added orchestral strings and brass adding depth. Tek Kale takes the other adaptation by storm, erasing the vocals and concentrating solely on the musical platform. Its ferocious beat against the delicacy of the percussion, strings and brass minus the vocal distraction make this Juno's pick of the bunch.

Review: Paul David Gillman's Colours of the Earth is an album made up of compositions the producer has made over the course of the last decade. Says the artist "I often find myself sitting in the garden just tuning in to whatever nature offers; the sound of the trees as the branches sway back and forth, like a build-up to a bridge of a song or effects." All of that is captured in these beautiful ambient pieces. They are more than just background music as a result - they are living, breathing sonic documents that unfold like miniature movies and with just as much emotion. Overall, it makes for a real journey into organic rhythms and sacred sounds.

Calyptic Rhythm
Review: Dope new vinyl 7" featuring exclusive mixes of this beautiful psychedelic house tour de force 'Gentle Rain' with Acid Rain mixes. Experimenting with the uncomfortable mixture of dance-friendly production and the sternly serious project of psychedelic adventurism, Sacred Rhythm has remixed and released this record by H Garden featuring Joi. These mixes are undoubtedly in a more exploratory tone. Luscious chords set the framework for this piano led masterpiece, all the while drifting along on perfectly placed synth arrangements. 'Gentle Rain' might appear pretty at first; a closer listen will yield more confusing emotional reaction as the record at once soothes and disorients. Of course, anyone experienced in introspective exploration and healing should know nourishment and pain are not mutually exclusive.

Review: For anyone with even the smallest interest in gospel music and its relationship with black American dance music, Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's "Praise" series of mix CDs should be essential listening. Volume six, subtitled "A Prayer For Peace, Love & Wisdom", is every bit as inspired as its predecessor, with Clausell moving between traditional choral gospel music, gospel soul, and soul-jazz, deep house and disco (including Crown Heights Affair's incredible "Say A Prayer") featuring suitably righteous lyrics. To tie the whole thing together, Clausell has also included a number of inspirational and thought-provoking spoken word samples taken from recordings of preachers and black community leaders. It's a brilliant touch.

Review: Joaquin Joe Claussell's magnificent Sacred Rhythm label doesn't deal in standard sounds, only standout sounds. This time out the label offers up a single from Angela Johnson with some heft remixes. The original is as vital and alive as you could imagine, with dancing beats, expressive person and a world of strings and horns that overflow with soul while the vocal soars up top. The Soul Feats's Cosmic Arts Afro dub is just that - arty, starry eyed and dubbed out, while the Love Thyself version is a more elastic soulful house joint of the sort Louie Vega will love.

A Love Supreme Exodus (5:00)
Review: On paper, combining Coltrane jazz classic 'A Love Supreme' and Bob Marley's 'Exodus' in a Cuban jazz style seems like an odd idea, but as Joe Clausell and pianist Matt Jenson proved on their 2013 album as Rebel Tumbao, it's actually a genius one. For proof, check out the original mix, which is tucked away on the flipside of this belated remix EP. The real star attraction though is Ron Trent's A-side remix, which brilliantly re-images the track as a skanking chunk of slow-motion dub house complete with echoing vocal snippets, reverb-laden pianos and plenty of Latin and African style hand percussion. Eqwel's accompanying 'Dub Bass Mix', a more glitchy, electronic affair, is also well worth a listen.

Modus Operandi (6:31)
Review: This is a record that will never date so it's no wonder that Sacred Rhythms are back with a reissue of it after the original sold out in quick fashion. It finds Slam Mode serve up four hugely involving and atmospheric tracks steeped in ambiance. 'Ogman' is humid, dusty and spiritual with its late-night bass subtleties and sustained chords. 'Mientra Duermes' (Reimagined) has a celestial melodic feel over ramshackle house drums and 'Monopole' gets heavy on cancerous and dubbed-out drums with more cosmic chord work to expand your mind. 'Modus Operandi' is a lush and jazzy deep jungle workout to close.

Lam Mode (Tau Ceti 49 Minutes DJ mix)
Review: 'Tau Cceti', Slam Mode's first album-length excursion, is unusual in a number of ways - not least because it's headline attraction is a 49-minute studio DJ mix that explores their sound-world. As far as we can make out, the mix (track five) is almost entirely made up of their productions (and in some cases just elements of them) and as such is one of the finest single explorations of their deep, spacey, spiritual and largely club-ready sound. The four full-length tracks featured, which appear within the mix, are superb too. There's deeply intergalactic techno ('Monpole'), rubbery and string-laden nu-jazz ('Watercolours'), tech-tinged, vocal-sporting deep house iciness ('Simple Melena Perez (Sedation in Noise Mix)', and the kind of deep, dreamy drum and bass that used to be the preserve of LTJ Bukem's Good Looking Records imprint ('Modus Operandi').

The Soul Feast (acappella EFXS) (6:54)
Review: In 2009, two years after the original version appeared on Somi's debut album "Red Soil In My Eyes", Joaquin "Joe" Claussell and Brian Bacchus joined forces as Soul Feast to remix Fela Kuti cover "African Lady". A decade on, Claussell has decided to reissue the package's most potent and percussive moment, the layered "Drum Dub" on a tasty seven-inch single. While there are key elements of Somi's original version present - the killer bassline, some delay-laden horns and fleeting glimpses of guitar - the mix is dominated by layered Afro-house percussion. This time round, the mix comes backed with an "Acapella EFXS" version, which contains all of Somi's superb vocal and is closer in tone to the duo's 2009 club mix. Like the A-side, it's superb.

Review: Joe Claussell's Sacred Rhythm label is a vessel for him to explore the deep rooted culture behind his most prominent output in the house world. Travelling far and wide into African musical tradition, Claussell and select like-minded souls often present their most profound work through this outlet, and so it goes on this enchanting collection of rhythm studies, folk spirituals and works in progress. It's a compelling insight into the working practices of a musical master, a meaningful journey into the origins of so much modern music, and an inventive new expression all in one, scattered out like a sketchbook we're privileged to take a peep at.
