Review: Mainz-based house hooligan Butch teams up with good studio pal Christian Vogt (Yellow Tail/Rebirth) once again for their new thumper - a remix of Andy Gibbs of The Bee Gees' 1980 hit "Desire". Said to have been circulating for more than a year on selected USB sticks, it's finally available for all. The sexy and low slung main remix is sure to burn up any dancefloor, and is backed by a groovy and swing-fuelled dub version, a handy and functional drum tool and a nifty vocal tool too. It's what Gerd Janson & Co. best described themselves as "blue-eyed R&B house.. made to please and evoke those unifying and uplifting dancefloor moments".

Review: Veteran Swiss producer (and Character label boss) Sam Geiser aka Deetron makes his debut on Running Back, serving up yet more of his idiosyncratic hi-tech soul explorations. From the bass-driven disco muscle of "Body Electric" - all flanged rhythms and uplifting rave pianos galore, the pure euphoric energy of "T-Symmetry" and its unrepentant Motor City aesthetic, to epic B side cut "Txt" which channels the most emotive elements of Detroit's legacy. Comes complete with a "Beatless Version" - the kind of track you could imagine the likes of Derrick May or Laurent Garnier dropping in the middle of their set.

Review: Gerd Janson and Maurice Fulton continue their mutually beneficial partnership with this Running Back 12" edition of DJ Nori's wonderful Bubbletease debut We Don't Know. Originally released digitally earlier this summer, Nori's four tracks were co-produced by Fulton and, as with anything that blessed with Maurice's touch, are predictably excellent. There's a touch of melancholic, acid-flecked stargazing in the shape of "Spaceg" (all heady synth melodies, fuzzy bass and 808 cowbells), some out-there, beatless space calypso (the unwieldy "We Don't Know"), and a mighty chunk of Syclops-ish wonk-jack ("80s Drugs"). Oh, and a moody, Detroit-influenced Fulton remix of "Happy Sunday" that breaks into a space disco jam near the end.

Review: Running Back Incantations was created as a series of non-dancefloor releases and its fifth edition came from Austrian producer Daniel Meuzard aka Feater earlier this year. The "Socialo Bianco" LP utilised the EMS Synthi AKS, which he painstakingly recorded entirely by hand and straight on to tape. The track lifted from the LP entitled "Time Million" has already received remixes by legends such as Ricardo Villalobos and Pepe Bradock on the first volume of reworks, followed by current scene heroes Pangaea and Krystal Klear on the second. On this third volume, Jamaican dub/reggae drummer with a Jah given gift for music, Blood Shanti takes over the whole release and serves up four perspectives. Feel the pure elation of the "Main Mix", followed by three jamdown versions: "Dub #2" works those delays and echoes to full effect in true old school style, while "Dub #3" veers into similar sonic territory as legendary dub producer Adrian Sherwood.

  1. Peace Bird (8:37)

  3. Rymd01 (6:20)
Review: The Swedish deep house duo of Alexander Berg (Dorisburg) and Nils Krogh (Arkajo) aka Genius Of Time are back outside of their established Aniara imprint for the second time on Running Back since 2014's Juno Jam EP. It has been a long time between drinks, with Krogh pursuing some great solo stuff as Arkajo and Berg performing in Sebastian Mullaert's Circle Of Live. This terrific new EP features the bittersweet "Peace Bird" that follows through with warm Rhodes keys, woody percussion and an all-round lo-slung swagger. The spacey and understated "Smiling Into Eternity" follows through on the B side, followed by the reduced and emotive disco of "Rymd01". Great stuff once again by the Gothenburg-based duo.

Techno
  1. Perth (Dusky remix) (6:15)
  2. Teo Techno (Radio Slave disco dub) (10:16)
Review: As the matter-of-fact title makes clear, this 12" is the first in a series of EPs offering up fresh reworks of tracks from KiNK's superb 2017 album "Playground". These revisions are, we'd suggest, rather large. Check, for example, the celebratory rush that is Dusky's rambunctious reworking of "Perth", which builds on waves of luscious chords and snappy beats before turning into a stab-happy, riff-heavy main room slammer of the highest order. Arguably even better is the druggy, metallic pulse of Radio Slave's ten-minute "Disco Dub" of "Teo Techno". It doesn't sound like disco, of course, but rather a throbbing, angular trip into Berlin techno territory that's as mind-altering as it is heavy.

  1. Morning Come
  2. Turning
  3. Green Flash
  4. Femme Cosmic
Review: It's fair to say Running Back have not put a foot wrong this year with headline releases from Tiger & Woods and Todd Terje complemented by some lesser celebrated but by no means less impressive twelve inches from Marco Passarani, Disco Nihilist and that stunning Son Of Sam reissue. Their latest release sees the focus shift to another under the radar producer in Suzanne Kraft, whose Green Flash EP makes for one of this year's most attractive releases thanks to distinctive green and yellow patterns that adorn the cover art. Tellingly, the music itself proves to be even better, adopting a pleasantly midtempo poise on "Morning Come" with swathes of melodies infused with sunset gradually rising to the fore. This joyous feeling flushes through the rest of the EP with both "Turning" and the title track sounding like Tiger & Woods performing from the deep end of the pool. "Femme Cosmic" provides an excellent finish to proceedings, unfolding from a tinnily reverberant slowed down proto house drawl into some midnight cruise through dubbed out mutant 80s disco boogie.

Euphoric Dreams (Kink remixes) (hand-stamped 12")

  1. Euphoric Dreams (KiNK remix) (6:00)
  2. Euphoric Dreams (KiNK Drums & Bass mix) (5:38)
Review: Released earlier this year to critical acclaim, Krystal Klear's "Euphoric Dreams" was a non-stop rush of neo-trance synthesizer refrains and melodic, life-affirming electronics. Here, Kink turns in his takes on the track, starting with a formidably filthy, bass-heavy take that flits between euphoric, synth-heavy sections and dark, stripped-back grooves. It's neo-trance, Jim, but not as we know it! The veteran producer's flipside "Drums & Bass Mix" removes the giddy and glassy-eyed synth parts, instead layering psychedelic acid lines atop thumping, trance-inducing beats and Belgian hardcore style "Hoover" bass. In other words, it's a properly intense techno throb-job.

Review: If you've danced at house-focused clubs and festivals this year, there's a strong chance that you've strut your stuff plenty of times to Krystal Klear's "Neutron Dance". The hooky, riff-heavy original version isn't included on this remix package, but happily the assembled reworks are all killers in their own right. We're particularly enjoying the squeezable synth bass, punchy machine drums and fluid piano solos that catch the ear on Paul Woolford's ace "Jolly Roger Version", not to mention the sweaty breakbeats, restless drum machine cowbells and thrusting New York freestyle bass underpinning Fango's fantastic take. Elsewhere, Gerd Janson straps on his "Birkies" and re-imagines the cut as a retro-futurist house treat while Mano Le Tough doffs a cap towards Italo-disco and throbbing big room house.

Review: Smoky techno futurist Redshape dons his famously featureless mask once more, this time for an outing on regular home label, Running Back. Of course, the German's music is anything but feature-less, as this EP confirms once more. Opener "Rise" has scintillating chords draped over busy, shuffling, breaky-drums that find Redshape cooking up some funk, which is rare for him. We dig. A "Bonus Beats" and "Acappella" mix are included for adventurous DJs, while the flip sweeps you off your feet on a breezy, floating techno groove that is riddled with synths that flutter in warm solar winds. A firmly rooted and rolling Motor Mix of "Rise" closes out yet another essential Reshape offering.

  1. Not Also You (6:54)
  2. Not You Also (7:21)
Review: Although Henrik Schwarz has kept himself busy in recent years, it's been a while since he released a full-throttle dancefloor workout. This debut appearance on Gerd Janson's Running Back label - the German producer's first solo single 2013 - is arguably his most forthright and floor-friendly missive since the turn of the decade. "Not Only You" is a thumping techno stomper, where ragged, mutant, repetitive lead lines are propelled forwards by some seriously good drum machine programming. Flipside "Not You Also" offers a slightly more eccentric riff on the same blueprint, with Schwarz adding some eccentric spoken word segments and a couple of bold synth fills.

Review: Ever since Gerd Janson snapped up his fine Chord Memories E.P back in 2014, Shan has enjoyed a productive relationship with Running Back. City Never Sleeps marks the Frankfurt producer's third outing on the hyped house imprint, and boasts a quartet of retro-futurist treats. He doffs a cap to the melodious analogue deep house of the Burrell Brothers and Larry Heard on the delicious title track, before effortlessly emphasizing his own chunky, cymbal-heavy groove on the subtly acid-flecked "Lin FM". "Caiber" sees him sending shivers down the spine via warehouse-friendly piano riifs and boisterous house breakbeats, while closer "691 Beats" is a pulsating, bass-heavy drum workout with added rave riffs.

  1. Mutter (10:33)
  2. Mutter (Beatless version) (10:32)
Review: Gerd Janson's Running back taps into some local talent courtesy of Stuttgart DJ / producer Konstantin Sibold. The title track is a classic slice of German techno; it has shades of early Force Inc thanks to its tranced out chords and pace - cruising along just below 130bpm for its ten-minute duration - and the raw energy of Tresor in the shape of its gnarly acid line. The musical elements sound much more pronounced on the beatless version, with the chords assuming a slightly menacing edge. However, this is really all about the original version, a tripped out, hypnotic that digs deep into the German electronic music psyche.

Review: ** Running Back Repress for the Terje Fans **Terje Olsen doesn't release many records, but when he does they tend to be pretty special. This surprise EP for Running Back is his only his fifth original single in seven years, but it's arguably his best yet. "Ragysh" is devilishly simple, a naggingly hypnotic house/ electronic disco head-nodder that builds to a gasping climax of chic, intergalactic melodies. It's partnered by "Bonysh", a dubwise beats track that ekes maximum thrills from little more than ever-changing percussion. B-side "Snooze For Love" - available in dancefloor and downtempo versions - continues the stargazing theme, offering up an uber-Balearic mix of bleep melodies, dozy chords and sleepwalking percussion.
