Review: Green Gartside is the Welsh frontman of cult band Scritti Polltti, here in solo mode on Rough Trade His latest 7" finally gets a release after various delays and on it are two covers of songs originally recorded by Anne Briggs, who is often regarded as one of the great British folk singers. The originals came out in 1971 on Briggs album The Time Has Come (and has also been re-released this year). In the hands of the so-called brainiest man in pop they become fresh propositions with interesting new perspectives.

Review: Considering it was only last year when Sleaford Mods dropped their prized UK Top 10 LP 'Eton Alive' it's almost jarring they should now unveil a Best Of, of sorts. It's hardly time to reflect when you're one of the most vital acts in contemporary British pop. But then the record stands up on its own merit, too, more than living up to the name by offering an insight into the ties - or rather tracks - that bind together the outfit's seven year career to date. Those familiar with the work of Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn will not be surprised to learn the contents here are visceral, heartfelt, stubborn, angry, and stood with tongue firmly in cheek. Observations from an island still riddled with inequality and led by donkeys, set to the kind of catchy but raw guitar, sequencer and drum work that can't help but take you for a ride.

  1. Dark Blue (6:32)
  2. BRJ (7:43)
Review: London-based eight piece band, Caroline, have been gradually garnering a reputation for quietly confident, and deceptively commanding work since then. Now having racked up plenty of hours on stage, on the road and in the studio, the trio are ready to deliver their highly-anticipated debut single, and it hasn't disappointed anybody in this office. 'Dark Blue' is certainly one for the more patient out there. Taking almost two-and-a-half minutes to introduce its gliding, woozy harmony before any lyrics are heard, it's a masterclass in gradual build and switching up the intensity of instrumental arrangements. Folky, meditative fare, it nods to the jazzier end of bands like His Name Is Alive. Flip the script to find 'BRJ', which explores the hypnotic potential of simple refrains, taking listeners close to experimental drone work, here with live strings and bass doing the lulling.

Review: There's a grandiose, finishing credits vibe to the first track on Pinegrove's latest (and first for the legendary Rough Trade label). Solid guitars, melodic vocals and staccato piano riffs mark this out as emotionally-charged garage rock from the off, although don't expect this to be all the perfect soundtrack to a boozy Saturday with friends in your flat. Things become a little more sombre, or at least introverted and self-reflective as the tracks move on. "The Alarmist" sounds like a man having his heart stamped on by crushed dreams and shattered illusions, somehow finding strength to continue until the real gritty chords land. The final chapter, "Marigold" itself, is a whispering, atmospheric thing of staggering beauty that closes us out with a meditative offering. Tracks like "Hairpin" satisfy desires for classic folk traditions - more whisky on the veranda than microbrewery bottles in a Brooklyn apartment.

Review: Fans of Josienne Clarke have been chomping at the bit to wrap their ears around this one for some time. The debut solo album from an award-winning career, the finished product is every bit as good as we hoped, offering that inherently sorrowful vocal delivery combined with pared back instrumentals that stop just short of being truly barren. It's a record about learning to stand on your own, irrespective of circumstances, and therefore a record about all that life is and can be. Reflective in nature, these are lamentations on mistakes made, the subsequent fallout, and eventual redemption by way of not hiding the scars, but using them to ensure history doesn't repeat itself. Joined by experimental pianist Elliot Galvin, jazz percussionist Dave Hamblett, harpist Mary Ann Kennedy and Sonny Johns on bass and guitar, it's tender, heart-wrenching and utterly mesmerising.

Review: In many ways "Prolix", the opening track of Irish punks Girl Band's sophomore album - is their most symbolic track to date. Not much happens, just a long, whirring, abstract refrain. And that's precisely the point. For almost two-minutes the album isn't doing nothing, but it is lying dormant, waiting to explode back into life. And explode it does, with "Going Norway" setting the bar high in terms of visceral, uncompromising and unforgiving music. Workouts like "Salmon Of Knowledge" recall wall of sound wormholes Liars taking us down in their most guitar heavy periods, with "Laggard" serving to accentuate the fact that these guys really do like to experiment. Scuzzy guitars growing from what sounds like an alarm into something far more immersive, before white noise is cut and we're left with gritty vocals and staccato drums, for a little while at least. Powerful stuff indeed.

Review: A Welsh language album with a couple of verses in Zulu and an English title. If one thing was already clear about the enigmatic Gruff Rhys it's that he doesn't play strictly by numbers, making "Pang!" a logical addition to this oeuvre. If, of course, you're familiar with his oeuvre. Opening with its titular track, the artist immediately makes the few remaining newcomers to his work aware of his deft skills. Complex guitar instrumentation, soft, padding, exotic drum arrangements and - for most people - foreign lyrics. We're immediately transported to faraway climes, and it's here we stay. Playful percussion and looped six strings on "Niwl O Anwiredd". The celebratory "Ara Deg (Ddaw'r Awen)", which recalls sub-Saharan crossover pop. The surreal atmosphere of "Digidigol" - where marching band meets opera in a haze of lilting chords. Put simply, it might be Rhys' most explorative yet, and that's saying something.

They make this overtly known from the start with the supercharged opener that is "953", introducing an album that is said to have laid down eight of the record's nine tracks in just five days. Drums are fast and skittering, rhythms are dancey and guitars keep it Madchester jangley. "Speedway" (is that a wry Prodigy reference?) is among the album's highlights alongside the punk-funky "bmbmbm" and the short but trippy "Years Ago". With a 100 per cent backing by UK music institution Rough Trade: meet this generation's newest sensation.

Review: Never too shy for irony, Australian rock band from Melbourne, Amyl and The Sniffers, are keeping the mullet cuts and beer spitting sound of the southern land's sound well alive. It's Rough Trade that have taken up Amyl and The Sniffers for their debut album recorded in Sheffield with Ross Orton towards the end of 2018. Six months on and the four piece are rattling the walls more than ever with a raucous ballyhoo of garage-punk that sees the band's ferocious Pouges-y mix of Irish drunkenness hit the wall with the Californian sounds of Pennywise and Australia's own Frenzal Rhomb. With thrashings of guitars, unique and raw Australianisms, and sweaty, smashing drums: Amyl and The Sniffers are popping off.

Review: Slingin' slangin guitars, skittering drums and synths from BRIT School graduates Black Midi deliver a sound that's semi-ironic with all matter of punk leanings. With references abound to New York's heyday of experimental new wave and art rock, this two-track 12" for Rough Trade sees the four-piece edge that bit closer to their anticipated debut album called Schlagenheim. Due for a release this June, most of Schlagenheim was said to have been laid down in five days with producer Dan Carey (Bat for Lashes, Bloc Party) and these two tracks go to some length in introducing the band's raw talent, their meteoric rise and vision of a gone but not forgotten CBGBs.

Review: Is it the sweet, androgynous and adolescence tones of Bridie Monds-Watson vocals that make the music of SOAK so intriguing. Inside the record you'll find melancholic indie numbers (think something along the lines of Lykke Li and LadyHawke) in tracks like "Knock Me Off My Feet" to more mellow jazz tonics in "Fall Asleep/Backseat". Strongly supported by the Rough Trade empire, the Northern Irish musician's latest album sees her moving closer toward pop than heard before on her 2016 Mercury Prize nominated album: Before We Forgot How To Dream. With the album's intro setting something of a scene for the music, the album dips and dives through a collage of colours and sounds that makes Grim Town an album worth exploring and getting lost in.
