Afrosound - "Tiro Al Blanco" (2:51)
Los Golden Boys - "Se Trabo La Banda" (2:13)
Review: The Spanish label Rockafort is having a busy old time of it right now. They are in the midst of a superb run of 7"s that bring the best of classic cumbia back to the fore. This one has again been taken from the vast vaults of the legendary Colombian cumbia label Disco Fuentes. The a-side is from Afrosound who were famed for a hybrid sound that came in response to the early 1970's Chicha movement in Peru and Bolivia. On the flip, it's Los Golden Boys - which believe it or not translates to The Golden Boys - with the hefty drum funk and singing guitars of 'Se Trabo La Banda.'

Easy Baby (4:25)
Geriatric Dance (3:04)
Review: Dedicated to the Hammond-heavy 1960s soul-jazz sounds of Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Grant Green and Reuben Wilson, the Beat Bronco Organ Trio are a fresh outfit with classic inspirations. The Madrid threesome's debut single is something of a retro-futurist treat. We're really enjoying A-side "Easy Baby", a loose and languid fusion of ear-pleasing Hammond licks, laidback, breakbeat-driven drums and flanged jazz guitars that impressively increases in intensity throughout, culminating in a frenzy of sweaty drums and eyes-closed guitar solos. "Geriatric Dance", meanwhile, is even more up-tempo, with high octane Hammond and jazz guitar solos stretching out over a feverish funk drumbeat.

Funk
Missoula-Nairobi (part 1) (3:21)
Missoula-Nairobi (part 2) (2:43)
Review: More fabulous, funk-fuelled brilliance from the Beat Bronco Organ Trio, who earlier in the year delivered a fine debut album on Swiss imprint Rocafort Records (the must-check Road Trip). This two-part missive is not featured on that set, and instead sees them deliver a decidedly tropical fusion of loose-limbed, Tony Allen-style polyrhythmic drums, bubbly organ riffs, warming bass and reverb-laden guitar riffs that reminded us a little of both heady psyche-rock and Ghanaian Highlife. 'Missoula-Nairobi (Part 1)' is arguably the more potent and focused of the pair, with just a little more dancefloor grunt, though the flipside 'Part 2' version, with its extended solos and more freestyle feel, is every bit as alluring.

Yesterday Was History (TCOC Yesterdub mix) (3:44)
Review: Spanish label Rocafort started 2019 by releasing their first dub reggae "45", so it's fitting that they are ending the year with a sequel from the same act, The Circle of Confusion. Like its' predecessor, "Yesterday Was History" features lead vocals from Studio 1 singer Cornell Campbell. His soulful intonation works wonderfully above the band's hazy, heavy and ear-pleasing digi-dub backing track. Arguably even better is the band's own flipside "Dub" mix, which is as weighty, spaced out and intoxicating as the largely digital dubs pioneered by British scene stalwart Mad Professor. It's worth buying the seven-inch just to get your hands on it.

Soul Of A Lion (dub mix) (4:21)
Review: The Circle of Confusion are a Swiss dub production duo, who, adding to their fast-growing repertoire of releases, now drop 'Soul Of A Lion', which features Wayne Paul, an English reggae singer who was mostly active in the 90s and 2000s. Though Paul disappeared from the scene towards the end of that period, he now returns with a defiant message of big-feline hope and reminiscence, sung against a modern reggae backing with a polished, 80s roots feel. "How you feeling right now... now that you're older and wiser?" he asks in the song. Alll the better now you're back, thanks for asking.

Review: A prize gem in Rocafort's Africa Gone Funkee crown, "Aw' Ye Douba Ke" was the final salvo of Burkina-born Cisse's debut album Les Vautours. Kudos to the Rocafort crew for this 7" reissue! With its soft build, the classic highlife guitars play the perfect subtle backdrop for Cisse's strong yearning vocals as we develop into something really funky indeed with big horn and organ solos. Flip for a special, percussion-heavy shake-up of his 1975 single "A Son Magni". Overwhelming.

Hank Carbo - "Bad Luck" (2:25)
Review: Serious funk fire from the brothers Carbo right here. "Fox In A Mini Skirt" hits hard with a sweaty northern soul feel. Fresh from 68, it's all about the big band builds, ballsy backing vocals and sense of momentum that still kicks just has hard today. "Bad Luck" on the B sees Hank going it solo on the previously super-rare "Bad Luck" that's much sleazier and blues-based and stripped back. Both stone cold cuts, the only misfortune here would be for you to sleep on this.

Help Your Brothers (2:38)
Review: Barcelona's premier outlet for funk, Rocafort, hit paydirt with this licensed reissue of some genuine rare funk from across the tracks in New York. Cross Bronx Expressway were originally a house band for J&S Records owned by Zelma Sanders. As legend goes, the female record producer was known to call at the last minute to gather her band for a recording session. These two cuts originate from the rare time the Cross Bronx Expressway were afforded in the studio and were done in only a couple of takes. Consisting of self-taught musicians, the Cross Bronx Expressway were evidently born with the funk in them on the basis of this 7"! "Help Your Brothers" is killer.

Celia Cruz Y La Sonora Matancera - "Mi Bomba Sono" (2:37)
Joey Pastrana Y Su Orquesta - "A Bailar Oriza" (2:54)
Review: In a bid to celebrate the widespread influence of Afro-Cuban music - and in particular the work of one of Cuba's most storied songwriters, Silvestre Mendez - the Rocafort Records crew has decided to dig into the archives and offer up two stone cold classics from the golden age of Cuban music. On side A you'll find Celia Cruz and La Sonora Matancera's 1963 version of "Mi Bomba Sono", an infectious dancefloor number in which Cruz's fantastic vocals rise above a Tito Puente style rhythm, squealing horns and cheeky pianos. Over on the flip you'll find the killer salsa vibes of Joey Pastrana and his Latin orchestra's superb version of "A Bailar Oriza". Even more percussive than the A-side, it's absolutely essential.

Fight Fire With Fire (2:51)
Review: Scorching soul heat from Atlanta: once-married couple Delia Gartrell and James Shaw (best known as The Mighty Hannibal) unleashed a short-but-singeing run of 45s around the late 60s/early 70 and here are two of their hottest moments. "I Must Be Doing Something Right" comes with a belting gospel backing chorus and a nagging hook you've definitely felt before. "Fight Fire With Fire" is even hotter; fuzzy electronic guitar, orchestral backing and a staccato chorus that brings floors to their knees, this is nothing short of essential.

Onbesli (7:07)
Review: Rocafort Records has excelled itself once again with this release, a four-track journey into "oriental jazz" by a quartet of international musicians helmed by young Turkish pianist, composer and arranger Gokhan Surer. He describes his style as "world, fusion, jazz", which is a neat summary of the exotic, evocative and emotion-rich material on offer. Check first the warm occidental jazz shuffle of "Chimera" before recoiling in wonder at the Turkish strings, double bass, hushed percussion and jazz-funk style electric piano solos of "Dere". Over on side B, "Makam Rasta" is an inspired fusion of reggae, jazz-funk and Arabian instrumentation, while "Onbesli" is a rolling fusion cut underpinned by hip-hop style beats.

Review: Brass meets hip-hop on this swaggalicious new single from, yes, you guessed it, the Hip Horns Brass Collective. Boasting over eight band members, HHBC have also enlisted the special trumpet chops of local Italian jazz great Tito Bonacera, as well as the production talent of one HOSS$ Benitez, to produce two slow-sauntering, fat, swelling brass clangers. 'Thunder' steals the A, while 'Marathon Runner' is an intriguing, audiophilic and minimal turnover.

Review: Destination 1970: after a string of heartfelt cuts on the likes of Expo, Bobby Jones makes himself known on little known Detroit label Kack Records. Lost in midst of times and long forgotten crates, he's not enjoyed the microscopic revival like so many Chicago crooners of the time. Until now. "Welcome Back A Foolish Man" is a full of orchestral drama and just a little northern stomp while "Lovin' Hard Livin' Good" hits with a wider sense of emotion with prominent strings, rolling percussion and dreamboat backing harmonies. Review: It's more chilly, worldly outsider jazz gear from Barcelona's excellent Rocafort imprint; this time the crew return with the one-man show Kind & Kinky Zoo alongside Adam Gibbons, both making their debut for the label with this smart two-tracker. "Wonder Bra" is a solo mission from K&KZ, a fast-paced drum locomotive with plenty of whistling organs flying around in the high-ends, while Lack Of Afro's remix of "VLAM" by K&KZ and Adam Gibbons is a funkier, more laid-back swinger for a bit of one, two, three four on the dancefloor. Tidy 7" for the soul lovers!

Review: Electro-disco bordering on future funk from Kokoro Disco San, the Barcelona trio behind the excellent 'Isla Fantasia' released a few years back. On the A-side comes 'The Brightest Light', corralling enchanting female vocals (those of Brigitte Emaga) on a driving, French-house reminiscent accompaniment, amount to a watery poolside bounce. The B-side's 'Mistura Magica', meanwhile, is skewed to be more organic and comes as an impactful but relaxed foray through tropical futurisms and technicolour flute soarings by Irene Reig.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface mark on the record, but otherwise in excellent condition***

Spanish label Rocafort specializes not only in reissues, but also fresh jams that sound like they could have been produced in the 1970s and early '80s. Here they offer up something that combines contemporary production chops, real instrumentation and classic influences. It comes from debutant Spanish trio Kokoro Disco San, a trio of experienced musicians with a passion for goodtime grooves. You'll find a particularly hot and heavy disco groove at the heart of "Isla Fantasia", a track marked out by tasty jazz-funk instrumental flourishes and the kind of spacey synth lines most often associated with the likes of Dexter Wansel and Herbie Hancock. There's more meandering deep space synths on flipside "Sonic Feeling", a lolloping disco-boogie number powered by a classic sounding walking bassline and layered percussion.

It's not exactly clear where, or indeed when, exactly the band came from, but their sound is all you need to worry about. 'Blue G' is a lilting, shuffling message of love and support for future generations, and from the message to the effervescent musicality, it's a no-brainer. On the flip, 'That Good Thing' is an instrumental that spirals outwards on the sweetest keys, joyous brass and dreamy guitar, driven by a pattering drum section to radiate good vibes wherever it's played.

They may be based in Zurich, but their assembled ensemble has a deeply rooted sound which brings a vibrant modern twist to the foundations laid down by the likes of Fela Kuti. They've been teasing their fully fledged arrival since 2022 when we first heard their debut single 'Blue G', but finally Rocafort are able to present their first album. It's a true celebration of West African music culture, fronted by Nongoma Ndlovu on the lion's share of vocal duties and with Eric Owusu laying down the djembe and kpanlogo in front of Alexis Malefakis' rhythm section. It's a joyous album from start to finish that does credit to the Afrobeat tradition while adding its own touches to the mix.

"Funky Splash" is a rainbow of percussion, doubled up guitar riffs and outer planetary synths while "O Caminho Do Bem" is pure Lalo Schifrin cinematica laced with just the right level of psychedelic elements and dancefloor sweat. Both are quintessential modern funk instrumental. And if you're feeling these, track down the full album. Highly recommended.

Review: For their latest must-check release, Rocafort Records has dipped into the Seattle soul scene in order to showcase the sounds of two interconnected bands, both of which are directed by (and feature performances from) trumpeter Joel Ricci, bassist Joel Gray and saxophonist Art Brown. On the A-side, the L.B's deliver a brilliantly infectious, percussive, funky and horn-heavy cover of Willie Bobo's rare groove classic 'Broasted or Fried'. It sounds like it was recorded live at an electric, energy-charged session - as if you're eves dropping on an intimate backyard funk gig. Equally as potent - if a little deeper, slower and more solo-laden - is the South Path Ensemble's impressive flipside, 'Stop Tryin'.

Alfredito Linares Y Su Salsa Star - "Mi Nuevo Ritmo" (3:26)
Review: Last year Rocafort Records delivered a rather good retrospective of the early works of Peruvian band-leader Alfredito Linares, an unheralded star of Latin jazz and later salsa and boogaloo who made some seriously good music in the late 1960s and '70s. This sequel, which features six scintillating tracks stretched across three seven-inch singles, tells the next chapter of the story, following Linares' relocation to Cali, Colombia in the early '70s. What's an offer is a heavy, club-ready mixture of righteous boogaloo - all infectious grooves, loose-limbed South American percussion, breathless group vocals and rising, big band style horns - and breezy salsa workouts, all of which hits the spot and then some.

Review: Having previously compiled two boxsets of dusty, sought-after "Nuyorican" boogaloo and salsa jams, Rocafort Records has decided to continue on a similar tip via a triple seven-inch set focusing on the early works of Peruvian artist Alfredito Linares. The set mines his first two albums, El Pito Y Otros Exitos (1968) and Yo Traigo Boogaloo (1969), delivering horn-heavy, percussion-rich, piano-sporting boogaloo and salsa treats. Our picks include superb opener 'Cool', the expansive vibraphone solos and "party atmos" style spoken word vocals of 'Tutu Tata' and the downlow brilliance of closing cut 'Sin Tu Querer'. Throw in extensive liner notes by DJ Timber and you have an indispensable package.

Plastic People (vocal) (3:17)

Review: Frequently seen passing hands for large sums, Tony Kalangis's 1974 supreme groove cut "Plastic People" gets a long overdue reissue. Its writhing funk groove a seminal standard for collectors lucky enough to have it, Tony's falsetto and slippery guitar work are as timeless now as they were almost 45 years ago. And the instrumental still bangs, too. Funk realism: The only thing plastic here is the wax.

Review: Arguably best-known for inspiring the name of much-missed London club space 'Plastic People', Living Color's self-released debut '45' has long been an in-demand item amongst funk and soul collectors. Props then to Rocafort Records for delivering this fully-licensed reissue of the 1974 gem. The band's original full vocal version is little less than brilliant, with heady horn lines, crunchy Clavinet riffs and the group's inspired vocals rising above a relaxed but floor-friendly funk groove. As it did back in the 70s, it comes backed with a similarly inspired instrumental mix that cannily makes great use of the original's righteous female backing vocals.

Si Algun Dia Has De Caer
Papeles Rotos
Review: Mampon unleash their latest Afrobeat enchantment on a new 7" release. 'Si Algun Dia Has De Caer' is a clean, bouncing neo-Afrobeat whirlwind, combining the infectious vocals of Spanish singer Hector Rodriguez with a dynamic backup production that is as irresistible as it is ineluctable. The B-side pares back the dance and pierces the political veil, with a Spanish-language plea to listeners to carve out their own paths in life, regardless of cost.

Review: Spanish outfit Mampon is a 10-piece Afrobeat collective that is hear to get you dancing liek you have never dance before. And what better time to do that as we emerge from lockdown, with the sun beating down? The single they serve up here on Rocafort is 'Quierete,' with its mad horns, juggling beats, organic percussion and angular guitar riffs all making you shake every bone in your body utterly loose. The call and response vocals are hypnotic and finish the party in style. There is a real disco vibe to the flip side remix courtesy of another Latino artist, Voodoocuts

Review: Oscar Martos is a Madrid based producer who really manages to get you swinging the hips with this lush new two tracker on Rocafort. Cuban singer Essy guests on both of the tracks and brings a steamy and seductive sound that meshes perfectly with the unhurried, organic grooves below. The deep and sultry opener 'So Lonely' has a touch of 90s r&b to it with its hooky melodies and unfussy, lo-fi production vibe. 'Mi Vida' brings a more Latin-tinged vibe and more prominent keys that sure are romantic and loved-up. A brilliant brace from Martos.

Queen 16 Theme (3:00)
Review: Germany's Mighty Mocambos are one of the flagship funk outfits on the scene right now and this new 45rpm on Rocafort Records shows why. It was recorded live on tape during the Queen 16 B-Girl battle in Berlin back in 2022. Opener 'International Cypher' brings a fresh take on funk with oriental overtones thanks to an electric Phin, which is a Thai guitar, being heavily deployed throughout over bristling drums that are raw and hit hard. On the flip, 'Queen 16 Theme' is more lively and loose limbed with a jumble of drums and expressive horns leading the charge.
