Dreadmaul & Tobe:n - "Homunculus" (6:08)
LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.

Review: Swiss label re:st: Music welcomes accomplished beatmaker Cedar for another of their leftfield ambient extractions here. Opener 'Transfer' drops you right in at the deep end, with a rolling, rubbery kick drum making a hypnotic rhythm as deft ambient designs and subtle sci-fi cues fill in the spaces. 'Sferics' is a similar pairing of driving and dynamic rhythm with cavernous open spaces while 'Proxima' gets more frosty, with icy minimal synths and a beat that rocks back and forth on its heels as if stuck in some northern tundra. 'VLF' is the most minimalistic of the lot, a barely-there but hugely compelling rhythm with sonar pulses from a distant planet.

Review: Destination Romania: Eduard Costea returns to re:st with a five-track trip to the very fringes. From the spacious, absent minded drumset of opener "Anthromorphism" right through the final data glitch of "Asymmetric Attitudes", it's a singular escapade that joins dots between jungle, experimentalism and futurism. Duck from the cascading data of "Consequentialism", weave amid the rolling breaks of "Veil Of Ignorance", dig deep and buckle up...

Review: DBL successfully fused experimental D&B, half-step and techno tropes on the "Forma/Materia" two-tracker. Here they re-establish their occasional studio partnership with a first collaborative full-length. It's a pleasingly atmospheric and imaginative affair, with the pair offering up tracks that variously mix and match elements of unearthly ambient, off-kilter drum and bass, broken techno, murky post-dubstep rhythms, experimental electronica, the metallic clonk of industrial and the hazy hypnotism of dub techno. Musically it's hard to pin down due to the wide variety of interestingly programmed rhythms, though the album's uniformly paranoid sense of impending darkness, coupled with occasional glimpses of musical positivity, ensures a coherent aural vision.

Review: Lo-fi, droning ambience from Turkish producer Ekin Üzeltüzenci aka. Ekin Fil here. ‘Rosewood Untitled’ is themed after the resistance of nature, drawing a hard line between concepts of the manmade and natural - by sonically presenting the latter as pure, slowly restless, and laden in a deep, almost unrecoverable texture. For Ekin, the inspiration behind the album came after witnessing huge forest fires in Turkey, which occurred at the same time as the COVID pandemic. What follows is a mournful reminiscence on fatal natural processes, through looping sonic envelopes and distant melodies.

Pray (6:29)
Lord Have Mercy (5:12)
Repose (5:13)
Review: Eusebeia returns to re:st after time spent traversing labels like Mindtrick and Western Lore, bringing that strung out dub techno ambience to bear on four more electronic outliers for the experimental corner of your record collection. "Cardinal" is a slow lurching, hugely atmospheric piece that moves like a sound installation, while "Pray" drops some more discernible beats around haunting fugues that take a little hint of Jon Hassell and twist it to some dark designs. "Lord Have Mercy" keeps the dread up, using choral tones to offset the onset of heavy, heavy bass. "Repose" finishes the set with some lighter ambient electronics marked out with crunchy percussion echoing in the dense but harmonic fog.

Review: Re:st continues to be an incredible source of adventurous thinking beyond the structures of drum & bass, and this latest record from Ghost Warrior would be hard pressed to claim an obvious link to the genre. It's more of an experimental jazz offering, using hollowed out notes and whispers of instrumentation, and yet somewhere in the sampling-as-artform process it captures some of the mind-bending magic of Source Direct, Photek et al. Delicate and moody as hell, this is another realm of music opening up and it's one we hope we get to explore deeper on further releases.

Review: De Lichting member Human Space Machine makes his debut on Re.st with four uncompromising techno / broken beat fusions. Each cut writhing and exploring a different tempo and style but painting from the same palette, 'Zone' sets the technoid/D&B tone while 'Unmade' hurls us deep into the dubby abyss. Flip for more highly contrasting dynamics as 'Sigh' goes full-on ploughman 4x4 while 'Slo' lives up to its name in a deep and dreamy way. Get lost in the zone!

Review: Six tracks by Inhmost emerge, doing solid justice to the Swiss producer's latest addition to his vision in ambient and dub techno. His second LP for the Swiss label re:st, each track evokes the immersive motional 'scapes conjured in the artist's own mind, as he revisits old memories from a space of peace. 'The Feeling Of...' is the follow-up project to the artist's former project 'The Meaning Of...', coming as an example of the simpler, more tactile and less thought-out interpretations of the same spaces.

Minus 10 (5:16)
Rural Nightline (5:21)
Carried From Secret Seas (5:12)
Review: Re:st regular Lcp has so far proven to be a producer with many musical talents, offering up a string of releases that flit between ambient, techno, IDM and off-kilter dancefloor moves. "Carried From Secret Seas" marks the producer's first solo EP for two years and sees him combine club-ready rhythms with evocative ambient chords and far-sighted, intergalactic electronics. The most robust of the three tracks is "Rural Nightline", a heavy, stripped-back and effects laden drum workout that's as creepy and clandestine as it is tough and intense. The other two cuts, "Minus 10" and "Carried From Secret Seas", are both far more dreamy and positive in tone, with Lcp wrapping ambient textures and soft focus melodies around deep broken techno beats.

About The Beauty Of Gold Among Ruins (5:14)
Review: Nekyia (previously of Neurosplit) last appeared in November 2018 on a standout VA for Ruffhouse & Gremlinz's UVB-76. Now they're back with a solo outing on RE:ST that offers some thrillingly dark and deep bass music. "White Sky, Nicotine Lips" is a superbly heavyweight rhythm built on lurching loops that pin you to the floor, "Killing Daylight" is even more empty and unsettling, like prowling a desolate urban landscape. Flipside "Vurrgh" gets busy with minimal drum programming and layers of static and industrial hum and hiss that bring a real sense of paranoia. "About The Beauty Of Gold Among Ruins" closes out with bleak and smoky warehouse techno that hypnotises you in no time. Vital stuff.

Phrex - "Drumworks"
Cutkachi - "Moonlight"
Review: Swiss city Berne may not be the first mainland European city you think of when someone throws the question "Name a hotspot for experimental bass music?" at you, but the city's newly established RE:ST label aim to change that. Founded by some of the people responsible for bringing the best of Bass music to Berne, the debut RE:ST release offers a platform for local talent Phrex and Cutkachi to shine and they certainly do, manning a side each and bringing their own distinct takes on club music between the 128-140 BPM range. Phrex leads the way with a killer exercise in fx laden sub heavy polyrhythms that wouldn't sound out of place on Deep Medi. The B Side veers into the grey zone between bass music and techno as Cutkachi flexes his 4/4 muscles with the stuttering late night deepness of "Moonlight".

The Untold Story (3:49)
Review: Jazzsticks and Blendits affiliate/Konfront Audio member Simstah makes his debut on a label from his own hometown Bern with "A Lost Path". One of his most comprehensive solo EPs, it showcases his deepest, most contemplative tendencies as we're soothed by stripped back arrangement and organic textures that get deeper the further we explore the path. "Oblivious" opens with some deep jungle science and heavy atmospheres before "2020" takes us on a dark, tribal halftime roll. Meanwhile on the B, "A Lost Path" is a mournful reflective piece that nods at the work of Asa, Sorrow or Phaeleh before "The Untold Story" closes the show with piano-tickling ambience. Time to get lost.

Review: UK deepsmith Synkro links with Romanian kindred spirit Dyl for this very special four-tracker on Swiss label Re.st. Every bit as immersive and emotive as you'd expect from such a meeting of minds, all laced together with strong elements of dub and ambient textures, 'Voices' ushers into the duo's unique cosmos before we float through a series of beats and atmospheres. The dubby hypnosis of 'Faded', the gentle echoes and pulses and twinkling arpeggios of 'On The Run' and the graceful, dusky hues of the finale 'Empty Faces'. Limited to 150 copies, blink and you'll miss this.

Mirmir's Well (Dowsing) (2:44)
Review: Adam O'Hara's surreal ambient-drone debut 'Eyes Open' was a cerebral, yet relaxing experience, though on his latest EP, the drone influences take more of a spotlight. On the opening track 'Hearing the Scent of the Colour Red' and on the title track, incorporating gentle rhythmic percussion and other spliced samples to conjure an almost alien experience. The journey climaxes on 'I Am Your Geometry' where a mixture of glitched noise and increasing cicada sound produces an atmosphere of extraterrestrial unease, not unlike the feelings conjured by the paintings of Alex Grey, from which the EP was named after. The 1995 oil painting shows a surreal tunnel of eyes, looking passively up towards a warm light. Collective Vision is a textural dive into exploration of the unknown, is a thought-provoking listen and is well deserving as a unique collectors piece.
