Review: Colin McBean seems to respond to personal loss in the most positive way. In 2012, he reacted to the death of close friend by writing his second full-length, State of Flux. When his father passed away earlier this year, he did the same, recording Personal Momentz, his third album, in 10 days. While still dancefloor-focused - think heavy, hypnotic rhythms and the unmistakable swagger of his particular brand of loop techno - Personal Momentz is perhaps a little more introspective than previous albums. There's a touch of sadness to cuts like "Life Riddimz (The Conversation)", the organ-laced, retro-futurist G-house of "Lot To Say", the Aaron Carl style Detroit techno of "Dark Heart" and "Angels Ascending", arguably one of McBean's most poignant and heart-aching productions to date.

Song For My Forefathers (4:43)
Review: After last year's killer Record Store Day edition featuring the Relative affiliated Vinalog, UK techno legend Colin McBean aka Mr G flies solo on this year's special installment with this wicked four tracker on his esteemed Phoenix G imprint. RSD 2020 features the soulful vocals and breakbeat action of 'Bands Tight' (4 Henry) and the moody, heads-down stomper that is 'Stinger 2' on the A side, followed by the loose and low-slung after hours vibe of 'The DJ' on the flip, and ending with the evocative and atmospheric slow burner 'Song For My Forefathers'.

P Bar Jam
Tripped Out
End Of Day Jam
Review: Colin McBean is back on the case with yet more of his refined house reductions, whipping up a trio of high grade deep house considerations with all the elements you want from a Mr G record. "P Bar Jam" makes no bones about its inspiration, stamping out an energetic but utterly streamlined kind of club track that makes the most of a catchy chord line without ever pushing too hard, the drums dutifully ticking along, the sub bass wobbling underneath but everything in perfect harmony. It's the same on "Tripped Out", albeit in the context of a more introspective jam that would fare better away from the peak time glare. "End Of Day Jam" too speaks to a more mellow situation, in this case letting some sweet organ notes warm the cockles over a delicate but purposeful groove.

You Feel Mi? (7:40)
Next (6:54)
Peace V3 (6:11)
Did You Know? (7:29)
Review: Everyone loves UK legend Mr G, and for good reason. He is not only a down to earth and endlessly positive character, but also a music making machine. He turns out tunes like it ain't no thang. For this one he is on his own Phoenix G label and gets you sweaty from the off with the humid chords and gospel cries of 'You Feel Mi' over one of his trademark rock solid beats. 'Next' is another dense arrangement that bristles and boils with fuzzy texture, bold bass and knackered chords. 'Peace' offers a little more room to breath with it suspended chords, and 'Did You Know?' slowly layers up samples and melodic sequences into a tune that fills you suspense.

Full A Love (Mango Boy On A Vibe) (2:20)
U Feel Mi (Kai Alce's New Feel) (5:28)
Full A Love (Mango Boy Refix) (6:08)
Review: Mr. G continues to be a bastion of the greatest deep house emanating out of the UK, and that practice extends to the artists he chooses to roll with. On this latest 12" on Phoenix G, he's reaching out to various characters for remixes which dial up the soul and don't necessarily play it safe for the floor. Kai Alce's 'New Feel' of 'U Feel Mi' is a gorgeous bath of sprightly Rhodes and sax flex, but it's more concerned with jazziness than simple riffs to keep a crowd pumped, even if there's a sharp beat underneath. Mango Boy takes two very different runs at 'Full A Love', with the 'On A Vibe' version especially impressing with its beatless rhythm mantras for the DJs who like to tease.

Learn 2 Love (5:33)
Untitled 8 (6:05)
Tears Of Joy (7:58)
Stinky (3:49)
Review: Mr G is a real badman. The UK great always goes in hard with this sets and tunes - they're smoky, grainy grooves that lock you in deep for hours on end. For this year's Record Store Day he serves up a third volume of unreleased gold from his vaults. This one kicks off with a heavy sample from 'I Need A Freak' reworked into a late night and trippy tech house framework. 'Untitled 8' ups the ante with punchy and gritty techno loops, 'Tears Of Joy' then twists in some acid and last of all is the best fo the lot. It is tantalisingly short at under four minutes but is a body-shaking broken beat rhythm with heavy bass that makes you move your body right from the off.

L's G (6:54)
Review: Few artists are as reliable as MR G, who also happens to be a super nice dude and a positive presence in anyone's life - just follow him online and you'll see. The long-time underground stalwart releases a ton of music on a ton of labels - but here on his own Phoenix G he serves up a healthy dose of unreleased dubplates. As always they are rooted in deep house with heavy, firmly rooted and rolling drums, grainy pads and just the right amount of girt and grime to keep you locked in and zoned out. Another essential 12" in a career full of them.

Doin' Nothin' EP

Techno
Been A Minute
It's Time
Got My Groove On
Sing It Loud
Review: While no two Mr G EPs sound the same, the veteran producer definitely has a trademark sound. That style - heavy, rough, stripped-back, smoky and fearlessly dancefloor focused - is naturally evident on his latest four-tracker for the Phoenix G label he founded a few years back as a vehicle for his productions. The Doin' Nothin' EP is pleasingly forthright and fiendishly heavy, with plenty of nods to his stomping techno past (he was, back in the 1990s, a member of heavy techno duo The Advent). For proof, check the throbbing, warehouse-ready nastiness of 'Sing It Loud', the razor-sharp intensity of 'Got My Groove On', where pulsating alien-sounding bass and jacking machine drums catch the ear, and the deep techno hypnotism of 'Been a Minute'.

Drop It (Mango Boys remix) (7:35)
Nangs (4:16)
Drop It (Duncan Forbes Drawing On Grace remix) (7:17)
Drop It (G reprise) (3:35)
Review: Mr G is presumably called Mr G because he is such a G. For seemingly ever now he has been turning out his smoky, stripped back and economical basement house joints, coated in dirty, lo-fi pads and grime. They are rollers that lock you in and keep you there and no matter how many times we hear new ones from him, the effects are always powerful. Here we get two more on his own label - the humid 'Drop It' and more raw and urgent 'Nangs', then comes a Drawing On Grace remix of 'Drop It' from Mr G's regular team up mate Duncan Forbes that pumps a little more of a funky drum pattern and a G Reprise that allows some light into the mix.

Curry Nite (9:26)
Curry Nite (G's Reflecting dub) (10:04)
Review: Mr G remains a popular figure in the tech house underground. He is boss of this label and a hugely prolific producer who continues to turn out top quietly tunes at a high rate of knots. This latest outing is a collab with Duncan. 'Curry Nite' rolls on a typically smoky basement house vibes with dub drums perfect sat in the fat bass. Swirling pads up top add scale and spoken words bring the pensive element. On the flip, G then remixes his own tune into a more stripped back and smooth roller for those late night hours. Class as always from this real G.

What's That Sound
Cat: PGSP 3. Rel: 25 Jan 24

Minimal/Tech House
What's That Sound V1 (7:39)
What's That Sound V3 (7:57)
Review: Phoenix G is of course an alias for the universally claimed rightfully adored Mr G, one of the UK's most long-serving and accomplished underground servants. His views on the game (which you can find on his Instagram) are as worth hearing as his music which this time takes him to his own self-titled label once more. As always it is deep, raw, emotive stuff that stays low but is high on emotion, however subtle. 'What's That Sound V1' is a dubbed-out and grainy basement track with scruffy drums and shards of light breaking through a broken window, then V3 of the same cut has a little more synth detail. Superb.
