Fiori (original mix)

Review: Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann are Ame. Anyone whose heart is beating for deep house, Detroit techno and soulful dance music in general could hardly avoid the records of the Karlsruhe based DJ/producer duo, even more so after their 2005 uber hit "Rej". "Fiori" is minimalism in the vein of Philip Glass that morphs into a majestic seventies psychedelic sound. The club edit has turned out to be much more DJ friendly with its compact length. With its streamlined arrangement and percussion and beats adjusted to the demand, "Fiori" hasn't lost any of its stupefying magic. A top Ostgut Ton release.

Review: Code sees Patrick Graser issue his debut album as Answer Code Request with the twelve track set comfortably ranking among the best long players issued on Ostgut Ton in recent times. Though Graser has been releasing records under his given name since 2008, it's his work as Answer Code Request that has seen the German truly find his sound. First appearing under the moniker in 2011 with the self-released Subway Into EP, Graser has gone on to release with MDR and Ostgut Ton with the Breath EP issued on the latter earlier this year a fine taste for what to expect from Code. ACR's weighty breakbeat driven techno is very much in evidence here, at times it feels like how Hessle lad Joe might sound if he grew up in the outskirts of Berlin ("Field Depth" in particular). At other times Graser's suggestion that Code is influenced by the 90s sounds of UK bastions such as Warp feel very much true and the more you listen the more you feel he's successfully managed to deliver a cohesive and continually compelling techno album.

Breathe
Review: The brilliant Answer Code Request follows releases for his own imprint and Marcel Dettmann's MDR label to make his Ostgut Ton debut with the Breathe EP, which delivers three cuts of his individual brand of weighty, breakbeat-inspired techno. Each of the three tracks sees him in particularly ravey form; "The 4th Verdict" combines a chugging synth line with minimal Mills-inspired percussion, while "Ghostes" offers a suitably spectral vision of club techno in its cavernous chords and heavy breakbeat rhythms. The title track however must be his most euphoric to date combining headspinning chords with taut drums.

Review: Alongside regular studio partner Andreas Baumecker, Sam Barker has released a swathe of admired singles and a couple of on-point albums on Ostgut Ton. Here he returns to the much-loved German imprint with his most significant solo release to date: a debut album of drowsy, sun-baked electronic positivity that expertly melds elements of hazy ambient, dub techno, off-kilter electronica and the classic kosmiche synthesizer soundscapes associated with Tangerine Dream. It's a lot less dancefloor-focused than much of his previous material, but that's not a criticism: indeed, the fact that it's warm, opaque and prioritizes fuzzy, slowly shifting musical movements is the album's greatest strength.

Review: Ostgut Ton staple Sam Barker returns with the second edition on his eponymous sub label, featuring another intriguing collection of leftfield electronics. Opening epic 'E7-E5' is an utterly majestic and blissful affair that exists sonically at the intersection of dub techno and Motor City soulfulness, but next offering 'Bent' goes south of Heaven and into darkly dystopic realms for this off-kilter deconstruction of electro aesthetics. Over on the flip, we have the glassy-eyed IDM of 'Polytely' taking you on a glorious nine minute brain dance. Mastered by Stefan Betke at Scape Mastering.

Review: The debut album from Barker & Baumecker has been a long time in the making, but its timing couldn't be better. With techno at a point of divergence, as producers like Untold and Blawan make the move from the UK end of the bass spectrum into straighter 4/4 fare, Transsektoral seems to offer a Berlin perspective on the same theme. Although the stark, often dramatic atmosphere is that of an Ostgut Ton record through and through, the whole thing is peppered with broken rhythms and lurching bass (see "Crows"), and even some inventive R&B sampling reminiscent of the Tri Angle family. Of course it also makes its concessions to the Berghain purists with the spluttering, acid toothed techno of "Trafo" and "Silo", or the relentless "Buttcracker" but all things considered, this is one of the most vital albums Ostgut Ton have released since The Traveller - which is high praise indeed.

Review: Since 2010, Germany's Barker & Baumecker have been a solid, reassuring presence in the Ostgut Ton roster; the two producers invariably deliver the goods, whether it's militant techno or more mischievous strains of broken bass music. Their last LP, 2012's Transsektoral, was an ice-cold techno excursion, but this time they seem to be in a more expansive state of mind with this new album, Turns, a voyage across desolate ambient plains and symphonic dance floor experiments. The two openers, "Senden" and "Encipher" are the perfect entrance to an eerie world of molecular sonics, a sound which evolves further into the more beat-laden "Decipher", and the mechanical beats of "Club Entropicana". "Technogate" is a beatless blend of field recordings and echoing harmonies, while "Turnhalle" bounces away at a more uplifting tempo, "Nocturnal" chucks some breaks into the techno mix, and "Statik" ties things off with a sleek, polished 4/4 finish that is testament to the variety of styles that these two are capable of delivering.

Anthony Parasole - "Heartbeat" (5:19)
Review: The Ostgut Ton Zehn 12" series continues apace and lands on edition Sechs, which packs a triple trouble punch from Messrs Barker & Baumecker, Atom TM and Anthony MF Parasole! Responsible for one of our favourite Ostgut artist albums, Sam Barker and Andy Baumecker kick things off with their first original production in some time and the brittle, unpredictable hardcore manifestation "Love Is A Battlefield" has us hoping the pair will return with something more substantial soon. Ten minutes of ethereal techno at it's finest! On the flip, Atom TM takes it down a stripped back and dubby route with "Stromlinien" whilst The Corner don Parasole lays waste to the dancefloor with the reverberant elasticity of "Heartbeat".

Mark Broom - "Vault 5"
Birds Two Cage - "Gase"
Patrick Graser - "From Foreign Territories"
Review: This sampler from Norman Nodge's new mix CD shows that the Berghain resident spends a lot of time searching out music that no one else has. The upshot of his approach is that Nodge creates a mood like no one else. From the mix opener, the gray-scale ambience of Birds Two Cage's "Gase", through the menacing builds of Mark Broom's "Vault 5" to newcomer Patrick Graser's "From Foreign Territories" - an insistent, bleep-heavy groove to rival Sleeparchive at his most austere - this taster release proves that when it comes to setting a menacing, spooky tone, no one can match Nodge.

Under
Review: Born in Berlin, raised Frankfurt, Brtschitsch, who also produces and runs the label Taksi with Andre Galluzzi, has just decided to move back to his old home town. These two tracks here clearly show themselves influenced by Brtschitsch's visits to Berghin/Panorama bar, where Paul, as he puts it in his own words, was finally able to quench his thirst for inspiration again: I see, "'Twirl' as a perfect soundtrack to the moment, when the shutters open up at Panorama bar and daylight floods the room. 'Under' on the other hand is a deep and atmospheric track trying to underline the vastness and large scale of the Berghain." Of course this doesn't mean both tracks couldn't work the other way around or at any other place: "Twirl" and "Under" are universal and useful scorchers fusing a certain summery, trancey fleet-footedness with the right amount of dancefloor punch making this EP a strong aspirant for the perfect open air record 2006.

Steve Bicknell - "Odyssey #2" (4:12)
Review: It seems Function is a fan of Cassegrain & Tin man material as he's just signed them up for his next release on Infrastructure New York. For this second Berghain 07 sampler, Function's appetite for boomy, acid techno is whetted by the collaboration's "Oxide". Meanwhile, former flatmate Ed Davenport, aka Inland, delivers "Sca Fell", a subaqueous workout that would get the Mike Parker seal of approval. DVS1 throws down some trademark warehouse beats with some caustic stabs to boot, while Steve Bicknell delves even deeper into the abyss than he did on the first sampler, with a track that's as menacing and frenetic as what Drexciya can be.

Review: Marcel Dettmann drops one of the most anticipated albums of 2010, with his eponymous debut on Ostgut Ton. And it's everything you'd hope for (and expect) from a Berghain resident: dark, cavernous, atmospheric - utterly brilliant. The highlights are numerous, from the thunderous, atmospheric electrical storm that is "Argon" to the Basic Channel-esque hiss and crackle of "Drawing" and the looped percussion on "Reticie" that sounds like Dettmann has been dragging a bag of marbles around one of the unused rooms at Berghain. Review: Marcel Dettmann returns with yet another EP full of dusty atmospherics and brooding minimalism. The dark synth line of "Range" wallows around sketchy percussion and filtered pulsations while the density of "Islo" ups the energy in a hectic mess of Dadub-esque drum patterns. Machine gun snares strafe the Berghain-y kicks of "Push" as otherworldly vocals breath pitched down variations of the track's title. "Allies" is Dettmann's take on party techno, but tailored entirely for flinty concretions and sturdy pylons - an absolute Berghain classic.

It's their first combined release since 2013. Both slabs of wax are full of high quality, atmospheric, late night techno workouts, from the creepy riffs and off-kilter drums of "Phantom Studies", and the horror-influenced post-dubstep shuffle of "The Room", to the raging, mind-altering dancefloor heaviness of "Bay Boy" and sparse, minimalist techno closer "The Tenant". Given their abilities as producers, we'd expect nothing less than superbly produced, club-ready cuts. Predictably, Phantom Studies delivers that in spades.

Dawning (revisited)
Review: After having launched Ostgut Ton's vinyl division with the superb 'Dawning/Dead Man Watches The Clock' (O-Ton01) and their own labels MDR and Klockworks, Marcel Dettmann, who in the meantime also did remixes for Rekids and Bpitch Control and contributed a track to Sven Väth's 'Cocoon Compilation G', and Ben Klock join forces again after their solo efforts on O-Ton03 and O-Ton05. The 'Scenario EP' is a double 12" containing four brand new tracks as well as a rework of their hit 'Dawning'. The tracks have all been conceived at the Berghain club, where Marcel and Ben tested earlier versions in order to optimise them in their studio. The duo showcases a palette of styles ranging from raw tools to rather musical compositions. 'Scenario' clearly stands at the center of this release, with drums dry as a bone, metallic, scratching percussion and concisely placed effects turning this into something not only diehard Plastikman or Sähkö fans should be able to enjoy. 'Blank Scenario', the other side of the coin, is an even more reduced workout of 'Scenario', giving the DJ a lot of freedom to use this track. 'Renumber' is another stoic little techno beast with a heavy bass representing the state-of-the-art at Berlin's school of Hardwax. 'Places Like This' has never been meant for a release as it was a private tool both Ben and Marcel used for their DJ sets, but as its shuffling chords led to euphoric crowd reactions it soon became clear it had to find its way onto this EP. Last but not least, Dettmann/Klock revisit their first collective effort. 'Dawning (Revisited)' highlighting their more harmonic side and reviving the track in a very convincing way. This package definitely makes for a strong double 12", showing it's possible to do original, yet traditional techno in 2007.

Dinky's warm tech house sound is underpinned by intricate rhythms and harmonies, a much loved trait she has made into her own. Review: The latest edition of Berghain's own series comes from a number of talented veterans who all have something different to say about house and techno. That, in itself, is something to appreciate these days. Electric Indigo, whose been balling with the likes of Berlin's DJ Hell since the early 00's, launches a cautious, minimalistic techno experimenting through "Registers", followed by Stefan Rein's bleepy techno tool "Panther" - the sort of bomb you'd expect to hear in the pit at about 4am on a Sunday morning. The B-side features Macro's and Don't Be Afraid's RRoxymore, with "Tropicalcore", a comparatively more sparse and kinetic rhythm track that replaces the drones and pads in favour of ritualistic dance elements in the form of drums; Boris & Fiedel's "Div'hain" closes the eighth chapter of the series with a driving, menacing blur of 4/4 drums and gently acidic bass waves. Excellent.

Review: Len Faki is no stranger to Ostgut Ton having mixed the label's third and possibly hardest sounding Berghain CD back in 2009. Whilst the Berlin fixture has remained resolutely busy since then, Faki has remained absent from the OSTGUT catalogue numbers. Until now that is as the Basement Trax Vol 1 12" signals Faki's return to Ostgut colours in impressive and diverse fashion. Lead track "Btx1" is dominated by the heavily processed treatment of some orgasmic sounding female vocals which are submerged deep in the mix and smeared greedily across the channels chased by whip cracking percussion. The flipside accompaniment "Btx2" is a tougher version with the tribalistic percussion gradually consumed by the vastness of Faki's string arrangements and the final version "Btx3" sees Faki present a swirling mass of ambient calm. How good would it be to hear this at 2pm on a Sunday in Berghain?

Review: There are two defining aspects to Marcel Fengler; firstly he retains a more humble profile to his more celebrated fellow Berghain residents Klock and Dettmann, and secondly original material from Fengler may be an infrequent proposition, but it's almost always worthy of your attention. This latter aspect is certainly true of the three track Frantic EP, a worthy return to Ostgut Ton, following last year's Berghain O5 mix and a clutch of notable EPs. Commencing with the title track, Fengler draws on a canny complement of insistent loops and sumptuous synth arrangements, while the rugged drum patterns make "Frantic" seem all too appropriate a title. Flip over for the alien techno funk of "6 In A Row", a track which masterfully swings between the thick groove and fast fingered smears of neon synths, while the glistening beauty of "Mosaique" offers some nice contrast to the previous onslaught.

Enigma
Review: For whatever reason, Marcel Fengler does not yet enjoy the same international profile as his Berghain colleagues Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann. Hopefully, Enigma will help to change that situation, with Fengler showing diversity that his more purist peers lack. This is evident on "Rapture", where an insistent techno rhythm leans towards the loopy approach of the late 90s/early 00s. "Razkaz" is the most typically Ostgut track on Enigma, a dense, repetitive track based on granite beats and steel girder percussion, but woven between these somewhat austere elements is a playful ethno sample. The EP's title track delivers what we think is Fengler's finest moment to date: "Enigma" snakes and pulses fluidly with nods to electronic disco, but the eerie strings and those typically dense percussive drums give it the requisite dance floor rigidity. Caught somewhere between human spontaneity and machine-led precision, Marcel Fengler's latest release proves itself to be enigma wrapped up in a techno riddle.

Offering a more well rounded and experimental display of Fengler's production palette than the functional techno he's issued in 12" format, Fokus has a definite highlight thus far and it's interesting to see who has been chosen to rework tracks from it. Shed and Dave Clarke are naturally the headline draws here and their respective takes on "Jaz" and "Sky Pushing" are as full throttle as one would expect but it's nice to see Solar One boss Robert Witschakowski get the exposure his work as The Exaltics deserves with a killer throbbing Italo-techno rendition of "King Of Psi".

Review: Berghain resident Marcel Fengler has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with the club's label Ostgut Ton, putting out his first 12" on the imprint - the shuffling carnival techno of "Playground" - way back in 2007. Despite this pedigree, Fokus is his debut album. It is, in many ways, like an extended love letter to electronic music, and techno in particular. Across the album's 11 tracks, Fengler turns his hand to atmospheric ambience ("Distant Episode", "High Falls", the dreamy "Break Through" and Pete Namlook-ish "Liquid Torso"), eyes-wide-shut Detroitisms (the pleasingly melodic "Jaz"), basement-bothering early morning fare (the paranoid "Sky Pushing") and, of course, balls-out techno wonkiness ("Dejavu" and the impressively robust "The Stampede").

Beneath The Skin (6:21)
Trace To Nowhere (5:51)
Devil May Care (5:38)
Immersion (6:40)
Review: In a DJ and production career approaching two decades, Terence Fixmer's music has appeared on some real bastions of European techno - International Deejay Gigolo, Speedy J's Electric Deluxe, Prologue, CLR and Jealous God being just five. Last year saw Ostgut Ton added to that list, with the label giving the Belgian's iconic 2003 production "Aktion Mekanik Theme" a pleasantly-surprising reissue augmented by some high profile remixes (Nodge, Dettmann, Kobosil). Beneath The Skin adds further steel to that relationship and is a fine Ostgut debut for Fixmer, with the title track a devious muscle rippler of a modern EBM/techno hybrid DJ tool. Wait for those sirens to come in! "Trace To Nowhere" pairs up breathing vocals with alien-like acid squeaks over a stripped back techno patter whilst "Devil May Care" takes the lysergy into more foreboding territory. The tension eases as "Immersion" closes out the 12" on a more ambient techno tip.

Review: Heavyweight techno servings from the tip of the top, the undisputed king of contemporary techno sounds; Berlin's Ostgut Ton. This latest head-banger of an EP comes from Terrence Fixmer and a fine - and irritatingly apt - collection of remixers to mould his classic "Aktion Mekanik Theme" track into different shapes. First up is Kobosil's 44 version, a ringing and twisted face-melter with enough siren action to blow your speakers out and catapult you into next week. On the flip, we have Norman Nodge's more bleeped-out NN take, while Marcel Dettman's own Leitmotiv version slithers its way across the arrangement without any concrete kick drum or percussion, opting instead for the totally abstract and noise-ridden drones.

Review: It seems incredible to think that despite his nearly 20 years of prodcution experience, Dave Sumner hasn't released a full Function album until this year. Thankfully Incubation proves it's been well worth the wait with the Sandwell District member really stretching his legs out for one of those techno albums that is most definitely an album experience. This nine track set bristles with great ideas and murky atmospherics, combining dystopian sci-fi soundtrack textures with the precision techno he's become known for. There are robust dancefloor tracks - see the murky acid techno of "Against The Wall" and sweaty "Modifier" - but also moments of intense, melodic beauty, from the crystalline bliss of "Counterpoint", to the dreamy hypnotism of "Inter (album version)".

Incubation (Ritual) (Recondite remix)
Inter (NSI remix)
Review: Dave Sumner's debut album as Function was one of this year's most anticipated and finest LPs. Atypically, this remix package sees the commissioned producers deliver versions that measure up to the original material. On the dance floor end, there's Rrose's punishing take on "Against The Wall", which starts with a hypnotic, linear rhythm that descends into distorted mayhem, while Recondite's version of "Incubation" marries dramatic filters and insistent bleeps to reach a climax. But when the remixers go as deep as the author, the results are truly fascinating. NSI's take on "Inter" is a sprawling, jazzed out interpretation of the original ambient track, while Vatican Shadow delivers an uncharacteristically melodic, acid-tinged version of "Psychic Warfare".

Mauersegler
Review: Berlin’s Berghain / Panoramabar is now one of, if not the most infamous club in the world. Although spending the entire of this review discussing the club would not even begin to scratch the surface of its impact on clubbing culture, this release is about its label offshoot, Ostgut Ton. Andre Galluzi (one of the club’s residents) set the imprint on its way in 2005 with his pivotal, dark and edgy Berghain 01 compilation. Five years later, the German returns to the label for the first time to deliver a two tracker of cutting edge, percussive techno. Joined by close colleague, Dana Ruh, the pair dive deep into dizzyingly hypnotic territories to bring a slice of the notorious club’s dancefloor to record. Dana, who runs the Broquade platform, highly respected for exploring elegant sound inclinations, is already poised for further collaborations with Galluzzi.

The title track is an understated cut whose attitude and personality lies within the strength of insistent drum patterns, long rolling arrangements and its straight forward approach to the task at hand. Flourishing relentlessly forward, fluttering, tribal-like vocal utterances smear the top layer of sound, adding to the exotic and mysterious vibe. On the flip, "Mauersegler" continues the highly percussive journey but delves deeper into wild terrain, carving itself out a much more urgent path. Tripping delay effects and soft voice manipulations drag the listener further down into this undulating slice of next wave minimalism. Lost in a spinning world of drums and deep grooves, spell-bound listeners are reminded once more what Galluzi, and his resident Berlin club for that matter, can do to even the most fortified minds.

Swivel Flick
Review: Nick Hoppner is one of the key figures in the Ostgut operation, but isn't noted for putting out a lot of music. Clearly favouring quality over an excessive release schedule, the former My My member draws on the classic sounds of house and techno for Peck. The title track is the more current-sounding, its heavy drum shuffled accompanied by weighty claps , a soft-focus filter and a lost 'aaaah' vocal sample. "She Parked Herself " is a totally different proposition; featuring the kind of emotional strings that featured on classic progressive house records by artists like Jaco and Slam, its plunging bassline and rattling snares sound like the deep house of 90s producers like Jamie Read. "Swivel Flick" meanwhile is less derivative but also makes a play of that era's propensity for atmospheric pads and resonating bass riffs. Excellent stuff.

Review: The last time we heard from Nick Hoppner, he was collaborating with Japanese veteran Gonno. Here he returns to Ostgut Ton with his first solo EP since the release of the Folk album in 2015. He begins with A-side "Box Drop", a typically Berlin-style techno shuffler full of dubbed-out riffs, relentless cymbal hits and subtle melodic variations. It's muscular and full-throttle, but with enough wavy elements to work at home as well as in the club. On the flip you'll find the Motor City positivity of "Still" - all life-affirming melody lines, colourful chords and gentle acid lines - and the grandiose, soundscape techno thrills of the equally melodious "Out of Sight".

Review: Earlier this year, Nick Hoppner stepped down from his role as Ostgut Ton label manager, handing the reins to Jenus Baumecker without a hint of self importance or grand standing. The reasoning behind this decision was apparently so Hoppner could dedicate more time to creative pursuits and this has delivered some swift results in the form of Red Hook Soil, a three track 12" for the label he no longer oversees. The release is Hoppner's first for Ostgut since 2011, though he's been active in the interim period gracing Kompakt Extra and Echochord with aplomb. All three tracks on the Red Hook Soil see Hoppner in a four-four mood, with the title track venturing into uplifting, and in parts, melancholic fields of production that share a similar, only more textured feel to 2010?s "Brush Me Down" from the EP of the same name. The B-side is met with strains of Italo on the verging-on-epic "Bait & Tackle", though Hoppner does move into tougher techno territory with a dryer and regimented track in "Decal".

Review: Nobody could accuse Spanish producer JASSS of being backwards and coming forwards on this, her Ostgut Ton debut. The Berlin-based label, Berghain's recorded outlet, usually conjures sonic images in line with the stereotypical soundtrack of the club's main hall, but anyone who has spent a reasonable amount of time in the imprint's back catalogue will know that's a reductive assumption. The crew regularly veer into all kinds of leftfield electronic avenues.

Even so, JASSS' arrival marks one of the wildest rides this platform has ever offered listeners. From the resoundingly emotional and joyous opening wide bands of synth, 'Birds You Can Name', to the euphoric industrialism of 'Busto' and the operatic, neo-tropical pop of 'A World of Service', this is benchmark-setting curveball stuff we cannot get enough of.

Review: Although arguably best known for her angular, industrial-influenced techno output, Siliva Jimenez Alvarez AKA Jasss has proved adept at delivering oddball electronica, modular-rich ambient and the kind of scuzzy industrial pop of which Trent Reznor would undoubtedly prove. A World of Service, her sophomore album and first for Ostgut Ton, builds on the latter side of her sound while expanding into new musical territory such as autotune-sporting future R&B ('Luis'), buzzing downtempo darkness (the immersive and intoxicating, percussion-rich 'Busto'), leftfield 21st century synth-pop (the curious but excellent 'A World Of Service') and even a dash of jangling, radio-friendly cheeriness ('In Your Mouth'). An impossible album to pigeonhole, but one that's consistently excellent and genuinely worthy of further inspection.

Static Test
Compression Session 2
Review: Long associated with the harder side of techno - on the evidence of his recent mix and pretty much any of his longer club sets, unfairly so - this release sees Berghain Ben Klock attempt to show a more musical flavour. The first version of the title track sees airy, spacey Detroit chords copper-fastened to a typically dense Klock drum pattern, with both seemingly disparate elements acting in unison to create a climax that's as epic as Berghain's Gotham City architecture. A similar approach applies on the second version: it features the same snappy drums and crackling percussion underpinning Klock's previously undocumented lush leanings, but despite this, it would be wrong to assume that it's merely a continuation of the first version. Tellingly, there are also dark, droning tones and hints of the ruthlessly utilitarian approach of his colleague, Marcel Dettmann - and these nuances are also audible on the third and final track, "Static Test". Although there is a building chord sequence, it sounds like a distraction to the main event - a rolling, functional techno rhythm, powered by whiplash percussion and an underlying hint of menace. Top release.

Review: "Czeslawa" is a track Ben Klock tailor made for his sets at Berghain. As he says, "I wanted to have another hypnotic track for my sets which is not too much arranged". The track is a beast, slightly infused with acid, subtly grilling the dancefloor in a way you won't forget too quickly. This is pure techno for the wee hours of the morning. The b-side, "Warszawa", is more playful. The arrangement oozes with high spirits and a swing the makes this track a sure contestant for the primetime. When the snappy strings set in, both rave veterans and novices will embrace each other blissfully.

Review: Berghain young gun Max Kobosil gives us his debut album. We Grow They Decline is surprisingly more restrained than you'd expect from Kobosil given his reputation as a DJ and of course those pretty fierce EPs he released previously on MDR and Unterton. Most tracks on here are slower, deeper and reflective takes on the techno sound and show a sense of maturity in this emerging talent's studio prowess. Highlights include the sombre and vertigo inducing slow-groove of "Reflection", the avant garde tribalism of "The Exploring Mountain" and the throbbing EBM crossover of "The Living Ritual".

Review: Berlin's Kobosil made his debut on the Ostgut Ton off-shoot, Unterton, back in 2013 and the 12" was received with mighty praise both within our headquarters, and from the techno community as a whole. After dropping some more bombs on Marcel Dettman's imprint and the RK label, respectively, the youngster has now earned a spot on Ostgut's main catalogue with the 91 EP - surely named after his year of birth. On the A-side, "Avernian" grumbles and punches its way through heavy kick drums and a sea of distortion, but "Athtar" ditches the beats and heads down the inevitable ambient-drone wormhole. Flip onto the B-side and you'll find the alien-like sounds of "Konvergent", alongside the more straight-laced slice-and-dice techno of "Per". Bring on the Kobosil album!

Review: All hail the return of Etapp Kyle. For over 10 years this ever-intriguing producer has been orbiting the Ostgut Ton axis, from Ben Klock's label to Unterton and lastly Ostgut Ton itself back in 2017. After some time away, Kyle is back with a new EP that was wholly worth the wait. "Nolove" is a dreamy, fractured slice of techno abstraction with insanely detailed production chops, while "Unseen" opens things up with some more forthright drums that move like a more linear take on the Shackleton sound. "Polar" thrums and pulses with sound design as much as beats, but the icy atmospheric swirls are the star of the show. "Eden" strips things back with a beautiful, plaintive electronica finisher that keeps percussion to a minimum and focuses on gossamer synth lines to melt away to.
