Review: Network continue their 30th Anniversary celebrations with an in demand re-issue of the first record they ever put out. Neal Howard was the man behind it and the Chicago artist hit gold with his soulful machine sounds. 'Indulge' (club House mix) sounds like a house version of the iconic Strings of Life, with the deep mix only slightly dials back the bumping beats and joyous chords. Bad Boy Bill then steps up with a mix of 'To Be Or Not To Be' with gurgling bass and computerised melodies that are bright and brilliant. The aforementioned Derrick May then mixes with his slick sense of hi tech soul present and correct.

Ahnonghay
Ahnonghay (translucent orange vinyl 12")
Cat: NWKT 22OR. Rel: 06 Oct 21
Techno
  1. Ahnonghay (Carl Craig remix) (7:25)
  2. Ahnonghay (Dave Clarke remix) (5:55)
  3. Ahnonghay (Kevin Saunderson original Reese mix) (7:04)
Review: Legendary 90s dance band Inner City had a brief stay at the Network label that produced some classic recordings. Here, three techno icons serve up their own contemporary interpretations, with Planet E boss Carl Craig going first. He flips 'Ahnonghay' into a steely, metallic, train track groove that hustles and bustles you into action without ever boiling over. UK Baron Dave Clarke gets much more physical, his frosted synths whipping about next to jacked up perc that is primed for peak time floors. Last of all, Inner City main man Kevin Saunderson draws things out deep, with steamy vocals and future soul colouring his work.

Made In Detroit (B-STOCK)
Cat: NEXUS 212 (B-STOCK). Rel: 05 Mar 20

Techno
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record slightly warped, also the record has very light surface marks, but otherwise in excellent working condition***

During their time as Nexus 21, Altern-8 pair Mark Archer and Chris Peat were given the opportunity to head to Detroit and record with some of their techno heroes, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May included. "Made In Detroit" presents these rare and significant recordings for the first time, offering a suite of tracks that fix UK-style bleep melodies (all the rage in late 1989/early 1990) to the kind of fizzing rhythms, warm bass and futuristic electronics then popular in the Motor City. There are two versions of house-tempo standout "Don't Do It Like That" (one with a whispered lead vocal by Ann Saunderson), while the clanking and metallic "Nexus" and more ghostly "No Statues" accurately fuse the best bits of both British and American techno at the time.

Progression Logical
Progression Logical (white vinyl 12")
Cat: NEXUS 213WHITE. Rel: 24 May 21
Techno
  1. Self Hypnosis (5:27)
  2. Mind Machines (5:49)
  3. Still Life (Carl Craig instrumental remix) (5:41)
Review: A bleep techno classic from '91 for all the proper heads out there. Nexus 21 was composed of legends Mark Archer & Mark Peat aka Altern8, and they had several releases under the project name between 1989 - 1997 - mainly on Birimingham's Network Records. Detroit's influence was abundant on the EP, from the deeply emotive hi-tech soul of 'Self Hypnosis' and 'Mind Machines', and of course The Motor City legend himself Carl Craig appearing for an absolutely incredible rework of 'Still Life' on the flip. This one captures the true zeitgeist of early techno, complete with Kevin Saunderson style chord stabs to boot - a must have!

  2. Strings Of Life (7:36)
  3. Beyond The Dance (6:59)
  4. Sinister (6:37)
  5. Wiggin (5:30)
  6. Nude Photo (5:56)
  7. Hand Over Hand (13:01)
Review: 2020 marks the 30th birthday of Network Records, a label that did arguably more than any other in the early 90s to champion both US and UK techno. As part of their celebrations they'll be reissuing some key singles and albums from their catalogue, starting with this 1991 compilation of key Derrick May productions. Now stretched across two slabs of wax rather than one to guarantee a louder cut, "Innovator" contains a wealth of vital early Motor City techno classics, from the acid-powered insanity of "Nude Photo" and the rushing, piano-heavy rush of "Strings of Life", to the thrilling sci-fi futurism of "Wiggin" and the deep techno warmth of "Hand Over Hand".

Take Me Back
Take Me Back (white vinyl 12")
Cat: NWKT 21. Rel: 02 Mar 21
Techno
  1. Take Me Back (2020 remix by Mark Gamble) (5:06)
  2. Take Me Back (1990 Bass-Heads mix) (4:07)
  3. Take Me Back (2020 remix TJ edit) (4:14)
  4. Demons (1990 Raw mix) (6:05)
  5. Frequency (1990 Depth mix extended) (4:33)
Review: Back to 1990! Crawford & Gamble's seminal ode to Detroit and Chicago on Network enjoys a timely reboot. With strong shades of the northern bleep sound deep in the mix, this foundation record still sounds every bit as exciting and raw as it did 30 years ago. Comes complete with the original Bass Head and Depth mixes, the original B-side 'Demons' (Raw Mix) plus a few updated edits from the team themselves as Gamble and TJ both add a little contemporary punch to the swooning, acid house anthem. Back to the future.
