55 Cancri E I (We Ran Away) (6:20)
55 Cancri E II (4:56)
Review: 55 Cancri E may be known as a distant exoplanet to some, while to others it is some truly beautiful and ethereal folk/nu-gaze business courtesy of Malmo via Berlin's Sara Hausenkamp.
She appears again on Denmark label Music For Dreams with her new release. The album is about the search for peace in the soul, a longing to find a home and a journey between planets Tellus and 55 Cancri E. Hausenkamp's seductive yet angelic voice soars above some endearing and transcendental arrangements. We particularly enjoyed the mellow country/blues flavour of "Att Lamna Tellus I (Oknen)" or the eerie and contemplative "Alltid Du" which indeed really showcases that amazing voice of hers.

Sail Among The Clouds (5:05)

Patches Of Light (4:51)
Port De Soller (4:28)
Review: Following his stunning "Southern Breeze" EP on Aficionado, the shadowy Vision Of Panorama lets loose with a sandy-toed Balearic opus on Music For Dreams. Stately shiny vibes throughout as we range from the slow-motion fretless bass bliss of "Reef" to the unabashed 80s synth boogie of "Patches Of Light" by way of the horizon-set yacht jam "Port De Soller". With a sprightly piano-laced twist on the title track by Jex Opolis thrown in for extra measure, Music For Dreams has delivered something particularly special right here.

Review: Having successfully teased us with "Calypso Beach" earlier this year, Phil Mison and Volmer's Ambala project levels up with their debut album. As you'd expect from all parties concerned, the whole set is brimming with Balearic bliss; the languid flamenco of "Last Swimmer", the soft focus slap bass house groove of "Distant Island", the fine balance of African folk and bluesy guitar struts of "Bambari", the Steve Miller style "Walk With The Dreamers"... These are just a handful of the 11 reasons why Volume One has perfect summer soundtrack potential. Both on and off the dancefloor.

RECOMMENDED
"Music for watching waves; music infused sharply with crushed ants and Eucalyptus; like climbing into one of those gaping holes in a big Mountain Ash that a possum has inhabited with a collection of mid-century synths." So says the official write up for Angophora's Together, the Australian duo's second LP that takes a lead from the first and then steps out on a path of its own. These are positive moods, made for good days with great people, and no drama.

It's the sound of the spectacular accommodation you stumbled upon after a sweaty trek through tropical landscapes, the perfect refuge at just the right time. While ambient is the technical term, this is more an adventure in multi-instrumentation. Acoustic guitars, pianos, soft percussion and swooning synths make up the majority of what's here, but rather than look to focus on 'a vibe', the tracks are very much whole in the traditional sense of structure.

Dish (vocal) (7:59)
Dish (dub) (6:53)
Review: Denmark's Music For Dreams have done exactly the right thing by signing Apiento & LX to their roster. The two produces haven't put out countless releases, but what they have produced has been much to our liking, and always present on the best independent labels out there. This new single from the duo, the ambiguously named "Dish", is the perfect hybrid, a tune that sits somewhere between house and electronica, but the mid-point is beautifully lo-fi in its approach, making this fall under the umbrella terms of 'balearic'. The vocals of the A-side are absolutely non-intrusive and, in fact, add to the charm and charisma of the harmonies locked tightly into this majestic tribal groove; you can imagine how perfectly lush the dub version sounds. This is a true tip, if we ever heard one!

Review: Music For Dreams label head Kenneth Badger was so inspired by the Tangerine Dream soundtrack to the classic Michael Mann film The Thief that he and Tolga Bo0.95yu0.95k from the Turkish band islandman decided to write their own soundtrack to an imaginary movie. They managed to write 10 tracks within 24 hours while imagining a film that told a story about two people stuck on the arctic ice cap where one tries to fool the other. Influences from Vangelis, John Carpenter, and Tangerine Dream all feature in what is a superb and escapist listen.

Review: Danish scene veteran and Music For Dreams overlord Kenneth Bager is undoubtedly one of the best Balearic DJs around. He has umpteen residencies on the White Isle, but it's his association with the beachside Jockey Club venue in Salinas that has become the most celebrated - thanks, in no small part, to his now annual, two-disc mix-ups. This year's edition - the sixth in total - is every bit as beguiling as its predecessors. It features a slowly shifting, soft-focus mixture of European new age favourites, sun-kissed jazz-pop, classic-sounding chill-out fare, slow motion disco, superb acoustic workouts, dub-wise electronica, contemporary dream house and spacey Balearic floor-fillers. Oh, and one of the tunes of 2018, Sophie Lloyd's gospel disco smasher "Calling Out".

Review: One of Denmark's key figures in electronic music and club culture since the 80s, Bager's been whittling the cosmic stick before many of us were out of short trousers. His collections and connections allow him to create and curate some seriously distinctive and unique mixes and collections. Case in point: his recent Sunset Sessions mix. Far too good to just live online, he's created a series of highly limited 12"s featuring numerous mix highlights. Part one includes the Mr Fingers style soul of Bell Tower's Pet Shop Boys tribute, the Gainsbourg-esque whispers of Mathieu Boogaerts and the deep dream samba of Bongo Ent. If you've heard the mix, you'll already know how beautiful these tracks are. Grab them while they're hot.

Review: Destination one of Ibiza's finest shores for MFD's fourth Sunset Series collection. As with the previous compendiums, the focus is squared purely on sonic equivalent of those idyllic balmy, hazy marmalade hues we long for during the colder months. Assuaging us from day to night, or simply straight to bed, real stand-out jams include Line Gottsche's sultry purrs on "Eyes",Christer Nahrendorf's sleazy jazz breaks on "Sju Minter Kvar" and the soft house thumps of Tuccinelli's "Can Picard" but that's really just the tip of the golden brown vista... Dig deep.

Review: Quiz any Balearic enthusiast, and they'll likely speak of Kenneth Bager in hushed tones. The Danish DJ/producer is famed for the quality of his selections, a facet that makes his occasional compilations essential listening. There's naturally plenty to admire on Balearic Biscuits Volume 2, from the sped-up African insanity of Bufiman's "Bassdrum Party", and Mehmet Aslan's fine rework of Kaprov Not Kaprov's "Mechanical Turk" (think Arabic synth melodies and rolling grooves), to the loved-up, hands-in the air brilliance of Tabu Ley Rochereau's "Hafi Deo", and Grooveman Spot's low-slung "Fork Power".

Down To The Sea & Back Vol 3: The Continuing Journey Of The Balearic Beat
Cat: ZZZCD 240. Rel: 31 May 24

Balearic/Downtempo
Review: After a 10-year hiatus, Balearic Mike and Kelvin Andrews return to continue the journey of the Balearic Beat with another edition of their distinguished Down To The Sea And Back compilation series, presenting a formidable new set of rare and obscure records. Once more sifting from the formidable crock of late 80s to intra-90s Balearic music, this eight-track LP begins on a serene note with the expertly layered guitars from Dagobert Bohm on their re-arrangement of Josete Ordonez, before moving into increasingly complex but still no less sunny waters from the likes of Vidderna, Lee Ryda, and Pressure Drop. A veritable three years' worth of digging, finally condensed into a single selection.

You'll find one of his edits tucked away towards the end of the EP - a tidy extension of Wolfsmond's sun-kissed, Chris Rea-esque German language number "Fuhl Dich Frei" - alongside stunning selections that variously touch on stoned West Coast jazz-rock, new age, ambient, drowsy 80s pop, kosmiche and loved-up late night AOR shufflers. Review: Be.Lanuit is bringing Ibiza back to its roots as a bohemian nexus in everything he does. As a DJ, artist and fashion designer, he's been projecting good vibes absolutely drenched in Balearic wholesomeness and so it's no surprise to see him linking up with that most chill of Danish labels, Music For Dreams. Lanuit's debut album is a gorgeous sunburst of the softest grooves accentuated by tender fingerpicked guitar playing. It's got just the right amount of thump in the low end to keep your head nodding even as the melodies intertwine with your mind and carry you far away. If you need a dose of Ibiza magic in your day, this album is a fast track ticket to the White Isle.

There are further signs of maturation on this long awaited debut album, which cheerfully shuffles between melodious, mid-tempo Balearic deep house ("Falling"), jazzy and folksy soundscapes (the brilliant title track), dub disco-influenced wonky synth-pop ("Drop The Gun"), Italo-disco revivalism ("Andromeda"), blissful ambient business (the delightful "Moments"), cosmic rock ("Hazy Eyes") and dewy-eyed vocal numbers ("October Letters"). In other words, he's finally delivered the album he's been capable of for some time.

Review: Pioneer of the desert-tech sound, Be Svendsen released his first full length album on Copenhagen's Music For Dreams label 4 years ago, earning a 3.4 on RYM and becoming Rough Trade's album of the month for January 2019. 'Between A Smile & A Tear' is a wide spanning album in terms of mood, instrumentation and aesthetic, a dualistic record that sees clashes between retro-futurism and just plain nostalgia. There are low tempo, emotional string country/folk moments that transition right into the expansive, galactic club sound we know him well for. Svendsen takes us on a journey that spans from innovative deep nu-disco cuts, space-age journey melodies, analogue ambient atmosphere to classic song writing, a smooth jazz cut on 'Day 3;, and a deep-tech organic collaboration with Henri Texier. Not to mention 4 bonus tracks from the original album including a single version of 'Hazy Eyes', an extended mix of 'Flint', an electronic reimagining of 'Day 3' as well as 'October Letters - Part 2'. There's a lot to love with this release.

Review: Late last year, previously unheard outfit Bongo Entp released a digital-only debut album via Kenneth Bager's Balearic-minded Music For Dreams EP. Here, they make their first appearance on wax via a set that showcases both tracks from that samba-soaked set, and a string of new remixes. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the heady, Azymuth-influenced samba-goes-jazz-funk shuffle of opener "Foto Felita Do Avaio" and synth heavy, dub-flecked warmth of "El Rey Do Pollo", to the near ambient, slo-mo dreaminess of "Lujon". Carrot Green turns that latter track into a mid tempo Balearic house shuffler, while Selvagem contributes a jaunty, dub-house interpretation of "Foto Filita Do Avaio" that's arguably the EP's finest moment.

Review: Following a surprise outing on Paul 'Mudd' Murphy's Leng label, Bonnie and Klein return to the comforting surrounds of Kenneth Bager's Music For Dreams imprint. While their work has always been dreamy and horizontally inclined, Too Many Colors features arguably their most downtempo material to date. Certainly, the woozy, floating chords and languid rhythms of "Magnolia" evoke memories of the golden age of chill-out, while "Flaming Lights" is more Balearic than sharing a jazz cigarette with Alfredo and Jose Padilla. The string-laden vocal number "Give It A Try" has a touch of the "Unfinished Sympathy" about it, while "Aquavivas" smartly fuses chiming melodies, exotic influences, dub rhythms and bustling Afro-Cuban percussion.

Review: The always sublime Music For Dreams is a perfect home for the balearic vibes, European electronica and Brazilian stylings of Copenema's debut album. Their name is a portmanteau of Copenhagen and Ipanema, which is a nod to the fact the quartet is made up of musicians from Denmark and Brazil. Lead single "Te Faz Bem" is a funky downtempo number with live flute, sax and guitars, while Ibiza favourite "Serei Seu" is a funky party track that echoes the great samba man Jorge Ben. Next to these cuts are sunset gems and cosmic jazz explorations as well as a a trio of vinyl only bonus cuts.

Review: Landers and Dalholt are becoming increasingly associated to the Music For Dreams imprint, out of Denmark, and we have to say that their particular strain of electronica is very much in line with our current tastes for all things Balearic and downtempo. The pair land on our charts with their debut LP, a magnificent ride across intergalactic soundscapes that seem to mesh and blend with each other seamlessly, the sounds entering a balance of their own. All that being said, the starry-eyed melodies and atmospherics that loom large over this piece of work do find their way into more energetic, more dance-centric moments that make this a truly complete album from these two relatively young producers. Much more to come from them, surely.

Review: DJ by night and producer by day, DJ Disse has always had the desire and hunger to be on the forefront when it comes to music. So it's no wonder he eventually ended up in "Music For Dreams". DJ Disse searches obscure flea markets for weird and strange vinyl - anything with a crazy beat can be used. "When I'm Bored, I Change Colour" is his new album. Based around a mix of electronic sounds, loops, samples from reggae beats, Balkan melodies and Arabic rhythms, it will for sure groove dancefloors, lounges and radio waves.

A label that encourages arrestingly immersive soundscapes and experimentation, Hello Ambient Wash is perfectly at home here; the fluttering baroque arpeggios on "Sine Song 5", the breath-taking choral synth textures on "Wow", the cosmic sunset twinkles on "LTL" and the soft pops and plucks on the pastoral sojourn "W30" are just some of the many charming highlights on this highly impressive comeback album. Review: Danish producer Emil Germ describes his music as 'snotty pop'. From the description, you'd expect the tracks contained within this expansive debut set to be stroppy, downbeat and sulky, but in fact it's something of a cheery, near Balearic delight. Smothered in the kind of tactile synths that heighten the senses, glistening guitar solos, tumbling melodies and eyes closed, boy/girl vocals, Adult Party is an impressive and very listenable debut. Highlights are pleasingly plentiful, from the title track's tear-jerking chords, violins and guitars, to the shimmering positivity of closer "Standing By Your Side".

Moana Pozzi - "L'Ultima Notte" (4:37)
Ivano Fossati & Oscar Prudente - "Gil (Voglia Di Terra)" (3:22)
Review: Kenneth Bager's Music For Dreams label has been dishing out chillout and Balearic music for over ten years now, and summer 2015 wasn't exactly going to be an exception. For his latest outing, Bager has chosen Leo Mas to bring together a three-tracker representing the Balearic islands' charismatic sounds; "Dolce Luna (Part 1)" by Italy's Gianni Bella represents the A side with a funky disco beat reminiscent of Pino Daniele, while the B side is taken over by Moana Pozzi's "L'Ultima Notte", a slow and soulful kind of number, and "Gil (Voglia Di Terra)" by Ivano Fossati and Oscar Prudente, a lovely guitar and flute mashup over a subtle beat and gentle basslines.

Review: Denmark's Music For Dreams continues to provide fine, off-kilter deep house by the truckload, and this new single from Drumpoet Community's Willie Graff and Darren Eboli is a lovely flash of sun-kissed dance music to bring the summer months in. "Love Flight" is an aptly dreamy wash of gentle house beats, while "First Light" expands further out into the ether. On the flip, "Second Sun" brings in a lush, warm bass that gets the groove on the funky side, leaving "Moon Tan" to bubble gently in a pool of tropical percussion jingles that could easily be left on repeat. Nice stuff from both label and artists!

Review: Gurevitsch could make a nylon string weep at 20 paces, such is his finger picking charm. Here we find him delivering two immaculate instrumentals where the background rhythm is simply a backbone for his spell-binding playmanship. "Mexican Margarita" is a frenzy of emotion and Latin passion while "Mapa De Soledad" is a much more subdued, emotional affair where Jacob's picking is complemented by perfectly accordion and blues harp leads. Remix-wise Tonovi (who previously remixed Jacob on MFD a few years back) adds a dubby, synth-shimmering twist while Len Leise ensures the Balearic factor of Jacob's skill is brought to a zenith with sandy toed charm.

Review: Jacob Gurevitsch is a Danish artist with a next level talent for playing the Spanish guitar. He has showcased that across three previous albums and countless live appearances and now lands on the always superb Music For Dreams with El Terreno, a new record named after the tranquil area of Palma, Mallorca in which he wrote the album. It has clearly had a big impact on him as there is a strong Balearic breeze blowing throughout. His quietly powerful compositions make a real emotion mark and vocal turns add richness to 'Santa Teresa' and Cuban jazz trumpet from Arturo Sandoval on 'For Your Love' sounds lovely indeed.

One of them was Yellow Spaceship which now gets a much deserved reissue on heavyweight vinyl having first landed back in January of 2022. It is a blissed out mix of Balearic and downtempo with the effervescing guitar lens front and centre wheel swooning strings and dusty, slow motion rhythms gently propel it along. Sunny, soulful and heartfelt, this is a real winter warmer.

And this is one such case as the project is centered around 99-year-old Iboja Wandall-Holm who sings about memories from her childhood growing up in Eastern Europe. The record plays out like a musical encounter where the songs are worked into magical forms by Danish musician Mikkel Hess and other members of his Hess Is More band with extra collaborative input from label head and producer Kenneth Bager.

Review: Music For Dreams' compilations are rarely less than essential, and this collection of recent Japanese music (2008-2018) is no different. Compiled by Ken Hidaka, Tokyo-based Max Essa and Test Pressing co-founder Dr Rob, the set starts with a beautiful and becalmed ambient piece by Yoshio Ojima (the sublime "Sealed") and ends with the lapping waves, vocal harmonies and twinkling pianos of Takashi Kokubo ("Quiet Inlet"). In between, you'll find the Steve Reich-ish marimba movements of Yoshiaki Ochi, the dubbed-out, piano-laden downtempo grooves of Little Tempo, the jazzy Balearic house of Schadaraparr, the sun-kissed dancefloor grooves of Little Big Bee and much more besides. As you'd expect, Hidaka, Essa and Dr Rob's selections are uniformly superb.

Review: Those who dig around Bandcamp for inspiration may have come across Islandman, a Turkish producer and multi-instrumentalist dedicated to jaunty Balearic fusions of summery styles and sounds. Rest In Space marks his first release for an established label - Kenneth Bager's fine Music For Dreams imprint - and offers the perfect introduction to his seductive sonic world. The ten instrumental cuts included are colourful and attractive, with the Istanbul native wrapping jazzy guitar solos, whistling synthesizer melodies and Persian melodies around a variety of gentle, sun-soaked grooves. There are occasional nods towards drowsy new age ambience, dub and Pat Metheny style jazz-funk fusion, but for the most part it's a sparkling and humid affair.

Review: Ahead of their European tour, Turkish electronic group Islandman share their EP 'Popsicle Obstacle', the new material on which tracks a heady musical pathway from archaic folk traditions and regional acoustics right through to the modern-day tonic-sonics of the electronic sequencer. Having made headway from the spiritualist dream of primitive past to the glossy utopia of a digital future, Islandman's core members are multi-instrumentalist & producer Tolga Boyuk, Eralp Guven (percussion) and Erdem Baser (guitars). The title is a misnomer, if not for the fact that the six tracks here are hardly obstacles at all; rather, they're hugely well-produced, flavoursome treats, chief among which has to be the incredible track 'Simple Man', which - take it from us - just gets cooler and cooler, timbrally and tastefully.

Review: Amazingly, it's some 13 years since Balearic-minded Danish DJ/producer Kenneth Bager founded the Music for Dreams imprint. The label's releases are relatively few and far between these days, but those 12" singles Bager does release are usually top notch. This second Sunset Sessions selection is a case in point. It's packed with sweet, effortlessly atmospheric nu-Balearic gems, from the drifting downtempo pop bliss of Turbotito's remix of Baby Alpaca's "Sea of Dreams" to the piano-laden rush of Emil Germ's delicious "Tease & Burn". Best of all, though, is Bager's own "Fat Bottom Penguins", a tasty chunk of dancefloor-centric dub built around delay-laden synths and a brilliantly rubbery electric bassline.

He's certainly kept the quality threshold high on sophomore album "Diagonal Musik", a breezy, beautiful and evocative set that's as Balearic as getting a back rub from Jose Padilla while watching the sun go down outside Cafe Del Mar. The album's greatest strength is its stripped-back simplicity, with Sandin offering up eight evocatively produced tracks built around gentle guitar motifs (mostly acoustic, with a little Pat Metheny style electric guitar), the occasional voice or beach-side field recording, a few well-placed effects (primarily delay and reverb) and little else. It may be simple and stripped-back in its construction, but "Diagonal Musik" is rarely less than intensely beautiful.

Review: One-time Witch Doctor "Prins" Emanuel Sundin has shown plenty of promise on his three EPs to date, so hopes are naturally high for this belated debut album. Across two slabs of wax, the producer expands on his loose, organic disco template, drawing on influences including krautrock, kosmiche, Scandolearic disco, dub reggae, calypso, new age, and skewed boogie. It's an entertaining and typically melodious affair, full of instrumental cuts that impressively tiptoe the fine line between Balearic goodness and full-on dancefloor disco. The second record heads further towards downtempo territory, whilst retaining the key musical ingredients of Sundin's ear-pleasing blueprint.

Review: Prins Emanuel is a Malmo-based artist with many strings to his bow, but here he returns to Music For Dreams for another exquisite excursion into the cosy folds of ill-defined kosmische-jazz-jam band music. It's a warm and many layered sound shaped out by instrumentation first and foremost, but driven by a motorik sensibility which carries each piece on its journey into mellow, mysterious terrain. It's not as explicitly worldly as most Fourth World music, but it shares that sense of relocation to unknown realms via tender means of travel. Immediate enough to draw you in from the first measure but subtle enough to keep you coming back to learn more, this is an undoubtedly brilliant record by a hidden treasure of Sweden's alternative music scene.

Review: The electrifying Rheinzand and is back with another superb full length that will get fans more than excited. Based in Ghent, Belgium it is a joint venture between multi-instrumentalist and producer Reinhard Vanbergen, Charlotte Caluwaerts of Tundra fame and Mo Disko who you will know from electronic pair The Glimmers. For the title track, Stephane Misseghers (from dEUS) joins them on drums and Bruno Coussee plays bass and it makes for a standout single "about drugs and good times, but also about hangovers, loneliness, and a twist of identity crisis." It is backed up by plenty of other innovative tunes.
