Review: After dazzling with disco promise with their eponymous 2008 debut album on DFA, Hercules and Love Affair have settled into a wide-eyed, revivalist house groove variously influenced by the productions of Victor Simonelli, Kevin Saunderson, David Morales and Ten City. This third album from Andrew Butler's ever-changing combo continues in a similar vein to 2010's Blue Songs, delivering a warm, enticing, entertaining and occasionally poppy blend of classic US garage, early Italian house, early '90s New York house and groovy crossover late '80s acid house. It's soulful, immaculately produced and thoroughly radio-friendly. It's also enjoyably quirky, with eccentric turns and tongue-in-cheek lyrics aplenty (see the hilariously sweary backing vocals on "My Offence").

Review: Oh, but of course, the difficult second album. Hercules & Love Affair make short shrift of the music hack's go-to line with this impressive follow up to 2008's eponymous debut. Shorn of original H&LA affair members Antony Hegarty and Tim Goldsworthy, it's a markedly different album for Andy Butler's project. Lead single "My House" perhaps is a sonic and literal hint that Butler is intent on exploring rawer house sounds, something that is most obviously evident on his new label Mr International. Hercules & Love Affair, however, continues to have an overwhelming disco element, with the "Answers Come In Dreams" sounding like a sonic love letter to Grace Jones. "Blue Songs" opens up the second side of the gatefold vinyl and provides a blissful downbeat moment replete with contemplative wood winds and chimes, while the synth heavy "Step Up", featuring Kele from Bloc Party, proves to be one of the album's high points.

Review: Anna Meredith's previous outing on Moshi Moshi, 2018's "Anno: Four Seasons", was a stunning re-imagination of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" suite that mixed her bubbly electronics with lush orchestration courtesy of the strings-only Scottish Ensemble. "Fibs", her third solo album, is an altogether different beast, It's made up of a mixture of electronic songs and instrumentals that put colourful, ear-catching synthesizer motifs, lo-fi machine drums and mid-80s electronics front and centre. Yet for all the up-beat moments, it's the John Carpenter/Giallo-influenced tracks - throbbing pieces that sound like they could have been made for turn-of-the-80s horror films - that hit home hardest.

Review: The Nix is a loose collection of uniquely talented musicians corralled together by Nick McCarthy (ex-Franz Ferdinand) and Seb Kellig around their Sausage Studio in East London. The recording sessions were informal - the studios were open 24 hours and musicians would simply drop in - and as a result the album has a proper party feel, rooted in the traditions of DIY pop and punky reggae. Notable guests include Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab fame and the ever game for a laugh KT Tunstall, but none of the numerous cameos outshines or obscures the overall communal vibe of the album as a whole. Sure to put a smile on your face and an earworm in your system, this is addictive homegrown soul music that leans to Two Tone's more light hearted moments, Althea Forrest and Donna Reid's classic 'Uptown Top Ranking' or even Fun Boy Three and Bananarama getting down to it together. Pure, not trying too hard, class.
