Eine Schone Welt (3:15)
Versuche Zu Versteh'n (3:26)
Review: First released way back in 1970, 'Eine Schone Welt' is that rarest of beasts: a simply superb, German language psychedelic soul jam that has long been in-demand within the record collecting community. It's undoubtedly the single greatest work from sadly departed German singer Susan Aviles - a genuine gem rich in wah-wah and fuzz-tone guitars, twinkling piano riffs, crunchy breakbeats and stirring orchestration, all topped off with a powerful lead vocal. Over on the flip you'll find another sought-after Aviles nugget: German B-boy favourite 'Versuche zu versten'n', whose Incredible Bongo Band style drums come seeped in grandiose orchestration and energetic lead vocals.

Review: The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band was founded in 1963 by brothers Cyril and Lionel Bishop. During the 60s and 70s they played the hotel and holiday resort circuit in Trinidad and Tobago and recorded a couple of albums for local labels with the usual staple of Calypso and lounge classics. "Look A Py Py", out on Melting Pot, features some great Meters classics.

Review: Funk fans will of course know that The Vicious Seeds fail from St. Petersburg and for a while now they have been turning out 45s that mix up raw cinematic grooves and deep funk instrumentals. For this newest 7" they sign up vibraphonist Pavel Chiznik who brings with him plenty of flair on top of the well versed rhythm section. These two cuts explore some airy, uplifting and summery jazz vibes a la Roy Ayers with dope beats and plenty of sample-friendly drumbreaks. Add in a load of funky basslines, some carefully psyched-out guitars and lush vibes and you have a vital little 45rpm.

Sirocco (3:17)
Nymphea (3:13)
Review: This year, Russian outfit the Diasonics have delivered a swathe of seven-inch singles, each of which acts as a showcase for their unique "Hussar funk" sound - an "outernational" style blend of deep funk grooves, psych-funk flourishes and melodic refrains that draw on their native Eastern European musical culture. They're at it again on their first Mocambo outing, which opens with the stunning strains of 'Sirocco', where Pierre Henry style synth motifs and decidedly Russian melodies rise above booming bass guitar, crunchy drum grooves and surprisingly creepy jazz guitars. Turn to side B for the slightly bolder and arguably even creepier 'Nymphea', another solid slab of quirky deep funk that should appeal to those who like eccentric 1970s library music and unusual musical mutations.

Funk
The Scarab's Quest (instrumental) (3:31)
The Hornet's Nest (instrumental) (2:18)
Review: For the uninitiated, Eleven76 is a breakdance-friendly space-funk project helmed by Mighty Mocambos member Paul Elliott. This must-check "45" is the fluid combo's third single for Mocambo Records, but the first for two years. Lead cut 'The Scarab's Quest' is seriously heavy, with Incredible Bongo Band style percussion, woozy Moog lines and 1960s spy-funk guitar licks dancing atop a low-slung bassline and weighty funk drums. Elliott's love of heavy bass guitar lines and glassy-eyed 1960s guitars is further explored on flipside 'The Hornet's Nest', an exotic library funk number that sounds like it could have featured on the soundtrack to a turn-of-the-'70s heist movie.

Review: First released back in 2015, the third album from Bjorn Wagner's break-fired revivalist funk combo, the Mighty Mocambos, has been given the reissue treatment on vibrant red vinyl. It's arguably the most notable of the eight-piece band's full-length excursions, primarily because it features an impressive cast-list of guest rappers, singers and musicians (Shawn Lee even plays autoharp on side two joint 'Cat Fight'). Musically, it's a boisterous and party-starting affair, with Wanger and co flitting between breakdancer-friendly instrumental funk, 1960s style vocal soul ('In The Dark', with Nicola Richards, is a highlight), and largely up-tempo, club-ready numbers featuring singing and rapping from the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Charlie Funk and Donald D.

Review: Having spent much of the last few years offering up tropical grooves under their alternative Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band alias, the Mighty Mocambos have finally got around to recording another funk-focused album. Of course, this is not straight-up revivalist funk or soul in the strict sense, but rather a collection of inventive cuts rooted in bustling breakbeats, fuzzy basslines, razor-sharp guitar riffs and hazy horns. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the sweet soul shuffle of Lee Fields collaboration "Where Do We Go From Here" and the rasping dancefloor soul-funk goodness of Gizelle Smith hook-up "Take On The World", to the 1950s sci-fi soundtrack cheeriness of "Return To Space" (featuring legendary composer Peter Thomas), and the synth-fired intergalactic dancefloor goodness of "Golden Shadow".

Something's Missing (2:16)
St Pauli Second Line (2:33)
Keep It Movin' (3:11)
Review: If heavy and fuzzy funk is your bag, we'd heartily recommend checking out this straight-to-tape live session from Bjorn Wagner's long-serving Mighty Mocambos outfit. It was recorded at an in-store live performance at German store Groove City live December and comes complete with atmospheric crowd noise and a raw, heavyweight sound that only enhances the band's live credentials. Vocalist Nicola Richards makes her soulful presence felt on loose-limbed, breakbeat-driven deep funk opener "Something's Missing", before returning to lead the party on the wonderfully fiery and funky flipside "Keep It Movin". Sandwiched in between you'll find the slower, crunchier and more bass-heavy instrumental jam "St Pauli Second Line".

Review: The Mighty Mocambos follow on from their well recovered and futurist 2066 album from last summer with another vital new 7". This collection of musicians also records on Brooklyn's Big Crown Records in a more tropical guise known as Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band but are back in their original form for this one. 'The Take Off (part 1 - instrumental)' is a funky jumble of drums, organic percussion and ass-shaking rhythms. On the flips part two featuring a vocal from JSwiss that is even more ready to blow up your spot.

Review: Over the last few years, German deep funk heroes the Mighty Mocambos have taken to capturing their live performances - not just at concerts, but also record shop 'in-store' sessions and soundchecks - via a mobile recording studios. Scenarios, their self-proclaimed 'live album with a twist', features some of their favourite recordings. What makes it extra-special - aside from the quality of the music, of course - is that it features acoustic and semi-acoustic fare (composed for and performed in a lockdown live stream) as well as the heavyweight, floor-friendly jams that we know and love them for. Of course, there's loads of highlights in the latter category, including killer covers of 'Axel F' and 'Let The Music Play' and the squally funk-rock treat that is 'Munich Pyscholympics'.

Pigalle Theme (2:41)
Review: You better believe it: Hamburg's Mocambo imprint has been going string since 1996, and the label has always been a reliable source of steely, slap-bass funk, boogie-leaning disco, and soul-induced pop. It's a new artist this time, France's Pigalle Connection, who drops "Paris Breakdown", a solid, 70's-driven instrumental missile with awesome horns, followed swiftly by the naughtier and sexier guitar fuzz of "Milano Drive". Last and certainly not least is the sublime rhythmic incantation that is "Pigalle Theme", a groovy, messy little jam that woke us the hell up this morn'. Sick business.
