Perceptual EP (heavyweight vinyl double 12")
Cat: MEANDER 21. Rel: 12 Apr 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Aural (12:24)
  2. Perceptual (11:25)
  3. Celestial (10:07)
  4. Mutual (8:59)
Review: Amphia co-founder Cristi Cons has been rather quiet of late, having previously impressed with a swathe of solo and collaborative EPs in early 2016. Here, the Romanian producer returns to action for the first time in 2017 via a rock solid collection of cuts, which come stretched across two weighty slabs of wax. As you might expect, all four tracks sit neatly into the now familiar Romanian tech-house style, which combines the crackling textures and production intricacy of minimal techno with the head-nodding shuffle of tech-house drum programming. Our highlight is probably super-odd closer "Mutual", which boasts some serious sub-bass and plenty of odd electronic noises, though the slightly more symphonic "Perceptual" is not far behind.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Within Space (10:06)
  2. Space Between (6:54)
  3. Space Between (dub) (7:26)
Review: Bucharest's Cristi Cons and Germany's DeWalta have previously served up killer EPs on the latter's Meander imprint (based out of Berlin) but this is their first collaboration and it works surprisingly well. Their unique sounds individually combine to rather interesting effect. The dubby and haunting "Within Space" cruises along gracefully with syncopated percussion, rolling bass and ethereal atmosphere. Second track on the flip entitled "Space Between" is more uptempo with its rolling bass, immersive pads and swing fuelled rhythm supporting a lovely spoken word narrative. There is also a dub version for those of you less keen on the monologue.

Family Jubilee II: Part 2 Of 3 (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: MEANDER 0202. Rel: 26 Jul 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Cristi Cons - "Meandering" (7:51)
  2. Franky Greiner - "Klaus Grony" (11:57)
Review: Dewalta's Meander imprint has been particularly impressive in recent times, with hot releases from the best of the best in minimal techno. Celebrating a decade in the business, the label presents the second edition of Family Jubilee which features Romanian rising star (and recent collaborator) Cristi Cons. Where he and Dewalta served up one of last year's standout releases with their Space Between EP, Cons flies solo here and serves up some of his typically reductionist mini-funk on "Meandering" a truly hypnotic groove if we've ever heard one. On the flip is Berlin based newcomer Franky Greiner who has appeared previously on Perlon, Cadenza and Cityfox. His contribution entitled "Klaus Grony" is a long and tripped out journey that's perfect for bending minds at the Sunday afterhours.

Eftive (12")
Cat: MEANDER 001. Rel: 21 Jul 07
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Eftive
  2. Tesla
Review: DeWalta again provides us with two stunning tracks, this time on his own label Meander Music. While "Eftive" is reduced to the basic elements of a drum combo with atmospheric soundscapes, "Tesla" concentrates much more on moogish sound experiments. The bassline is tenderly drifting on both tracks and takes his time to raise up. Furthermore the accompanying effects and synth experiments have a strong but minimal feel. Both tracks come with a unique sound design and take you on a journey into the late morning hours.

Lyra (180 gram vinyl 2xLP)
Cat: MEANDER 025. Rel: 13 Feb 19
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Atralux (11:49)
  2. Phylae (7:35)
  3. Lyra (6:59)
  4. Vega (13:39)
  5. Myths (7:26)
  6. Cabinet Of Mirrors (8:02)
Review: David Koch, better known as Dewalta has gradually grown his Berlin-based Meander label into one of the most respected names in minimal techno, and production wise he has really hit his stride in recent years. Testament to this is his new double opus Lyra, with the second part being a collection of ambient productions that will launch the new Horizons sublabel. In Greek mythology, Lyra represents the Lyre of Orpheus, given to Apollo, which is said to be the first music instrument ever made. The dusty and understated techno reductions that he similarly explores with studio pal Mike Shannon are evident on the album, with highlights such as "Atralux" and "Myths". Things get fully cavernous and glacial on chilling dub techno journeys such as the title track, and broadening the album's groove diversity are deep, dreamy and ethereal numbers (well suited to the afterhours) such as the evocative closer "Cabinet Of Mirrors". One of 2019's most highly anticipated albums and worth the wait.

Lyra Pi (180 gram vinyl 12" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: MEANDER 026PI. Rel: 13 Feb 19
Experimental/Electronic
  1. North Star (14:08)
  2. Fugacity (7:56)
  3. Lyra (8:16)
  4. Pulses (9:34)
  5. Photons (5:52)
Review: Meander boss David Koch AKA DeWalta has been a busy boy of late. Hot on the heels of his well received "Lyra" album comes "Lyra Pi", an expansive EP that's apparently meant to be a "partner piece" (or, as some in the Juno office called it, "an encore to the album"). Intriguingly, it sees him dispense with beats altogether; instead, he offers up a quintet of spacey, otherworldly ambient and experimental electronic cuts of the highest order. Highlights include the unsettling, wayward synthesizer arpeggio lines of "Fugacity", the dub techno style deep space hypnotism of "Lyra Pi", the droning darkness and buzzing, end-of-days electronics of "Pulses", and the fluid bliss of mind-altering closing cut "Photons".

The Scorched Earth Interpretations (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: MEANDER 0165. Rel: 09 Feb 16
Drum And Bass
  1. Scorched Earth (dBridge interpretation) (7:52)
  2. Scorched Earth (Barac interpretation) (12:10)
Review: Wagon Repair co-founder Konrad Black doesn't release anywhere near as much music as we'd hope. But when he does, it's always worth paying attention. The very same can be said for the remixes he commissions, too. Case in point: these interpretations. First up Exit bossman dBridge ups the tempo and really plays with the cosmic textures of Konrad's original space theme where beautiful mid 90s pads and loosely swinging two-step provide a strong sense of timelessness. Second up: Romanian minimalist Barac who lays down an undulating acid-tinged groove that ploughs relentlessly, lavishly and uncompromisingly for over 12 minutes. Scorching.

Family Jubilee II: Part 3 Of 3 (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: MEANDER 0203. Rel: 26 Jul 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Konrad Black - "Snake Charmers" (7:22)
  2. Kamran Sadeghi - "Amber Alert" (6:49)
  3. De Walta - "Pin Tweaks" (11:53)
Review: Dewalta's Meander imprint has been particularly impressive in recent times, with hot releases from the creme de la creme in minimal techno. Celebrating a decade in the business, the label presents the third edition of Family Jubilee which features a reinvigorated Konrad Black. The Canadian is creating some his best music in years, as heard on the PAN-ish experimental bass of "Snake Charmers" where he's still pursuing a similar style to that of his Scorched Earth EP which appeared on the label back in 2015. New York City tech house hero (and one third of Soundwalk Collective) Kamran Sadeghi presents the slinky groove of "Amber Alert" that is full of the same hypnotic polyrhythms as heard on his Astral Body EP for label last year. De Walta himself gives us the eerie minimal futurism of "Pin Tweaks" which is a perfect closer for this fine EP.

  1. Dark Moon (6:44)
  2. The Ninth Cloud (7:30)
  3. Solaris (7:29)
  4. Scarlet Heaven (7:21)
Review: Dewalta has been doing a fine job of curating his respected Meander imprint of late, with some stunning releases by the brightest stars in the minimal techno scene at present. Following up some quality EPs by newcomers like Sublee and Alci, we've got a stunning release by Italian virtuoso Christopher Ledger - who has carved his own distinct sonic path over the last few years with releases on Brouqade, Animae and Ada Kaleh. "Dark Moon EP" consolidates many of his sonic aesthetics on this 4-tracker: the moody and intoxicating title track with its UKG influence, to the straight up hypnotic tech house of "The Ninth Cloud" (which will mix in perfectly with most of the label's back catalogue), closing with the emotive breakbeat IDM of "Scarlet Heaven" which calls to mind a similar vibe as explored on his recent 'MPC Sketches' EP.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Ion Ludwig - "Mitad Del Mundo" (8:07)
  2. Vlad Caia - "Slowsetup" (9:08)
Review: Five years on from the release of the rather fine Family Jubilee compilation, Meander has decided to put out a follow-up. This time around, the Berlin-based label has decided to stretch the material over three EPs, rather than one weighty triple-pack. This first 12" begins with a fine chunk of woozy, tech house/deep house fusion from Ion Ludwig, whose "Mitad Del Mundo" achieves a near perfect balance between rhythmic hypnotism, bassline-driven funkiness and the ghostly fluidity of late night ambient. Bucharest-based Vlad Caia handles the flipside, in the process delivering a typically trippy chunk of rolling Romanian tech-house.

  4. The Mole - "Untitled Title X" (5:46)
Review: Dewalta's Meander imprint never fails to impress, with its careful curation of the finest minimal house and techno at present. Following up terrific releases by Swiss rising star Alci and Romania's Cristi Cons, the Berlin based imprint calls in veteran Canadian producer Colin de la Plante aka The Mole - for his take on subtle and understated groove music for the afterhours. While the deep and dubby bounce of "Set You Free" is decent enough in its original form, it's really all about Amorf's awe-inspiring rework where the aforementioned Cons teams up with right hand man Vlad Caia and Mischa Blanos for some drifting and hypnotic sonic sorcery. On the flip, there's a collaboration with de la Plante's Canadian homeboy Hreno (as Valerie Temple Boyd) on the tripped-out mini-funk of "Comb Over".

Review: As you'd expect given his impressive track record, there's much to enjoy on Stefan "Sublee" Nicu's first outing on Berlin label Meander. We're particularly enjoying A-side "Electica", a driving and hypnotic affair built around relentless percussion, a nagging and spacey synth hook and some seriously dreamy, otherworldly chords. Over on side B, opener "Continuum" sees the Romanian deliver a more typically atmospheric, glitchy and rolling tech-house shuffler, while EP closer "Irealis" subtly joins the dots between his techno-leaning house productions, the futurism of Detroit and the heartwarming, loved-up bliss of classic deep house. In other words, it's tech-house in the truest sense of the term.
