Vol 11 & 12 (LP + insert)
Cat: OLE 1488LP. Rel: 25 Oct 19
Indie
  1. Move Together (1:40)
  2. Noses In Roses, Forever (3:23)
  3. Far East For The Trees (10:27)
  4. If You Run (3:59)
  5. Crucifire (1:46)
  6. Chic Tweetz (3:48)
  7. Something You Can't See (3:27)
  8. Easier Said Than Done (3:08)
Review: If you're unfamiliar with what the Desert Sessions are, or were, then a little back story probably won't go amiss. It's 1997 and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) debunks to the remote desert enclave of Joshua Tree, California. He takes a handful of friends with him, and this being music that handful of friends are all suitably talented and - in many cases - pretty renowned. The results have been enshrined in the pantheons of music folklore, recorded and gradually released in sequential volumes. Here we have "Vol. 11 & 12" then, which features a host of notable characters. From Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears to ZZ Top man Billy Gibbons and Warpaint's Stella Mozgawa. Spanning the gamut from the cartoonish nod to Tom Tom Club or B52s ("Chic Tweetz") to the head-nodding, scuzzy rock 'n' roll goodness of "Noses In Roses, Forever", it's exploratory, beguiling and very much worthy of your time.

Review: When you use words like "prickly", "abrasive" and "uncompromising" it's rarely flattering. Consider Kim Gordon's exceptional powerhouse long form one of the exceptions. As far removed from music for the masses as you could hope for, it takes a particular talent to deliver work like "No Record Home". Labels such as punk certainly apply, but it's less about mouths gushing spittle amid the deafening screams of guitars and raucous vocals, and more about overall attitude. No change there for this co-founder of the mighty Sonic Youth then. Loud and intelligent, forthright and yet heartfelt and tender in its own unforgiving way, it's as far removed from wall of sound discordance as it is anything you could describe as remotely over-explored. Marrying the bloody-lipped electro of Peaches and body blow lows of EBM with gritty rock 'n' roll chords, those looking for originality that oozes repeatability should consider their hunt over, for now at least.

Review: It's always exciting when some of your favourite artists announce a new musical project. Clearly, then, we were pretty excited about Muzz. Featuring Interpol's Paul Banks, Josh '1/3 of Bonny Light Horseman' Kaufman and Matt Barrick (see: The Walkmen, Fleet Foxes touring band), if the total is equal to the sum of those parts then we should be in for a treat. Not a let down in earshot, all 12 tracks are immediately enthralling. 'Evergreen' and its sombre, reflective guitar strokes combined with subtle electronic effects. The massive, scuzzy rock 'n' roll of 'Knuckleduster'. The heart-wrenching crooning of 'All Is Dead To Me'. A work of many layers, it's a soulful and immersive thing packed with an incredible amount of feeling, and made possible by an incredible level of talent.
