Minimal/Tech House
  1. The Dawn (10:23)
  2. The Dawn (Dixon remix) (6:36)
Review: Kill The DJ regular Chloe Thevenin has made some superb records over the years, but few have been quite as magical as "The Dawn". Clocking in at just-under 11 minutes, the track builds slowly, with melancholic synthesizer loops, poignant spoken word samples and chiming melody lines wrapping themselves around shuffling drum machine beats and a thrillingly heavy bassline. Wisely, Thevenin uses the opportunity to build towards a heartbreaking climax via sweeping strings and brilliantly layered melodies. It's genuinely brilliant, all told. Heavy hitter Dixon opts to flip the script on the B-side, delivering a dark, foreboding and paranoid dancefloor version that makes great use of Thevenin's synth-strings and creepy spoken word samples.

Review: Since the release of her last album in 2010, Kill The DJ co-founder Chloe Thevenin seems to have been taking things relatively easy. While she continues to be a popular presence behind the decks on the European club scene, her recorded output has been limited. Endless Revisions, her third album, is an impressive return to the spotlight, though. A notably mature and thoughtful affair, it sees the veteran Frenchwoman saunter between dark, synthesizer-heavy soundscapes, clandestine cold-wave workouts, atmospheric wooziness, mind-altering ambient interludes and pitch-black dancefloor shufflers. It naturally holds together brilliantly as an album thanks to her consistently moody sonic approach, though it will take you a few listens to really get to grips with everything that's going on. Needless to say, it's time well spent.

Review: Musical (and real life) couple Local Suicide has been in fine form of late, delivering a series of solid collaborations with the likes of Curses, Franz Matthews and Theus Mago. Here they go solo once more via a first outing on Lumiere Noire. Title track "Leopard Gum" is dark, woozy and feverish, with the pair wrapping curiously off-kilter vocals, intoxicating electronics and ghostly chords around a slow, sparse, bass-heavy groove. It's given a throbbing, darkwave inspired makeover by regular studio buddies Smagghe & Cross, before Local Suicide serves up the clandestine and atmospheric new wave chug of "Already There". In typical fashion, synthesizer fetishist Phillip Lauer offers up an Italo-disco influenced interpretation that turns the track into a cheery chunk of Balearic disco goodness.

Review: Mexican producer Inigo Vontier releases his fifth EP, including a massive remix from Tolouse Low Trax of Salon Des Amateurs. Vontier claims that since he was young, he's been immersed in the culture of the Mexican Aztecs and Mayas. Seen from Europe, his assertion can seem puzzling; but to him this hybridisation makes sense, expressing the dreams of people steeped in such mystique. Moreover, he states proudly that he's here to help the Mexican dance music scene to reach its deserved credibility, along with homegrown heroes such as Rebolledo (Pachanga Boys/Hippie Dance). The slow burning and atmospheric "Aluxes" comes by way of Italo via Kompakt style techno. "Patito" gets it on much darker and energetically: perfect to create dancefloor drama and will appeal to fans of the Correspondant sound. Equally brooding is "Macaco" but the aforementioned remix by Dusseldorf hero Detlef Weinrich takes it down a notch and into a nice tool styled remix for cruise control on the dancefloor.
